Reading Comprehension. (30%) (25 minutes)Passage one Questions 21to 25 are based on the following passage.Brazil has become one of the developing countries which make great successes at reducing population growth-but more by accident than design. While countries such as India have made efforts to reduce birth rates (出生率), Brazil has had better result without really trying, says George Mar-tine at HarvardBrazil's population growth rate has dropped from 2.99% a year between 1951 and 1960 to 1.93% a year between 1981 and 1990, and Brazilian women now have only 2.7 children on average. Martine says this figure may have fallen still further since 1990,and achievement that makes it the envy of many other Third World countries.Martine thinks that soap operas (肥皂剧) and installment plans introduced in the 1970s played an important, although indirect, role in lowering the birth rate. Brazil is one of the world's biggest producers of soap operas. Globo, Brazil's most popular television network, shows three hours ofsoaps six nights a week, while three others show at least one hour a night. Most soaps are based on wealthy characters living the high life in big cities."Although they have never really tried to work in a message towards the problems of repro-duction, they describe middle and upper class values — not many children, different attitudes to-wards sex, women working, ” says Martine, "They sent this image to all parts of Brazil and made people know other patterns and other values, which were put into a very attractive package."Meanwhile, the installment plans tried to encourage the poor to become consumers. "This led to a great change in consumption patterns and consumption was incompatible with unlimited reproduction," says Martine.21. According to the passage, Brazil has cut back its population growth _____.A) by educating its citizens B) by developing TV programsC) by careful family planning D) by chance22. According to the passage, many Third World countries ____.A) haven't given much attention to birth controlB) would soon join Brazil in controlling their birth ratesC) haven't yet found an effective measure to control their populationD) haven't produced enough TV plays23. What does the word "envy" in Line 4, Para. 2 mean?A) Love. B) Hate. C) Admiration. D) Hope.24. Soap operas have helped in lowering Brazil's birth rate because _____.A) they have gradually changed people's way of lifeB) they keep people sitting long hours watching TVC) people are interested in soap operasD) they popularize birth control measures25. What is Marline's conclusion about Brazil's population growth?A) The increase in birth rate will promote (促进) consumptionB) The desire for consumption helps to reduce birth rate.C) A country's production is limited by its population.D) Consumption patterns have nothing to do with population. Passage two Questions 26 to 30are based on the following passage.Human wants seem endless. When a starving man gets a meal, he begins to think about an overcoat; when a manager gets a new sports car, dreams of country clubs and pleasure boats dance into his view. The many wants of mankind might be regarded as making up several levels. When there is money enough to satisfy one level of wants, another level appears. The first and most basic level of wants is food. Once this want is satisfied, a second level of wants appears: clothing and housing. By the end of World War II these wants were satisfied for a great majority of Americans. Then a third level appeared. It included such items as cars and new houses.By 1957 or 1958 this third level of wants was fairly well satisfied. Then, in the late 1950s a fourth level of wants appeared: the "life-enriching" level. While the other levels mean physical satisfaction —the feeding, comfort, safety, and transportation of the human body —this level means mental needs for recognition, achievement and happiness. It includes a variety of goods and services, many of which could be called "luxury (奢侈)" items. Among them are vacation trips, the best medical care, and entertainment. Also included here are fancy foods and the latest styles in clothing. On the fourth level, a greater percentage of consumers spending goes to services, while on the first three levels more is spent on goods- Will consumers raise their sights to a fifth level of wants as their income increases, or will they continue to demand luxuries and personal services on the fourth level?A fifth level probably would be wants that can be achieved best by community (社区) action. Consumers may be spending more on taxes to pay for government action against disease, pollution and crime- After filling our stomachs, our garages, and our minds, we now may seek to ensure the health and safety to enjoy more fully the good things on the first four levels.26. According to the passage, man will begin to think about such needs as housing and clothing only when _____.A) he has saved up enough moneyB) he has grown dissatisfied with his simple shelterC) he has satisfied his hunger D) he has learned to build houses27. It can be inferred from the passage that by the end of World War H most Americans ____A) were very rich B) were very poorC) had the good things on the first three levels D) didn't own cars28. Which of the following is NOT related to physical satisfaction?A) Seeing interesting films. B) A comfortable house.C) Delicious food. D) A family car.29. What is the main want of man on the fourth level?A) The more goods, the better. B) The more mental satisfaction, the better.C) The more luxury items, the better. D) The more earning, the better.30. The author thinks that a fifth level _____.A) would be a little better than the fourth levelB) may be a lot more desirable than the first fourC) can be the last and most satisfying levelD) will come true provided the government takes actionsPassage three Questions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage. What do you do with your empty cans and bottles? There are two choices, throwing them away or recycling. Throwing away a metal beverage (饮料) container wastes as much energy as filling a can with gasoline and pouring half out. Besides wasting energy, throwing away bottles and cans causes pollution, increases the volume of solid wastes, and uses up natural resources. To control these problems, only nine slates have adopted bottle laws. The United Stales government should require every state to have a bottle law or constitute (制定) a national bottle law.To understand how a bottle law can help, you must know how it works. When consumers buy canned or bottled beverages at the store, they pay deposits. This deposit can range from twenty to fifty cents per bottle or can. In order to get this deposit back- the bottles and cans must be returned to supermarkets after they are emptied. The supermarkets then return the bottles and cans to their manufacturers for either reuse or recycling.Bottle laws are currently effective in Oregon, Vermont, Maine, Michigan, Iowa, Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts, and New York. These taws work largely because the general public supports them, A recent poll (民意测验) of Americans revealed that 73 percent support bottle laws. This support undoubtedly results from people's concern about pollution and our planet's limited resources.31. What is the bad thing if one throws away metal cans after drinking?A) Causing personal inconvenience. C) Pouring half of the gasoline out.B) Going against the national law. D) Wasting energy.32. Throwing away metal containers people will affect the environment by _____.A) causing pollution C) using natural resourcesB) recycling them D) preserving natural resources33. What does the author suggest in order to solve the problems of cans and bottles?A) Having the manufacturers recycle the containers.B) Preventing people from pouring out beverage.C) Making a national bottle law. D) Putting the bottle laws into effect.34. Who would pay the deposits for the beverage containers?A) The manufacturer. C) The supermarket.B) The consumer. D) The government.35. According to the author, a bottle law can work if_____.A) the nine states support it B) the consumers pay depositsC) the manufacturers recycle the empty containersD) the consumers, supermarkets and manufacturers make joint effortsIII.
