2014高考英语阅读理解抓分训练题(38)及答案阅读理解If you travel to a new exhibit at the San Francisco Conservatory of Flowers, you will have chances to see some meat-eating plants. Take bladderworts, a kind of such plant, for example. They appear so small and grow in a quiet pond. But these are the fastest-known killers of the plant kingdom, able to capture a small insect in 1/50 of a second using a trap door!Once the trap door closes on the victim, the enzymes(酶) similar to those in the human stomach slowly digest the insect. When dinner is over, the plant opens the trap door and is ready to trap again.Meat-eating plants grow mostly in wet areas with soil that doesn’ t offer much food value. In such conditions, these amazing plants have developed insect traps to get their nutritional needs over thousands of years. North America has more such plants than any other continent.Generally speaking, the traps may have attractive appearance to fool the eye, like pitcher plants, which get their name because they look like beautiful pitchers (a container like a bottle) full of nectar(花蜜).The Asian pitcher plant, for example, has bright colors and an attractive half-closed lid. Curious insects are tempted to come close and take a sip, and then slide down the slippery (光滑的)slope to their deaths.Hair-like growths along the pitcher walls ensure that nothing cab escape, and the digestive enzymes can get to work. A tiny insect can be digested in a few hours, but a fly takes a couple of days. Some of these pitchers are large enough to hold two gallons. Meat eating plants only eat people in science fiction movies, but sometimes a bird or other small animals will discover that a pitcher plant isn’ t a good place to get a drink.【文章大意概括】本文是一篇说明文,介绍了一些特别的植物——靠捕食动物获得生长所需养分的“食肉植物”。

雅思英语作文 家庭不像过去那样亲密 families

雅思英语作文 家庭不像过去那样亲密 families

It is generally accepted that families are not as close as they used to be. Give reasons why this change has happened and suggest how families could be brought closer together?Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience. You should write at least 250 words.Model Answer 1:Families, which form the base for socialisation, are not as bonded as they had been in earlier days. It is undeniable that the bonding between the members of the family is weakening gradually during the course of time. The primary reason is time spent together with the family has shrunk. In the rat race to achieve materialistic prosperity, everyone in the family started working in different places, so it is quite evident that they hardly have quality time with each other. For instance, if both parents in a family are the breadwinners then it is obvious that their words would be left aloof most of the time. Thus the space left for love and affection to blossom in such a nuclear family has become less frequent.Another connected reason is the addiction to electronic gadgets .This contemporary worlddrives people to become technophilic. Despite having leisure time, these days it appears that it is not well spent with the loved ones because of laptops and smartphones. This is because these gadgets have access to the internet which in turn opens ways for social networking sites like Facebook and YouTube. Thus there is a larger probability that the citizens might get hooked and engrossed .Since these consume more time, the time spent with family has lessened. With regard to the suggestions to bind the families together, it is recommended that if everyone decides to be with their family everyweekend then definitely it would compensate the time they worked round the clock throughout the week. Therefore, in my opinion, this weekend bonds might even make individuals emotionally more attached to other members of the family and could strengthen their relationship. To conclude, most of the populaces are deprived of time for spending with their families either because of aspiration for materialism or addiction to gadgets .This has made a dramatic change that the family members are not as closer to each other like years ago, so it issuggested to spend weekends with family to make up their relationship.。

Identify the paragraph from which the information is derived. You may choose a paragraph more than once. Each paragraph is marked with a letter.Proactive Strategies to Build a Social LifeA) A lot of people believe that developing a social life is something that should just happen and develop naturally, without you needing to do anything. I disagree. I think that while this can happen for some folks, in certain stages of their life, it’s not always the case, which is why many of us today lack a fulfilling social life. If you’re in college where you get to hang around lots of other people and you’re naturally a social person, your social circle will develop on its own. But if you’re an accountant working in cubicle all day and you’re kind of shy and don’t go out much, your social life may be seriously deficient.B) In my view, building a social life requires the same active and strategic approach that making money or building a career requires. The approach is based on setting goals and acting on them. Coming from this angle, I want to show you some proactive (积极主动的) strategies to build a social life.C) A fulfilling social life looks differently for different people. Some of us need lots of friends and a large social circle. Some of us are more fond of having just a few friends, but who are very close to us. And some prefer a mix of the two. What is your preference? Do you know? Take some time to think about this and visualize what your ideal social circle would look like. D) Another aspect to think about is what kind of people you want in your social circle. Do you prefer people who are artistic, or people who are tech-oriented? People who are outdoorsy or prefer to be indoors? Usually, you will get along best with individuals who are similar to you. So I advise you to consider your dominant traits and consciously decide which of these traits are important for you to find in others. If you know what kind of people you want in your life, you’re much more likely to find them.E) Once you know how many and what kind of friends you’re looking for, it’stime to take action in order to meet them. This m ay seem obvious, but it’s something many of us ignore: If you just wait for others to come to you, you’ll never build a social circle. You must have the initiative and go to them.F) My recommendation here is to think about activities where you are likely to meet people you’d enjoy interacting with, and get involved in a few of them. For instance, you may take a class on a topic you’re interested in. You may volunteer for a charity organization or join some sort of club. Even if you don’t have any friends whatsoever at this point, you can apply this strategy. You can get involved in such activities all by yourself, and you’ll meet others there.G) In using this strategy, the Internet is your friend. You can discover all sorts of classes, social events, clubs and organizations near you online. But keep in mind that this is only the first step. Then you need to actually get out of the house, go there and participate.H) So you attend a training program on, let’s say, urban photography. There are lots of other people there. What do you do? In general, the passive approach tends to prevail. Many of us just sit around doing nothing and expect others to come talk to us, ask us questions, and be chatty. And this may happen, or it may not. One thing I’m certain of,though, is that it’s not the best approach. You want to be friendly first. Be the one to break the ice.I) Walk up to other people and introduce yourself to them. Then start chatting with them. For example, ask them how they found out about the event, how long they’ve been interested in urban photography, change from there into other topics, and if they seem to enjoy talking to you (which they almost always will), keep the conversation going. Doing this may not be easy at first, especially if you’re not used to being this outgoing, but it’s something you get used to with practice. The trick is not to let hesitancy prevent you from being social. And I can tell from experience that if you are social and friendly with new people first, they’ll love you for it.J) If you’re building a new social life from scratch, the beginning is always the hardest part. However, once you’ve met a few people, it gets a lot easier because you can then make use of them to meet even more people. You can then meet some of their friends and acquaintances, and expand your social circle further.K) Again, a proactive approach works miracles. Let your friends know that you’re interested in meeting new people and you’d love to be introduced to other people they know. If they indeed ar e your friends, they’ll love to help you out. They may invite you to come with them to parties they go to, they may call other people to join you when you go out, and they’ll introduce you to new people. But you have to let them know their help is desired.L) The best part is that the bigger your social circle becomes, the easier it is to employ this strategy. Your social life will expand faster and faster, and you’ll find it progressively easier to find people you match well with.M) Your social life is completely in your hands. You can have a social life as rich, connected and diverse as you want. All you need is to do a bit of smart planning in this area, and take massive action. There is certainly no shortage of possibilities to meet people and make fr iends. It’s up to you to capitalize on them. Good luck!1)You will meet some people you would like to interact with when you take part in some activities. F2)People’s ideas of a satisfying social life vary from person to person. C3)You can enlarge your social circle by taking advantage of your current friends. J4)Nowadays many people lack a happy and satisfying social life because their social life doesn’t always develop naturally as they think. A5)You have complete control over your social life and you can have a fulfilling one by making plans and taking actions. M6)The common thing between building a social life and building a career is that they both require using some methods and strategies actively. B7)It’s not easy to be outgoing and sociable among the people you don’t know, but you’ll be used to it with practice. I8)It will be helpful in building your ideal social circle if you know your major characteristics and personality. D9)Many people often ignore that they should go to find friends actively and not simply wait for others to come to them. E10)Suppose you participate in a training program, you are advised to be friendly and break the silence first. At a time when families are spread far and wide and marriages often end in divorce, friendships of intimacy and trust are becoming more and more important. Also, a TV show called Real Women is about the lives and relationships of five former school friends. In this show, family, husbands, and work are all less important than friendships. The Spanish brought the potato back to Europe with them. But people in Europe did not like this strange vegetable.

Some people think that young people should spend free time with families instead of outside entertainment, others disagree. Discuss both views and give your opinion. How to manage leisure time comes to an important problem to be solved nowadays since it is a dilemma to choose between spending time with family members and having fun outsides. In fact, there are various reasons for both sides and they can hold water. For most people, the family comes first under any circumstances. When they are young, they need to show their gratefulness and appreciation towards parents who raise them up, and then, after growing up, they shoulder the responsibility to support and educate children in the family. In this way, everyone should accompany families, who are most precious in the world, as much time as possible. On the other hand, it will stress people out if there is no time to enjoy themselves outside. Life is far more than family, and they need to hang out with friends, work with colleagues or date with lovers. Also, people must get tired to face the same person 24 hours per day for 7 days. From my point of view, spending more time with family is truly needed. Actually, people put the most of time outside and less and less time at home with their beloved since they should work 40 hours per week and meet up with business partners, andare willing to kit at shopping malls for a movie with buddies. There are too few hours for families. In addition, people still can get entertainment too when they spend time with family members. No rules to regulate what a family gathering should like and every family member can host one for the theme they love. Thus, tremendous happiness could be generated in family time.雅思写作大作文范文:父母应该多陪子女范文:In China, both of the parents have their jobs. With the development of economy, people tend to pursue high quality living conditions. Most of the parents try their best to offer their children comfortable circumstances, but they seldom have time to stay with their children. In my point of view, no matter how busy they are, they should make the best use of their time to stay with their children.)First, the love between children and adults will be improved by spending more time on their children. Children could feel parents' affection through the genial conversation and sharing their pleasure with them. Every time when parents take them to amusement park, help them to prepare their birthday parties, applaud for them when they are competing in the sports meeting, the time they spend with children will become treasure in their memories.Second, children need the direction from their parents. There are some wrong behaviors in our society such as dishonesty, corruption, violence and eroticism and so on. Children have weak resistance in defending this detrimental influence. In this case, parents' instructions seem to be very important to children's growth. Parents should sit down and talk with them about what they should do and should not do. In addition, if parents oftenspend time in staying with their children, adults' good behaviors will greatly influence their children. Here I do not deny that there are some disadvantages in spending too much time on children. Some parents restrict their children, and give them little freedom to develop their interests. Therefore, I emphasize that parents should educate and instruct their children appropriately in their spare time apart from their busy works.雅思大作文范文:家庭关系不紧密社会类:It is generally accepted that families are not as close as they used to be. 雅思英语作文 families 现在的家庭成员不像过去那样亲密了

It is generally acknowledged that families are now not as close as they used to be.Give some reasons why this change has happened and suggest how families could be brought closer together. Include any relevant examples from your experience. You should write at least 250 words.Model Answer 1:There is much discussion nowadays as to whether or not the relationship between family members is as close as before. Diverse contributing factors can be identified. In the following, I would like to present my point of view.Great changes have taken place in family life along with the development of society. One of them is that the once-extended family tends to become smaller and smaller. Many children have to leave their parents at an early age to study or work elsewhere. As time passes, children become emotionally estranged from their parents.Compared with the past, social competition is becoming increasingly fierce. People are urged to concentrate their efforts on their works so that they can achieve success or at least a good standard of living. As a result, they can’t affordto spend their leisure hours with their families. The importance of bonds of kinship is gradually fading from their minds. In addition, the availability of various kinds of recreational facilities also diverts people from enjoying chats with the members of their families. Their free time is mostly occupied by watching TV, surfing the Internet or playing video games. They come to lose interest in communicating with the other members of their families. In view of such alienation within families, urgent steps must be taken, in my opinion. For members of families who live away from one another, regularcontact on the phone can bring them the care that they need. Family reunions on holidays or other important occasions can make a difference as well. For those living together, it is a good idea to take some time off work or recreation periods to spend more time with each other. In the final analysis, a close family relationship can surely be maintained as long as we realise the significant role it plays in our lives and we attach importance to it.Model Answer 2:In the past, people mostly preferred to stay in the extended families. Today, it is observed that many individuals have their own nuclear families. In this essay, we will discuss how professional commitments forced people for opting this kind of families. To tackle this, an organisation’s role will be analysed. To begin with, individuals focus towards their career development to a greater extent. A good illustration for this is the group of professionals who spend most of their time in their companies. As a result, they do not have much time for themselves and hence, prefer staying in smallfamilies with less contact with other members. Thus, it is obvious that they are not much involved with other family members leading to the lack of closeness with them.To overcome this, companies can play a crucial role. The first step which a firm can take is to provide the work from home access to the employees. By doing this, they will allow their staff to spend more time with their families. The other steps which can be taken include declaring holidays on all festivals and organising family day in a company. This will allow them to spendmore periods with their families and hence, can help them to recuperate their relationships. From the above, it is clear that hectic work schedule act as a major hindrance for creating close bonds with family. Therefore, the companies should allow remote work, increase holidays and announce family days at workplaces for enforcing individuals to concentrate towards their relationships.。

Families Are Not As Close As Before Along with the development of the society more and more problems are brought to our attention, one of which is that families are not as close as before. To my mind, this is one of the side-effects brought about by this modern world. There are a number of reasons for this phenomenon.
Firstly, some customs and traditions, which are handed down from generation to generation, have changed with the changes of people life style and attitude. These customs and traditions once played an important role in bringing families together. For instance, science and technology have greatly changed the ways people communicate with each other, which are fast, fashionable but lack affection. Without modern facilities like computer and telephone, people used to get in touch with each other by writing letters by hand or meeting each other frequently, which are full of more human touch than mechanical contact. Secondly, in this bustling (熙熙攘攘) modern world in which material gains are much valued, people are attaching less importance to emotion and therefore are growing more and more isolated and indifferent to even family members. This is a sort of social illness that is hard to cure. Thirdly, some people are just too occupied to spare time for their family. And lastly, the loose relation of the older generation gives a negative impact on the younger generation who might follow suit in treating the family relationship.
Regarding these reasons, I think there some ways to bring families closer. The most important approach is through education. Parents should not only set a good example but also instill into their children from their childhood the sense of kinship and the sense of responsibility so that they may form some good habits like writing letters, visiting great-parents now and then. Secondly, all family members should try to squeeze some time for family activities such as a family party or a dinner together. In fact, there are many other factors that account for this problem and correspondingly there are other ways to bring families closer.。
