In fact, according to some estimates, over 30% of all adults in the world drink coffee at least once a day on the average.Coffee contains a kind of drug called caffeine (咖啡因). Caffeine is a chemical that stimulates (刺激) the nerves of the body. Drinking coffee tends to make people a little bit more awake-at least for a short time―because of this stimulating effect on the nervous system (系统). A cup of coffee has, on the average, about 3% caffeine in it.One story of the discovery of the coffee plant relates to this effect of caffeine. According to the story, coffee was discovered in East Africa. The story says that coffee was first found by a goat farmer named Kaldi. This was about the year 850. Kaldi was leading his animals through the mountains and the goats were stopping repeatedly to eat the plants near the path. Suddenly, some of the goats started jumping up and down in a very strange way.Kaldi figured out that the goats were acting this way because of the plants they were eating. Kaldi himself tried eating some of the green beans (豆荚) that the goats had been eating. He, too, felt the stimulating effect of the beans. Kaldi wanted to prove what had happened, so he picked some of the beans and took them back to his home village, where he told his story. The green bean got the name "Kaffa" and later "coffee" because the beans were discovered in a place called Kaffa in Africa. Then for years, people used to eat a few of the green Kaffa beans when they were in the mountains and needed extra energy to do their work. It was later found that the coffee beans could be picked and then dried until they turned brown, and then they could be stored. If the beans were dried and stored, they could be used at any time.1. What is the purpose of drinking coffee?A. To bee more awake.B. To bee more healthy.C. To bee more happy.D. To bee more clever.2. How did the goats react after eating the plants?A. They fell asleep.B. They could not find their way home.C. They started jumping up and down.D. They wanted to eat more.3. Why did the green bean get the name "Kaffa"?A. Because Kaldi loved his home village very much.B. Because Kaldi's goats loved the green bean very much.C. Because the beans were discovered in a place by this name.D. Because the beans could be picked and dried.BMalka and Shaindle are sisters. Although they live an hour's drive from each other and don’t see each other often, they are in touch. Malka has a large family. Shaindle, however, has had difficulty having children.Malka had just given birth to another son . Shaindle , married three years and still childless, was receiving fertility(生育) treatments. Involved with work , doctor’s visits, and medical treats, she was unable to make the trip to visit her sister after she had given birth.Malka knew her sister’s problem and was q uite understanding. Shaindle and her husband Feivel would be at the baptismal (洗礼)ceremony,of course. On the day of the baptism , Shaindle and Feivel arrived early, earlier than Malka and her family. Malka’s mother-in-law, Yehudit, was already at the ha ll. “Hello,” said Shaindle cheerfully, never thinking what was about to happen.Yehudit turned to her angrily and said, “What a selfish sister youare! Never once did you see fit to visit Makla this entire week! No wonder you have no children!”Shaindle went into shock at her words. She turned away, her eyes filled with tears. The accusation had cut Shaindle like a knife. She was psychologically bleeding. Poor Shaindle couldn’t calm down. It took a while before she could regain her calmness. She could n’t look at Yehudit; it was just too painful for her to do so.The minute the words had escaped Yehudit’s mo uth, she knew she had crossed a red line. She had stepped on very raw toes and felt regretted for her words –but it was too late. Her attempts to apologize were ineffective. The celebration had suddently turned sour in just a matter of seconds. After all these years, the memory of that happening lingers on …4. Shaindle didn’t visit her sist er after her sister gave birth because .A. she envied her sisterB. she lived too far from her sister.C. she was too busyD. she didn’t feel quite herself5. We can learn from the last paragraph that .A. Shaindle didn’t forgive Yehudit for many years.B. Yehudit didn’t realize how her words could affect ShaindleC . Shaindle couldn’t get rid of the bad memory for many years.D. Shaindle burst out anger at Malka’s mother-in-law.6. The purpose of the passage is to tell us .A. words can really hurt usB. sisters should care for each otherC. we should try to forget unpleasant thingD. two sisters’ different experiences7. The undeflined part “stepped on very raw toes” probably means .A. be impolite to somebodyB. hurt somebody deeplyC. meet somebody by accidentD. make fun of somebody.CPeople laugh and people cry.But it is thought that emotions such as anger, or joy, typically make Americans feel unfortable and embarrassed. The shedder of tears (落泪者) is likely to apologize, even when a great tragedywas the cause. The observer of tears is likely to do everything possible to put an end to the emotional tears. But judging from recent studies of crying behavior, both those responses to tears are often inappropriate and may even be counterproductive (适得其反).Humans are the only animals clearly known to shed emotional tears.Since evolution has given rise to few purposeless physiological responses, it is logical to assume that crying has one or more functions that increase survival.Although some observers have suggested that crying is a way to ask for assistance from others(as a crying baby might from its mother), the shedding of tears is hardly necessary to get help.Vocal (出声的) cries would have been quite enough, more likely than tears to gain attention. So, it appears that there must be something special about tears themselves.Indeed, the new studies suggest that emotional tears may play a direct role in easing stress.University of Minnesota researchers who are studying the chemical position of tears have recently separated two important chemicals from emotional tears. Both chemicals are found only in tears that are shed in response to emotion.Tears shed because of exposure to cut onion ,containing no such substance.Other researchers are looking into the usefulness of tears as a means of diagnosing human ills and monitoring drugs. At Tulane University's Teat Analysis Laboratory Dr.Peter Kast and his colleagues report that they can use tears to detect drug abuse, to study the causes of "dry eye" syndrome(综合征)and the effects of eye surgery, and perhaps even to measure exposure to environmental pollutants.8.What does the phrase "both those responses" in Paragraph 1 refer to ? A.Crying out of sorrow and shedding tears for happiness.B.The embarrassment and unpleasant feelings of the observers.C.Linking illness with crying and finding the chemical position of tears.D.The tear shedder' s apology and the observer' s effort to stop the crying.9.It is known from the first paragraph that____.A.shedding tears gives unpleasant feelings to AmericansB.crying may often result in tragedyC.crying usually wins sympathy from other peopleD.one who sheds tears in public will be blamed10.What does the author say about crying?A.It is a pointless physiological response to the environment.B.It must have a role to play in man' s survival.C.It is meant to get attention and assistance.D.It usually produces the desired effect.11.From the passage we can infer that____.A.it is unnatural for people to shed tearsB.we can reduce our stress by shedding tearsC.shedders of tears can' t get help by crying loudlyD.unlike animals, humans can shed tears for survivalDWhenever people think of charity, the first word that jumps into their mind may be money donated to the needy. However, Wugging, or web-use giving, describes the act of giving to charity at no cost to the user.By using Everyclick., which is being added to a number of university puters across the UK, students can raise money every time they searc h, but it won’t cost them a penny.Research shows that students are extremely enthusiastic about supporting charity —88% of full time students have used the Internet to give to charity. This figure is high considering this age group is often the least likely to have their own ine.19% of 22 to 24 year olds have short-term debts of more than 5,000.With rising personal debt levels in this age group, due to university tuition fees or personal loans and a lack of long-term savings, traditional methods of donating to charity are often not appealing or possible.Beth Truman, a 21-year-old recent university graduate, has used Everyclick. to donate to her chosen charity, the RSPCA, for two years and has seen the "Wugging" grow in popularity with students."When you're at university you bee more socially aware, but it's sometimes hard to give to others when you have little money yourself," says Beth."Wugging is great for people in this age group as it allows them to use the technology on a daily basis to give to charity, without costing them a single penny." Wugging is perfect for people who want to be more socially aware and supportive but don' t feel they have the means to do so.Students using the web can raise money for causes they care about without costing themanything in terms of time or money, and charities get a valuable source of funding.Everyclick. works like any other search engine, allowing users to search for information, news and images but users can decide which of the UK's 170,000 charities they would like to support through their clicks.Everyclick. then makes monthly payments to every registered charity.Launched in June xx, Everyclick. is now the eighth largest search engine and one of the busiest charity websites in the UK.12.According to the passage, "Wugging" is actually____.A.a charityrelated action B.a websiteC.a school organization D.a student movement13.In the case of charity, Everyclick.____.A.receives much money from students B.frees students of the financial worriesC.offers valuable information to students D.praises students for their money-raising14.From the passage, we can conclude that____.A.most full time students do charity on the Internet every day B.Everyclick.is the busiest charity website in the UK C.Everyclick. helps students pay for further education D."Wugging" is a win-win idea for both students and charities15.What would be the best title for the passage?A."Wugging", a popular term on the InternetB.Students collect money for charity by " Wugging"C.More British charities benefit from the InternetD.Charity enjoys increasing popularity with the British第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

I felt appreciated, but also guilty, because I hadn’t really done anything y et.I first realized the power of presence many years ago when a friend’s mother passed away unexpectedly. I had received a call saying she had just passed away. I wanted to rush down there immediately, but didn’t want to intrude(打扰)on this very personal period of sadness. I was torn about what to do. Another friend with me then said, “Just go. Just be there.” I did, and I will never regret it.Since then, I have not hesitated to be in the presence of others. Once I sat at the bedside of a young man suffering from the pain of his AIDS-related dying. He was not awake, and obviously unaware of others’ presence. However, the atmosphere was by no means solemn. His family, playing guitars and singing, allowed him to be present with them as though he were still fully alive. In my life, I am repeatedly struck by the healing power of presence. They’re the ones who’ve already built up much internship(实习)experience while still attending university, as their majors offer a co-operative program.Co-op programs, a feature(特色)of Canadian university programs, allow academic studies to be combined with work experience. During school years, students get to network with employers, gain internship experience in relevant fields, and earn academic credits that count toward their degree or diploma.Co-op programs are available in most comprehensive universities, like the University of Waterloo, Wilfrid Laurier University and York University. These programs are not only open to students majoring in business but also to many science and art majors. Statistics show that nearly 30 percent of recent foreign applicants have chosen majors that also subscribe to the co-op program. “It’s easy to understand,”said a senior education counselor. He noted that working opportunities are provided by employers that build bridges with the university and most of them are well-known companies or local government organizations. Moreover, the average salary for interns is as high as C$30,000 to C$40,000 a year.Students can choose to work during vacations or term-time freely. The required duration of the internship for undergraduates ranges from eight to twelve months, or four to six months forgraduate students. “The programs also benefit those students who want to apply for im mi gration,”added the counselor. “That’s because the policies of many pro vinces in Canada require a certain length of work experience of the applic ants.”29.What's the main characteristic of co-op programs?A. Culture.DIt’s cold and dark outside, and your bed is so warm and comfortable. Going for a run seems like such a bad idea. But before you hide your running shoes, it might be worth giving that crazy idea a go.According to The Huffington Post, an outdoor run in winter, as opposed to one on a treadmill (跑步机), burns more calories because the body is working hard to regulate(调节)its core temperature. Furthermore, research shows that race times are faster in cold weather than in warmer temperatures --- and quicker runs burn more calories. Similarly, cold weather also makes the heart work harder to distribute blood through the body, making that vital muscle even stronger.Outdoor exercise also turns up your energy and rids you of the stress and depression that build up every day. The heat and humidity in the summer can drag you down and tire you faster, but cold weather is refreshing. It adjusts you to your surroundings, making you feel alive.Of course, the threat of smog in some built-up areas is a further hurdle to winter exercise. Heart attacks, stroke, lung cancer and asthma are all dangers of running in smog. The combination of air pollution and exercise increases the potential problems. If you do choose to run outside on smoggy days, take a path in a park or residential area to avoid car exhaust(尾气), and go early in the morning, before rush hour. But staying inside on smoggy days and waiting for the next clear day to run is best.32.How does cold weather benefit runners, compared with warm weather?A. They can run more slowly.B. They can take in more calories.C. Their hearts can function harder.D. Their body temperature can get lower.33.How does summer affect runners?A. It builds up their energy quickly.B. It makes runners tired easily.C. It lessens runners’ stress.D. It causes heart attack.34.What are the runners supposed to do on smoggy days?A. Stop driving cars.B. Do more exercise.C. Avoid outdoor exercise.D. Run late in the morning.35.What can be the best title of the text?A. Refresh with a Winter RunB. Take Outdoor Exercise in SummerC. Go to Run in a ParkD. Follow the Tips to Reduce Stress第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)Correct planting methods can help a tree grow healthily. 36 One of them is choosing an improper planting place, which may be harmful to the tree. Some soils aren’t good for planting some trees. 37 It’ll help you determine the kind of fertilizers necessary for the tree.Digging too deep or too narrow a hole is also a mistake we tend to make while planting a tree. If the hole is dug too deep, the roots don’t get enough oxygen supply, resulting in improper growth of the tree. Besides, a narrow hole won’t allow the roots to expand and support the tree firmly.38 Ideally, the planting hole for a tree should be twice as wide and deep as the root ball.To protect the roots of a tree, we need to put a mulch (护根) on them. First of all, it’s really important to select the right type of mulch. 39 In addition, we must use a proper amount of mulching. Over mulching may cause damage to the roots, while inadequate mulching may result in dryness around the roots.40 Walk around the trees to recognize the problems that have appeared, and fix them before they go out of control.A. Different species require different planting places.B. Most newly planted trees die because of too much water.C. However, there are some mistakes we often make while planting trees.D. 高三英语周测卷(十五)(重点班)试卷满分:62分考试时间:50分钟命题教师:王丽霞一.阅读理解(每小题2分,满分32 分)AIt was summer and I was with my new colleagues. I’d graduated from college just two months earlier and relocated (搬家) to Chicago to work there. I barely knew Chicago, but luckily, my co-workers were friendly. We became so close that 13 of us spent a weekend together at the lake and rented a boat.On our last morning, I wanted to get back into the boat after swimming for a bit. But as I approached it, a force pulled me in. Within seconds, the lower half of my body was stuck between the boat’s propellers (螺旋桨). I reached down as the water around me turned deep red. Instead of feeling the flesh of my leg, my hand touched exposed muscle and bone.It took nearly 45 minutes for help to arrive. Until then, a few of my friends worked together to keep me alive. The next morning, I woke up in a hospital room. I later learned that when I arrived at the hospital, a team of 20 specialists tried to save my leg, but the damage was too extensive (广泛的). They amputated it above the knee. At least I’m alive, I thought. One year, six major surgeries, and countless hours of physical therapy later, I began to walk again. I tried my best to be upbeat (乐观的) and positive while relearning to walk, but even the simplest tasks made me frustrated. Sometimes, I just thought “Why me?”I continue to try to embrace my new life, but I’ve had to make adjustments. I’d actually been training for the Chicago half-marathon before the accident. I still plan to get back into training for it, but for now, I’m just grateful I can walk.I avoided showing my prosthetic leg (假肢) in public at first, but now, I wear shorts and dresses, whether I’m going out with friends or heading to the office. The only time I don’t wear the leg is in bed. While my accident may have flipped (颠覆) my world upside down, I’m still me.1. What do we know about the author from the first paragraph?A. Cooperative and generous.C. Ambitious and independent.D. Courageous and optimistic.BWhen I was a young man, I had a big ego and very little empathy (同理心). I thought I knew everything. I looked forward to fame and success. I can even remember arrogantly telling one of my friends in college: “If only everyone listened to me, they would all be happy.” I finally left school, ready to take on the world. Little did I know the world was about to take on me.In the years following college, instead of success, I found struggles. I had trouble finding work. The jobs I did work at were either temporary or back-breaking and none of them paid well. When my wife and I had children, we were shocked to learn that not one but both of our sons had autism (自闭症) and would need to be taken care of for the rest of their lives. I had no idea why this had happened to us and I was very angry with the world. In time, however, I began to change. My formerly massive ego was shrinking fast but my empathy was beginning to grow. Instead of finding joy in success, I found it in moments of love. Playing and laughing with my sons brought me so much happiness. My boys taught me more about peace, patience, kindness, joy, and unconditional love than I could have ever learned on my own. I began to share the lessons I learned through my writing and my life.I finally realized that my purpose in this world had nothing to do with fame or success and everything to do with allowing love and light into my life and sharing it with everyone I could.5.
