College is a time when many young people experiment and learn more about themselves. Some may have romantic relationships and even engage in sexual activity for the first time.But experimenting with sex has risks. Most college students in the U.S. arebetween 18 and 25 years old.Eloisa Llata is a medical researcher working on STD prevention for the CDC. Llata says throughout history, STDs have affected people between the ages of 15 and 24 more than any other group in the U.S.But she says the college environment does create unique risks. Llata notes that a student can come from a small community with a limited number of sexual partners to an area with a larger population.She also says the college experience can lead young people to engage in risky behavior.”These folks tend to be unmarried, have maybe more than one partner at a time, and college might be an area where things like binge drinking and drug use might play a larger role.”The CDC reported in April that the pregnancy rate among women age 15 to 19 in the U.S. reached an all-time low. Llata says this change is because more young people are using contraceptive methods such as the birth control pill. The pill is a type of medicine women must take every day to prevent pregnancies.But the pill does not prevent the spread of STDs.Llata says getting an STD has serious consequences. STDs can affect a woman’s ability to have children and may put people at greater risk for the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).Why have STD rates gone up?Laura Lindberg, a research scientist with the Guttmacher Institute, says the rise in STD rates is not yet a major cause for concern. The Guttmacher Institute is a noNPRofit organization that studies sexual health and policy in the U.S.Lindberg argues that a major reason the number of reported cases of STDs has gone up is because more people now have access to healthcare.People do not know they have an STD unless they get tested for STDs, she says. And most people do not go to the doctor because they believe they have an STD. Lindberg notes people most often get an STD test while they at the doctor for another reason.She argues sexual activity among young people has not gone up in ways doctors can measure. And condom use has decreased only a little. So, Lindberg says, the increase in STDs shows only that more young people are getting tested.Also, the increase is not enough information to prove the STD rate among young people will continue to increase, she adds.Why aren’t young people more careful?But Lindberg admits there is a problem: many young people do not think about the consequences of risky sexual activity. She says they are embarrassed about discussing sexual health. And, she says, they worry that if they get tested their parents will learn they are sexually active.Lindberg notes that the only people not at risk for STDs are those inlong-term relationships with a single partner. She says most relationships in college are newer and those involved may not limit themselves to one partner. This means sexually active college students should get tested regularly.But Lindberg says young people face a bigger problem than just embarrassment: education.”Today’s college students are part of a generation whose sex education that they received prior to college has been very weak. Many of them did not receive comprehensive sex education. They did not receive instruction and information about birth control. Instead, what they got was some version of an ‘abstinence until marriage program’ which left out key information about using condoms and contraception to protect themselves. So today’s college students need information. They need medically accurate information. They need honest information. And they need complete information.”A 2021 CDC report found fewer than half of the high schools in the U.S. taught all the suggested topics in their sex education classes. For example, Lindberg says, many young people may not know that most STDs can be treated. And they may not know that the birth control pill prevents only pregnancies. Couples may be risking STDs by not using condoms.Lindberg adds that STDs are a much bigger problem for young people who are not attending college. Often these young people live incommunities with less money. This means they have less access to healthcare and STD testing.Also, the American Medical Association, the American College Health Association and over 100 other organizations say sex education programs that only teach about waiting for sex until marriage do not work.Still, colleges can do a great deal to help their students, says Debby Herbenick. Herbenick is a professor at Indiana University in Bloomington. She is also the director of the Center for Sexual Health Promotion in the university’s School of Public Health.Herbenick and others in the center teach classes about human sexuality and gender. She says young men and women need to learn about how to respect each other and their own bodies.”They don’t always know that sexual pleasure is a good thing and that it’s something that, in fact, adults do expect them to explore and be experienced in. Some of them have been really shamed and just been taught that sex is bad. I think that many young people are just trying to figure out how to create sexual lives that are respectful, that are healthy. NIH held a conference of the nation's top Alzheimer's researchers where NIH Director Francis Collins discussed the plan.FRANCIS COLLINS: "We have learned more about this disease in the last couple of years than probably ever before. And now the goal is to take that and translate it into interventions."Early next year, scientists at the Banner Alzheimer's Institute in Arizona plan to begin human testing of an experimental drug. The drug is called crenezumab, and the hope is it will prevent Alzheimer's.The study will involve members of a large extended family living in villages in the Medellin area in Colombia. Some of the family members have a rare genetic disorder that causes them to get early-onset Alzheimer's. They begin to show signs of mental loss in their mid-forties and fully develop the disease by their early fifties.Three hundred people have agreed to be in the study. One-third of them will receive crenezumab. The others will be given a placebo , a pill that does not contain any drug. They will not know if they have been given the drug or the placebo. The study will also include a smaller number of people in the United States.Pierre Tariot will help lead the study, known as a human trial. He says all of the people have been informed that the drug might not work or that they might receive a placebo. Mr. Tariot says the people still wanted to be in the study.PIERRE TARIOT: "They have been faced with this devastating illness hitting every generation for hundreds of years. As one of them put it, 'There are many rivers to cross but at least we're at the first bank.' These details are not only sounds, she notes. Native speakers also communicate by using pauses, and by saying some words more forcefully than others.As a result, native speakers might not understand an English learner even if the learner pronounces sounds correctly.The problem with 'listening and repeating'Yoshida says that English learners often study pronunciation by listening and repeating something from a recording.Yoshida says that English learners need to do more than listen and repeat in order to improve their pronunciation: “I've gradually gotten really interested in pronunciation because it's something that students have trouble with, but they don't always get a lot of really good instruction in it. They just have someone say 'Listen to this recording and repeat … and now, aren't you better?' No! You're not necessarily better. It takes more than that.”The problem with listen and repeat, says Yoshida, is that when people repeat, they are often not trying to sound like the other person.“You think that when students are repeating after the teacher, or whatever, they're trying to sound exactly like thatperson, but they're not.The sounds that you hear go into your brain … and you r brain interprets them or filters them through the sound system of your own language, and what your brain ends up understanding is not everything –it's not what the speaker intended…You have to try to get past that filter and hear all of the details that are important to someone else.So you have to try to duplicate what the person is saying.' What details should you try to copy when you listen to an English speaker? Among others, the important details include pauses or breaths, which words to emphasize -- or give special attention to, and intonation– the up and down movement of your voice as you speak.English speakers, in particular, use a broad range of up and down movements in their voices. These movements can be difficult for English learners to recognize and understand.Native English speakers might have difficulty understanding English learners when learners use a narrow range of their voice. In other words, native speakers have fewer vocal restrictions when they are speaking. English learners also may use intonation patterns that are different from those in Standard English.Studying how native speakers use intonation will help English learners better understand what native speakers do with their voices.Practical tips:If English learners want to start improving their pronunciation, Yoshida suggests that they do an activity called shadowing.“Shadowing means finding a sho rt audio or video clip that you like… that's maybe 30 seconds long, one minute long, atmost two minutes long, and listen to it. Listen to it a couple of times to get the meaning, and to hear where the speaker pauses, and what they emphasize … and what the intonation sounds like –because those are really important things too –not just the sounds. Pronunciation is much more than saying each sound correctly because you can say each sound correctly and still sound really hard to understand…So, find a short clip, listen to it, mark things that you notice, then listen a few more times just to sort of let those sounds become a part of your brain, and then start imitating. And imitate trying to sound exactly like that person.”What does shadowing look like?Here is a short example of what a shadowing activity could look like.The example comes from Martha Kolln's book Rhetorical Grammar:'One of the most important aspects of your expertise with sentences is your sense of rhythm.'Listen to the sentence several times.Then try to mark the intonation of the voice. Listen for emphasized words.In the sentence, you can hear that some syllables are emphasized, while others are not. Overall, the voice falls after important syllables, notably at the end of the sentence.English sentences often emphasize words at the end of a sentence – the place where you usually find new information. Study Adds to Understanding of Language and the Brain
A new study suggests that the brain is even more complex than scientists have recognized
But while she is in the hospital, she is also helping scientists understand how the brain works with language. The study centers on a part of the frontal lobe called Broca's area. Pierre Paul Broca was a nineteenth century French doctor. He first recognized the big part that this small area plays in language.

Eric Halgren at the University of California, San Diego, School of Medicine is one of the main investigators. He says they found different regions doing, at different times, different processes all within a centimeter. The first function deals with recognizing a word. The second deals with understanding the word's meaning within a sentence. And the third lets us speak the word. Harvard University brain expert Steven Pinker is another author of the study. A report on the work appeared in the journal Science. Ned Sahin, a researcher at Harvard and the University of California, San Diego, School of Medicine, was the first author of the paper. He says scientists have known for some time that traditional explanations for how parts of the brain work need to be changed. One such belief is that there is a separation of language tasks between two very different parts of the brain. One is Broca's area at the front. The other is Wernicke's area farther back in the brain. That area is named after the nineteenth century German neurologist Carl Wernicke. The belief is that Broca's area is responsible for speaking and that Wernicke's area is responsible for comprehending. But the new study shows that Broca's area is involved in both speaking and comprehension. Neil Sahin says this shows how parts of the brain perform more than one task. NEIL SAHIN: "Because here's an example of one relatively small part of the brain that's doing three very different things at three different times, but all within the space of a quarter of a second." Yet, even with new findings like these, much about the brain still remains a mystery -- at least for now. And that's the VOA Special English Health Report, with reporting by Mike O'Sullivan.
