Ask three people to look out the same window at a busy street corner and tell you what they see. Chances are you will receive three different answers. Each person sees the same scene, but each perceives something different about it.
Perceiving goes on in our minds. Of the three people who look out the window, one may say that he sees a policeman giving a motorist a ticket. Another may say that he sees a rush hour traffic jam at the intersection. The third may tell you that he sees a woman trying to cross the street with four children in tow. For perception is the mind’s interpretation of what the senses—in this case our eyes—tell us.
Many psychologists (心理学家) today are working to try to determine just how a person experiences or perceives the world around him. Using a scientific approach, these psychologists set up experiments in which they can control all of the factors. By measuring and charting the results of many experiments, they are trying to find out what makes different people perceive totally different things about the same scene.1. No matter how much we argue against it or pretend to be immune, beauty exerts its power over us. There is simply no escape.
Aristotle said, “Beauty is a greater recommendation than any letter of introduction.” It’s not fair, but it’s true. But many would be surprised to learn that twenty million Americans ride motorcycles. Few people realize that motorcycling is fast becoming one of America’s most popular sports.
Many kinds o f people enjoy motorcycling. The average American motorcyclist is between the ages of twenty-one and thirty-five. He owns his own house, and has a wife, more than one child, and at least one car. He is a responsible citizen.
Cycle Magazine, a monthly publication with almost 280,000 readers, claims that about fifty-five per cent of American motorcyclists arebusinessmen, with three per cent in the professions and nine per cent in government service. Such information is offered by motorcyclists in the hop e of improving the general public’s impression of their sport. The public has tended to believe that all motorcycles are ridden by wild, irresponsible, lawless young man.
There are several things about motorcycling that the average citizen dislikes. Motorcyclists often look dirty; in fact, they are dirty. On the road there is little to protect them from mud, crushed insects, and bird droppings. For practical reasons they often dress in old clothing which looks much less respectable than the clothing of people who ride in cars.
Probably the machine itself also produces anger and fear. Motorcycles are noisy, though some big trucks are even noisier. But trucks are big and carry heavy loads; they are accepted because they perform a needed service, making America move. Motorcycles, on the other hand, make an unpleasant noise just to give their riders pleasure. That is what is commonly thought.
Of course the danger of motorcycling also helps account for many people’s low opinion of the sport. Its defend ers, however, claim that careful cyclists are in less danger than is commonly believed.
As motorcycling becomes more common in years to come, it will be interesting to see how people in general feel about the sport. Perhaps it will someday become as “respectable” as tennis or golf.
Motorcyclists. IQ contributes about 20 percent to the factors that determine life success, which leaves 80 percent to other forces, including EQ, she noted. Goleman writes that “the vast majority of one’s ultimate status in soci ety is determined by non-IQ factors, ranging from social class to luck”. Emotional intelligence is one of those factors that can be improved or enhanced.

According to Kilgore, understanding and practicing five key concepts can improve your emotiona l intelligence.

Knowing one’s own emotions

Recognize and name emotions you feel; understand why you feel that way; and distinguish between feelings and actions. “As a parent, you can begin now with your children, teaching them about their emotions. But first you have to know your own. You have to be able to tell yourself what you’re feeling,” Kilgore said.

Recognizing emotions in others

The ability to take another person’s perspective, Kilgore said, is a skill that effective managers and supervisors possess. Emotionally intelligent individuals also are sensitive to other people’s feelings and listen well. Kilgore led workshop participants through an exercise designed to illustrate these ideas. She showed two emotionally charged clips from the movies Parenthood and E.T., asking individuals to write down emotions they saw exhibited by the characters’ body language. Participants also wrote down their own feelings during each scene. The group’s list demonstrated the many emotions seen through the films’ characters, as well as the different ways people felt about the same scenes.

Managing emotions

Accept your feelings, but find a balance between over sensitivity or over expression and emotional suppression. Kilgore said her teenage daughters, when angry, have sometimes stomped up the stairs in their home. While some people may find this behavior unacceptable, Kilgore said shefinds it healthy for them to express their emotions rather than suppressing them.

Handling relationships

Being perceptive, applying conflict management skills instead of ignoring conflict, and being considerate and cooperative are important in handling relationships with others. How could this happen? People used to think that hard work is the only way to success. But now they have understood that smart work can make them succeed too. Hard workers don’t mind working for long hours, while smart workers alwa ys think of several different answers to these questions, such as “Why should I suffer this?” or “Isn’t there a better way to do this?” Thanks to these people, we can use computers instead of the abacus now. progress in every field is the direct result of “trying to find a better way” by smart workers. There was a large soap factory in Japan. Once it received an unusual letter from someone who complained that there was no soap in the soap in the soapbox he bought. How could empty soapboxes go out of the factory? The engineers checked the producing and packing. The producing was fine, but in about ten thousand soapboxes, the packing machine let an empty soapbox go. There was no need to spend a lot of money repairing the machine for such a small problem. The engineer soon worked out a solution. He put a huge X-ray machine and two large computers to find out the empty soapboxes. After teaching the workers how to use it, he sat down in his seat, exhausted.“Sir, we could have solved the problem in a much simpler and cheaper way,” a worker said.“Really? How?”“We can put a huge fan near the packing machine. The wind coming from the fan will blow away the empty boxes, leaving the other boxes with soap.”See, this is smart work. In order to succeed, we should not only work hard like the engineer, but also think smart like this worker.1. Some students spend less time on school work but do better in exams because they study longer.A: FB: T答案: AThe passage mainly tells us we should work hard like the engineer and think smart like the worker.A: TB: F答案: AThe soap factory could only put a huge fan near the packing machine to solve problem in a much simpler and cheaper way.A: FB: T答案: BThe underlined phrase “blow away”means “停止”in Chinese.A: TB: F答案: BSomeone wrote to the soap factory and complained that the soapbox he bought was terrible.A: FB: T答案: B【46】The English language started about 1,500 years ago in England. Three groups of people came to the country. They were the Angles, the Saxons, and the Jutes. These three groups brought their languages with them to the country. After some time, the three languages became one new language —English. The name “English” comes from the Angles. They lived in most of England. The language that we speak today—Modern English is not the same as the English that people used 1,500 years ago, including Old English (before 1150) and Middle English (up till 1500).
