“ 哥特式”(‘gothic)这个词在英语里有多种含义。它 既是一个文学词汇,又是一个历史术语,还可以用作建筑 和艺术方面的专门用语。
属于英语文学派别,起源于18世纪后期的英国,是西方 通俗文学中惊险神秘小说的一种,可以说是恐怖电影的鼻 祖。
显著的哥特小说元素包括恐怖,神秘,超自然,厄运, 死亡,颓废,住着幽灵的老房子,癫狂,家族诅咒等。

越往前走,地窖也就越阴暗,空气也越稀薄, 这对于呼吸受阻的弗图纳多来说也就越危险。在这里, 火把由原来的“flame” ( 熊熊燃烧的火焰) 变成了 “glow” (微弱的火点),一方面强调了地窖阴冷潮湿, 空气稀薄,环境恶劣的程度; 另一方面也象征着弗图 纳多的生命正在走向终点。
