Translucent concrete is used in fine architecture as a facade material and for cladding of interior walls. Lighttransmitting concrete has also been applied to various design products.
From Figure 12-(a), fiber grating can work well and monitor strain as large as 2050me whereas figure 12-(b) shows the similar tendency for fiber grating as well as traditional resistance strain gauge.

Physical Mechanism
Plastic Optical Fiber (POF) is a media to transmit lights at eligible wavelength based on its special structure in which the core refractive index is bigger than the coating’s refractive index. Thus the lights can be transmitted through POF in the form of total reflection. As POF has a much larger core size and larger numerical aperture than common SiO2 based optical fiber, it is able to absorb light at incident angle as large as 60°and provides a better light guiding system.

What is POF and FBG ?
a. POF: PMMA (acrylic) comprises the core (96% of the cross section in a fiber 1mm in diameter), and fluorinated polymers are the cladding material. High refractive index difference is maintained between core and cladding; Attenuation loss is about 1 dB/m @ 650 nm; Have high mechanical flexibility and low cost.

Introduction
Hungarian architect, Aron Losonczi, first proffered the idea of light transmitting concrete in 2001 and then successfully produced the first transparent concrete block in 2003, named as LiTraCon , shown as figure 1.
By analyzing performance change in those waves, the external physical condition can be estimated.
Advantages: (Compared with traditional resistance strain gauge) high precision; quasi-distributed monitoring; relatively small volume; anti-electromagnetic interference; anti-corrosion; non-skilled handling and ruggedness; some can provide property as absolute measurement.
