Not long ago,the Information Highway was a new road, with not many users. Now,everyone seems to want to take a drive, with over 30 million families connected worldwide. Naturally, accidents will happen on such a crowded road, and usually victims are some files, gone forever. Then,of course, there’s Mr. Cool, with his new broad-band connection, who speeds down the highway faster than most of us can go. Y ou can use it to fly a kite or to sail a boat. Wind is one of our cleanest and richest power sources (来源), as well as one of the oldest. Evidence shows that windmills (风车) began to be used in ancient Iran back in the seventh century BC. They were first introduced to Europe during the 1100s, when armies returned from the Middle East with knowledge of using wind power. For many centuries, people used windmills to grind (磨碎) wheat into flour or pump water from deep underground. When electricity was discovered in the late 1800s, people living in remote areas began to use them to produce electricity. This allowed them to have electric lights and radio. However, by the 1940s when electricity was available to people in almost all areas of the United States, windmills were rarely used.During the 1970s, people started becoming concerned about the pollution that is created when coal and gas are burned to produce electricity. People also realized that the supply of coal and gas would not last forever. Then, wind was rediscovered, though it means higher costs. Today, there is a global movement to supply more and more of our electricity through the use of wind.60. The global trend towards producing power from wind.CThey are the sort of friends who are so close they trust each other with their lives. Until one day Wellman decided that be wanted to climb again and they started training.Their climb of Half Dome was not all smooth. He makes his case in a new book. Listening for Meaning in a World of Noise. Here he explains himself (using his indoor voice): “We’ve become so accustomed to noise, there’s almost a deep prejudice against the idea thatsilence might be beneficial. If you tell someone to be quiet, you sound like an old man. But it’s never been important to find continuing quiet. Silence focuses us, improves our health, and is a key to lasting peace and satisfaction.”“We need to excite people about the sounds you start to hear if you merely quiet things down a little. During a Japanese tea ceremony, the smallest sounds become a kind of art —the spoons making a light ringing sound on a bowl, the edges of a kimono(和服)brushing against the floor.“Deaf people are very attentive(专注的)in almost every aspect of life. If two deaf people are walking together, using sign language, they constantly watch out for each other and protect each other by paying steady attention to the other. They are connected yet also fully aware of their surroundings. Even deaf teenagers! We in the hearing world can learn from them. If we remove the powerful blasts (一阵阵)of noise, we become aware of an extraordinarily rich world around us—of little soft sounds and the sound of footsteps, of bird songs and ice cracking (开裂声). The collection of happiness actions broadly categorized as "honor" help you create this life of good feelings. Here's an example to show how honorable actions create happiness.Say a store clerk fails to charge us for an item.If we keep silent, and profit from the clerk's mistake, we would drive home with a sense of sneaky excitement.Later we might tell our family or friends about our good fortune. On the other hand, if we tell the clerk about the uncharged item, the clerk would be grateful and thank us for our honesty. We would leave the store with a quiet sense of honor that we might never share with another soul. Then, what is it to do with our sense of happiness? In the first case, where we don't tell the clerk, a couple of things would happen.Deep down inside we would know ourselves as a type of thief. In the process, we would lose some peace of mind and self-respect.We would also demonstrate that we cannot be trusted, since we advertise our dishonor by telling our family and friends. We damage our own reputations by telling others. In contrast, bringing the error to the clerk's attention causes different things to happen.Immediately the clerk knows us to be honorable.Upon leaving the store, we feel honorable and our self-respect is increased.Whenever we take honorable action we gain the deep internal rewards of goodness and a sense of nobility. There is a beautiful positive cycle that is created by living a life of honorable actions.Honorable thoughts lead to honorable actions.Honorable actions lead us to a happier existence. And it's easy to think and act honorably again when we're happy. While the positive cycle can be difficult to start, once it's started, it's easy to continue.Keeping on doing good deeds brings us peace of mind, which is important for our happiness.56.According to the passage, the positive action in the example contributes to our_________.A.self-respect B.financial rewardsC.advertising ability D.friendly relationship57.The phrase "bringing the error to the clerk's attention" (in para.5)means___.A.telling the truth to the clerk B.offering advice to the clerkC.asking the clerk to be more attentiveD.reminding the clerk of the charged item58.How will we feel if we let the clerk know her mistake?A.We'll be very excited.B.We'll feel unfortunate.C.We'll have a sense of honor.D.We'll feel sorry for the clerk.59.Which of the following can be the best title of this passage.*A.How to Live TruthfullyB.Importance of PeacefulnessC.Ways of Gaining Self-respectD.Happiness through Honorable ActionsBJane Austen, a famous English writer, was born at Steventon, Hampshire, on December 16,1775, and died on July 18, 1817.She began writing early in life, although the prejudices of her times at the dinner table knows, there is far more to a family meal than food.Sociologist Michael Lewis has been studying 50 families to find outjust how much more.Lewis and his co-workers carried out their study by videotaping(录像)the families while they ate ordinary meals in their own homes. They found that parents with small families talk actively with each other and their children. But as the number of children gets larger, conversation gives way to the parents’ efforts to control the loud noise they make. That can have an important effect on the children.“In general the more question-asking the parents do, the higher the children’s IQ scores,” Lewis says.“And the more children there are, the less question-asking there is.”The study also provides an explanation for why middle children often seem to have a harder time in life than their siblings(兄弟姐妹).Lewis found that in families with three or four children, dinner conversation is likely to center on the oldest child, who has the most to talk about, and the youngest, who needs the most attention.“Middle children are invisible,” says Lewis.“When you see someone get up from the table and walk around during dinner, chances are it’s the middle child.” There is, however, one thing that stops all conversation and prevents anyone from h aving attention: “When the TV is on,” Lewis says, “dinner is a non-event.”64.The writer’s purpose in writing the text is to ______.A.show the relationship between parents and childrenB.teach parents ways to keep order at the dinner tableC.report on the findings of a studyD.give information about family problems65.Parents with large families ask fewer questions at dinner because ______.A.they are busy serving food to their childrenB.they are busy keeping order at the dinner tableC.they have to ______.A.have to help their parents to serve dinnerB.get the least attention from the familyC.are often kept away from the dinner tableD.find it hard to keep up with other children67..Which of the Left in a bank it will hardly keep its value, however high the interest rate.Only a brave man, or a very rich one, dares to buy and sell on the Stock Market.Today it seems that one of the best ways to protect your savings, and even increase your wealth is to buy beautiful objects from the past. Here I am going to offer some advice on collecting antique clocks, which I personally consider are among the most interesting of antiques.I sometimes wonder what a being from another planet might report back about our way of life."The planet Earth is ruled by a mysterious creature that sits or stands in a room and makes astrange ticking sound. It has a face with twelve black marks and two hands.Men can do nothing without its permission, and it fastens its young round people's wrists so that everywhere men go they are still under its control. This creature is the real master of Earth and men are its slaves."Whether or not we are slaves of time today depends on our culture and personality, but it is believed that many years ago kings kept special slaves to tell the time.Certain men were very clever at measuring the time of clay according to the beating of their own hearts. They were made to stand in a fixed place and every hour or so would shout the time.So it seems that the first clocks were human beings. However, men quickly found more convenient and reliable ways of telling the time. They learned to use the shadows cast by the sun. They marked the hours on candles, used sand in hour- glasses, and invented water-clocks.Indeed, any serious student of antique should spend as much time as possible visiting palaces, stately homes and museums to see some of the finest examples of clocks from the past.Antique clocks could be very expensive, but one of the joys of collecting clocks is that it is still possible to find quite cheap ones for your own home. After all, if you are going to be ruled by time, why not invest in an antique clock and perhaps make a future profit?68.According to the passage, collecting antique clocks____.A.can hardly keep the value of your savingsB.will cost much of your savingsC.may increase your wealthD.needs your bravery69.Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a way to measure the time?A.Counting the beating of one's own heart.B.Making use of candles, sand and water.C.Observing shadows cast by the sun.D.Keeping slaves busy day and night.70.The underlined phrase stately homes in paragraph 4 meansA.state-owned housesB.houses in very good conditionC.grand houses open to the publicD.houses where statesmen meet regularly第二节:根据短文内容,选择能填入空白出的最佳选项,选项中有两项多余,将答案写在答卷纸上(共五小题10分)答案写在答卷纸上______1 Scientists and experts have proved the uniqueness of finger-prints and discovered that no exactly similar pattern is passed on from parents to children, though nobody knows why this is the case. The ridge (隆起)structure on a person's fingers does not change with growth and is not affected by surface injuries.Burns, cuts and other damage to the outer part of the skin will be replaced in time by new one, which bears a reproduction of the original pattern.2_____ Some criminals make use of this fact to remove their own finger-prints but this is a dangerous and rare step to take.Finger-prints can be made very easily with printer's ink. They can be recorded easily.3_____ Because of the simplicity and economy of this system, finger-prints have often been used as a method of solving criminal case.A suspected man may deny a charge but this may be in vain.4_______When a suspect leaves finger-prints behind at the scene of a crime, they are difficult to detect with the naked eye.5_____ Some of the marks found are incomplete but identification is possible if a print of a quarter of an inch square can be obtained.A.Special techniques are used to "develop" them.B.A fingerprint is an impression of the friction ridges of all part of he finger.C.It is only when the inner skin is injured that the arrangement will be destroyed.D.With special methods, identification can be achieved successfully within a short time.E.A latent print is the chance reproduction of the friction ridges deposited on the surface of an item.F.His finger-prints can prove who he is even if his appearance has been changed by age or accident.G.Every human being has a unique arrangement of the skin on his fingers and this arrangement is unchangeable第三节短文改错(共10小题,每小题1分,满分10分)增加:在缺词处加一个漏字符号(∧),并在此符号下面写出该加的词。
