AJimmy is an automotive mechanic, but he lost his job a few months ago. He has a good heart, but always feared applying for a new job.One day, he gathered up all his strength and decided to attend a job interview. His appointment was at 10 a.m. and it was already 8:30. While waiting for a bus to the office where he was supposed to be interviewed, he saw an elderly man wildly kicking the tyre of his car. Obviously there was something wrong with the car. Jimmy immediately went up to lend him a hand. When Jimmy finished working on the car, the old man asked him how much he should pay for the service. Jimmy said there was no need to pay him; he just helped someone in need, and he had to rush for an interview. Then the old man said, “Well, I could take you to the office for your interview. It‟s the least I could do. Please, I insist.” Jimmy agreed.Upon arrival, Jimmy found a long line of applicants waiting to be interviewed. Jimmy still had some grease on him after the car repair, but he did not have much time to wash it off or have a change of shirt. One by one, the applicants left the intervie wer‟s office with disappointed looks on their faces. Finally his name was called. The interviewer was sitting on a large chair facing the office window. Rocking the chair back and forth, he asked, “Do you really need to be interviewed?” Jimmy‟s heart sank.“With the way I look now, how could I possibly pass this interview?” He thought to himself. Then the interviewer turned the chair and to Jimmy‟s surprise, it was the old man he helped earlier in the morning. It turned out he was the General Manager of the company.“Sorry I had to keep you waiting, but I was pretty sure I made the right decision to have you as part of our workforce before you even stepped into this office. I just know you‟d be a trustworthy worker. Congratulations!” Jimmy sat down and the y shared a cup of well-deservedcoffee as he landed himself a new job.21. Why did Jimmy apply for a new job?A. He was out of work.B. He was bored with his job.C. He wanted a higher position.D. he hoped to find a better boss.22. What did Jimmy see on the way to the interview?A. A friend‟s car had a flat tyre.B. A wild man was pushing a car.C. A terrible car accident happened.D. An old man‟s car broke down.23. Why did the old man offer Jimmy a ride?A. He was also to be interviewed.B. He needed a traveling companion.C. He always helped people in need.D. He was thankful to Jimmy .24. How did Jimmy feel on hearing the interviewer‟s question?A. He was sorry for the other applicants.B. There was no hope for him to get the job.C. He regretted helping the old man.D. The interviewer was very rude.BSome people think that success is only for those with talent or those who grow up in the right family, and others believe that success mostly comes down to luck. I'm not going to say luck, talent, and circumstances don't come into play because they do. Some people are born into the right family while others are born with great intelligence, and that's just the reality of how life is.However, to succeed in life, one first needs to set a goal and then gradually make it more practical. And, in additional to that, in order to get really good at something, one needs to spend at least 10,000 hours studying and practising. To become great at certain things, it'll require even more time, time that most people won't put in.This is a big reason why many successful people advise you to do something you love. If you don't enjoy what you do, it is going to feel like unbearable pain and will likely make you quit well before you ever become good at it.When you see people exhibiting some great skills or having achieved great success, you know that they have put in a huge part of their life to get there at a huge cost. It's sometimes easy to think they got lucky or they were born with some rare talent, but thinking that way does you no good, and there's a huge chance that you're wrong anyway.Whatever you do , if you want to become great at it, you need to work day in and day out, almost to the point of addiction, and over a long period of time. If you're not willing to put in the time and work, don't expect to receive any rewards. Consistent, hard work won't guarantee you the level of success you may want, but it will guarantee that you will become really good at whatever it is you put all that work into.25. Paragraph 1 mainly talks about ______.A. the reasons for success.B. the meaning of successC. the standards of success.D. the importance of success26. In Paragraph 2, the underlined word "that" refers to _______.A. being good at something.B. setting a practical goal.C. putting in more time.D. succeeding in life27. What can we infer from Paragraph 4?A. Successful people like to show their great skills.B. People sometimes succeed without luck or talent.C. People need to achieve success at the cost of life.D. It helps to think that luck or talent leads to success.28. What is the main theme of the passage?A. Having a goal is vital to success.B. Being good is different from being great.C. One cannot succeed without time and practice.D. Luck, talent and family help to achieve success.C.Interested in sharing your views in the Campus Link? They can affect the ability to listen or think, or to speak, or to read, or to write and do mathematics.A person with a learning disability has unusual difficulty in developing these skills. Researchers believe that learning disabilities are caused by differences in the way that the brain works with information. They say children with learning disabilities are not unintelligent or do not want to work. Their brains just process information differently than other people. Researchers say that one in five people in America has some kinds of learning disability. Almost three million children in America receive some kinds of help in school for a learning disability. How can you tell if someone has a learning disability? A few signs of a learning disability include not connecting letters with their sounds or not understanding what is read. A person with a learning disability may not be able to understand a funny story. They may not follow directions. The ducks however at this time were ugly, and bulky(笨重的) and just frantically(狂乱的) kicked their short legs to swim. The swans wouldn't let the ducks swim with them, which angered the ducks since they too lived at that pond. One day while the swans and ducks were arguing about which group would swim first a flock of geese came over as they were passing by to see what all the fuss was about. They listened, and found that the swans were vain and thought that since they were prettier, so they should use the pond first. They also found that the ducks thought that they should use it because the last time the swans refused to let them have their turn.Thena goose said that they should share the pond since it was rather large. The swans unsurprisingly got mad at this so a fight broke out. The ducks were pulling at the swans’ feet, and the geese were honking and biting the swans necks, and pulled as hard as they could. About an hour later the fight had ended. The ducks and geese stood there looking humorously at the swans. They had stretched the swans’ necks out so far that they couldn't hold their heads up. A few hours later the swans had finally shortened their necks at least to the point where they could steadily hold them. But after that day swans, ducks, and geese shared all the ponds in peace, and there were no taking turns. But still today the swans have fairly long necks. 6. Why did the ducks become angry?A. One way is to study the clothing other people wear. For thousands of years, people in different parts of the world have worn very different types of clothing. There are four big reasons for this. One reason might be religion. In many Moslem countries, women must wear veils(面纱)t o hide their faces. The veils must be worn in public. Veils are part of the Moslem religion. The second reason is that different materials are used in different countries. For instance, in France the materials used in clothing may be cotton, silk, wool, or many other man-made materials. Most people in China wear cotton. The ways clothes are made are also very different. This is another reason why people dress differently. Western countries rely on machines to make most of their clothing. Someone living in India can use only hand power to make the clothing he needs.World-wide differences in customs also lead to differences in clothing. A Mexican farmer wears a straw hat with a brim(帽沿)up. In China, a farmer wears a straw hat with a brim down. Both hats are used to protect the farmers from the sun. Some of these customs have come down through thousands of years.11. If you want to learn about the differences about people in the world, you_____.A. should know the ways to study other landsB. should know the four big reasons given in the passageC. may study the different types of clothing people wearD. may be surprised by the ways people wear《大学英语1》A卷第 2 页,共 4 页系 专业班级 学号 姓名…………………………
