Task2. About education

1.Some students prefer to have classes in the morning and do their part-time jobs in the evening. Others prefer to have classes in the evening and do their part-time job in the morning. Which do you prefer and why ?Use specific reasons and examples to support your response .

As far as I am concerned, I prefer to have classes in the morning and do my part-time job in the evening. First of all, as a student, attending courses is of the first importance. Thus I should give priority to class rather than part-time job. If I do my part-time job in the morning, I will probably feel exhausted in the evening and pay no attention to my teacher in classes. I mean, studying in the morning is much more efficient than in the evening. So, I will choose to attend classes in the daytime.

2.Some students prefer to review their notes regularly; while others prefer to review their notes just before the test. Which do you prefer and explain why?

As far as I am concerned, I prefer to review my notes regularly rather than just before the test. First of all, if the test is around the corner, having reviewed my notes regularly will not only diminish the time I spend on preparation for the test, but also probably get me a higher grade than those who review their notes just before the test. In addition, getting a good score is not the primary purpose of learning. Studying is for increasing one’s knowledge. And only through reviewing the note regularly, will a student achieve steady progress in study.

3.Some university students would prefer to study full-time; others would prefer to study part-time. Which do you prefer and why?

As far as I am concerned, I prefer to study part-time rather than full-time. First of all, studying full-time is too stressful for me. Studying part-time will provide me with more time to review the lesson, and thus I will have a deep understanding of the knowledge. And, studying part-time can also provide me enough time to put my knowledge into practice. For example, my major is marketing, which is subject of the character of practice. And it is important for me to get a relevant job in the spare time. So, I prefer to study part time.

4.Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Students should always study in quiet places .Use specific reasons and examples to support your position.

As far as I am concerned, students do not always need to study in quiet places. First of all, although it's common sense that quiet place is ideal for students, sometimes noise can not be avoided. For instance, there may be some people getting in and out of the study room in order to answer the phone or go to the toilet. Therefore it is very essential for students to bear some noises. And also, it is not the environment, but the mind that plays important role in learning efficiency. Mao Zedong, one of the greatest leaders of our country in history, used to read in the Tiananmen Square intently. And Mao was so concentrated on his book that he didn’t affect by the noisy environment.

5.Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? The most important lessons cannot be learned in classroom. Use specific reasons and examples to support your response.

I agree with the idea that the most important lesson can’t be learnt in class. First of all, I regard the ability of solving problems by oneself as one of the most important lessons. However, what we are taught in classroom is just the knowledge written in books, but not the way to deal with problems. And also, I think some important skills can only be obtained through practice. For example, swimming is an important lesson, which cannot be taught in classroom, but only by practicing it on oneself.

6.Some people think that university students should stay in the classroom. Others think that they should do more practice exercises outside classroom .Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

I agree that students should do more practice exercises outside classroom instead of staying in the classroom all the time.

7.Some students like to take online courses. Others like to take traditional classroom courses. Which do you prefer? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

As far as I am concerned, I prefer the Internet-based teaching. First of all, online courses are much more convenient than traditional classroom courses. You don’t have to attend the class at the specific time and a place. Whenever signing up on the Internet, you can begin the class, and your learning schedule is all up to you! And also, online courses save resources. Through the Internet, a professor’s lecture can be shared by a great number of students, even thousands or more. What’s more, no matter how many students are taking the class, there is no need to worry about being interrupted by others students on the online courses!

8.Some college students prefer to attend classes regularly because they believe that only in the class atmosphere can they focus on the reading. Others, however, believe that the best reading can only be done outside the classroom. Which reading method do you think is better and why?

As far as I am concerned, I prefer to reading in the classroom rather outside the classroom. First of all, since we enjoy quiet environment, which is ideal for learning knowledge, in the class atmosphere, we will concentrate on the reading materials and have a great efficiency. And also, I prefer to reading in the classroom because, once we have trouble in understanding the reading contents, we can discuss with classmates or ask help from professors. In all, I’d lik e to attend classes regularly.

9.Some students prefer to go to universities or colleges in their own cities or towns. Other students prefer to go to universities or colleges in new cities or towns. Which do you prefer and why?Include details and examples in your explanation.

As far as I am concerned, I prefer to attend university in my own city. First of all, there is a very good university in my city, which is one of the best universities in my country. The university will not only provide me excellent tutors, but also offer me a beautiful campus environment. And also, when I was in middle school, I studied outside my city and used to be away from home. So, I hope I can have more time to get together with my family when I enter the university. In all, I will choose to go to university in my own city.

10.Some students prefer to listen to professors' lecture in classrooms. Others prefer to study outdoors. Which do you prefer and why?Use specific reasons and examples to support your response.

As far as I am concerned, I prefer to listen to professors' lectures in the classroom rather than study outdoors. First of all, since we enjoy quiet environment, which is ideal for learning knowledge, in the class atmosphere, we will be more concentrated and have a greater efficiency. And also, I choose to listen to professors’ lecture in the classroom because, once we have trouble in understanding the contents, we can ask help from professors immediately. In all, I’d like to listen to lecture in classroom. 11.Some students prefer to study in big city. Others prefer to study in a small city. Which do you prefer and why? Include details and examples in your explanation.

As far as I am concerned, I prefer to study in a small city rather than a big one. First of all, I put a premium on my health, and I think there is much more pollution in a big city than a small one. And also, contrary to the big city, a small city provides me a peaceful and quiet life without much emotional stress. The big city is always full of crowds, skyscrapers and heavy traffics, but, in a small city, there may be lush forests and mountains. And finally, there are too many temptations in the big city, such as big shopping malls or amusement parks, which can draw my attention away from study.

12.Some students prefer to study in the classroom. Others prefer to study somewhere else. Where do you think students should study in? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

As far as I am concerned,I prefer to study in the classroom rather than study somewhere else. First of all, since we enjoy quiet environment, which is ideal for learning knowledge, in the class atmosphere, we will be more concentrated and have a greater efficiency. And also, I choose to listen to professor s’ lecture in the classroom because, once we have trouble in understanding the contents, we can ask help from professors immediately. In all, I’d like to study in the classroom instead of somewhere else.

They say there’s evidence that babies as young as five months old can do basic arithmetic, that they can add. Scientists think babies know one plus one equals two and not one. The evidence is indirect because obviously you can’t ask a five-month old baby to add up some numbers for you. So they devised an experiment where, um, in this experiment a baby is shown a doll on a table. Ok, so the baby looks at the doll. Then the researcher lowers a screen in front of the doll, so now the doll is hidden behind the screen. But the baby has already seen the doll and, so, knows it’s there. Well, then the researcher takes a second doll and very obviously places it behind the screen with the first one. Ok, so now you have two dolls behind the screen, right? Well, no, cause what the researcher did was they secretly took away one of the dolls. And then when they raised the screen back up, the baby, well, it expects to see two dolls, right? But there’s only one there!

Describe the famous person you admire most. Explain why you admire this person. Include details and examples to support your response. 如:humorous, open-minded, easy-going,warm-hearted, community-minded, high driven, visionary, knowledgeable… 我们可以用描述的方法去讲这个观点同意转换,如‘he’s a very open-minded person and he’s always flexible to changes. 同时我们还可以用举例的方法来进行扩展,如‘He’s a high-driven guy and he worked so hard on his Toefl test, study almost 24/7.’ Choose an object you like and explain why it is of special value to you. Please include specific examples and details in your explanation. (TOFEL ibt 08.02.24),这道托福口语题属于物品题,物品的题目也是一个常考点,但是准备的面比较广,可能会出成: a type of pet (Longman p.52),a kind of game (Longman p.72),your important gift (Longman p.64),咱们可以从两个角度去答题:对物品本身的简单描述+ 物品的来源或是重要意义,如描述宠物可以说:‘ coz he keeps me company, when I was sad, he was always by my side.’又如描述礼物可以说:‘ The psp was a gift from my Grandpa, it was a credit to my hard work on the SAT test.’ If you could live abroad, where would you go? Explain why you would go there. (Longman p.42)。地方题目也是常考题型,变换方式相对较少,比如有:the city you live (Longman p.31),a city you have always wanted to go (TOFEL ibt 08.02.02),your favorite place when you were a child (TOFEL ibt 08.03.08)等等。 如果说美国,景色可以描述national park, the beauty of nature well preserved,饮食可以说dessert, I’ve got a sweet tooth,如说高雅休闲场所,可以说Broadway, or NBA games,教育可以谈美国的大学,就业机会可以谈美国的500 fortunes. SIP,provides a lot of job and internship opportunities for graduates…

What charactereristics do you think a good teacher should have?(06. 3.3; 07. 11.3考题)

Sample answer: In my view, a good teacher should have different characteristics. First, a good teacher should be faithful and dedicated to the job. If a teacher is faithful to the job, then s/he never cheats and will be impartial(偏向)and students will respect such a teacher. If a teacher is dedicated towards his/her work, then s/he will teach with his/her heart. Another most important characteristic of a good teacher is patience. Teachers should never lose their patience in class when students ask questions repeatedly. A teacher should explain each and every aspect of the topic in the easiest way. Most of all, a good teacher should update his/her knowledge ‘cause further learning can make a good teacher re-discover the beauty of the teaching profession. 2. What are important characteristics you look for in friends?(06. 5.12; 06. 6.24; 07.1.27考题) Sample answer: I think what makes a good friend is someone who is honest, supportive, and has a good sense of humor. I just look for someone who's honest to me no matter what. He should not tell stories behind my back; he should tell me my short-comings at my mouth, but never praises me in front of me. It is a well known saying that "A FRIEND IN NEED IS A FRIEND INDEED." Therefore, a friend should stand by you in the hour of any sort of need. I just think that a good friend won't leave me if I'm in trouble. They can be my friends in sunshine and in shade, care for me even when the times are bad and even more when the times are great. Also, I'd love to spend more time with someone who can make me laugh and is fun to be around. 3. Describe a person that influenced you most.(06. 5.26; 06. 3. 17;06.10.22考题;与06.5.26类似) Sample answer: The person that really influenced me most was Ms. Xing---my college teacher who taught us English literature. Her class was quite different from the other teachers. In her class we were not expected to sit there and listen. We had to get more involved in the class activities, like discussions, comments or debates sometimes. Our creativity and imagination were developed enormously through the active participation. On the other hand, she let us think more about life by sharing her experiences and more importantly, she taught me how to live on my own. So that's why I was greatly influenced. Not only did she give me knowledge, but also she gave me courage and confidence as well.

I found the painting memorable because it reminded me of many things we learned about in history class, such as the Great Depression, Prohibition in the 1920s, and gangsters like Al Capone. I find that period of history very interesting, and the painting seems to contain many elements of that period in one place. response 2 by non-native The most memorable photo I have ever seen is a photo of Mount Everest. The beauty of it was breathtaking. The snow was so pure and the sky was crystal clear. I could not help but wonder what it would be like to be on the top of that mountain and to see everything from up there. Since the first time I laid my eyes on that gorgeous photo, I know, I cannot get it out of my mind or even out of my life. And I have always dreamt of climbing to its very top. I know to conquer it would be a tremendous undertaking that would require bravery and lots of climbing practice. But the mountain is just there, like a calling, and I would like to challenge myself and fight for it. 6—2 有些人一生只从事一份工作,而有些人在不同的人生阶段会从事不同的工作。 response 1 by native I believe that having one career for most of one’s life is better than having different kinds of work at different points in life. 口语第一题(16套) 2009.1.10 Q1 Which of the following features do you think is the most important in friendship: honesty, loyalty or humor? Please include specific examples and details in your explanation. Sample answer I think the most important quality in friendship is loyalty. Loyalty means always being honest to your friends and staying right beside them when they feel down. I'd love to talk about Tom. We've been good friends since we were kids. Once I forgot to bring my lunch to school, Tom immediately took out his lunch and gave it to me. Besides, he is always the first one to point out my weakness directly. Thanks to his straightforwardness, I made quite a progress. I really appreciate his loyalty and treat him as my lifelong friend. 2009.2.14 Q1 Which important skill do you think a student should learn? Please include specific examples and details in your explanation. Sample answer I think students need to learn communication skills. It is impossible to overstate the importance of good communication skills. In today's society we have to work cooperatively with others. A good communicator finds it easier to put forth his ideas clearly. In this way, there will be fewer misunderstandings. In addition, a person with good communication skills is a good mediator and negotiator. He or she can play a valuable role in resolving disputes and enhancing cooperation. This means that a good communicator is often a natural leader. 2009.3.29 Q1 Describe a day that you enjoy the most or is the most special for you. Therefore, society actually benefits fromTV. 3.Explainwhy the woman disagrees with the reasons expressed in the letter. The writer of the letter opposes the universit y?s plan to acquire a new sculpture because the university?s financi al condition is poor and the sculpture is so large that it?ll take up all the green space in front of the campus center. The woman in the conversation thinks the two reasons are totally unconvincing. The woma n says it?s an anony mous donor who pays the bill of the sculpture not the university so t here is no need to worry about the university?s financi al condition. As for the point about the space, the woman thinks Paul, the writer of the letter, always plays soccer with his friends on the lawn where the sculpture will be. She thinks Paul just doesn?t want to move to another place. For him, it?s convenience versus sculpture.
