Here is what life could be like. First of all, transport should be better. Now it takes our spaceships months to get to Mars. By 2100, it only takes us two or three days to get to Mars ty spaceship! Secondly, scientists should be able to develop plants that can be grown on Mars. These plants will produce the food and air that we need. Can these plants produce water for us? There is no answer now. There is a problem to live on Mars. Mars pulls us much less than the earth does. This will be dangerous because we could easily jump too high and fly slowly away into space. To prevent this, humans on Mars have to wear special shoes. Life on Mars will be better than that on the earth. People will have more space. Many people believe robots will do most work, so we have more free time. There will probably be no school on Mars. Students can study, do their homework and take exams in online schools. Each student will also have their own online teacher called “e-teacher”. In some ways, life on Mars may not be better than that on the earth today. Food will not be the same—meals will probably be in the form of pills and will not be as delicious as they are today. Also, space travel will make many people ill. The spaceship will travel fast but the journey to Mars will probably be uncomfortable.( )59. Where will some of us possibly live by the year 2100 according to (根据) the text?A. On Mars.B. Because there will be much delicious food.D. Because all students don't need to do any homework.CWhat is space travel really like for the astronauts? Many astronauts suffer physical problems, even if they are in space for just a few months. More than two-thirds of all astronauts suffer from motion sickness while traveling in space. In space, the body cannot tell up from down. The body sends confusing signals (混淆信号) to the brain, which can result in feeling sick for a few days.In space astronauts' bones get weaker. Being in a weightless environment means that astronauts do not use the muscles (肌肉), so their muscles slowly get weaker. As a result, many astronauts are not able to walk properly for a few days upon their return to Earth. In addition, they are exposed to radiation (辐射) from the sun. This puts them at a higher risk of serious illness. In addition to physical difficulties, astronauts who travel for long periods may also suffer from psychological stress. Long journeys require astronauts to spend more time inside a spaceship. For example, a round-trip journey to Mars could take about three years. Being confined in a small space for such a long period of time is not healthy.Astronauts—especially those who achieved important “firsts”such as Gagarin and Armstrong—are often seen as exciting adventurers. This may be right, but it's also worth remembering the efforts they make to explore our universe.( )63. According to Paragraph 1, what physical problem do astronauts suffer?A. Their hearts send weakened signals to their bodies.B. They may feel sick because of confusing signals.C. They may live shorter after travelling in space.D. Their brains often get less blood and water.( )64. What mainly makes astronauts' muscles slowly get weaker?A. The weightless environment.B. Food in space.C. Radiation from the sun.D. Astronauts' exercise.( )65. What does the underlined word “confined” mean?A. keptB. trainedC. allowedD. served ( )66. What is the writer's main purpose in writing this passage?A. In 1957, the Soviet Union also launched Sputnik-2 with a dog named Laika. Laika was the first animal to orbit (沿轨道运动) the earth. In 1961, Yuri Gagarin became the first to fly a spacecraft when the Soviet Union launched him on V ostok 1. Later that year, Alan Shepard became the first American to fly a spacecraft. John Glenn followed him. John Glenn orbited the earth three times in 1962. In 1963, the United States and the Soviet Union started a competition to see who could put a man on the moon first. In 1969, the United States won when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed on the moon. The United States and the Soviet Union have also put space stations into orbit around the earth. Space travelers use these space stations as both a home and a lab. The United States madeand sent the first reusable (可再度使用的) manned spacecraft , the Space Shuttle, in 1981. Since then, several different shuttles went into space over one hundred times. ( )67. Who was the first astronaut to go into space?A. Neil Armstrong.B. Alan Shepard.C. John Glenn.D. What is the best title for the passage?A. The History of Space travel.B. The Stories of Astronauts.C. The Time of Exploring Space.D. The Names of Spacecrafts.EHave you ever imagined what life will be like in 2060? Firstly, humans can grow body parts themselves. Dr. Ellen Heber-Katz is one of the forty scientists. He says, “People will think it common that sick organs (器官) can be repaired. It's just like the way we fix a car.”Damaged parts will be taken away. Scientists could use human cells (细胞) to grow new organs. New technologies like this will also help people to live longer. Within forty years, most people will be able to live up to one hundred years.Secondly, the scientists have predicted that a machine will be invented to “read” the minds of animals. In 2060, we will be able to “talk” to animals. Scientists say that humans may first “talk” with mammals (哺乳动物) and then other vertebrates (脊椎动物) such as fish. Our houses might also change beyond our imagination. Dr. Susan Greenfield predicts that when you enter the living room, sensors (传感器) will know you. They will turn on the lights. If you talk to the lights, they will change to the color of your choice. But what would be the biggest breakthrough (突破) over the next forty years? A number of scientists believe it would be the discovery of aliens. NASA scientist Chris Mckay says, “We may find aliens in space and talk with them.” He believes marks of alien life may even be found here on Earth.( )70. Which of the following is mentioned in the passage?A. In 2060, humans may be able to communicate with dogs and aliens.B. Most people will be able to live up to two hundred years in forty years.C. Winthrop, therefore, had the exactly10. ____time that the earthquake hit Boston.V. Reading ComprehensionTo call someone bird-brained in English means you think that person is silly or stupid. But will this description soon disappear from use in the light of recent research? It seems the English may have been unfair in associating birds’ brains with stupidity. In an attempt to find out how different creatures see the world, psychologists at Brown University in the USA have been comparing the behavior of birds and humans. One experiment has involved teaching pigeons to recognize letters of the English alphabet. The birds study in “classrooms”, which are boxes equipped with a computer. After about four days of studying a particular letter, the pigeon has to pick out that letter from several displayed on the computer screen. Three male pigeons have learnt to distinguish all twenty-six letters of the alphabet in this way.A computer record of the birds’ four-month study period has shown surprising similarities between the pigeons’and human performance.Pigeons and people find the same letters easy, or hard, to tell apart. For example, 92 percent of the time the pigeons could tell the letter D from the letter Z. But when faced with U and V (often confused by English children), the pigeons were right only 34 per cent of the time. The results of the experiments so far have led psychologists to conclude that pigeons and humans observe things in similar ways. This suggests that there is something fundamental about the recognition process. If scientists could only discover just what this recognition process is, it could be very useful for computer designers. The disadvantage of a present-day computer is that it can only do what a human being has programmed it to do, and the programmer must give the computer precise, logical instructions. Maybe in the future, though, computers will be able to think like human beings.1. The writer suggests that the expression “bird-brained” might be out ofuse soon because it is ________.A. sillyB. impoliteC. unnecessaryD. inappropriate2.
