There are many stories about Sherlock Holmes, who was a famous detective in Britain at the end of the 19th century. Many people believed in him and asked him for help when they were in trouble or in danger. He usually found the answer before the police. Well known for his expert advice, he was able to help a number of people with their personal affairs. He is still remembered by the people now.
“How did you find the answer?” he asked. Holmes claimed (声称 ) that his methods were easy. “Elementary ( 非常简单地 ), my dear Watson,” he answered.
Holmes lived at 221B, Baker Street, in London. Today, this house is photographed by tourists.Holmes’s methods were based on those of a colleague ( 同事 ).The detective became popular, and ConanDoyle wrote in his next story that Holmes would die. So Holmes was killed by an enemy:he was pushed into a waterfall. But the public protested( 抗议 ) and Conan Doyle had to revive (使复活 ) his hero. The return of Holmes was written in 1905; and told how Holmes had escaped from the waterfall.

Conan Doyle(1859~1930) practiced medicine and created the amateur(业余的 )detective Sherlock Holmes. In the stories Holmes was never employed by the police. Was Holmes a real person? Not exactly. The famous detective did not exist,except in fiction(幻想 ). He was created by Conan Doyle, but Dr.Joseph Bell, one of Conan Doyle’s professors at the medical University, inspired the character of Holmes and shared the qualities with the famous detective. People all over the world recognize the face, the hat, and pipe of the 19th century detective Holmes.Holmes had his own methods, which were more advanced than those of the police of his time. From the Color of a man’s face, Holmes deduced (推理 ) that he had lived abroad for many years.From a man’s clothes, he could tell if he lived in the town or in the country. Holmes’ friend, Dr. Watson, could never understand how the detective reached his conclusions.
