On Hemingway's Feminist Consciousness from Cat in the Rain 1. Criticism of Hemingway’ s works’ smearingIt is known that Hemingway has an important position in the literary history, his contribution to American literature is an indisputable fact.However, the image of Hemingway's female critics has been aroused heated arguments, and sometimes his attitudes to women are the focus in the critic world.A considerable number of critics thinks that Hemingway was a male chauvinist, which leads to the result that his work is more of a "tough guy" image, and a kind of discrimination against women. After the rise of feminism, Hemingway's female characters suffered more blame than praise. Some activists have not been satisfied with the so-called macho and dismissed it as "misogyny complex".Some critics tend to excavate materials from the private life of Ernest Hemingway, interpreting their work, analyzing the figures. This seems quite natural to come to the conclusion of Hemingway’s being hatred of women. He has re peatedly accused his mother as "she is a bitch," "That bitch!" For a woman giving his life and a love, this is indeed an insult to be added. He has not a happy marriage relationship. Hemingway had attacked Fitzgerald’s wife Zelda that he was jealous Fitzgerald’s talents to interfere his writing process. This is also listed as an example of his hostility toward women. Won him the Nobel Prize in Literature, "The Old Man and the Sea" is obviously a work concerning about the world of men - the book actually has no female role. His male characters owned "grace under pressure" and is a"tough guy", while female characters often seem to be as a foil or the opposite existence. Therefore, Edmund Wilson ,as the representative of part of the critics, pointed out the people in Hemingway’s works as "male chauvinist pigs."2.Hemingway’s women image tend to feministRobert. Keluser and other critics took Albright. Anshly, Maria and other female characters as the basis that: Hemingway is a feminist writer. His work has a strongfeminist tendencies. Many female characters should not have been cast aside, but should be sympathetic to, even admirable. This view has been affirmation for the first time to the repeatedly ignored or disparaged female characters of Hemingway's and certainly refreshes, and it has its unique feature. In his novels, there is not lack of feminist consciousness of Hemingway, and several of them were launched from the female consciousness. Hemingway also shows his own feelings in shaping their women characters on different occasions at different times.3.The Rebellious Image of Women in Hemingway’s Work—Cat in the Rain“Cat in the Rain” talks about a story of a woman who stays in a hotel with her husband, when she looks outside of the window to lighten her dull, she sees a cat in the rain. The woman shows her sympathy to that cat and desires to rescue it. She expresses her thought to her husband who was reading on the bed, actually he reads from the beginning to the end without considering his wife's idea. Then she plans to catch the cat herself, at that time, the owner of the hotel meets the woman, she said her idea to the boss after the cat was run away . Ant the end of the story, the woman was complain about the cat to her husband, a servant send a big tortoiseshell cat different from the cat in the rain.There were only near 2000 words in this novel, and it exists through the American wife's perspective. The American wife and her husband's relationship actually is not very harmony. The man is always reading on the bed without response to his wife warmly, which leads her to look out side the window. The man is apathy to his wife as they live in that age, which the woman have to obey to the man totally. The whole society is male-dominated, but the women at that time can't bear them and they just want to be independent from the men, the women in “Cat in the Rain” is a represent of the individual women. Hemingway expresses his ideas of women protest the patriarchal traditions.There are only 7 main image in this short novel, the American couple, the cat, the rain, the servant and the hotel owner. In western culture, the cat has a close relationship of metaphor with women. The cat is an important clue that runs through this novel, from the American wife finds the cat in the rain to she express she want to get that cat, then the hotel owner sends a a big tortoiseshell cat to her, the cat alsobecomes a motive to promote the plot develop."Cat" in English is regarded as "evil-minded women", therefore the cat in this novel can be seen as the woman, in the meantime, the cat itself is gentle, adorable, and needs to be protected. The cat in the rain are just like the women live in the shadow of male-dominated society. Their similarity is being lonely, adrift, insecurity, they also can't control their own destine. This means the women have to be controled by the men, their desires are also be repressed. We can see the American wife in this novel is very gentle, but her husband's cold attitude makes her need something to accompany her, at that time, the cat in the rain attracts her attention, she consider the single, helpless cat as her self, so she wants to protect it, look after it or gain it. The cat's bitter experience and unfortune date certainly resonated with the American wife herself's destiny, so she offers the thought of protect the cat, which indicates that the woman herself want to be protected. And the cat lies under the chair to shelter from the rain means the women want to escape the bondage of traditional social position of women, and they also want to persue more rights and find their own position in the society. "'And I want to eat at a table with my own silver and I want candles. And I want it to be spring and I want to brush my hair out in front of a mirror and I want a kitty and I want some new clothes.' " the American wife said to her husband, "'Anyway, I want a cat,' she said, 'I want a cat. I want a cat now. If I can't have long hair or any fun I can have a cat.' " but what she get from her husband is just "shut up"from her husband. The American wife want to change her situation, appearance, hair-style, and the relationship with her husband. This also shows her modern feminism consciousness appeared.4.Causes of the Female ImageAs an outstanding representative of "Lost Generation", Hemingway's distinguished position in literary world in the United States and his contribution to the development of American literature has been recorded in history. Hemingway’s image of women is the fragment and the silhouette of the course of whole Western civilization, which takes male power as the axis. It is also an exact reproduction of literary works. Hemingway’s contradictory views on women are formed under the influence of cultural background and life experiences in that era, and his views on women has played a huge impact on his life and art.Hemingway lived in the end of 19th century and mid-20th century, this particularturn of the old and new era of cultural ethos and historical events played a very important role in Hemingway's values, world views and concepts of the formation of women. As thousands of years of patriarchal culture, heritage, people's consciousness is invisibly influenced by the patriarchal culture, Hemingway is a writer with a strong sense of male subject, The independence of women he advocated is permitted within the scope of men, and doesn’t damage the main location. He truly works on women's living conditions, emotional needs, values, and expression. He shows his understanding and support to what the women required including female equality, freedom, liberation, requiring the same right to education, employment, voting rights and this requirements reflect the need of human civilization. Although the patriarchal culture has been on the wane, but several thousand years of cultural domination and influence, everyone of patriarchal culture has "collective unconscious". Hemingway could not completely give up men stand. Though he supported women's liberation movement and enjoy the independent, brave woman, he was afraid of the result women liberation movement developed into, such as the formation of female supremacy, female domination male. so he thinks the right women requested should not threaten the dignity and the authority of men,. It is in this time under the influence of cultural background, Hemingway’s views of women have become so complex and contradictory.Hemingway was living in a time there is a decline of Western patriarchal culture, but a rise of female consciousness, feminist movement of the twentieth century. As a result of two world wars, the traditional values have been destructed. People confronted a world which Nietzsche predicted an era of "value" evaluation. The so-called "Greenwich Village thought" swept in the United States in 1920s .This thought influenced the lives of men and women profoundly. Many poor writers and artists lived in Greenwich Village, living a unique life, forming a "Greenwich Village thought", to resist the traditional "business - Protestant Christian morality." Hemingway's life circumstances are being wrapped in women: his mother, his four wives, and his lovers. Those women are more or less influenced by" Greenwich Village thought," they have their own personality and temperament. The rising feminist movement, the practice of female life have an impact on the writer, Ernest Hemingway's thoughts, so he clearly recognize in that new era the trend women in the pursuit of self irreversibly. The Analysis of Cat in the RainThis is a story happening in a hotel. An American couple went to Italy for a holiday and lived in a hotel. In a rainy afternoon, the American wife who was standing at the window looking out found a cat crouching under one of the dripping green tables. So she wanted to get that kitty, however, her husband was indifferent about her behavior. But she still insisted on her thought, when searched that kitty, the American wife found it had disappeared and then came back room with disappointment. However, the thought of getting that kitty was more and more intense after she came back room. And she expressed this thought to her husband. Much to my surprise, her husband was not only indifferent, but also began to get impatient with her behavior. In the end, the padrone asked the maid to bring a cat for her.Reading the essay, we could be easy to find the wording of whole essay was simple and the style of essay was sententious. Meanwhile, we can find it used a third-person to narrate the story, and using the different words such as two Americans, they, the American wife, she, American girl showed the changed of author’s thought to women.And there were four main characters—American couple,the padrone and the maid. The story was told in the order in which it occurred. The first part of the essay narrated the background of the story—it occurred in a rainy day, the leading characters were living a hotel to spend their holiday in Italy. Then on the next part of the essay narrate storyline detailedly. Author narrated the different attitudes toward the American wife between her husband and the padrone, and reveal the social problem of gender inequality by comparing her husband’s indifference with the padrone’s kind. And the end with the padrone giving the wife a cat leave a space for reader to imagine.In short, this is a good essay needing reader spend enough energy to study.。

Consequently, a Hemingway story functions on two levels. The surface realistic story is a way to understand a deeper and broader truth about the nature of the human condition. In Hemingway’s words:I always try to write on the principle of the iceberg. There is seven-eighths of it underneath for every part that shows. Anything you know, you can eliminate and it only strengthens your iceberg. The first section of the novel describes the background to create a deep gloomy atmosphere: The American lady found a cat in the rain＂Outside right under their window a cat was crouched under one of the dripping green tables. The cat was trying to make herself so compact that she would not be dripped on.＂Seeing the situation, she felt symphthy for this cat sudenly, and she wanted to catch it and put it in her shield. After telling her decision to her husband about going outside and catch the cat,the husband was just unconcerned .The husband maybe cared for her wife,but that’s just not enough. He didn’t take any action in fact. There may be two reasons why the woman wang to get and protect the cat.Firstly,she cares for and love herself,to some degree,to protect the cat may just mean to protect herself or her dignity. She rescued herself by rescuing the cat..Secondly,the action is the manifest of her ability. She had thirst for the protection of the cat to prove that she could dominate something in her way which could give her a sense of achievement,.She eagered to change a lot of thing her haircut,outlook and some detail things, what’ most important, her status in the marriage. Very opposite to her husband,the owner of the hotel was so different that the woman was into him.The hotel-keeper had sent her with the maid holding the umbrella over her when she wanted to get out,not her husband who did this..As the author told us, the wife liked him. “She liked the deadly serious way he received any complaints. She liked his dignity. She liked the way he wanted to serve her. She liked the way he felt about being a hotel- keeper. What does the cat represent in Hemingway’s “Cat in the Rain”“Cat in the Rain” is a very short and tight novel of Ernest Hemingway. Different from Hemingway’s other novels; the leading character of “Cat in the Rain”is a tenellous woman. In the story, a couple of American stays in an Italian hotel in a rainy day. The wife catches a sight of a poor cat crouching under a table from the rain outside. She wants to bring it in. However when she comes to the yard only finds the cat is missing. After returning to the room a maid sends her another cat. We can see that the homeless cat must have several further implications. From my point of view, the poor cat in the novel “Cat in the Rain”symbols the freedom, independence and equity which the wife eagerly desires under the pressure of traditional women status and the patriarchal society.First of all, the poor cat in the novel represents freedom which the wife strives for. Although the poor cat in the rain is homeless and pitiful, it can choose its own existence. Obviously, the wife is not as unbound as this cat. She lives in the nice and pleasant room but she has no right to get what she really wants. In the novel what she says is, “…I want candles. And I want it to be spring and I want to brunch my hair…I want a kitty and I want some new clothes.” But how does her husband responds her? “Shut up and get something to read!” is the only comfort she can get. Here we can see that under the superiority of the male, the wife can not escape from this kind of restraint which will constrain her to pursue what she really wants. So when the wife catches a sight of a poor cat crouching under atable, her desire to freedom is aroused. However, when she comes to the yard and only finds the cat is missing, she was suddenly disappointed. The missing of the cat also reveals the impossibility for women to get freedom in a vulnerable position.Secondly, the pitiful kitty in the rain represents independent and shit notion is also revealed by the comparison between the wild cat and the wife. We all know that a wild cat has very strong survival skills and it can survive the very difficult environment independently. Then how about the wife? When she runs out the hotel without any rain gear, it is the hotel keeper that sends the maid to bring her an umbrella in case the wife gets wet. From that detail we can see that women still needs the protection of man. Another good illustration is the husband never leaves his bed and the padrone has his own desk. Bed, the most important object in the bedroom, to some degree, represents a kind of superiority, such as a desk in the hotel hall. The wife, who has nothing in a sense, has to rely on those men and of course it is not the independent which the wife desires. What’s more, the third male character in the short story is the pass-by. This character in the rain wears a rubber cape which can protect him from getting wet. Compared with the wife who needs others to bring her an umbrella, the pass-by is much more independent. From this tiny detail we can draw a conclusion that female cannot protect herself by her own. So the wife needs to become independent and the homeless cat in the rain maybe her only sustenance.The last but not the least, the homeless cat represents the equity. Concerning theconversations between the wife and the husband, we can see that the husband is in the superior position. The response of the husband, compared with his wife’s emotional and long dialogues, is shorter but stronger. Take the husband’s reaction to the wife a t the beginning, what he says is, “I’ll get it”, “Don’t get wet” or “shut up and get something to read” at the final. All of these dialogues are seemed more like an order than a suggestion. However, the conversation between the wife and the maid is much more harmonious. The maid is a nother female figure in “Cat in the Rain” The twice appearances of her are under the order of the hotel keeper. The first time is the hotel keeper sends her to look after the wife, and the second is the hotel keeper sends her to bring the domestic cat to the wife. Such kinds of plots tell us the low status of the maid, and develop the theme effectively once again. The low social status, dominated by male and without self-awareness is revealed. The reasons why I think the cat represents equity is that the cat is the only thing the wife wants to occupy and if she can bring the cat in she would achieve equal rights and status in a sense. At the end of the story, the hotel keeper sends the maid to bring the domestic cat to the wife; I think the wife will not take in the domestic cat because it represents sympathy of male.All in all, through the comparison between male and female, wild cat and dom estic cat in “Cat in the Rain”, the unconscious struggle of choosing freedom and indepe ndence in the wife’s heart is showed deeply. However, freedom, independent and equity are not mentioned directly in this short story but are represented by the homeless, pitiful wild cat. I think in our lives, we also have something which wedesire but cannot gain. Summary:
The story “Cat in the Rain” written by Ernest Hemingway is about a couple that stay in Italy. The woman in the story sees a cat abandoned outside in the rain under a table and wants to get him and bring him into her hotel room. When she finally convinces her husband to let her go out and get him, it is gone. She returns to the room with out a cat and her husband is still propped up on a pillow reading his book. He insists she lay down and read a book, when she starts talking about how much she wants a cat, how she wants it to be sitting in her lap as she brushes her hair. A short while later one of the hotel workers who helped her try to find the cat the first time had discovered his presence and bought him to her.
Critique:
The story “Cat in the Rain” talks about a cat stuck outside in the rain, but I don’t think that this is what Hemingway meant when he wrote this story. I like how Hemingway started the story off with describing the setting, where the two Americans were and how they were the only ones stopping in to this particular hotel. It gives the reader something to picture right off the bat. I think that Hemingway could have described the characters in more detail to get a better understanding of them. Also I think the in-depth description of the hotel wasn’t necessary I would of liked to see the description put in to the characters more. I really liked the way Hemingway’s character the American Woman acted because it felt very real to something in real life. The way Hemingway portrayed the woman at first was more along the lines of a nagging wife, but when she goes to the window to see the cat her persona changes, I liked this because it made me get into her head and see how she was feeling Hemingway started in a unique way because I very rarely see a story start like this, and he pulled it off very well. The description of the location and setting pulled me right into the story, I liked this because it kept me interested and wanting to keep reading. I think the title that was given to the wife as the “American Wife” lacks individuality and has no special meaning, signifying that she is just a mere American Woman and nothing else. I think that the title Hemingway chose was to portray that the wife felt that she was condoned to George her husband and that he never really paid much attention to her. This lack of attention makes her feel that she does not have much freedom to express herself and keeps much of her feelings inside. She definitely feels the restraint that George has put on her, and in order to please him, she attempts to make herself compact just like the cat.
I think this is why Hemingway makes it seem that she is so attached and drawn to helping the cat out of the rain.。
