Teacher’s Book for Unit 7Unit 7 Write a market research reportMotivatingAbout the unitConsumers are at the heart of any business plan. Before launching a new product or modifying existing products, companies need to make sure that their products fit consumers’ needs. Market research is critical because it is an effective way to learn about consumer needs and preferences. The results of market research, which are usually summarised in a report, are then used to help business owners make more informed decisions about the company’s product strategies. This unit mainly focuses on writing a market research report. “Inputting” will help Ss learn the content and the necessary words and expressions concerning the market research, as well as how to structure and write the report effectively. Then, they will complete the production task in “Outputting”. Finally, “Extending” will help Ss gain further information about the market situation after the launch of the new product, and better understand the wide use of data in businesses. After studying this unit, Ss will be able to write a market research report and understand the importance of conducting both qualitative and quantitative market research.Teaching objectivesUpon completion of this unit, the T is expected to enable Ss to:●list the words and expressions concerning market research (Listening &Reading: Form)●note down and analyse customers’ opinions about the products (Listening &Reading: Content)●describe the structure of a market research report (Structuring)●list three ways of doing market research (Listening & Reading: Content)●report the process and findings of market research (Outputting)Teaching suggestionsA production-oriented approach is suggested here. By adopting this approach, the T needs to make clear the unit setting, the production task and the learning objectivesin “Motivating”. With the content, language and structure learned in “Inputting”, the T can help Ss get prepared for the production task in “Outputting”. “Extending” is the final stage where a follow-up listening and reading are carried out.Sections TipsMotivating Period 1 (Warming-up)• Present the scenario of communication to Ss.(Trying-out)• Ask Ss to try out the communicative task.• Help Ss realise their gap to complete the task and arouse their interest in learning.(Taking aim)• Explain the learning objectives and the output task.• Make sure Ss can distinguish between the communication and the language objectives.• Make sure Ss are clear about the type and content of the output task.Inputting Periods 1-3(Listening)• Play the audio for Ss to listen to for the first time and to do Task 1 to get topics of the street interview; check the answers and offer help to Ss if necessary.• Play the audio for Ss to listen to and to finish Task 2 to get further information about the customer’s opinions; check answers and offer help to Ss if necessary.• Explain the Language Points (The T may explain the language points before the first listening).• Explain the Cultural Point and the Business Point.• Lead Ss to summarise the language that can be used to complete the output task.(Reading)• Guide Ss to read and understand the passage by finishing the two tasks of “Content” (Task 2 might be finished before Task 1 if necessary) to gather information from a questionnaire; check answers and provide assistance when necessary.• Explain the Language Points, the Cultural Point and the Business Pointand any part of the passage that might be necessary for Ss.• Guide Ss to finish the three tasks of “Form” (some of the tasks such as Task 3 might also be finished flexibly while the language is being explained); check answers and provide assistance when necessary. • Lead Ss to note down more information of the customers’ preferences from the questionnaire and collect more language structures that are useful for the output task.(Structuring)• Explain the structure of a market research report.• Guide Ss to grasp the structure of a market research report by finishing the Task; check answers and provide assistance when necessary.• Make sure Ss have grasped the structure of a market research report before moving to the next part of the unit.Outputting Period 4 • Describe the output task so that Ss are clear about each step of the task and relevant requirements of each step.• Guide Ss to finish the output task step by step and carry out the self-assessment.• Assess Ss’ performance by working with them together (construct the assessment criteria with Ss in advance and make a timely assessment inside or outside the class according to the time available).• Provide assistance when necessary.Extending (outside class) (Listening & Reading)• Assign Ss to finish the tasks and provide the channel through which Ss can check answers; provide assistance when necessary.• If time permits, the T can also guide Ss to finish the tasks inside the class and roughly follow the procedures of “Listening” and “Reading” in “Inputting”.Inputting2.1 ListeningLanguage focus1.How often do you consume soft drinks?consume: v. to drink 喝;消费e.g. One should always consume clean water.2.You use natural spring water as the main ingredient.ingredient: n. any of the qualities of which sth is made成分;原料e.g. The basic ingredient of the mixture is flour.3.I guess it is healthier and more organic.organic: a.(of food, farming methods, etc) produced or practised withoutartificial fertilisers or pesticides有机的;不使用化肥的e.g. This garden is used to plant organic vegetables.4.But as I am a bit overweight, my doctor advised me to have drinks with lesssugar.overweight: a. heavier than is usual or allowed; fat(人)体重超常的;肥胖的e.g. Overweight people are more likely to develop diabetes and heart diseases.5.Well, it would be the best if you can add some minerals, which will providepeople with more energy.1)mineral: n.substance that is not vegetable or animal, esp one with aconstant chemical composition which is found naturally in the earth(某些食物中的)矿物质e.g. This area is famous for its rich mineral salts.2)provide sb with: to make sth available for sb to use by giving, lending orsupplying it 为某人提供……e.g. The company will provide you with all of these supplies.Reference answersTask 1☑type☑drinking frequency☐place to buy☑brand☐monthly budget☑flavour☐size☑expectationTask 21. As we are planning to expand our product range, we have carried out market research to analyse the feasibility of developing a new functional drink.AimThe aim of this research is to identify consumers’ opinions and expectations on soft drinks so as our relevant departments can develop new product strategies accordingly. MethodologyThis research was carried out by conducting a street interview and putting a questionnaire to 15,000 consumers across 18 major cities in the city.ResultsThe chief finding is that consumers nowadays care for their health and well-being. When we interviewed several consumers about the factor they care about most while choosing soft drinks, the vast majority of them gave top priority to “Health Claims”. This is in line with the result we got from the questionnaire. Furthermore, other factors such as “Function” and “Ingredient” are much more important than “Packaging”, “Flavor” and “Brand Name”. Consumers want “health-enhancing” soft drinks with natural and organic ingredients. This result is largely attributed to the global health trend in food and beverages.Another distinct finding is that in order to maintain a “cleaner” lifestyle, consumers are taking active steps to change their drinking habits. As we have found out from the street interview, a lot of consumers have various health problems. And excessive sugar is responsible for several diseases such as obesity, diabetes and heart disease. Therefore, the biggest step consumers take is cutting their sugar intake, followed by cutting their caffeine, artificial ingredients and gluten intake. Those ingredients are all believed to pose a threat to people’s health. Our last finding is based on the consumer response we have received from the questionnaire, and this is that ingredients such as vitamin C, Omega 3, vitamin D and other natural ingredients with digestive benefits are becoming more sought after by consumers. Conclusions and RecommendationsFrom the above analysis, the market for a new functional drink is huge as consumers give top priority to health while making their soft drinks purchasing decisions. Therefore, it is highly recommended that the R&D Department develop a new product with functions that can improve people’s well-being. Healthy and natural ingredients should replace traditional artificial ones, while at the same time, maintaining a great flavor. Besides, the Marketing Department should attach more importance to highlighting the health claims of the new product and developing strategies of effective targeting at health-conscious consumers.ExtendingReference answers4.1 Listening1.4%2.second3.sugar4.the packaging5.formula4.2 Reading1.T a major priority for businesses2.T being collected right around the clock3. According to last quarter’s sales report, our market share was 23% of the overall soft drinks market in South China, while our three main rivals, Bestbev, Sunday Dew, and Caradi, had 32%, 28% and 15% respectively. In comparison, this quarter’s figure is very encouraging. Our sales have risen by 4%. In contrast, Bestbev has lost 1%, and Sunday Dew has also lost about 3%. Now we occupy the second market position. The change in this quarter’s market situation is due to the fact that we have successfully launched “Refresher”, a new functional drink. We have reduced its sugar content to cater to people’s health concerns. We have also changed the packaging to offer drinks in different sizes. Most importantly, with a special formula from our R&D team, “Refresher” not only refreshes people’s mind, but also increases people’s energy. It can help people recover from activity more quickly and exercise longer. Therefore, it is also popular among sports lovers and has become extremely popular as the summer sports season is coming. It is through our joint efforts that we have managed to stay competitive in a tough market. Thank you!。

Reading Comprehension (30%) (30 minutes) PartDirections: There are 4 passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions orunfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You shoulddecide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single linethrough the center.Passage 1Questions 56 to 60 are based on the following passage.Research shows that the average high school student will study four hours per week for anymajor test. The outcome of this four hours of study varies from an A to an F, which means that inhigh school grades are strongly determined by intelligence since everyone studies the sameamount of time. But college is different. Most of the students are highly intelligent and each has plenty oftime for self-study. To score high on any test, a college student has to work hard and, probably more importantly, know how to use his or her time most efficiently. The problem is that your study habits formed in high school may make you unable to study well in college because you have never experienced what it takes to perform at the college level. That is why the freshman year is the hardest year for all college students.Based on my extensive observation of student performances on college tests, I recommendthe following study time per test: 6 hours per week for an A, 4 hours for a B, 3.5 hours for a C, 2.5 hours for a D and 0 hours for an F. An hour of study is defined as studying for 45 minutes and a break of 15 minutes. Ten hours of continuous study without a break is defined as one hour of study. The brain does not process and store information the way students prefer studying. Occasionally, some succeed by studying at the last minute, but they are exceptions to the rule.Research also suggests that the slowest 10 percent of the students may need 5 to 6 times asmuch time to learn the same material as the fastest 10 percent. Each person is very likely to have strengths and weaknesses. Overcoming your weakness increases your strength.56.According to the writer, the reason why high school students get different test results is that________.A.some students have good study habits while others do notB.some students work harder than the rest of themC.their intelligence varies from person to personD.their teachers teach them in different ways57.The freshman year is considered the hardest for all college students because ________.A.they feel worried among so many intelligent peopleB.they are too anxious to score high on all testsC.they don't know yet how to study at the college levelD.they have to take a lot of courses at the same time58.In order to study efficiently, the writer suggests that one should ________.A.spend 10% of his time on the most difficult subjectsB.set aside 1/4 of the studying time for breakC.take a one-hour rest after 10 hours of studyD.study 6 hours and then take a good rest59.What takes the fastest students to learn in one hour may take the slowest students ________.A.3 hours2 hours B.4 hours C.5 hoursD.probablythat the writer most is concluded can written, passage way From 60.the this is it be________.a high school teacher A.a college student B.a high school studentC.D.a college teacherPassage 2Questions 61 to 65 are based on the following passage.A soap is a popular television drama serial(连续剧)about the daily lives and problems of a group of people. The stories make viewers laugh, cry and wait to see what happens next. Thus, viewers would come. For some soap fans, it is like the end of the world when “Another World”ends after 35-year run. That's because soaps these days can't satisfy devoted viewers. Altogether, daily viewers have decreased from 69.6 million to 48.8 million since 1991. For instance, ABC's “All My Children”drew 8.3 million in 1991, now 4.5 million. One reason is that soaps are difficult in an era marked by various electronic games. Girls who used to watch daytime dramas with their mothers now go to their rooms where they can watch cable on their own TV set, or play video games, or wander on the Internet. Besides, the audience was too old, at 47 on average. TV stations have to get the right viewers because women, from 18 to 49, have the income to buy the things pushed by advertisers. It's gotten to the point where it's financially driven. But networks aren't about to drop soaps, as long as advertisers like them so much. It's very efficient and cheap to spread heavily a number of ads. On the other hand, there's not much to replace them. Talk and other shows have a bad record, and they don't reach a concentrated female audience. The channels believe that they will attract younger viewers, the next generation of soap watchers, by starring new characters and putting in fresh blood into plot(情节)lines. There's no secret. People want a good story.61.What is NOT true about “Another World”?A.It is a TV series.B.It has been on for 35 years.C.Some viewers feel sorry for the end of their favorite TV series.D.Its producers have been threatened for stopping it.62.Soaps have lost _______ daily viewers since 1991.A.less than 20,00,00020,000,000 B.over 20,000,000 C.over 2,000,000D.The soap industry has to work harder to attract the audience for the following reasons except63.that ________.advertisers and faithful viewers need it A.other TV shows are much better and going to beat the soap B.there are various means of enjoyment C.D.the young generation don't like soaps64.What does the author mean by “putting in fresh blood into the plot lines”?A.To add violence to the story.B.To create attractive events which make up the story.C.To add some new words to the story.D.To make the story look real.65.The main idea of the passage is about ________.A.the present condition and prospect of soapsB.soap's decline in viewersC.profits brought by soaps through advertisementsD.a brief history of soaps' developmentPassage 3Questions 66 to 70 are based on the following passage. My grandson, Daniel, and I have always been very close. When Daniel's father remarriedafter a divorce, Daniel, who was eleven, and his little sister, Kristie, came to live with us. My husband and I were more than happy to have kids in the house again.Things were going along just fine until the diabetes( 糖尿病) I've lived with most of myadult life started affecting my eyes. And then more seriously, my kidney(肾), Then everything seemed to fall apart.Three times a week, I had to go to the hospital to be hooked up to a dialysis machine (透析机.). I was living, but I couldn't really call it a life -- it was an existence. I had no energy. Idragged myself through my daily chores (家庭杂事) and slept as much as I could, My sense of humor seemed to disappear.Daniel, seventeen by then, was really affected by the change in me. He tried as hard as hecould to make me laugh, to bring back the grandma who loved to clown around(开玩笑) with him. Even in my sorry state, Daniel could still bring a smile to my face. But things were not improving. After a year on dialysis, My condition was deteriorating(恶化) and the doctors felt that if I didn't receive a kidney transplant within six months, I would surely die. Ne one told Daniel this, but he knew -- he said all he had to do was rock after me, To top it off (更糟糕的是), as my condition worsened, there was a chance I would become too weak to have the transplant surgery at all, and then there would be nothing they could do for me. So we started the tense and desperate wait for a kidney.I was adamant(坚决的) that I didn't want a kidney from anyone I knew. I would wait until an appropriate kidney became available, or I would literally die waiting. But Daniel had other plans. The time that he took me to my dialysis appointments, he did a little secret research on his own. Then he announced his intentions to me.Grandma, I'm giving you one of my kidneys. I'm young and I'm healthy... He paused. Hecould see I wasn't at all happy with his offer. He continued, almost in whisper, And most of all, I couldn't stand it if you weren't around. His face wore an expression of appeal mixed with determination. He can be as stubborn as a mule(像骡子一样固执) once he decides on something-- but I've been told many times that I can out-stubborn any mule!We argued. I couldn't let him do it. We both knew that if he gave up his kidney, he'd alsogive up his life's dream: to play football. That boy ate, drank and slept football. It was all he ever talked about. And he was good, too. Daniel was co-captain and star defensive tackle( 防守阻截队员) of his high school team; he expected to apply for a football scholarship and was lookingforward to playing college football. He just loved the sport. How can I let you throw away the thing that means the most to you? I pleaded with him.Grandma, he said softly, compared to your life, football means nothing to me.'After that, I couldn't argue anymore. So we agreed to see if he was a good donor(~;~4,~-) match, and then we'd discuss it further. When the tests came back, they showed Daniel was aperfect match. That was it. I knew I wasn't going to win that argument, so we scheduled the transplant. Both surgeries went smoothly. As soon as I came out of the anesthesia(麻醉), I could tell things were different. I felt great! The nurses in the intensive care unit had to keep telling me to lie back and be quiet--- I wasn't supposed to be that lively! I was afraid to go to sleep, for fear Iwould break the spell (破除魔法) and wake up the way I had been before. But the good feelingdidn't go away and I spent the evening joking and laughing with anyone who would listen. It wasso wonderful to feel alive again !The next day, they moved me out of ICU and onto the floor where Daniel wasrecuperating( 复原) three doors away. His grandfather helped him walk down to see me as soonas I was moved into my room. When we saw each other, we didn't know what to say. Holding hands, we just sat there and looked at each other for a long time, overwhelmed by the deep feelingof love that connected us.Finally, he spoke. Was it worthwhile, Grandma?I laughed a little ruefully(懊悔). It was for me! But was it for you'? I asked him. He noddedand smiled at me. I've got my grandma back.”And I have my life back.
