A Brief Introduction to the Computer
A computer is just a machine, but a computer system consists of two main elements: the machine and programs. Like a person, a computer system is composed of two parts: the bone—hardware and the soul—software. The central idea of a computing system is that input is processed into output. Input is the data which is entered into the computer, and output is the result of processing done by the computer, usually printed out or displayed on the screen. Let us get closer to the computer from the basic components. When talking about computers, such image as Pic 2.1 will appear in our mind: a display screen known as the basic output device, a keyboard usually together with a mouse as the basic input device, and a cabinet known as a machine box.

2.2 System Buses
Physically, a bus is a set of wires. The components of the computer are connected to the buses. To send information from one component to another, the source component outputs data onto the bus. The destination component then inputs this data from the bus. As the complexity of a computer system increases, it becomes more efficient (in terms of minimizing connections) at using buses rather than direct connections between every pair of devices. Buses use less space on a circuit board and require less power than a large number of direct connections. They also require fewer pins on the chip or chips that comprise the CPU. 从物理上来说,总线就是一组导线。计算机的部件就是连在总线上的。为 了将信息从一个部件传到另一个部件,源部件先将数据输出到总线上,然 后目标部件再从总线上接受这些数据。随着计算机系统复杂性的不断增长, 使用总线比每个设备对之间直接连接要有效得多(就减少连接数量而言)。 与大量的直接连接相比,总线使用较少的电路板空间,耗能更少,并且在 芯片或组成CPU的芯片组上需要较少的引脚。

A mouse is a pointing device designed to be gripped by one hand. It has a detection device (usually a ball) on the bottom that enables the user to control the motion of an on-screen pointer, or cursor, by moving the mouse on a flat surface. As the device moves across the surface, the cursor moves across the screen. To select items or choose commands on the screen, the user presses a button on the mouse.
Although microprocessors are still technically considered to be hardware, portions of their function are also associated with computer software. I. Introduction Computer hardware is the equipment involved in the function of a computer and consists of the components that can be physically handled. The function of these components is typically divided into three main categories: input, output, and storage. Components in these categories connect to microprocessors, specifically, the computer’s central processing unit (CPU), the electronic circuitry that provides the computational ability and control of the computer, via wires or circuitry called a bus.
Software, on the other hand, is the set of instructions a computer uses to manipulate data, such as a word-processing program or a video game. These programs are usually stored and transferred via the computer’s hardware to and from the CPU. Software also governs how the hardware is utilized; for example, how information is retrieved from a storage device. The interaction between the input and output hardware is controlled by software called the Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) software.
