Keeping my fingers crossed!Along with the reading, we also learned how to write instructions and explain the rules for games and sports. We had to break it down step-by-step, using words like "first", "next", "then", and "finally." I wrote out instructions for how to play kickball, which is a really fun game that combines elements of baseball and soccer. You have to be able to kick and run the bases. The key is listening carefully for when the pitcher says "kick!"For one of our projects, we got into small groups and had to invent our own new game or sport. My group created this thing called "Blazeball" which was kind of like baseball meets basketball. Instead of a bat, you use your hands to bounce this ball and then try to run around bases before the other team gets it in their basket. We had a blast coming up with the rules and even got to demonstrate it for the class. I'm not sure it will ever become a real sport, but it was an awesome experience using our creativity and teamwork skills.Towards the end, we learned about adjectives to describe things related to sports and games. Words like "competitive", "active", "athletic", and "energetic." We talked about what it means to be a good sport and have sportsmanlike conduct. Our teacher told us wonderful stories of star athletes who showedgreat sportsmanship, even after losing important games. It inspired me to be a gracious winner and loser whenever I play.Finally, we did presentations on our favorite athlete or sports hero. There were lots of kids who chose famous basketball and soccer players. A couple friends did baseball stars like Mookie Betts. I decided to research and present on the Williams sisters, Venus and Serena. They are two of the greatest tennis players ever and have accomplished so much, all while carrying themselves with class and being great role models. I loved learning about their inspiring story.Well, that's pretty much everything we covered in that amazing Module 9 on sports and games. I had an absolute blast and learned so much! Not only did I gain important English skills, but it also got me excited about staying active and discovering new sports and activities to try. This module was sooooo much fun and I learned a ton.The unit was all about sports and games. On the first page, there were pictures of kids playing soccer, basketball, tennis, and swimming. I looked at the photos and tried to name all the sports I recognized. Soccer was easy since I play on a team. I knew tennis too from watching it on TV sometimes. But there were some new sports I didn't know the names for in English yet.Our teacher started by teaching us the vocabulary words for different sports and activities. We learned words like badminton, gymnastics, martial arts, and skateboarding. I thought some of those words were pretty tricky to say at first! We played games in class to practice identifying the sports. My favorite was the charades game where we acted out the sports and our teammates had to guess.Next we learned phrases and sentences about doing different activities. We'd see a picture, like a girl kicking a soccer ball, and have to say "She is playing soccer." Or if it showed a boy swinging a baseball bat, we'd say "He is batting in baseball."Practice made it easier to remember which verb to use with each sport.The grammar focus for this unit was on the verb "can" and using it to talk about abilities. For example, we learned to say things like "I can juggle" or "My brother can't ride a bike yet." We did fun activites where we'd go around the room stating what we or our family members could do related to sports and games. It was interesting to learn what talents my classmates had!There were also some fun reading passages about famous athletes like Serena Williams, Michael Phelps, and Simone Biles. We learned their biographies and all the amazing accomplishments they achieved through hard work and dedication. Their stories inspired me to keep practicing soccer and maybe one day I could be a star player too!For the writing portion, we wrote descriptions of our favorite games or sports. We had to use vocabulary words from the unit along with the grammar concepts we learned. I wrote about how I love playing soccer because it's a team sport where you can run, kick, pass, and sometimes even score exciting goals. Getting to illustrate our writing pieces with drawings made it even more fun.Towards the end of the module, we did some really neat hands-on project work too. We learned about traditional games from different cultures around the world. Some classmates showed how to play marbles or jacks. Others demonstrated games with spinning tops or jumping ropes. I taught everyone my favorite clapping game from Ghana called Amo. It was awesome getting to experience little pieces of other cultures that way.The very last activity for this unit was an optionalshow-and-tell day. Students could bring in any kind of sports equipment and present it to the class. I brought my soccer ball and shoes, but other kids had things like badminton rackets, yoga mats, roller blades, and more. Seeing and learning about all the different athletics was so cool!That's a quick overview of everything we did in Unit 1 Module 9 on sports and games. I hope you can see why it was my favorite unit so far this year. Sports are so much fun and I love playing them with my friends. We have P.E. class at school a few times a week and that's my favorite part of the day!One of my favorite sports is soccer. I've been playing soccer since I was really little. My dad was my first coach when I was on a kiddie team. Soccer is a great sport because you get to run around a lot and kick the ball. It's even more fun when you can score a goal! My position is forward so I get to try and score goals for my team. Sometimes the games can get pretty competitive but we always have a good time either way.Another sport I really like is basketball. Basketball is awesome because it involves a lot of running, jumping, shooting, and passing. The best part is making a basket - that feels so good when the ball swishes through the net! My friends and I often play pick-up games at the park near my house. We're not very tall yet so we have to work extra hard, but that makes it even more exciting when we make a shot.Swimming is probably my absolute favorite sport though. I'm on a local swim team and we have practices a few times a week before our swim meets. Swim meets are really fun because you get to race against kids from other teams and try to get a faster time. My friend Jessica is amazing at tennis so maybe I'll take a tennis class sometime. Baseball seems fun too but I haven't played much besides hitting some pitches at the batting cages.No matter what sport it is, I just love being active and playing games and sports. It's a great way to get exercise and have a good time with your friends and teammates. My parents always tell me it's important to be active instead of just sitting around all day. Plus you can learn skills like teamwork, hand-eye coordination, effort, and sportsmanship through playing sports.Of course, you still have to work hard on your schoolwork and can't just play sports all day long. But fitting in an hour or two of a sporty activity makes my day so much better. You get that feeling of accomplishment when you put in effort and work up a sweat. And the anticipation of the next game or practice is exciting!I'm really lucky that my school and town have lots of opportunities to play different sports. My P.E. teachers and coaches are all really nice too and keep things fun while we're learning. Having good teachers makes you want to work hard and keep improving.One of the best parts about being on a sports team is making new friends who have the same interests as you. I'm so excited to tell you all about my favorite books and stories from Module 9 of our English textbook this semester. Reading is one of my most favorite things to do. I love getting lost in amazing adventures and imagining myself right there with the characters!One of the first stories we read was The Fox and the Grapes. This is an old fable with such a funny moral about not beingjealous of things you can't have. There was this sly fox who really wanted to eat some delicious grapes hanging high up on a vine. He tried and tried to reach them by jumping up, but they were just too high. Instead of admitting the grapes were out of his reach, the fox walks away saying "Those grapes were probably sour anyway!" Haha, I love how silly the fox is. My teacher says fables like this one teach us important life lessons through funny animal stories.Another awesome book was The Happy Prince. It's a beautiful fairy tale by Oscar Wilde all about a golden statue of a prince covered in jewels. The prince feels bad for the poor people in the city who have so little. So a little swallow bird becomes friends with the statue and together they give away all the prince's riches to the needy folks in town. Even though the swallow has to stay through the winter and dies from the cold, her last gift is to take out the prince's lead heart and let it fall where a poor family can use the metal to get money. It's such a moving story about kindness and sacrifice. We all had tears in our eyes after that one!But my absolute favorite book from the unit was Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. That book is just wondrously weird and wild! Alice falls down a rabbit hole and discovers this bizarrefantasy world full of the craziest characters. There's the White Rabbit who is always rushing around panicking about being late. Then she meets this super rude Caterpillar smoking a hookah who doesn't make any sense. My favorite has to be the Mad Hatter and March Hare at the crazy tea party! They're just so random and funny. Or how about when Alice cries a huge pool of tears and has to swim through it? That whole book is like a wonderful dream that makes you go "Huh?!" but you don't want it to end.I also really enjoyed the poems in the unit, especially "The Owl and the Pussycat" by Edward Lear. It's basically a love story between an owl and a cat who get married and sail away to their "runcible" honeymoon, whatever that means! The rhymes and silly words make it so fun to read out loud. I'll never forget lines like "They dined on mince and slices of quince, which they ate with a runcible spoon." What is a runcible spoon?! It just sparks your imagination with its nonsense.Of course, no English unit on stories would be complete without some good old nursery rhymes and songs. I loved belting out classics like "Hey Diddle Diddle" and "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star." Something about those silly, singsongy verses really sticks in your head. My friends and I still randomlyrecite "The cat and the fiddle, the cow jumped over the moon!" from time to time and then burst out laughing. Those rhymes are so goofy but that's why they're perfect for little kids.Reading all these tales, fables, poems, and songs was an absolute blast. They inspired me to use my creativity and make up my own wacky stories during free writing time. I would take bits and pieces of plots, characters, and ideas from the stories we read and mush them all together into something totally new and nonsensical. Like maybe a poem about the March Hare throwing a big tea party but Humpty Dumpty falls off the wall and into the tea cups! Or a fable where a grumpy troll has to help free a golden prince statue from a spinning web spun by Miss Muffet's spider. I just let my imagination run wild and didn't worry about making sense. That's the fun of it!Looking back on Module 9, I'm so grateful my teacher introduced me to all these amazing books and tales. They opened up my mind to appreciating different forms of literature, from silly nursery rhymes to symbolic fables to trippy fantasy worlds. Most importantly, they sparked my passion for reading, writing, and creative storytelling. I may only be in third grade but I feel like I've already discovered the magic and power of words. I can't wait to dive into the next book and visit strange new places,meet madcap new characters, and go on unbelievable adventures through the portals of my mind. Keep feeding me new stories, please!
