I was a single parent of four small children. Money was always tight.

It was Christmas, and although there wasn’t money for a lot of gifts,

we planned to celebrate with parties and friends, drives downtown to see Christmas lights, special dinners, and by decorating our home. But the big excitement for the kids was the fun of Christmas shopping at the mall.

I have saved $120 for presents to be shared by all five of us.

The big day arrived and we started out early. I gave each of the four kids a twenty-dollar bill and reminded them to look for gifts about four dollars each.

Back in the car driving home, everyone was in high Christmas spirits, but my younger daughter, Ginger, was unusually quiet. I noticed she had only one small, flat bag with her. I could see enough through the plastic bag to tell that she had bought candy bars--- fifty-cent candy bars! What did she do with that twenty-dollar bill I gave her I wanted to yell at her, but I didn’t say anything until we got home. I called her into my bedroom and asked her what she had done with the money. This is what she told me:

“I was looking around, thinking of what to buy when I saw the little cards on one of the Salvation Army’s ‘Giving Trees’. One of the cards for a little girl, four year old, and all she wanted for Christmas was a doll with clothes and a hairbrush. In the summer of 1885, nine-year-old Joseph Meister was very ill.

He had been attacked by a sick dog that had rabies(狂犬病), a very dangerous disease. His doctor tried to help him, but there was no cure for rabies at that time. The doctor told Joseph’s parents that perhaps there was one man who could save Joseph’s life. His name was Louis Pasteur.

When Pasteur was young, he was especially interested in medicine, so he spent many hours every day with the chemist who lived in his small town. At that time, the chemist had to make all the medicines himself. Young Louis enjoyed watching the chemist as he worked and listening to him help the customers who came to him each day. Pasteur decided that one day he would help people, too.

As a school boy, Pasteur worked slowly and carefully. At first, his teachers thought that young Louis might be a slow learner. Through elementary school, high school, and college , Pasteur worked the same way. In fact, he was not a slow learner, but a very intelligent young man. He became a college professor and scientist, and he continued to work very carefully.

Pasteur was studying about the germs that cause rabies when Joseph Meister became ill. In fact, Pasteur believed that he had a cure for rabies, but he never gave it to a person before. At first, Pasteur was afraid to treat Joseph, but the doctor said the child was dying. Pasteur gave Joseph an inoculation(接种) or shot everyday for ten days. Slowly, the child became better.

A woman named Emily renewing her driver’s licens e at the country clerk’s office was asked by the woman recorder to state her occupation. She hesitated, uncertain how to classify herself.

“What I mean is ,”explained the recorder, “do you have a job or are you just a…”

“Of course I have a job,” Emily got in,“I’m a mother.”

“We don’t list ‘mother’ as an occupation… ‘Housewife’ covers it, ”said the recorder emphatically(强调地).

I forgot all about her story until one day I found myself in the same situation, this time at our own Town Hall. The clerk was obviously a career woman, confident, efficient, and possessed of a high sounding title like “Official Interrogator(讯问员)” or “Town Registrar(登记员)”.“What is your occupation” she asked.

What made me say it, I do not know. The words simply came out suddenly and u nexpectedly. “I’m a research associate in the field of Child Development and Human Relations”. The clerk paused, ballpoint pen frozen in midair, and looked up as though she had not heard right. “Might I ask”, said the clerk with new interest, “just what y ou do in your field

I heard myself reply coolly and calmly, “I have a continuing programme of research, in the laboratory and in the field. I’m working for my master, and already have four credits. Of course, the job is one of the most demanding in the humanities, and I often work 14 hours a day, and sometimes 24 hours. The job is more challenging than most careers and the reward is more one of satisfaction than just money.”

There was an increasing note of respect in the clerk’s voice as she completed the form, stood up, and personally showed me to the door.

As I drove into our driveway, proud of my “new” career, I was greeted by my lab assistants who are ages 13,7 and I could heard our new experimental model, a six-month-old baby, in the child-development model ,testing out a new vocal(发声)pattern.

I felt triumphant(胜利的)! I had scored a beat on bureaucracy(官僚)! And I had gone on the official records as someone more glorious and necessary to mankind than “just another mother ”.

69. What does the woman recorde r mean by saying “Housewife covers it”

A. “Housewife” is more important than “Mother”.

B. “Mother” is just a housewife.

C. “Mother” refers to a jobless woman.

Boxing Day

Boxing Day is on December 26th, the day after Christmas, and is celebrated in Great Britain and in most areas settled by the English (the USA is an exception), including Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

Despite its name, Boxing Day has nothing to do with boxing. While the exact origin of the holiday are obscure, it is likely that Boxing Day began in England during the Middle Ages.

Some historians say the holiday developed because servants were required to work on Christmas Day, but took the following day off. As the servants prepared to leave to visit their families, their employers would present them with gift boxes.

As time went by, Boxing Day gift-giving expanded to include those who had provided a service during the previous year. This tradition survives today as people give presents to mail carriers, doormen, porter, and others who have helped them.

Today Boxing Day is spent with family and friends with lots of food and sharing of friendship and love. Government buildings and small businesses are closed but the malls are open—shopping is a popular Boxing Day activity, and the malls are usually filled with people taking advantage of after-Christmas bargains.

Besides these activities, many business, organizations and families try to keep the traditional spirits of Boxing Day alive by Contributing their time, services and money to supporting food banks(救济食品发放中心), proving gifts for the poor, or helping an individual family that is in need.

73. Find a phrase in the passage t o match with the description “us ing

a particular situation to do or ge t what you want”.

A proverb from ancient China was widely spread in the West but I had never heard it when I was in China. “If you want to be happy for a few hours, go to get drunk; if you want the happiness to last three years, get married; if you want a lifetime happiness, take up gardening.” The reason for the last opinion is this: Gardening is not only useful, but also helps you identify yourself with nature, and thus brings you new joy each day besides improving your health.

A research of a US university that I have read gives a definition of happiness as what makes a person feel comfortably pleased. To put it specially, happiness is an active state of mind where one thinks one’s life is meaningful, satisfactory and comfortable. This should be something lasting rather than transitory.

Lots of people regard the happiness to be at leisure(悠闲). But according to a study, it is not a person with plenty of leisure but one at work that feels happy, especially those busy with work having little time for leisure. Happiness does not spell gains one is after but a desire to harvest what one is seeking for. People often do not cherish what they already have but yearn for what they can’t.

Happiness is a game balancing between two ends—what one has and what one wishes for. . one’s dream and the possibility to realize it. The study comes to this conclusion A happy man is one who aims high but never forgets his actual situation, one who meets challenges that tap his ability and potentiality, one who is proud of his achievements and the recognition given on to him. He has self-respect and self-confidence, treasures his identity to accept assistance. He knows he is able to endure suffering and frustrations. He is sensible enough to get fun from daily chores. He is a man capable of love and passion.

作文:

Quite a number of students admit that their usual way to kill time in holiday is playing computer games. However, people look at computer games in different ways.

Those who are in favor of them say the interesting games enable us to improve our hand-eye coordination and make friends with other computer game players. On the other hand, people against computer games hold the view that the games are full of blood and violence, which is bad for people’s mental health. In addition, computer games are so fun that people can get addicted to them. They play or think about them all the time, lost interest in school, and stop socializing with other people in the real world.

I think playing computer games can be fun and helpful, but too much computer game playing will do harm to us. So when we enjoy the games, we need to make sure to leave plenty of time to play outside with others, be a helpful part of family and keep fit and active.

大一期末考试英语试题

01 Passage 1 Hypnotism (催眠术) is very old. Thousands of years ago people started to use it in Egypt. The use of hypnotism has grown very much since that time. Today, doctors and scientists are in almost every country hypnotize people to help them with their problems. What is hypnotism, and how does it work? Many people think that a hypnotist puts people to sleep. Then he makes the hypnotized people do strange things. This is not what a hypnotist does. Hypnotism is really just a way to relax the mind and body. What are some of the uses of hypnotism? We go to a hypnotist because w e have a problem. The problem makes us unhappy. The hypnotist asks us to think hard about something and relax. When we are relaxed, t he hypnotist gives us some ideas to help us with our problems. Hypnotism can help people to remember things. The police sometimes ask hypnotists to help them. For example, a man sees an accident. He forgets the license number of the car he sees. If he is hypnotized he may remember it. The police can then find the car and catch the driver. People who are hypnotized can also make mistakes or say something that isn't true. People remember what they think they saw. That may not be what really happened. The police don't hypnotize people who do something wrong. Why not? People who are hypnotized may say something that isn't true. A person who has done something bad has a good reason to say something that isn't true. 1. Hypnotist helps people by ____. [A] putting them to sleep [B] helping them to get relaxed [C] offering his ideas about their problems [D] making them forget their problems 2. When hypnotized, some people may say something that is not true, because ____. According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE?____ [A] Hypnotism is very different form what it used to be. [B] When a person is hypnotized, his body gets relaxed, while his mind works hard. [C] Hypnotism is much more widely used today than it was thousands of years ago. [D] When hypnotized, a person will do something strange. 4. The passage mainly talks about ____. [A] how hypnotism works [B] the development of hypnotism [C] the use of hypnotism [D] the wonder of hypnotism

To stress the rebuilding of personal relationships. Passage Two American dramas and sitcoms would have been candidates for prime time several years ago. But those programs -though some remain popular -increasingly occupy fringe times slots on foreign networks. Instead, a growing number of shows produced by local broadcasters are on the air at the best times. The shift counters longstanding assumptions that TV shows produced in the United States would continue to overshadow locally produced shows from Singapore to Sicily. The changes are coming at a time when the influence of the United States on international affairs has annoyed friends and foes alike, and some people are expressing relief that at least on television American culture is no longer quite the force it once was. “There has always been a concern that the image of the world would be shaped too much by American culture,” said Dr. Jo Groebek, director general of the European Institu te for the Media, a non-profit group. Given the choice, he adds, foreign viewers often prefer homegrown shows that better reflect local tastes, cultures and historical events. Unlike in the United States, commercial broadcasting in most regions of the world -including Asia, Europe, and a lesser extent Latin America, which has a long history of commercial TV -is a relatively recent development. A majority of broadcasters in many countries were either state-owned or state-subsidized for much of the last century. Governments began to relax their control in the 1980’s by privatizing national broadcasters and granting licenses to dozens of new commercial networks. The rise of cable and satellite pay-television increased the spectrum of channels. Relatively inexperienced and often financed on a shoestring, these new commercial stations needed hours of programming fast. The cheapest and easiest way to fill airtime was to buy shows from American studios, and the bidding wars for popular shows were fierce. The big American studios took advantage of that demand by raising prices and forcing foreign broadcasters to buy less popular programs if they wanted access to the best-selling shows and movies. “The studio priced themselves out of prime time,” said Harry Evans Sloan, chairman of SBS Broadcasting, a Pan-European broadcaster. Mr. Sloan estimates that over the last decade, the price of American programs has increased fivefold even as the international ratings for these shows have declined. American broadcasters are still the biggest buyers of American-made television shows, accounting for 90% of the $25 billion in 2001 sales. But international sales which totaled $2.5 billion last year often make the difference between a profit and a loss on show. As the pace of foreign sales slows -the market is now growing at 5% a year, down from the double-digit growth of the 1990’s -studio executives are rethinking production costs. 6. Which of the following best characterizes the image embodied in American shows? A. Self-contradictory B. Prejudice-free C. Culture-loaded D. Audience-targeted 7. The intervention of governments in the 1980’s resulted in __________ . A. the patenting of domination shows and movies B. the emergence of new commercial networks C. the promotion of cable and satellite pay-television D. the intense competition coming from the outside 8. The phrase “on a shoestring” (Para. 6) most probably means __________. A. in need of capital B. after a fashion C. on second thoughts D. in the interests of themselves 9. The main reason why American dramas and sitcoms are driven out of prime time is that ____. A. they lose competitiveness B. they are not market-oriented C. they are too much priced D. they fall short of audience expectations 10. American studio producers will give thought to production costs __________. A. if they have no access to popular shows B. because their endeavors come to no avail C. since bidding wars are no longer fierce D. as international sales pace slows down Passage Three How shops can exploit people's herd mentality to increase sales 1. A TRIP to the supermarket may not seem like an exercise in psychological warfare—but it is. Shopkeepers know that filling a store with the aroma of freshly baked bread makes people feel hungry and persuades them to buy more food than they had intended. Stocking the most expensive products at eye level makes them sell faster than cheaper but less visible competitors. Now researchers are investigating how “swarm intelligence” (th at is,how ants, bees or any social animal, including humans, behave in a crowd) can be used to influence what people buy. 2. At a recent conference on the simulation of adaptive behaviour in Rome,Zeeshan-ul-hassan Usmani,a computer scientist from the Florida Institute of Technology, described a new way to increase impulse buying using this phenomenon. Supermarkets already encourage shoppers to buy things they did not realise they wanted: for instance,by placing everyday items such as milk and eggs at the back of the store, forcing shoppers to walk past other tempting goods to reach them. Mr Usmani and Ronaldo Menezes, also of the Florida Institute of Technology, set out to enhance this tendency to buy more by playing on the herd instinct. The idea is that, if a certain product is seen to be popular, shoppers are likely to choose it too. The challenge is to keep customers informed about what others are buying. 3. Enter smart-cart technology. In Mr Usmani's supermarket every product has a radio frequency identification tag, a sort of barcode that uses radio waves to transmit information, and every trolley has a scanner that reads this information and relays it to a central computer. As a customer walks past a shelf of goods, a screen on the shelf tells him how many people currently in the shop have chosen that particular product. If the number is high, he is more likely to select it too.
