Often people do not understand why they feel sick on a regular basis and why they develop symptoms that worsen over time. We hardly know that inside our house, various toxins(毒素) are present at any time.

In recent years, scientists have discovered that there are various houseplants that keep our household air clean and pure. Not only do these plants absorb pollutants, they also remove harmful gases from the air and help fight pollution.

Spider Plant: A beautiful houseplant with long grassy leaves, the spider plant is also a rapidly growing plant. This plant is great at removing harmful gases. For best effect, it should be kept in the kitchen or near the fireplace as these are the places where CO accumulates a lot.

English Ivy:Despite its poisonous leaves, English Ivy is a very popular houseplant and best suitable for patients with asthma, a medical condition that causes difficulties in breathing. Easy to grow in bright sunlight, the plant has the amazing ability to remove various chemicals. So it keeps the inside air clean. With its ground-covering quality, the plant often serves well in landscaping.

Golden Pothos: Also known as Devil’s Ivy or Silver Vine, the Golden Pothos is a highly invasive plant. With evergreen leaves and progressive stems, this plant easily takes over its surrounding area. Yet it is also very efficient in removing indoor pollutants. But, care should be taken as the plant is harmful to small animals and even kids.

Aloe Vera: We all know that aloe vera is present in many skin care products.

Does money buy happiness? Not! Ah, but would a little more money make us a little happier? Many of us smirk(傻笑,假笑) and nod. There is, we believe, some connection between financial fitness and emotional demands. Three in four American college students—nearly double the 1970 proportion—now consider it “very important” or “essential” that they become “very well off financially”. Money matters.

But a surprising fact of life is that in countries where nearly everyone can afford life’s necessities, increasing wealth matters surprisingly little. The connection between income and happiness is “surprisingly weak,” observed University of Michigan researcher Ronald Inglehart in one 16-nation study of 170,000 people. Once comfortable, more money provides fewer returns. The second piece of pie, or the second $100,000, never tastes as good as the first. Even lottery winners and the Forbes’ 100 wealthiest Americans surveyed by University of Illinois psychologist Ed Diener have expressed only slightly greater happiness than the average American. Making it big brings temporary joy. But in the long run wealth is like health: its complete absence can create suffering, but having it doesn’t guarantee happiness. Happiness seems less a matter of getting what we want than of wanting what we have.

Has our happiness, however, floated upward with the rising economic tide? Are we happier today than in 1940s, when two out of five homes lacked a shower or tub? Actually, we are not. Since 1957, the number of Americans who say they are “very happy” has declined from 35 to 32 percent. Meanwhile, the divorce rate has dou bled, the teen suicide rate has increased nearly three times, the violent crime rate has gone up nearly four times, and depression has mushroomed. Economic growth has provided no boost to human morale. When it comes to psychological well being, it is not the economy.

I call this soaring wealth and shrinking spirit “the American paradox(充满矛盾的事).” More than ever, we have big houses and broken homes, high incomes and low confidence, secured rights and reduced civility. We are good at making a living but often fail at making a life. We celebrate our prosperity(繁荣) but long for a purpose. We treasure our freedoms but long for connection. In an age of plenty, we

feel spiritual hunger.

60. Which of the following statements best expresses the author’s view?

A. The more money we earn, the happier we would be.

B. The more money we earn, the less returns we have.

C. In the long run, happiness grows with economy.

D. In the long run, money cannot guarantee happiness.

61. “The second $100,000 never tastes as good as the first” because _____.

A. happiness brought by it is less than that from the first $100,000

B. profit brought by it is less than that from the first $100,000

C. it is not so fresh as the first $100,000

D. it is not so important as the first $100,000

62. According to the passage, people do well in making a living but don’t _____.

A. know how to enjoy life

B. know how to spend money

C. have any primary aim

D. keep in touch with other people

63. The things that happened after 1957 are given to show that _____.

A. family problems become more and more serious

B. people’s spiritual demands cannot be met by wealth

C. young people are not happy about their life

D. social crimes have increased significantly

The following is a brief and selective history of the evolution of the usage of ink from the Middle Ages to the present day.

Northern England, 1339, a monastery(修道院): A scholarly man sits quietly in front of his desk, attending to a seemingly endless task. He has a copy of the Bible in front of him, handwritten by some other monk(修道士), that he is reproducing page by page. It will be months if not years before he is done, until every page is perfectly copied, and then the cycle will begin anew. It will be another century before the invention of the printing press(印刷机) gives monks vast blocks of time they never had before.

London, 1590, the Globe Theater: It’s been a century and a half now since a man named Johannes Guttenberg built the first printing press, and the world of printing has come a long way. Nearly 200 million books have been printed, and among them is work after work by a playwright named William Shakespeare with a theater next to the Thames River.

Boston, 1850, a factory: Another few hundred years have passed, and the world has undergone a revolutionary change—the Industrial Revolution. The weaver sits at her loom(织布机) late into the evening, the smoke from the oil lamps blackening the walls. For her six days or 70 hours of work this week, she will earn approximately $3.25(about $84 in today’s money).

New York, 1909, the street: In America’s most populous city, there are now eleven daily newspapers. It is the best of times to own a newspaper in New York. Rivers could run black with all the ink in use. The newspapers fight fierce battles between each other, sending their paperboys out like foot soldiers.

Sydney, current day, a living room: The blogger sits before a laptop, tapping out his blog article for the day. His canvas is the Web, his audience digital, and it’s rare for him to furnish physical copies of his work. There’s simply no need for it. Sure, the blogger has a few unopened ink bottles in his closet that may be of use some day.

In the mid 1990s, people started doing business on the Internet. At that time,

there were two kinds of companies. First, there were traditional companies which

sold things in stores. Then, there were Internet companies which didn’t have stores,

and they only sold things over the Net.

Many traditi onal companies didn’t want to lose any business. Quickly, they

websites like https://www.360docs.net/doc/303984302.html, are easy to remember. These companies also have lots of

E

There are so many great classic literary works turning on the desire for revenge. Alexandre Dumas’ The Count of Monte Christo, from 1844, is definitely one of the greatest literary adventures among these tales, indeed William Thackeray was so enthralled he began reading at six one morning and never stopped till eleven at night.

It describes the fall, imprisonment, escape, rise and vengeance of Edmond Dantès. The whole story begins with a young French sea captain who seems to have been given all the things life can grant. He is successful and is set to marry the beautiful Mercédès.

But Dantès’ fortune turns out to be his misfortune. There are those who envy his success. Danglars hates that Dantès is a success as a captain; Mondego loves Mercédès, which makes him jealous of Dantès; and Caderousse hates Dantès for getting the luck in life he feels he has been denied.

The men have Dantès framed for betraying the country. Falsely accused of treason(叛国), Dantès is arrested on his wedding day and imprisoned in the island fortress of Chateau d’If. In prison, he meets a priest, Faria, who passes on his education to Dantès. Faria also tells him of a fabulous treasure on the isla nd which is called Monte Christo. When the priest dies, he seizes a chance to escape and makes his way to the island to claim the money.

Free, wealthy and now unrecognizable to most, Dantès is well placed to take his revenge on the men who condemned him to prison. He punishes them with varying degrees of severity. The pitiful Caderousse is a struggling innkeeper; he gets off lightly because he regrets his behavior and helps Dantès. But the other two fare less well.

Mondego, married to Mercédès, has continued with his disloyal ways and the life he has led helps Dantès to bring him down. The greedy Danglars, who so envied Dantès’ success, is ruined financially when Dantès plays on his desire for gold. What Danglars wanted most from life – money – also proves to be his ruin.

And yet revenge so often hurts more than guilt, and this is the case in Dumas’ novel. Dantès’ actions damage the innocent too. Dumas’ novel is therefore more than just a page turner, a thrilling ride. It is a story about the limits of human justice. Dumas seems to argue that only fate can decide proper punishment for the evil.

72. What does the novel The Count of Monte Christo focus on?

A. Dantès’ desire for success an d wealth.

B. Dantès’ misfortune after he is sent to prison.

C. Dantès’ revenge on the men who caused his imprisonment.

D. Dantès’ adventure after he escapes from the prison

73. By saying “ But the other two fare less well”, the author means t hat the other two ______.

A. don’t deserve all they suffer

B. are less satisfied with their lives

C. should be paid less

D. are punished in a more cruel way

74. From the article, we can conclude that the author thinks that Dumas___________.

A. didn’t completely belie ve in revenge

B. believed Dantès achieved

human justice

C. aimed to use the novel to present the great ups and downs of life

D. believed Dantès had every right to ruin those who caused him to b e put in prison.

75. What may be the best title of the passage?

A. Dantès and his enemies.

B. A tale of revenge.

C. Fate and revenge.

D. Proper punishment

Wengen in Switzerland Do you ever wonder how the world was before cars were invented? The village called Wengen might just help you realize your dreams. Cars have been banned from this area for close to 100 years, and everything looks like it was taken right out of Heidi. The locals have kept their Swiss culture undamaged. It's designed to keep snow from piling up on top of houses. These houses are the symbol of the area but there aren't many of them left anymore. Eze in France France in itself is pretty, but its most attractive village is Eze. This community seems to be frozen in time. This village is the perfect melting pot of cultures because of its closeness to Nice.

A I have had all kinds of interesting neighbors since the early days of my life. When I was a baby I would stand in my wooden crib(婴儿床) and watch the world go by through the window. Some neighbors watched me watching the world go by with by big, wondering eyes and found me very interesting. They used to call me “the beauty at the window”. The early neighbors I could remember were from the second house I lived in. Peter and Paul were twins. We went to play school together although they were a year older than me. I well remember the Alsatian they had which ran into me when I was invited to their fifth birthday party. Needless to say, I was well-known for my loud screams after the party. But they said the pet was scared of my screams and didn’t appear until the party was over. Peter and Paul were the first boys who encouraged me to climb the gate. I could never tell the difference between boy and girl behaviors—I just did what I thought was fun. Not only did I have a great time performing that first climb, I also got my skirts dirty, and was criticized by my mother. The Japanese neighbors I had living in this same house were my favorite, as they introduced me to sea-salt baked shrimps (烤虾) which were so crisp that you could eat the shrimp totally. They gave me some seaweed for my birthday. Thankfully, no other member in my family enjoyed the seaweed as I did. Perhaps what my mother used to joke to me was true, that I was picked up out of the dustbin that belonged to a Japanese home. Maybe sometimes it is difficult to find good neighbors in this society. But all it takes is a spark(火花) to get a fire going. I have decided to be that spark wherever I live and pass love on to my neighbors. 21. We can guess "the Alsatian" in the twin brothers' home is ___________. A. a small child B. an interesting toy C. a dog D. a bicycle 22. From the passage we can know that the author___________. A. enjoyed the Japanese neighbors' cooking style most B. had difficulty getting on with the twin brothers' family C. was described as interesting when playing with boys D. had many neighbors that worked in restaurants 23. What can we infer from the passage? A. The author often moved to other places. B. Peter and Paul liked to play tricks on others. C. The neighbors the author had were good at cooking. D. The author had a good relationship with her neighbors. B Below are four ads on the website.Artful Experience It’s an artful experience even if you’re artistically challenged.
