Unit 4TrainA train is a connected series of vehicles for rail transport that move along a track to transport cargo or passengers from one place to another. The track usually consists of two rails, but might also be a monorail or maglev guideway.Propulsion for the train is provided by a separate locomotive. Most modern trains are powered by diesel locomotives, although historically (from the early 19th century to the mid-20th century) the steam locomotive was the dominant form of locomotive power. There are various types of train designed for particular purposes. A train can consist of one or more locomotives and attached railroad cars.A passenger train may consist of one or several locomotives, and one or more coaches. Passenger trains travel between stations, at which passengers may board and disembark. In most cases, passenger trains operate on a fixed schedule and have superior track occupancy rights over freight trains.Oversight of a passenger train is the responsibility of the conductor. He or she is usually assisted by other crew members, such as service attendants or porters. During the heyday of North American passenger rail travel, long distance trains carried two conductors: the aforementioned train conductor, and a Pullman conductor, the latter being in charge of sleeping car personnel. Some passenger trains, both long distance and short distanced, may use bi-level (double-decker) cars to carry more passengers per train. Car design and the general safety of passenger trains have dramatically evolved over time, making travel by rail remarkably safe.Freight trains comprise wagons , though some parcel and mail trains are more like passenger trains. Much of the world's freight is transported by train, and in the United States the rail system is used more for transporting freight than passengers. Under the right circumstances, transporting freight by train is highly economic, and also more energy efficient than transporting freight byroad. Rail freight is most economic when freight is being carried in bulk and over long distances, but is less suited to short distances and small loads.

Sociologists have long recognized that businesses of less than 200 individuals can operate through the free flow of information among the members. Once their size exceeds this figure, however, some kind of hierarchical structure or line management system is necessary to prevent total chaos resulting from failures of communication. Imposing structures of this kind has its costs: information can only flow along certain channels because only certain individuals contact each other regularly; moreover, the lack of personalized contacts means that individuals lack that sense of personal commitment that makes the world of small groups go round. Favours will only be done when there is a clear quid pro quo, an immediate return to the giver, rather than being a matter of communal obligation. Large organizations are less flexible.

HOW TO RUN EFFECTIVE MEETINGS
The meeting leader or facilitator is responsible for setting the meeting tone, keeping the discussion on track, andmaking sure everyone has a fair chance of being heard. The leader or facilitator should also summarize relevantpoints and tie things together when the discussion jumps around between interrelated topics.Filling the role of leader or facilitator is no easy task, especiallywhen personal agendas clash ormisunderstandings occur. Although a well-planned meeting will significantly reduce surprises and meetingconfusion, there is no guarantee everything will run smoothly, even with the best planning. Here are somesuggested guidelines on how to run effective meetings:
Location and Time
Select a meeting place that best matches the participant's needs, the objective, and the meeting structure. When planning where to meet, give consideration to size, comfort, accessibility, adequate parking, room acoustics, equipment needs, etc. Choosing a meeting time dependson the availability of participants and meeting facilities. The anticipated length of the meeting shouldalso be a factor in deciding when to schedule the meeting.
Participant:
Who needs to attend this meeting to accomplish the purpose?
Structure:
How should the meeting be organized to best accomplish the purpose? Some techniques may include:guest speakers, videos, brainstorming sessions, panel sessions, discussion groups, demonstrations, etc.Whatever technique is selected, it should have the greatest impact on the participants to attain themeeting objective.
Planning does take a certain amount of time, however the burden of planning does not have to fall fully on theleader’s shoulders. The leader is responsible for seeing that the planning gets done, not necessarily for doing it.Every step can be delegated. If you are responsible for conducting the meeting and you chose to delegate thetasks of organizing the meeting, make sure you are familiar with the agenda, objectives, and any relevantbackground information before the meeting begins.
How to organize and run effective meetings
Good meetings aren't accidents - they are the result of good planning. The timeyou spend before will result in major benefits later by efficiently using themeeting time, accomplishing objectives, and avoiding the need for follow-upmeetings. When deciding to hold a meeting, you should also decide who shouldattend and what is the purpose of the meeting. To help in planning meetings, below is a checklist of major elements essential for meeting effectiveness.
Confirmation:
Ifit is a first meeting or if the meeting is on a new day or time, individually contact all participants aweek to three days before the meeting day. Contact can be as simple as sending everyone a friendlyreminder through office e-mail, phone calls, or a post card reminder through the mail. For regularlyscheduled meetings, choose a location and meeting time and try not to change it.
There are a variety of agenda styles but essentially they should contain atleast the following elements:titeting), time (e.g. 8:00-10:00 a.m.),date,location, discussion items, and names of persons responsible for coveringeach item. Some people prefer to include time allotments for each agendaitem to improve meeting effectiveness (e.g. review minutes 13:05-13:15 p.m.).
Purpose:
Plan meetings with purpose. Define the purpose or objective of the meeting (e.g.to reach consensus onhow volunteer leaders should allocate their time).
议程对于成功的实现有三种方式:1)明确目标,让人们了解会议的目的和任务;
2)在会议前分发会议议程,帮助与会者计划和准备做出有效贡献;
