Conventions of Descriptive Essays Illustrated by Sample ParagraphsAppealing-to-the-Senses Description: Let the reader see, smell, hear, taste, and feel what you write in your essay. The thick, burnt scent of roasted coffee tickled the tip of my nose just seconds before the old, faithful alarm blared a distorted top-forty throughits tiny top speaker. Wiping away the grit of last night\'s sleep, the starch white sunlight blinded me momentarily as I slung my arm like an elephant trunk along the top of the alarm, searching for the snooze button. While stretching hands and feet to the four posts of my bed, my eyes opened after several watery blinks. I crawled out of the forter, edging awkwardly like a butterfly from a cocoon, swinging my legs over the side of the bed. The dusty pebbles on the chilled, wood floor sent ripples spiraling from my ankles to the nape of my neck when my feet hit the floor. Grabbing the apricot, terri-cloth robe, recently bathed in fabric softener and October wind, I knotted it tightly at my waist like a prestigious coat of armor and headed downstairs to battle the morning.Spatial-Order Description: Show the reader where things are located from your perspective.Billy Ray\'s Pawn Shop and Lawn Mower Repair looked like a burial groundfor country auction rejects. The blazing, red, diesel fuel tanks beamed in front of the station, looking like cheap lipstick against the pallid, wrinkled texture of the parking lot sand. The yard, not much larger than the end zone at General G. Patton High School on the north end of town, was framed with a rusted metallic hedge of lawn mowers, banana seat bicycles, and corroded oil drums. It wasn\'t a calico frame of rusted parts, but rather an orchestra of unwanted machinery that Billy Ray had arranged into sections. The yellow-tanked mowers rested silently at the right of the diesel fuel. Once red, now faded orange, mowers stood at attention to the left. The oil barrels, jaded and pierced with holes, bellared like chimes when the wind was right. The bikes rested sporadically throughout the lot. In the middle of it all was the office, a faded, steel roof supported by cheap two-by-fours and zebra paneling. Billy Ray was at home, usually, five blocks east of town on Kennel Road.2019年08月15日。

What are cars likely to do on snow?
• The ten-inch snowfall was beautiful, but it was also quite deadly. Cars had slid off the road, forcing drivers to walk on the ice. The town had several bad car collisions, mostly at corners. The worst one of all happened when a sixteen-year-old driver hit and killed a grandmother crossing Walnut Avenue.
What trouble does snowfall bring drivers?
Is description objective or subjective?
• A descriptive essay can be objective or subjective, giving the author a wide choice of tone and attitude. • Objective description of one's dog would mention facts like its height, weight and color. • Subjective description would include all that, but would also stress the author's feeling toward the dog, and its personality and habits. • Objective or subjective? • Blondie, a cute wiener dog with a winsome look, was my favorite pet. She liked to follow me. At the store, when I gave her half of my Twinkie, her eyes would twinkle. She liked fishing with me, especially when I caught minnows for her to eat. The only place she didn‘t go was school, but she waited at the bus stop for me, come cloud or rain. She was a great pet.

1. write about one or two aspects of a person
Sample 1:
My sister is a boyish girl./ Her hair is short and straight just like a boy’s. she doesn’t like bright colors such as red, yellow, pink and green, but likes white, black and grey best. Never caring for skirts, stockings and stylish shoes, she loves wearing jackets and jeans. A pair of white sneakers are always on her feet. Sometimes she wears a men’s suit and a pair of men’s leather shoes as if she were a gentleman./
Basketball and football are her favorite sports. She also enjoys watching boxing and wrestling on TV. She always shouts and cheers excitedly when she is watching a football match. When she is with her friends, she often says “Ladies first” to other girls. The most interesting thing is that she has been mistaken for a boy many times. And she is very pleased with that. She always says that Mom made a mistake and she should have been a boy.
I looked at him. He was thin, short, and dark. His hair was like a bundle of straw. His dirty clothes and tired look were clearly signs of a long travel. His clothes were made of cheap cloth. The coat was too short and the trousers too loose. And he wore a pair of rubber shoes, which were very unfashionable. He did not look like a smart freshman at all. “A yokel,” I concluded.
