A Farmer Feeds I Million Kids Every School DayCLast year I realized I hadn’t spo ken to anyone but my family members in days. When I left my job in my late twenties to write a novel, I felt very happy. No more forcing myself awake at the early hours of the morning and worrying what to wear, no more braving the subway during rush hour. I could wake up when I felt like it and enjoy my coffee as I worked on my book.At first it was like being in heaven. But months later I began to feel lonely. It was just me, my work, and the Internet. I spent hours looking through the website instead of writing. I thought I was still connected to everyone around me but in fact I was more lonely than ever. As a result, I became more afraid of being out in the world. I warned to step away from the lonely life I had brought to myself and have a normal schedule again. Iconsidered renting an office but I realized I would still be lonely. What I had in mind something Td had all those years ago—big shared table filled with people I really liked.I phoned a friend who worked at home too and asked if she would be interested in getting an office together. She’d been feeling just as lonely as I had, so she jumped at opportunity. I asked another friend to join us, and together we found a beautiful space in my favorite part of town. Others soon heard about our office and asked if they could join. There are nine of us here now. Each of us has found that we now love the routine (日常规律) of going to work again, and we are happier than before. Now, we tire needed by other people too.In my twenties, it felt like I was going to work every day with my best friends, and for the first time in years, I feel that way again. I feel pity because I am actually skilled in the technology field. While I appreciate all the ways that technology has made our lives better, it comes at an environment cost.Electronic waste, also known as “e-waste”, is the term used to describe the rapidly I wing stream of waste from useless electronics. These items include anything from computers, TVs and phones to washing machines and refrigerators. Most of these electronics are often not rubbish, but simply given up for the latest version (版本) on the market.Findings show that we produced 41.8 million tons of e-waste all over the world in 2014. Even more surprisingly, it is believed that less than one-sixth is properly recycled or reused. While the bad influence of e-waste is big and growing, most people probably don’t realize its reach. The lack (缺乏) of proper recycling leads to harmful materials going into the environment. Harmful materials cause all sorts of health problems.Maybe the worst part of this problem is that most e-waste from developed countries is exported (出口) to developing countries, which is picked over by locals who want to mine useful materials from it. The improper recovery methods are often performed by local women and children. Many survive on mining these products, but with poor practices and regulations, it comesat a much higher cost—the health of the planet and its people.32. What does the author possibly do?A. A new reporter.B. A law student.C. A technical engineer.D. An environment professor.33. E-waste refers to electronic products that _________.A. are out of dateB. are actually rubbish.C. fail to be used againD. sell badly on the market.34. According to the text, how does the public see e-waster?A. They try to avoid it.B. They think nothing of it.C. They try to make use of it.D. They make lots of research on it.55. Why do some developing countries bring in e-waste?A. To earn money.B. To study it carefully.C. To get it reused properly.D. To help take it apart.

第Ⅰ卷第一部分:阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)第一节(共15小题, 每小题2分,满分30分)ATwo brothers, Herbert and James, lived with their mother and a cat named Edgar. James was particularly devoted to the cat, and when he had to leave town for several days, he left Herbert careful instructions about the pet’s care. At the end of his first da y away, James telephoned his brother, “How is Edgar?”“Edgar is dead.” Herbert answered. There was a pause. Then James said, “Herbert, you’re insensitive (漠然的). You know how close I was to Edgar. You should have broken the news to me slowly. When I asked about Edgar tonight, you should have said, ‘Edgar’s on the roof , but I have called the fire department to get him down.’ And tomorrow when I called, you could have said the firemen were having trouble getting Edgar down, but you were hopeful they would succeed. Then when I called the third time, you could have told me that the firemen have done their best, but unfortunately Edgar had fallen off the roof and was at the veterinarian’s (兽医站). Then when I called the last time, you could have said that although everything possible had been done for Edgar, he had died. That’s the way a sensitive man would have told me about Edgar. And, oh, before I forget,” James added, “how is mother?”“Oh,” Herbert said, pausing for a moment, “She’s on the roof.”1. James telephoned his brother at the end of his first day away because he wanted to know _____.A. what he was doingB. whether he was goodC. whether the cat was goodD. where his mother was2. Why did James say his brother was insensitive?A. Because he told him the news directly.B. Because he killed their pet.C. Because his mother was on the roof.D. Because he missed the truth about the cat.3. From the last paragraph of the passage, we can know that the mother was probably _____.A. on the roofB. ill or even deadC. repairing the houseD. playing gamesBIs there anything more important than health? I don’t think so.“Health isthe greatest wealth.”wise people say. You can’t be good at y our studies or work well when you are ill. If you have aheadache, toothache, backache, earache or bad pain in the stomach , if you complain of a bad cough,if you run a high temperature and have a bad cold, or if you suffer from high or low blood pressure, I think youshould go to t he doctor. The doctor will examine your throat, feel your pulse, tes t your bloodpressure, take your temperature, sound your heart and lungs, test y our eyes, check your teeth or have your chest X-rayed. After that he will advise some treatment, or some medicine. The only thing youhave to do is to follow his advice.Speaking about doctor’s advice, I can’t help telling you a funn y story. An old gentleman came to see the doctor. The man was very ill.He told the doctor abouthis weakness, memory loss and serious problems with his heart and lungs. The doctor examined himand said there was no medicine for his disease. He told his patient to go to a quiet place for a month and have a good rest. He a lso advised him to eat a lot of meat, drink two glasses of red wine every day andtake long walks. In other words, the doctor advised him to follow the rule: “Eat at pleasure, drink with measure and enjoy life as it is.”The doctor also said that if the man wanted to be well again, heshouldn’t smoke more than one cigarette a day.A month later the gentleman came into the doctor’s office. He l ooked cheerful andhappy. He thanked the doctor and said that he had never felt a healthier man.“ But youknow, doctor,”he said, “it’s not easy to begin smoking at my age.”4. From the last sentence of the passage, we learn the man_______ before the doctor told him not to smoke more than one cigarette a day.A. was a heavy smokerB. didn’t smoke so muchC. didn’t smokeD. began to learn to smokeCIt doesn’t matter when and how much a person sleeps , but everyone needs some rest to stay alive. That’s what all doctors thought , until they heard about Herpin. Herpin, it was said , never slept. Could this be true? The doctors decided to see this strange man themselves.Herpin was 90 years old when the doctors came to his home in New Jersey. They thought for sure that he got some sleep of some kind. So they stayed with him and watched every movement he made. But they were surprised. Though they watched him hour after hour and day after day, they never saw him sleeping. In fact, he did not even own a bed. He never needed one.The only rest that Herpin sometimes got was sitting in a comfortable chair and reading newspapers. The doctors were puzzled by this strange continuous sleeplessness. They asked him many questions, hoping to find an answer. They found only one answer that might explain his condition. Herpin remembered some talk about his mother having been injured several days before he was born. But that was all. Was this the real reason? No one could be sure. Herpin died at the age of 94.8. The main idea of this passage is that_____rge numbers of people do not need sleepB. a person was found who actually didn’t need any sleepC.everyone needs some sleep to stay aliveD.people can live longer by trying not to sleep9. The doctors came to visit Herpin, expecting_____A.to cure him of his sleeplessnessB.to find that his sleeplessness was not really trueC.to find out why some old people did not need any sleepD.to find a way to free people from the need of sleeping10. After watching him closely, the doctors came to believe that Herpin_____A.needed some kind of sleepB.was too old to need any sleepC.needed no sleep at allD.often sleep in a chair11. One reason that might explain Herpin’s sleeplessness was _____A.his mo ther’s injury before he was bornB.that he had gradually got rid of the sleeping habitC.his magnificent physical conditionD.that he hadn’t got a bedDTourism wasn’t as important as it is today. In the past, only people with a good deal of money could travel on holidays to other countries. More people travel today than in the past because there is a growing middle class in many parts of the world; that is to say, people now have more money for travel. Special plane fares(费用) for tourists make travel less expensive and more attractive than ever before. One person doesn’t travel for the same reason as another. But most people enjoy seeing countries that are different from their own. They also like to meet new people and to taste new food.Tourism causes many changes in a country and in people’s lives. Dear Peter,
I’m happy to receive your letter saying you’re interested in Chinese traditional sports and that you’re coming to watch the 11th National Traditional Games of Ethnic Minorities to be held in our city from 8th to 16th this September. You’re warmly welcome.
I’m wondering when you’re arriving and what your schedule is. By then, we’ll watch the Games together. Besides, I’m going to show you around some places of interest nearby and we’ll have a taste of our local snacks, too. What do you think of them? By the way, it is better to surf the Internet to have a general idea of the events of the Games in advance.
Please write to me if you have any further questions.
Yours,
Li Hua
