The productivity of workers in countries such as Japan and Germany is increasing. American machine tools, on average, are old, relatively inefficient, and rapidly being obsolete, whereas those of our petitors overseas, in parison, are newer and more efficient. We are no longer the most productive workers in the world. We are no longer the leaders in industrial innovation (革新). We are an immensely wealthy nation of educated men and women who seem to have lost sight of the fact that everything—from the simplest necessities to the finest luxuries—must be produced through our own collective hard work. We have e to expect automatic increases in our collective standard of living, but we seem to have forgotten that these increases are possible only when our productivity continues to grow. One thing that must change is the rate at which we substitute capital equipment for human labor. Simply put, our labor force has increased at a far greater rate than has our stock of capital investment. We seem to have forgotten that our past productivity gains, to a large extent, were realized from substitutions of capital for human labor. Today, 3 times as many robots are listed as capital assets by Japanese firms as by United States firms. There is no doubt that robots will bee a mon sight in American factories. Representing a new generation of technology, robots will replace factory labor much as the farm tractor replaced the horse. Robot technology has much to offer. It offers higher levels of productivity and quality at lowercosts; in promises to free men and women from the dull, repetitious toil of the factory, it is likely to have an impact on society parable to that made by the growth of puter technology.21. So far as the influence on society is concerned, _______.A. robot technology seems to be much more promising than puter technologyB. puter technology has less to offer than robot technologyC. robot technology can be pared with puter technologyD. robot technology cannot be pared with puter technology25. Passage 2It is always interesting to visit another country, especially for those who have never traveled a great deal. Foreign Travel can be very educational for anyone if he is interested enough to make preparations beforehand. Learning the language of the new country would be difficult for the traveler, but the benefits of such an effort would become obvious immediately on his arrival. It may not seem important to him when he comfortably stays at home, but knowing how to order a meal or book a room is necessary for the newcomer in a strange country. Without knowing the language, it is very difficult for the stranger to understand the people of the new country and their customs.Of course, in our small world it is often possible to find someone who understands our own, but this is only second-best for the traveler. To be sure, he can see places and things without the use of a language, but places and things are not the heart of any country. To get the greatest benefit from a trip to another country, it is how important for the visitor to have an understanding of the language.Passage 3Did you sleep well last night? Maybe many people will answer No. In fact in the world about one in three people do not have good sleep. If you say you do not have good sleep, it means waking early and not getting back to sleep, often interrupted short period of sleep, or hours of wakefulness. You may get tired, worried, and anxious. Your memory and ability to remember things will be affected. Then what should you do when you have the trouble? Do not worry about it too much. First, let’s see whether you can sleep yourself. The ways are as follows:First, make sure that your bedroom isn’t too cold or too h ot. Keep it dark and quiet.Second, check your lifestyle: Do not drink tea, coffee, cola or chocolate four hours before going to bed. Drink less liquid so that you can have no or fewer visits to the toilet.Set your body clock well by getting up and going to bed at the fixed time every day. You had better not take any daytime naps.Develop a relaxing bedtime habit. Read or listen to music, then take a warm bath. If you really can not sleep, try some bread, rice or milk. They will help you fall asleep.Go for a daily walk. Natural light helps you to put your body clock into correct habit, so do exercise outdoors if you can.Forget the worries of the day. Write down any worries, thoughts or questions before you go to bed. With these written down, you will have less to think about and your sleep will become easier.。

Not long ago, there lived in Auckland a working family who dreamed about a house of their own. Anyone then could read in the newspapers about the building companies who offered to put people into a new house 1 only a $1,000 deposit. Of course, the remainder had to be paid off with interest over a period of twenty years or so.
The worker and his wife hopefully went to one of these companies 2 this wonderful offer. And the man in the office said. “Yes, sure. You bring along $1,000 and we can 3 you with a new house.”
So the worker and his wife had to work hard and in twelve months’ time they returned to the building man with $1,000. But the man in the office said, “Look, I’m sorry, 4 we’ll need $1,500 now. Costs have gone up since we saw you last, you know.”
The couple thought it over and decided it would not take very long to save the extra $500 if they worked hard.
In six moths they worked 5 overtime and saved the $500 in spite of the high rent they had to pay for their flat. Back to the building man they 6 with their $1,500. But to their surprise he 7 the deposit was now $3,000.

“Well”, said the man, “I think we can stabilize the situation for about twelve months. By the time you come with $3,000, we will have had the house 9 for you.
The couple left, sad at heart as they saw their dream house 10 __. By the time they had saved the extra $1.500, no doubt the deposit would have become still higher, maybe $5,000, then $10,000 and then…!
