A Christmas Carol《圣诞颂歌》讲述了这样一个故事:富有而冷漠无情, 连乞丐都不愿向他讨要的自私透顶的吝啬鬼斯克鲁奇(Scrooge)在圣诞夜被三个圣诞精灵造访:“过去之灵”(the Ghost of Christmas Past )、“现在之灵”(the Ghost of Christmas Present) 、“未来之灵”(the Ghost of Yet to Come ) 。

A Christmas Carol 圣诞颂歌 CHAPTER 7

A Christmas Carol 圣诞颂歌CHAPTER 7 The Cratchits 第7章克拉奇蒂一家Scrooge and the Spirit of Christmas Present went on, invisible, as they had been before, into the suburbs of the town where Bob Cratchit, Scrooge’s clerk, lived with his family in a small house. In the house, at this moment, were Bob’s wife, his daughter, Belinda, his son, Peter, and a young boy and girl. Bob and his son, Tiny Tim, had not yet arrived home.
“What has happened to your father,” said Mrs. Cratchit, “and your brother, Tiny Tim? And your sister, Martha? They weren’t as late as this last Christmas Day.”“你父亲发生了什么事,”克拉奇蒂太太说,“还有你弟弟,小蒂姆?
”“Here’s Martha, mother!” said a girl who now appeared at the door.“

This past December,I read Charles Dickens'A Christmas Carol for the first time.Of course,I have seen the story done on stage a number of times(mostly as a child),and the various movies are a yearly Christmas tradition.(My favorite is Albert Finney's portrayal in the early 1970's British musical version"Scrooge.")But despite being very familiar with the story itself through stage and film, and despite having bought a copy of the book some years back,I had never taken the time to sit down and read the story.
So,having bought a new edition of the book after Christmas last year,I finally sat down in December and began the original story.

You, who weighs everything by gain? I am prepared to bear you company.
And Scrooge was better than his word.
I don't make merry myself at Christmas, and I can't afford to make idle people merry.
Let me hear another sound out of you, Cratchit, and you'll keep Christmas by losing your situation! If I were to dock you a half a crown for it, you'd think yourself ill-used. And yet you don't think me ill-used when I pay a day's wages for no work.
