第二步预测文章内容(个人自由发言)
1. Ask the students to read the title “Making the news” and look at the pictures, then guess what the passage may be about.
2. Ask one or two students to give their point of view.
3. Guess the meaning of the following words and structures. Cover a story: it means to go and interview somebody about an incident or happening.
To have a “nose” for a story: it means to be able to “smell” when somebody is trying to hide a good story that reflects badly on him/herself.
A trick of the trade: It means something that helps you do the job in a professional way.
Get all your facts straight: it means making sure that the story is accurate.
Get the wrong end of the stick: It means that (for some reason) you do not understand what is being to you.
A real “scoop”: it means an important story which your
newspaper gets ahead of all the other newspapers.
第三步阅读文章
1. Let the students scan the passage, and underline the questions Zhou Yang asks. Look at the way the questions develop. Can I go out on a story immediately?
What do I need to take with me?
What do I need to remember when I go out to cover a story? What mistakes must I avoid?
Why is listening so important?
How can I listen to answers if I have to write down what he or she is saying?
Have you ever had a case where somebody accused your reporters of getting the wrong end of the stick?
The questions develop naturally from the answers of Hu Xin and yet the form a developmental whole things to take, things to remember, things to avoid, importance of listening, and ensuring accuracy.
2. Read the text quickly and try to answer the following questions:
① Is it the first job for Zhou Yang to do at China Daily?
② Can he go out on a story on his own?
③ Who will take photographs?
④ A good reporter must have a nose. What does this mean?
⑤ What does a reporter should not do?
⑥ Why is listening so important?
⑦ Why is it important to use small recorders when a reporter is interviewing someone?
3. Read the passage again and divide it into three sections, each of which looks at one duty of a reporter. Then write down the main idea of each section.
A reporter's duties are:
1) to work in a team 2) how to get an accurate story 3)how to protect a story from accusations
4. Let students have an intensive reading. Try to get more information and then complete the following chart.
