In fact, the polar bear does not have white fur. It just appears to be white. Polar bears have a very good sense of smell. It helps them to find food. During summer, polar bears sleep longer, because they are able to find their food more easily at night. Usually, after a meal, polar bears have a short sleep. A polar bear can have 2-3 babies at a time. They live with their mothers until they are about two-and-a-half years old. However, polar bears will die out soon because of people. There are only 20, 000 to 25, 000 polar bears in the world. The ones that are left are trying to survive today. The number of polar bears is becoming smaller and smaller because of the loss of sea ice-polar bears mostly inhabit(居住于)the sea ice, not the land ice. This is happening because of global warming(全球气候变暖), pollution, hunting and so on.Ordinary people don't care, but great people have the power and want to save tigers, fight for giant pandas and save polar bears. Ordinary people will wait, but great people will find a new world. For me, I will not wait. I will take the bus more often from now on. To talk about polar bears and suggest that people protect animals.CThere are several ways you can find out about the countries and places you wish to visit. You can talk to friends who have traveled to the places, you can go and see a colour film about them, or you can read a travel book.It seems that there are three kinds of travel books. The first are those that give a personal, subjective(主观的)idea of travels which their writer has got himself. These books can be useful if the writers share their traveling experiences with others. The second kind are those books which give objective(客观的)information of things to be done and seen. If a cultured person has written such a book about the facts of a place, then it is more useful. The third kind are those books which are called "a guide" to some place or other. If they are good, they will describe and explain the place in detail. Like the first kind, they can be interesting and exciting, but their main purpose is to help the reader plan his travel in the most practical way.Whatever kind of travel book you choose, you must make sure that the book does not describe everything as interesting, exciting or fantastic. You must also keep an open eye on its date of publication(出版)because travel is very practical matter and many things change quickly in the 21st century. Finally, you should make sure that it's easy to find the useful information for your travel.( )1.The underlined phrase "a cultured person" means a person with .A. a good appearanceB. a good educationC. a lot of experienceD. a lot of money( )2.The date of publication must be noticed because .A. the prices of travel books may be differentB. the writers of travel books may be differentC. the information in travel books is always the sameD. the information in travel books is always changing( )3.According to the passage, it is best to read before traveling to a place of interest.A. the first kind of travel booksB. the second kind of travel booksC. the third kind of travel booksD. some travel articles in newspaperDAs the saying goes, "Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime." This is the way the charity organization Heifer International(国际小母牛慈善组织)wants to end world hunger. It began in the 1930s when an American farmer, Dan West, went to Spain to help people in need. He tried to feed the people with milk. But it seemed that there would never be enough milk. It made him think that what they needed was "not a cup, but a cow".Dan West returned to America. He worked together with some friends to find ways to end hunger. He believed giving animals and providing(提供)training would stop world hunger. With his help, Heifer International was set up.On Heifer International's website(网站), you will see a list of animals like cows, chickens, pigs and even fish and bees. You can offer help by buying some animals for one certain family. Those animals will have babies. With more and more animals, these families will be able to support themselves. Once these families get better lives, they will pass on the act of kindness to others. More importantly, you are buying the resources(资源)for programs run by Heifer International to help more families. The programs also help small-sized farms. As a rule, each farmer must give his animal's first female(雌性) baby to another in need. Heifer International also provides training on animals' health and feeding. And these farmers all agree to teach others what they have learned as another rule. However, there is still a long way to go. The milk may run out. But if families have their own cows, they can get plenty of milk to feed themselves. The organization wants the farmers to go on working together, helping each other and learning from each other. Maybe hunger can really be stopped.( )1 .According to the passage, we know that Dan West .A. set up a team in SpainB. helped people with enough fishC. was a Spanish farmerD. helped set up Heifer International( )2 .Which of the following is NOT TRUE about the charity organization Heifer International?A. Heifer International makes a list of animals on its website.B. Farmers in the program must teach others how to feed animals.C. Farmers in the program must give all the animals' babies to othersD. Heifer International provides training on animals' health and feeding.( )3.The best title of this passage may be " ".A. Advice on Feeding CowsB. A Cow Instead of a CupC. The Charity OrganizationsD. But can other animals do the same? Elephants can! They can use their eyes and nosesto tell the difference between dangerous people and friendly people. In Kenya, scientists found that elephants knew the different clothes of Maasai and Kamba people.Maasai men often kill animals for food, so they are dangerous to elephants. Kamba men are farmers and not a danger to elephants.Last year, some animal scientists did an experiment. They found that elephants reacted(反应)differently to smell and color.First , elephants were shown clothes of either a Maasai or a Kamba man. When the elephants smelt the clothes worn by a Maasai man, they moved away fast. When they smelt the clothes worn by Kamba men, they relaxed. Then, the same elephants were shown red clothes. They got angry, because red is often worn by Maasai men. Instead of running away, the elephants rushed angrily to the red clothes. Why? It had rained during the night and the playground was very muddy (泥泞的). They had just put on clean clothes, so I was a little worried about the pools of water on the playground. It was not long before Kathy got her beautiful skirt dirty on the playground. She dug through the rocks. I was about to blame her for getting her clothes dirty when she ran towards me with a smile on her face. When she got to me, she handed me a little heart-shaped rock and said, “Here Mom! Here is a heart for you-just because I love you! Keep it!”with tears in my eyes, I thanked her.Should I blame her for getting her clothes muddy? No way! I still have that little heart-shaped rock. It is one of the best gifts that I have ever received. I realize that many times it is not necessary for us adults to worry about the small things our children do. Let them do what they’d like to.I will spend a lot more time on the playground with my children. I’m sure I will learn a lot from the children. It reminds me of some years ago when my grandfather told me, “You would not enter the kingdom (王国) of happiness until you pretended (假装) to be a small child.”1. How? Packaging (包装) is the silent salesman but it can make shoppers believe what it says..There on the shelves, each bottle, can, box, and jar has been carefully designed and measured to speakto the inner self of the consumer (消费者), so that is buying not only a product but also his belief in life. Scientists have studied consumer behavior recently and found that the look of the package has a great effect on the "quality" of the product and on how well it sells, because "Consumers generally cannot tell between a product and its package. Many products are packages and many packages are products," as Louis Cheskin, the first social scientist studying consumers' feeling for packaging, noticed.Colors are one of the best tools in packaging. Studies of eye movement have shown that colors draw human attention quickly. Take V8 for example. For many years, the bright red color of tomatoes and carrots on the thin bottle makes you feel that it is very good for your body. And the word "green" today can keep food prices going up.Shapes are another attraction. Circles often suggest happiness and peacefulness, because these shapes are pleasing to both the eye and the heart. That's why the round yellow M signs of McDonald's are inviting to both young and old. This new consumer response (反应) to the colors and shapes of packages reminds producers and sellers that people buy to satisfy both body and spirit.1. If a package or a product is round in shape, it can ______.A. bring excitement to the consumersB. attract the consumers' attentionC. catch the eye movement of the consumersD. produce a happy and peaceful feeling2. "And the word 'green' today can keep food prices going up." This sentence suggeststhat consumers today are ______.A. starting to notice the importance of new foodB. enjoying the beauty of nature more than beforeC. beginning to like green vegetablesD. paying more attention to their healthy4. It can be inferred from the passage that V8 is a kind of ______.A. vegetable dishB. healthy juiceC. iced drinkD. red vegetableDAs any homemaker who has tried to keep order at the dinner table knows, there is far more to a family meal than food. Sociologist Michael Lewis has been studying 50 families to find out just how much more.Lewis and his co-workers carried out their study by videotaping (录像) the families while they ate ordinary meals in their own homes. They found that parents with small families talk actively with eachother and their children. But as the number of children gets larger, conversation gives way to the parents' efforts to control the loud noise they make. That can have an important effect on the children. "In general the more question-asking the parents do, the higher the children's IQ scores," Lewis says. "And the more children there are, the less question-asking there is."The study also provides an explanation for why middle children often seem to have a harder time in life than their siblings (兄弟姐妹). Lewis found that in families with three or four children, dinner conversation is likely to center on the oldest child, who has the most to talk about, and the youngest, who needs the most attention.
