Protestantism is the Western religion I most identify with. On the one hand, Protestantism is humanitarian and simplifiedcompared with Catholicism. On the other hand, there are many enlightened and progressivedoctrines. What’s more, many scientists, philosophers and astronomers are greatly influenced by Protestantism, and we can say Protestantism has greatly promoted the Western civilization. Another reason I like Protestantism is that there are many interesting western traditional festivals and practices related to Protestantism. For example, every protestants will go to church on Sunday and we are able to think about the things we have done in the past six days in a peaceful and solemnenvironment, and we are able to have a introspection about our wrong behaviors or bad habits and pray for forgiveness. As for holidays, we can see that most of the famous and international western holidays we already know are related to Protestantism. Moreover, most western holidays has an origin. For example, Christmas is an annual commemoration of the birth of Jesus Christ and a widely observed holiday, celebrated generally on December 25by millions of people around the world. A feast central to the Christian liturgical year, it closes the Advent season and initiates the twelve days of Christmastide, which ends after the twelfth night.Christmas is a civil holiday in many of the world's nations, which is celebrated by an increasing number of non-Christians, and is an integral part of the Christmas and holiday season.Halloween is another interesting one, and it is also known as AllHallows' Eve. It is a yearly celebration observed in a number of countries on October 31, the eve of the Western Christian feast of All Hallows (or All Saints) and the day initiating the celebration of Hallowmas.Catholicism may be the one that doesn’t appeal me. I have learned so many things about Catholicism in the middle ages and it’sdespotism and brutality really make me feel horrified.。

Halloween[ˌhæləʊˈi:n].Halloween[ˌhæləʊˈi:n]is a yearly celebration observed in a number of countries onOctober 31, the eve of the Western Christian feast(盛会)of All Hallows。

In this holiday ,there are some traditional activities and food.Trick-or-treating is a customary celebration for children on Halloween[ˌhæləʊˈi:n].Children go in costume from house to house, asking for treats such as candy or sometimes money, with the question, "Trick or treat?" The word "trick" refers to a "threat" to perform mischief(恶作剧)on the homeowners or their property if no treat is given.Halloween [ˌhæləʊˈi:n]costume [ˈkɔstju:m]parties generally fall on or aroundOctober 31, often on the Friday or Saturday before Halloween. Halloween costumes are traditionally modeled after supernatural figures such as monsters, ghosts [ɡəusts], witches, and devils. Over time, the costume selection extended to includepopular characters from fiction, celebrities and so on.Because Halloween comes in the wake of the yearly apple harvest, candy applescaramel[ˈkærəmel](焦糖)or taffy (乳脂)apples are common .Halloween treats made by rolling whole apples in a sticky sugar syrup[ˈsirəp](糖浆), sometimes followed by rolling them in nuts(坚果). One custom that persists in modern-day Ireland is the baking(烘烤)of a barmbrack[ˈbɑ:mbræk](果子面包), which is a light fruitcake, into which a plain ring, a coin and other charms(小装饰品)are placedbefore baking. It is said that those who get a ring will find their true love in the ensuing[enˈsju:ɪŋ](接着发生的)year.发展和分化Christianity began as a Jewish[ˈdʒu:ɪʃ] sect in the mid-1st century. Then it quickly grew in size and influence over a few decades, and by the 4th century had become the dominant religion within the Roman [rɔmə] Empire. During the Middle Ages, most of the remainder of Europe was Christianized, with Christians also being a sometimes large religious minority in the Middle East, North Africa ,parts of India and so on. Following the Age of Discovery,Christianity spread to the Americas, Australasia[ˌɔstrəˈleiʒjə], and the rest of the world. Christianity, therefore, is a major influence in the shaping of Western civilization. At present there are three largest groups in the world of Christianity ——the Roman Catholic Church, the Eastern Orthodox [ˈɔ:θədɔks]churches, and the various churches of Protestantism[ˈprɔtɪstənˌtɪzəm]. The Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox [ˈɔ:θədɔks] split from one another in the East-West Schism[ˈsɪzəm(分支) of 1054 AD, and Protestantism[ˈprɔtɪstənˌtɪzəm] came into existence during the Protestant Reformation of the 16th century, splitting from the Roman Catholic Church.SymbolsThe cross, which is today one of the most widely recognised symbols in the world, was used as a Christian symbol from the earliest times. Although the cross was known to the early Christians, the crucifix[ˈkru:səˌfɪks](耶稣钉在十字架上的苦像) did not appear in use until the 5th century.Christians from the very beginning adorned their tombs[tu:mz] with paintings of Christ, of the saints [seint], of scenes from the Bible and so on. The catacombs [ˈkætəkəum](地下墓穴)are the cradle(摇篮)of all Christian art. The first Christians had no prejudice against images, pictures, or statues.Among the symbols employed by the primitive Christians, that of the fish seems to have ranked first in importance. The fish was depicted as a Christian symbol in the first decades of the 2nd century. Its popularity among Christians was due to the famous consisting of the initial letters of five Greek [gri:k] words forming the word for fish (Ichthys), which words briefly but clearly described the character of Christand the claim to worship of believers(: Iesous Christos Theou Yios Soter, meaning, Jesus Christ, Son of God, Saviour.)Other major Christian symbols include the chi-rho monogram[ˈmɔnəuɡræm](字母组合), the dove[dʌv](鸽) , the sacrificial lamb [læm](神的), and many others.。

Christianity基督教

Christianity基督教

Christianity基督教This is the major religion in the West.It was originally the Jewish犹太 religion. Later it was given structure by the Romans, so the oldest Christian church is called the Roman Catholic Church. The leader of this church is called The Pope, and he still lives in Rome. The Catholic Church was resisted by the Protestants hundreds of years ago. King Henry VIII is the famous English king (with 6 wives) who began the Church of England to fight Catholic religious rule.Today there are many different churches, but the basic book is called The Bible, and they all follow ten simple laws called The Ten Commandments. The 10 commandments诫命1 Always look for the real truth.2 Never pretend 假装 your own limited 有限 knowledge is the real truth.3Don’t pretend that talking about the real truth makes you more important than the next person.4 Work for 6 days, and then rest for 1 day.5 Respect your mother and father.6Don’t kill anyone.7 Only have sex with your husband or wife.8Don’t steal.9Don’t tell lies about other people.10Don’t desire what other people have.Christianity also has one simple central rule called The Golden Rule:“Do to others what you hope they would do to you.”This is similar to the Chinese:"What you do not wish for yourself, do not do to others.” 孔夫子The Bible is a kind of cultural history, and tells many stories. The central figure in these Christian stories is Jesus Christ, also known as the Lord, or the King of the Jews.Christians say he represents 标志 the way to find God.Non-Christians can say he represents the perfect person. The Bible story says Jesus was born in a very poor little house used to keep sheep warm during winter. 3 Wise Men, kings in their countries, followed a bright star to visit him in his little home. They brought rich gifts and gave him great respect. This is the time we call Christmas. His mother, Mary, had never had sex, so she is known as the Virgin Mary, which made both her and her son Jesus very unusual.Jesus grew up as a poor man, and began to tell parables (stories that tell a lesson). The most famous of these parables is…..The Good Samaritan. One day a man, a Jew, was attacked by robbers, who beat him and took everything he had.As the man lay bleeding 鲜血 and in pain, a priest (religious leader) arrived, but he went to the other side of the street and did not stop. Then, a Levite (another religious group friendly to the Jews) came, but he also did not want to help. Then a Samaritan, an enemy of the Jews, came. This man felt sorry for the Jew, and stopped. He gave the hurt man medical help, took him to a hotel, and paid for the room, even though they were enemies. The story teaches us that people must be helped when they are in trouble, even if we do not like their ideas and ways of living. The Good Samaritan was a better friend and neighbour than the Jew’s own people. Jesus was eventually put up on a cross十字架 and left to die. The strong central idea Christians have is that he died to bring people closer to the real truth – whatever you think that is.。
