U3 How to Get a Job at Google

U3 How to Get a Job at Google

Unit 3 Job HuntingText A How to Get a Job at Google目录课文:How to Get a Job at Google (Language Focus) (6)How to Get a Job at GoogleBy Thomas L. Friedman1 Last June, in an interview with Adam Bryant of The Times, Laszlo Bock, the senior vice president of people operations for Google — i.e., the guy in charge of hiring for one of the world’s most successful companies — noted that Google had determined that “GPA’s are worthless as a criteria for hiring, and test scores are worthless. ... We found that they don’t predict anything.” He also noted that the “proportion of people without any college education at Google has increased over time” — now as high as 14 percent on some teams. At a time when many people are asking, “How’s my kid gonna get a job?” I thought it would be useful to visit Google and hear how Bock would answer.2 Don’t get him wrong, Bock begins, “Good grades certainly don’t hurt.” Many jobs at Google require math, computing and coding skills, so if your good grades truly reflect skills in those areas that you can apply, it would be an advantage. But Google has its eyes on much more.3 “There are five hiring attributes we have across the company,” explained Bock. “If it’s a technical role, we assess your coding ability, and half the roles in the company are technical roles. For every job, though, the No. 1 thing we look for is general cognitive ability, and it’s not I.Q. It’s learning ability. It’s the ability to process on the fly. It’s the ability to pull together disparate bits of information. We assess that using structured behavioral interviews that we validate to make sure they’re predictive.”4 The second, he added, “is leadership — in particular emergent leadership as opposed to traditional leadership. Traditional leadership is, were you president of the chess club? Were you vice president of sales? How quickly did you get there? We don’t care. What we care about is, when faced with a problem and you’re a member of a team, do you, at the appropriate time, step in and lead. And just as critically, do you step back and stop leading, do you let someone else? Because what’s critical to be an effective leader in this environment is you have to be willing to relinquish power.”5 What else? Humility and ownership. “It’s feeling the sense of responsibility, the sense of ownership, to step in,” he said, to try to solve any problem — and the humility to step back and embrace the better ideas of others. “Your end goal,” explained Bock, “is what can we do together to problem-solve. I’ve contributed my piece, and then I step back.”6 And it is not just humility in creating space for others to contribute, says Bock, it’s “intellectual humility. Without humility, you are unable to learn.” It is why research shows that many graduates from hotshot business schools plateau. “Successful bright people rarely experience failure, and so they don’t learn how to learn from that failure,” said Bock.7 “They, instead, commit the fundamental attribution error, which is if something good happens, it’s because I’m a genius. If something bad happens, it’s because someone’s an idiot or I didn’t get the resources or the market moved. ... What we’ve seen is that the people who are the most successful here, who we want to hire, will have a fierce position. They’ll argue like hell. They’ll be zealots about their point of view. But then you say, ‘Here’s a new fact,’ and they’ll go, ‘Oh, well, that changes things; you’re right.’” You need a big ego and small ego in the same person at the same time.8 The least important attribute they look for is “expertise.” Said Bock: “If you take somebody who has high cognitive ability, is innately curious, willing to learn and has emergent leadership skills, and you hire them as an HR person or finance person, and they have no content knowledge, and you compare them with someone who’s been doing just one thing and is a world expert, the expert will say, ‘I’ve seen this 100 times before; here’s what you do.’” Most of the time the nonexpert will come up with the same answer, added Bock, “because most of the time it’s not that hard.” Sure, once in a while they will mess it up, he said, but once in a while they’ll also come up with an answer that is totally new. And there is huge value in that.9 To sum up Bock’s approach to hiring: Talent can come in so many different forms and be built in so many nontraditional ways today, hiring officers have to be alive to every one — besides brand-name colleges. Because “when you look at people who don’t go to school and make their way in the world, those are exceptional human beings. And we should do everything we can to find those people.” Too many colleges, he added, “don’t deliver on what they promise. You generate a ton of debt, you don’t learn the most useful things for your life. It’s [just] an extended adolescence.”10 Google attracts so much talent it can afford to look beyond traditional metrics, like GPA. For most young people, though, going to college and doing well is still the best way to master the tools needed for many careers. But Bock is saying something important to them, too: Beware. Your degree is not a proxy for your ability to do any job. The world only cares about — and pays off on — what you can do with what you know (and it doesn’t care how you learned it). And in an age when innovation is increasingly a group endeavor, it also cares about a lot of soft skills — leadership, humility, collaboration, adaptability and loving to learn and re-learn. This will be true no matter where you go to work.

It is vital /necessary /important /urgent /imperative /desirable /advisable/ natural /essential + that + do;It is time /about time / high time + that + 一般过去时:proposal /suggestion +that do;lest that should +do;if only that would do。

2)状语从句的考点为:非if引导的条件状语从句,此类句子多用at times,provided,so long as,incase,once等来替代if;由even if/so,now that,for all 等引导的让步状语从句;just/hardly…when引导的时间状语从句;more than,as…as,not so much as,the same as,as much as等引导的比较状语从句。

因为现在四级改革后,只考词汇,很多六级高频词在四级中做为每年新加入四级考点的词汇,所以考四级的同学,要认真听《新东方大学英语词汇课堂》---我大学词汇班的讲课录音四级词汇题中重点考词词汇如下:冲刺阶段重点背诵出现8次credit出现7次entitle raise range出现6次abandon access adopt charge cultivate exhaust extensive grant leak present regardless of reserve出现5次acquire adapt assemble associate attend available expand identical insert intensive involve matter preferable promote regulate replace retain split transfer transmission transport出现4次accumulate acknowledge affect arouse assist benefit bring up change confuse considerable convention crack disposal dissolve distance effect emergency exaggerate expense fare fault in spite of incident inform install interval lively pace particular perform precaution provide rate recognition regular relate relief rigid scold settle shift specific status stick stretch tend time-consumed transform transmit vision出现3次absence accompany accuse acquaint aggressive aimed alter amaze ambitious amuse appointment approve arise arrange artificial assume assure attach attribute bare bargain barrier blank burst cancel clumsy come out complete concern conflict considerate consult consume contact continually contract contribute coordinate cost crisis damage decisive declined decrease deliver demand dense dispute edge equipped event exception exchange exhibit exploit exposure feature flexible flow focused follow guarantee guide halting harsh hint hollow impression indispensable inevitable inquire insured issue justify lack lead length manner mild miss mission mobile mood multiply neglect now that occasion payments peculiar plunge preparation press progress proper prospect provision put down put up puzzle rank refuse regard register release result retreat reward rise route scope shrink slight smooth special spot squeeze strain strike suit tedious unstable urgent vacant view witness yield出现过2次absorbed abstract account accurate adequate affair anxiety appeal applicable approachable arrival article assessment at intervals at length automatically award backs battle Besides blowing border bored boundary bring about bring around bring out build up But for called off calling for calling in calling on calling up campaign capacity careful case certain closed down combating come along come on come round comes around to comes on to comes to comes up to comparatively compose confinement consequently consider consistent constant contain content continuous contrary copying critical cursed cuts down decorated deliberate deny depression derive despair desperation Despite diplomatic directed disappeared discarded discipline discourageddismissal distress diverse dot drifting drop dynamic eager echo edition editorial efficient embraces employ enclose endure enlarging enormous entertained escape even though evidence excess exclamation exclusive excuse expectations expose extent extra extremely failure faith fancy fantasy fashions fatigue favor favorable favorite fees fence fierce flaw forceful fortunate gap gather generous get across get away get off get over gets on with governing grips grown guilty hard heroic identify If only ignore imagination imitating impact impose in all in brief In case of in doubt in harmony in particular in short incline include increase influential injure innocent insight intelligent intention interrupting jam joint last leap lengthen lessened lie light likely maintain march margin mark materials mature meaningful mess minimum motion move normal notion object oblige obstacle obvious offense offer omit on the contrary on the other hand only if optional order original outlook overall overtaking particles past patch path Penetrating Perceiving persist phrase pioneer pledge possibility prediction preference premature presentation Preserving prevailing prevent principle prior probability proceed profession projected proportions propose publish pulled out pulled over pulled through pulled up purchase put away put off put over puts up with question rather than recession recover reduce regain reject rejection relieve remedy remove reproduction request require rescue resist resort responsible restrain restriction revival rewrite roar roughly rub rude ruling sample scale scene schedule scrape scream secure seek sensible sensitive set aside set back set off set out shadow shielded shortcomings slide slim solid source speculations spoil spread spring up stakes standard step struggle stuff substances substantial substitute succession suitable suppose survival sustain synthetically takes over tame tense thickness tips tired touch trace translate trend trouble turned down turned off turned up unceasingly vary vigorous virtue went off whistle widening。

Try as I might to stay cheerful, all I ever get is hassle, sometimes with people (especially boys, god, when will they grow up?), but mostly with money. It’s just so expensive out here! Everyone wants a slice off you. The Inland Revenue wants to deduct income tax, the bank manager wants repayments on my student loan, the landlord wants the rent, gas, water, electricity an d my mobile bills keep coming in, and all that’s before I’ve had anything to eat. And then some bright spark calls me outof the blue, asking if I’m interested in buying a pension. And this rate, I won’t even last till the end of the year, let alone till I’m 60..
