My Review on The Gift of The MagiDo you remember the first time reading O'Henry's The Gift of the Magi? Do you recall the lump in your throat when the hero, Jim, sold his only valuable possession, his watch, to buy a set of jeweled combs to decorate Della's long beautiful hair? And the tears that rolled down your cheeks when you read that she sold the one luxurious thing she had, her magnificent hair, to buy a chain for his watch. To me, The novel’s ending really makes me moved. How wonderful to love so deeply and how glorious to be loved so much.The story of The Gift of The Magi is mainly concerned about the young couple who presented each other with gifts. They lived a hard life, but they loved each other very much. They willingly sacrificed for each other the greatest treasures of their own. In the novel, O’Henry affirms noble qualities lying in every ordinary Americans and successfully portray them.However, besides what I said above, I think that what make this novel enjoy most popularity are its own styles: Reasonable artistic exaggeration and unexpected ending.Exaggeration is literary means most in use. In this novel, there is one paragraph describing the two possessions of the young couple in which they took great pride in: “Now, there were two possessions of the James Dillingham Youngs in which they both took a mighty pride. One was Jim’s gold watch that had been his father’s and his grandfather’s. The other was Della’s hair. Had the Queen of Sheba lived in the flat across the airshaft, Della would have let her hair hang out the window some day to dry just to depreciate Her Majesty’s jewels and gifts. Had King Solomon been the janitor, with all his treasures piled up in the basement, Jim would have pulled out his watch every time he passed, just to see him pluck at his beard from envy”. Is it true? No, certainly it is a kind of artistic exaggeration which prominent in the great sacrifice the couple made and impress the readers deeply.O’Henry uses exaggeration not only in the rhetoric or some details but in forming the main part of the novel even in depicting the basic plot. This kind of exaggeration is almost fantastic and inconceivable. However, when you close the book and think it hard, you will feel the exaggeration like a peculiar s calpel jabbing the sore of the capitalistic society inexorably. The exaggeration bases on reality. The great exaggeration O’Henry did in this novel , however, is just rooted in the society of that time. So his exaggeration shows forcefully the novel’s profoundity and art representativeness.The plot in this novel is distinctive and ingeniously conceived, but O’Henry shows this in the surprise ending or twist which is a relative new device to readers. In this novel, some important facts are concealed on purp ose first and a hint foreshadowing later development in the novel is given when the proper time comes. And at last what O’Henry has already planned is disclosed to make readers suddenly realize what has happened and be lost in thought. In this novel, O’Henry doesn’t show the chain in Della’s hand to Jim until the novel reached the end, so the readers get a clear idea that Della fails to attain her gifts on account of her buying the chain and Jim selling the watch. Therefore the comic result is actually full of grieved tragedy. We call a good ending: twist ending. O’Henry introduces this relatively new device successfully and therefore this novel is very forceful and absorbing. On the one hand the novel profoundly discloses the cold reality in which money is everything, on the other hand O’Henry shows much sympathy for the poor, and their hard life. Money is limited but love is boundless.All in all, the short novel The Gift of The Magi, as we know, employs reasonable artistic exaggeration and unexpected endi ng in it. Its author, O’Henry is so familiar with these characteristics of the forms of literature and utilizes them just right. In the Gift of The Magi, O’Henry takes one section of the life in New York in America, portrays artistically young couple and eulogizes their true love and the enormous sacrifice for each other’s happiness. Simultaneously he discloses the hard life at the bottom of the society, O’Henry really shows great sympathy for the couple and thousands of ordinary people who worried about food and clothing. In a word ,both significance and artistry of this novel can surely be regarded as an excellent work which enjoys great popularity among the short stories of the twentieth century.。

The Gift of the Magi
It's a short story by O • Henry that has moved me for a long time. Maybe most of you are familiar with its name：The Gift of the Magi. I have read it many times but every time I like to read it slowly and deliberately. I think "The Gift of the Magi" is meant to be savored.
Maybe there is no necessity for me to repeat the main idea of the story. But I'm so fascinated with the short story that I want to retell it to you, and to myself. It happened to a very poor but blissful young couple named Jim and Della in the end of 18th century in England. Because of the maladies of that society and the effect of economic crisis, they worked hard but earned little. Life is very hard for them. Despite of this, their love to each other and the enthusiasm for life didn't changed at all. When Christmas day was approaching , Della used the money she got from selling her beautiful hair which she treasured very much to give Jim a fob for his grandfather's pocket watch. But Jim had already sold that watch to buy Della tortoiseshell combs to wear in her long hair, not knowing she'd cut it off.
It appears that the gifts they gave each other have been useless. But I think they gave each other the best of what they had to make the other happy. Isn't that true love? We can image, in such rough conditions, as it said in the story, "Life is made up of sobs, sniffles, and smiles, sniffles predominating." It is absolutely reasonable for them to be beaten by the misery. But the fact is that no matter how tough life had been, they wouldn't lose heart. With strong faith and their love , they did their best to make the other pleased." Whenever Mr. James came home and reached his flat , above he was called “Jim”and greatly hugged by Mrs. James." Maybe this account is the best description of their love and struggle against hard life. It was said that the poverties life is ,the firmer and truer love is." Actually, they'd given the very best they had out of love.
Love has nothing to do with money, possession or status. It's consideration, tolerance and respect. It's giving one's best to the other even it means sacrifice. It's affection which connects two persons' hearts, and it's reinforced by adversities. Nothing did they have, at least they possess love. Never give up as long as love exists. From" The Gift of the Magi", from Jim and Della, I have learned a lot about love, life and hope.。
