第二节:阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

Warner Brothers has announced more Harry Potter movies are on the way. The studio is working with Potter author J. K. Rowling to create a new franchise (特需经营权) of movies based on “Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them”, which is a fictitious textbook in the Harry Potter world. The story will also follow the adventures of the book’s author, Newt Scamander. Rowling, for the first time, will pen the screenplay.

It comes as no surprise that Warner Brothers is trying to keep the Harry Potter franchise going. The films alone have earned $7.7 billion at the box office. The franchise has probably almost doubled those earnings on home video and TV sales. Then there’s the many Harry Potter products that fans still snatch up.

But at s ome point, Harry Potter could seem old hat and that’s not something Warner Bro thers wants to see happen. So executives had three choices: restart the franchise, come up with continuations or spin off part of the Potter world into a new movie.

Without books to support the new stories, the upcoming movies could be a tougher sell for Warner Brother s. Harry and friends won’t appear at all in the new movies which will be set in New York 70 years before Harry Potter heads to Hogwarts.

The new stories will also net video games, products and enhance Rowling’s website.

Here’s Rowling on the upcoming franchise:

It all started when Warner Brother s came to me with the suggestion of turning “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” into a film. I thought it was a fun ide a, but the idea of seeing Newt Scamander, the supposed author of “Fantastic Beasts”, realized by another writer was difficult. Having lived for so long in my fictional universe, I feel very protective of it and I already knew a lot about Newt. As Harry Potter fans will know, I liked him so much that I even married his grandson, Rolf, to one of my favourite characters from the Harry Potter series, Luna Lovegood.

As I considered Warners’ proposal, an idea took shape that I couldn’t get rid of. That is how I

could express my own idea for a film to Warner Brothers.

Although it will be set in the worldwide community of wizards (巫师) where I was so happy for sevente en years, it is neither a previous work nor a continuation to the Harry Potter series, but an extension of the wizarding world. The laws and customs of the hidden magical society will be familiar to anyone who has rea d the Harry Potter books or seen the films, but Newt’s story will start in New York, seventy years before Harry gets underway. (456words)

21.The phrase “snatch up” in Paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to “_____”.

A. rush to purchase

B. give up reluctantly

C. make profits from

D. take away by force

22.What made Rowling accept Warner Brothers’ proposal?

A. Her eagerness to try writing for the screenplay.

B. Her unwillingness to see others write the story.

C. The attraction of earning more at the box office.

D. The film company’s promise to enhance her website.

23. What is the passage mainly about?

A. Warner Brothers’ expanded partnership with Harry Potter author.

B. Warner Brothers’ success and development in Harry Potter series.

C. Rowling’s view on the upcoming franchise of Harry Potter movies.

D. Rowling’s creative ideas for the cooperation with Warner Brothers.

Jeff, like me, is a writer, a speaker, and the head of a cons ulting company. As far as I can tell, he’s professional, well respected, capable, honest, and has a popular following. Someone we both know has asked us to cooperate on a project and there’s clearly a mutual benefit to our working together. It all sounds g reat except for one thing: I don’t like Jeff. I mentioned that to the person who wants us to work together. She told me, essentially, to get over it. “You don’t have to like him,” she said, “but you’d be smart to work with him.”

The typical advice you hear about working with people you don’t like is simply to just conduct whatever business you need to with them and move on. In other words, smile and bear it. But I have found that almost impossible to do. The people we don’t like drive us crazy and we waste a great amount of time complaining about them, or stressing about a conversation we need to have with them.

And that’s not the worst of it. The deeper problem is that if you don’t like someone, chances are they know it, which will cause them not to like you. And if you think working with someone you don’t like is hard, try working with someone who doesn’t like you.

It’s simple, really. According to research, the more people like you, the easier, more productive, and more profitable, your life will be; the people you don’t get along with will find ways to bother you — even if you smile and bear it.

So if smiling and bearing is a losing strategy, what’s the alternative?

Consider, for a moment, the reason you don’t like someone. Maybe you think they have some character weakness or disagreeable quality that bothers you. Like my view of Jeff as self-serving, self-centered and self-satisfied.

Now —and here’s the hard part —think about whether you can discover that disagreeable quality in yourself. You really d on’t like that part of yourself, right? You wish you could distance yourself from that side of you. Just like you wish you could distance yourself from that disliked person.

In other words, chances are, the reason you can’t stand that person in the first place, is that they focus you on what you can’t stand about yourself.

Suddenly, working with people you don’t like becomes a lot more interesting. Because getting to know them better, and accepting the parts of them you don’t like, is actually getting to k now yourself better and accepting the parts of yourself you don’t like.

So the way to overcome your dislike of someone else? Overcome your dislike of yourself.

Relax. He is the same little boy you loved yesterday. I smiled trying to hold back the tears. “No he isn’t. Yesterday I dreamed he would be an astronaut. Today I am hoping he will learn to talk.”

It was like some sort of unexpected joke. I could still recall the day that determined my fate. It was October in Ottawa and the summer breezes had given way to the autumn rainfall of leaves. The snow would begin soon. My casually mentioning Wyatt’s behavior to Dr. Martin aroused his worries.

He started asking me questions about Wyatt’s activities, speech pattern and emotions. I still see clearly in my mind the cleanness of the room and all its belongings when the doctor turned to me and said, “He almost sounds autistic(自闭的).”

I couldn’t bear that picture in my mind. I had to run to get away from this all too painful place that was telling me what was to be my child’s life — being strange.

I could not r emember how many times I told myself, “This is normal. He is a little boy who is not talking yet,” when my asking questions met with his blank-eyed response in a restaurant; how many times I would say, “He loves to play on his own for hours at a time and he never gets into trouble,” when Wyatt was playing games that no one else could think of, let alone join in while other boys in the park were playing together or in small groups. My life was changing direction. So was Wyatt’s.

I started to hide Wyatt from my friends and neighbors especially from good friends. It was too painful to let others know about my boy acting strange.

It was a Thursday afternoon and I found one half of a great pair of kitchen scissors was missing, which was unbelievably sharp. I knew Wyatt had taken the missing blade(刀片).

“Wyatt,” I began as patiently as I could, “Do you see this?” I held up the blade. “Do you know what this is?”

Wyatt put a bunch of fruit loops in his mouth. No response.

“Wyatt!” I forced eye contact with him. “Where is the other blade? See this!” I showed him the half pair.

He smiled big. Ate fruit loops. Turned the TV on and off. Still no response.

I didn’t know what to do. It was really hard. “Wyatt,” I tried once more, “Mommy wants these scissors. Can you go get them for Mommy? It will mak e Mommy so happy if you do that.”

“Watch TV.” Wyatt asked as he slid down from his kitchen stool and ran off, leaving me shaking my head and wondering in exactly which way this situation was going to end badly.

Five minutes later, I turned my head to see Wyatt coming downstairs with his favorite doll in one hand, the missing half pair of kitchen scissors in the other. I immediately ran over and took it from him.

“Wyatt!” I hugged him. “Thank you for bringing me the scissors! Good job! You did it! Thes e scissors need to stay in the kitchen. These are Mommy’s scissors!”

Wyatt laughed, looked me straight in the eye and said, “Mommy so happy!”

I came close to tears. A realization dawned on me that he was the best gift I had ever gotten even though he was not as normal as other children. And why did I hide him from others as if he were some dark and terrible secret? No! He was my pride. It was a long, hard battle to get him to this point, expressing his wants and needs without turning to violence in frustration. With love and patience I have found the beautiful, happy boy who would teach me more about life.

And that is the solution.(640words)

Researchers in the psychology department at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) have discovered a major difference in the way men and women respond to stress. This difference may explain why men are more likely to suffer from stress-related disorders.

Until now, psychological research has maintained that both men and women have the same “fight-or-flight” reac tion to stress. In other words, individuals either react with aggressive behavior, such as verbal or physical conflict (“fight”), or they react by withdrawing from the stressful situation (“flight”). However, the UCLA research team found that men and women have quite different biological and behavioral responses to stress. While men often react to stress in the fight-or-flight response, women often have another kind of reaction which could be called “tend and befriend.” That is, they often react to stressfu l conditions by protecting and nurturing their young (“tend”), and by looking for social contact and support from others—especially other females (“befriend”).Scientists have long known that in the fight-or-flight reaction to stress, an important role is played by certain hormones (激素) released by the body. The UCLA research team suggests that the female tend-or-befriend response is also based on a hormone. This hormone, called oxytocin, has been studied in the context of childbirth, but now it is being studied for its role in the response of both men and women to stress. The principal investigator, Dr. Shelley E. Taylor, explained that “animals and people with high levels of oxytocin are calmer, more relaxed, more social, and less anxious.” While men also secrete (分泌) oxytocin, its effects are reduced by male hormones.

In terms of everyday behavior, the UCLA study found that women are far more likely than men to seek social contact when they are feeling stressed. They may phone relatives or friends, or ask directions if they are lost.

The study also showed how fathers and mothers responded differently when they came home to

their family after a stressful day at work. The typical father wanted to be left alone to enjoy some peace and quiet. For a typical mother, coping with a bad day at work meant focusing her attention on her children and their needs.

The differences in responding to stress may explain the fact that women have lower frequency of stress-related disorders such as high blood pressure or aggressive behavior. The tend-and-befriend regulatory (调节的) system may protect women against stress, and this may explain why women on average live longer than men.(424words)

32. The UCLA study shows that in response to stress, men are more likely than women to ________.

A. turn to friends for help

B. solve a conflict calmly

C. find an escape from reality

D. seek comfort from children

33. Which of the following is true about oxytocin according to the passage?

A. Men have the same level of oxytocin as women do.

B. Oxytocin used to be studied in both men and women.

C. Both animals and people have high levels of oxytocin.

D. Oxytocin has more of an effect on women than on men.

34. What can be learned from the passage?

A. Male hormones help build up the body's resistance to stress.

B. In a family a mother cares more about children than a father does.

C. Biological differences lead to different behavioral responses to stress.

D. The UCLA study was designed to confirm previous research findings.

35. Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?

A. How men and women get over stress

B. How men and women suffer from stress

C. How researchers overcome stress problems

D. How researchers handle stress-related disorders

2019届上海高三英语二模汇编--阅读B篇(解析版)

2019届高三英语二模汇编——阅读B篇 1、2019黄浦二模 Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read. (B) ● Stocky, slow-moving whale, rarely grows beyond 15 metres in length ● Flippers are a third of body length; variable dorsal fin size and shape; saw-toothed trailing edge on flukes, often raised when diving ● Bumpy tubercles on top of head ● Body colour is dark brown to black; often extensive white on flippers and underside of body and flukes; such patterns enable individual recognition ● Bushy blow, occasionally V-shaped ● 270-400 olive baleen plates Humpback whales belong to the rorqual (groove-throated) family, which includes fin, sei, Bryde’s, minke and blue whales. The big family migrate between winter tropical breeding areas (North West Shelf, Great Barrier Reef, New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Fiii, Tonga) and summer Antarctic feeding areas. Once common in New Zealand waters, humpbacks are now rarely seen and may migrate further offshore. Males compete for mates either by physical fight or by song. Females give birth to their young every two to three years; some non-breeding females probably remain in the southern waters during winter. Young humpback whales return to their area of birth but in later life some wander between breeding areas. Humpbacks eat small shrimps and other schooling prey, such as fish, forming small, cooperative groups of two to three individuals to feed. Similar species: Easily identifiable due to a ‘hump’ back when submerging, but at a distance may be confused with other species that raise their flukes when diving, such as sperm, right and blue whales. Protection status:Recovering well from past whaling and now numerous in some former migration and aggregation areas, rarely seen in others.

高三英语课外阅读love is the best legacy

As a young man, A1 was a skilled artist, a potter. He had a wife and two fine sons. One night, his older son developed a severe stomachache. Thinking it was only some common intestinal disorder, neither A1 nor his wife took the condition very seriously. But the malady was actually acute appendicitis and the boy died suddenly that night. Knowing the death could have been prevented if he had only realized the seriousness of the situation, A1‘s emotional health deteriorated under the enormous burden of his guilt. To make matters worse his wife left him a short time later, leaving him alone with his 6-year-old younger son. The hurt and pain of the two situations were more than A1 could handle, and he turned to alcohol to help him cope. In time A1 became an alcoholic. As the alcoholism progressed, A1 began to lose everything he possessed – his home, his land, his art objects, everything. Eventually A1 died alone in a San Francisco motel room. When I heart of A1‘s death, I reacted with the same disdain the world sh ows for one who ends his life with nothing material to show for it. ―What a complete failure!‖ I thought. ―what a totally wasted life!‖ As time went by, I began to re-evaluate my earlier harsh judgment. You see, I knew A1‘s now adult son, Ernie. He is one of the kindest, most caring, most loving men I have ever known. I watched Ernie with his children and saw the free flow of love between them. I knew that kindness and caring had to come from somewhere. I hadn‘t heard Ernie talk much about his father. It is so hard to defend an alcoholic. One day I worked up my courage to ask him. ―I‘m really puzzled by soothing‖, I said. ―I know your father was basically the only one to raise you. What on earth did he do that you became such a special person?‖ Ernie sat qu ietly and reflected for a few moments. Then he said, ―From my earliest memories as a child until I left home at 18, A1 came into my room every night, gave me a kiss and said, ?I love you, son.‘‖ Tears came to my eyes as I realized what a fool I had been to judge A1 as a failure. He had not left any material possession behind. But he had been a kind loving father, and he left one of the finest, most giving men I have ever known. 1. Al's elder son probably died of acute appendicitis due to ________ according to this passage. A. lack of care and nutrition B. the couple's carelessness C. serious stomachache D. too much alcohol 2. What can we know from the second paragraph? A. Given more attention, the boy could be saved. B. Al eventually became an alcoholic without any reason. C. Al's wife was also dead because of her elder son's death. D. The boy's death couldn't be avoided even if he was given more attention. 3. How did the writer evaluate Al's son, Ernie in this passage? A. Kind. B. Caring. C. Loving. D. All above. 4. The purpose of writing this passage for the writer is to show ________. A. we should reevaluate Al's meaning of life B. love is the best heritage in our life C. Ernie is a kind, caring and loving son D. Al's death is a totally wasted life as well

1 Artificial Intelligence: Friend And Foe[M] 人工智能:亦敌亦友 来源: FORBES DEC. 26 2017 1 Artificial intelligence has a huge role to play on both sides of the cybersecurity equation. The industry faces a protracted and severe skill shortage. AI can perform both rote management tasks more quickly and efficiently, without getting bored or distracted. It can also learn new and better security practices from the evolving digital framework it inhabits. (1) In ou r world whe re conne cti vit y has far ou tpac ed securit y, int ell igent a gents that ca n h eal and defend themse lves are invaluabl e all ies. Machine learning has already proven effective in sandbox environments at exploring potential vulnerabilities and devising defenses.、 2 But cybercriminals are developing their own AI, and are unlikely to do so ethically. In legitimate lab settings, AI can be carefully monitored and trained for years to be predictable and reliable. (2)Cybercriminals are less likely to avoid these potentially dangerous side effects, favoring speed over safet y. Malware rings resembling intelligent swarms of (一大群) angry bees are already starting to appear, weaponizing devices against their owners. 3 It is the rise of the hive (数据仓库工具) . Today the term botnet refers to automated, zombie-like devices that are remotely programmed to target other vulnerable systems with malware (恶意软件) , or to infect them via blunt-force attacks, such as denial of service. Botnets are dangerous and account for billions of unauthorized network communications every quarter. The hivenet, however, is much more frightening because each unit of the hivenet, a swarmbot, will itself be powered by AI. (3)Swarmbots will be able to make autonomous decisions without relying on a botnet herder and join togethe r int o larger autonom ous thi nking networks. The potential for hivenet damage is substantially greater than anything we have faced from already-potent botnets. 4 (4)That’s why one of the most serious threats we face in 2018 and beyond is malware with the capa cit y to learn and gro w throu gh it s own su cces ses . Polymorphic (多态的) malware with pre-coded algorithms (算法) designed to subvert (破坏) countermeasures and screens is already a reality. But that approach simply generates millions of slight variations on the same theme. Nextgen Al- generated malware will be aware and capable of adapting itself. 5 (5)Instead of sim pl y f oll owing a set of pre -p rogramm ed inst ructi ons, it will select targets of opportuni t y, assess th eir weakness es, dev elo p a plan of att ack and cover it s tracks. And it will make intelligent decisions about what information to exfiltrate, and when. (6) In sh ort , tom orrow’s A I

高三英语美文阅读

美文阅读 1:生命的旅程
Do not undermine your worth by comparing yourself with others. It is because we are different that each of us is special. Do not set your goals by what other people think important. Only you know what is best for you. Do not take for granted the things closest to your heart. Cling to them as you would your life, for without them, life is meaningless. Do not let your life slip through your fingers by living in the past nor for the future. By living your life one day at a time, you live all of the days of your life. Do not give up when you still have something to give. Nothing is really over until the moment you stop trying. It is a fragile thread that binds us to each other. Do not be afraid to encounter risks. It is by taking chances that we learn how to be brave. Do not shut love out of your life by saying it is impossible to find. The quickest way to receive love is to give love. The fastest way to lose love is to hold it too tightly. In addition, the best way to keep love is to give it wings. Do not dismiss your dreams. To be without dreams is to be without hope. To be without hope is to be without purpose. Do not run through life so fast that you forget not only where you have been, but also where you are going. Life is not a race, but a journey to be savored each step of the way.
"A friend walks in when the rest of the world walks out." A Forever Friend Sometimes in life, you find a special friend: someone who changes your life just by being part of it; someone who makes you laugh until you can't stop; someone who makes you believe that there really is good in the world; someone who convinces you that there really is an unlocked door just waiting for you to open it. This is forever friendship. When you're down, and the world seems dark and empty, your forever friend lifts you up in spirits and makes that dark and empty world suddenly seem bright and full. Your forever friend gets you through the hard times, the sad times, and the confused times. If you turn and walk away, your forever friend follows. If you lose your way, your forever friend guides you and cheers you on. Your forever friend holds your hand and tells you that everything is going to be okay. And if you find such a friend, you feel happy and complete. Because you need not worry, you have a forever friend for life, and forever has no end.
