AMysteries of the Deep1. The Bermuda Triangle, also known as the Devil's Triangle, is a region in the western part of the North Atlantic Ocean where ships and airplanes have disappeared under mysterious circumstances. Some people believe that supernatural or extraterrestrial forces are responsible for these disappearances. However, scientists have provided logical explanations for most of the incidents, such as bad weather or human error.2. The Loch Ness Monster is one of the most famous legends in Scotland. According to the local folklore, an aquatic creature similar to a large dinosaur resides in Loch Ness. Numerous sightings and photographs of the monster have been reported, but none has been proven conclusive. Most experts believe that these sightings are either hoaxes or misidentifications of common animals.3. Stonehenge is a prehistoric monument located in England. It consists of a ring of standing stones, each around 13 feet high, 7 feet wide, and weighing over 25 tons. The purpose of Stonehenge remains unknown, and various theories have been proposed over the years. While some people believe it to be a religious temple or a burial ground, others think it was used for astronomical observations.4. The Nazca Lines are a collection of giant geoglyphs (地图绘在地面上) located in southern Peru. These ancient drawings are so large that they can only be fully seen from the air. The purpose behind these lines is still a topic of debate among researchers. Some theories suggest that they were used for religious rituals, while others propose that they served as markers for underground water sources.5. The Roswell UFO incident of 1947 is one of the most well-known UFO stories in the world. In Roswell, New Mexico, an unidentified object crashed on a ranch, sparking rumors of a crashed alien spacecraft. The US military initially stated that it was a weather balloon, but later declared it to be a nuclear test surveillance balloon. However, many people continue to believe in the existence of extraterrestrial life.21. I put a small set of Tinkertoys infront of each student, and said:”Make something out of the Tinkertoys. You have45 minutes today - and 45minutes each day for the rest of the week.”A few students hesitated to start. They waited to see the rest of the class would do. Several others checked theinstructions and made something according to one of the model plans provided.Another group built something out of their own imaginations.Once I had a boy who workedexperimentally with Tinkertoys in his free time. His constructions filled ashelf in the art classroom and a good part of his bedroom at home. I wasdelighted at the presence of such a student. Here was an exceptionally creativemind at work. His presence meant that I had an unexpected teaching assistant inclass whose creativity would infect(感染) other students.Encouraging this kind of thinkinghas a downside. I ran the risk of losing those students who had a differentstyle of thinking. Without fail one would declare, ”But I’m just not creative.”“Do you dream at night when you’reasleep?”“Oh, sure.”“So tell me one of your mostinteresting dreams.”The student would tell something wildly imaginative.Flying in the sky or in a time machine or growing three heads. “That’s prettycreative. Who does that for you?”“Nobody. I do it.”“Really-at night, when you’reasleep?”“Sure.”zxx.k“Try doing it in the daytime, inclass, okay?”5. Now, the website turns the page on the traditional idea of a book group.Members go on the site and register the books theyown and would like to share. BookCrossing provides an identification number tostick inside the book. Then the person leaves it in a public place, hoping thatthe book will have an adventure, traveling far and wide with each new readerwho finds it.Bruce Pederson, the managingdirector of BookCrossing, says, “The two things that change your life are thepeople you meet and books you read. BookCrossing combines both.”Members leave books on parkbenches and buses, in train stations and coffee shops. Whoever finds their bookwill go to the site and record where they found it.People who find a book can alsoleave a journal entry describing what they thought of it. In fact, theywere shot from 1914 through 1916, most of them after a disastrous shipwreck(海滩), by a cameraman who had noreasonable expectation of survival. Many of the images were stored in an icechest, under freezing water, in the damaged wooden ship.Theship was the Endurance, a small, tight, Norwegian-builtthree-master that wasintended to take Sir Ernest Shackleton and a small crew of seamen andscientists, 27 men in all, to the southernmost shore of Antarctica’s WeddellSea. From that point Shackleton wanted to force a passage by dog sled(雪橇) across the continent. Thejourney wasintended to achieve more than what Captain Robert Falcon Scott haddone. Captain Scott had reached the South Pole early in 1912 but had died withhis four companions on the march back.Aswriter Caroline Alexander makes clear in her forceful andwell-researched storyThe Endurance, adventuring was even then a thoroughly commercial effort.Scott’s last journey, completed as be lay in a tent dying of cold and hunger, caught the world’s imagination, and a film made in his honor drew crowds.Shackleton, a onetime British merchant-navy officer who had got to within 100miles of the South Pole in 1908, started a business before his 1914 voyage tomake money from movie and still photography. Frank Hurley, a confident andgifted Australian photographer who knew the Antarctic, was hired to make theimages, most of which have never before been published.13.
