Without him, the world might still be a dark place. However, the electric light was not his only invention. He also invented the phonograph, the motion picture camera, and over 1,200 other things. About every two weeks he created something new.Thomas A. Edison was born in Milan, Ohio, on February 11, 1847. His family moved to Port Huron, Michigan, when he was seven years old. Surprisingly, he attended school for only two months. His mother, a former teacher, taught him a few things, but Thomas was mostly self-educated. His natural curiosity led him to start experimenting at a young age with electrical and mechanical things at home. When he was 12 years old, he got his first job. He became a newsboy on a train thatran between Port Huron and Detroit. He set up a laboratory in a baggage car of the train so that he could continue his experiments in his spare time. Unfortunately, his first work experience did not end well. Thomas was fired when he accidentally set fire to the floor of the baggage car.Thomas then worked for five years as a telegraph operator, but he continued to spend much of his time on the job conducting experiments. He got his first patent in 1868 for a vote recorder run by electricity. However, the vote recorder was not a success. In 1870, he sold another invention, a stock-ticker, for $40,000. A stock-ticker is a machine that automatically prints stock prices on a tape. He was then able to build his first shop in Newark, New Jersey.Thomas Edison was totally deaf in one ear and hard of hearing in the other, but thought of his deafness as a blessing in many ways. It kept conversations short, so that he could have more time for work. He called himself a "two-shift man" because he worked 16 out of every 24 hours. Sometimes he worked so intensely that his wife had to remind him to sleep and eat.Thomas Edison died at the age of 84 on October 18, 1931, at his estate in West Orange, New Jersey. He left numerous inventions that improved the quality of life all over the world.1. We started to learn language when we were born. However, people are used to speaking their native language, so immigrants are having many problems between the first generation and the second generation because they don't have the same native language. Also, the second generation is losing their identity. Especially in America, there are many immigrants that came from different countries to succeed in the States. Because they suffer in lots of areas such as getting a job and trying to speak English, they want their children to speak English, not only at school, but also at home in order to be more successful. Because of this situation, their children are losing their ethnic identity and, even more, they are ignoring their parents whose English is not very good. For example, my aunt, who has been living in Chicago for fifteen years, has three children and they were all born in the States. The eighteen year old daughter speaks English as a native language and she speaks Korean very well too. She has no problems talking with her parents, but she still doesn't understand Korean jokes, and there are sometimes misunderstandings. The second daughter is fourteen years old, and shedoesn't want to speak Korean. My aunt often gets upset with her because she is very Americanized and they cannot understand each other. Even when my aunt punishes her, this daughter does not understand what my aunt is talking about. I felt sympathy for my aunt whenever my fourteen year old cousin said, "Mom, what is your problem?" The third child is a twelve year old son. He speaks English to his parents and my aunt speaks Korean to him as she does to the second daughter. He also has a problem communicating with his parents. My aunt is trying to teach him to speak both languages very well, but it is very hard for him because he speaks English all day and does not understand why he should learn to speak Korean.1.What do you think this article will be about?A. Learning a second language.B. Immigrants who become sick in the U.SC. Language and its effect on the identity of immigrants.D. Schools attended by immigrants to the U.S.2. Which of these statements is NOT true according to the first paragraph of the article?A. Second generation immigrants are usually eager to learn their parents' nativelanguage.B. It is often hard for first and second generation family members to communicate witheach other.C. Because second generation immigrant children often speak only English, they maylose their ethnic identity.D. Sometimes second generation immigrant children ignore their parents because oflanguage differences.3. Which of the following is NOT true about the 18 year old daughter?A. She was born in the U.S.B. She speaks only English very well; her Korean is poor.C. She gets along better with her parents than her brother and other sister do.D. She doesn't understand Korean jokes well.4. Which is NOT a reason that the 14 year old sister has problems with her mother?A. She doesn't want to speak Korean.B. She doesn't love her mother.C. She is very Americanized.D. She does not understand her mother when she gets punished.5. To whom does the mother speak Korean?A. Her oldest daughter only.B. All of her children.C. Her two daughters only.D. Only to her son.4Dear Assemblywoman(女议员)Weiner:I think the state assembly should pass a law prohibiting people from letting their cats run free. As a member of the assembly, you can introduce any bill you wish. There are three important reasons why you should propose this one:1. When cats run free, they lurk(潜伏)under bird feeders and kill defenseless songbirds. Every time I put up a bird feeder, I find at least one dead bird in my yard. I'm sure all those birds were killed by cats. And cats don't even eat the birds they kill. Songbirds belong in our parks and gardens, but cats don't. Dogs never kill poor little birds.2. Cats are always using my garden as a litter box. This is not only disgusting but also highly unsanitary. Children can't play in the garden when cats have been there. Dogs are usually kept on leashes, so they can't soil private property. Cats spread diseases when they use a garden as a litter box, so I think this should be stopped.3. Finally, letting cats run free is not even good for the cats. Sure, most cats want to go outside. Their owners like to give them everything they want, just like spoiled children. But cats that stay indoors live much longer than cats that run free. Cats are always getting hit by cars when they're allowed to run free.I'm sure that if you think about all the things I've said, you will work to pass a law prohibiting cats from running free. This will improve our environment, make our parks and gardens cleaner, and even help the cats themselves by making them live longer.Thank you for your attention to my request. And did I mention that I really love dogs? Idon't know why anyone would want a cat in the first place.Sincerely,Eve Harringford1.The writer's purpose in writing this letter is to ______.A. persuade the assemblywomanB. inform the assemblywoman of somethingC. entertain the readersD. tell a story2. Which sentence in paragraph 1 of the list is an invalid argument?A. When cats run free, they lurk under bird feeders and kill defenseless songbirds.B. And cats don't even eat the birds they kill.C. I'm sure all those birds were killed by cats.D. Songbirds belong in our parks and gardens, but cats don't.3. Which statement from the passage is a fact?A. The state assembly should pass a law prohibiting people from letting their cats run free.B. As a member of the assembly, you can introduce any bill you wish.C. Songbirds belong in our parks and gardens, but cats don't.D. Their owners like to give them everything they want, just like spoiled children.4. When an electric current passes through water in a process called electrolysis (电解),bubbles of gas appear and rise through the liquid. Superficially (表面地),the two events appear same.If the gas from the boiling water is examined, its properties are found to be the same as those of the water,Thus,if the steam is cooled to room temperature,a liquid is formed which is indistinguishable from the original water. When, however, the gas from the electrolysis equipment is cooled to room temperature,it remains a gas rather than becoming a liquid. Nor will it,at zero degrees centigrade or below, turn to solid,as will the gas from boiling water,These two processes, boiling and electrolysis, have clearly resulted in products with quite different properties. In boiling, the gas does not represent a new substance, but only a different state of the original substance. Electrolysis,on the other hand, has generated a product which is a new substance,or possibly a mixture of new substances. A change in state as represented by going from a liquid to a gas without the production of new substances in called a “physical change”。

(2 points for each, altogether 30 points) Directions:There are three passages followed by questions. Beneath each question there are four choices respectively marked by letters A, B, C and D. Choose the right answer for each question. Write your answers on the answer sheet.Passage 1Billy is 14 years old and in the ninth grade. He has a part-time job which gets him up every morning at 5 o'clock. He is a newspaper boy. Each morning,Billy leaves the house at 5:15 to go to the corner, where the newspapers are. The newspapers are delivered to the corner by truck at midnight. He always takes a wagon to carry them.In the winter, it is still dark when he gets up,but during the rest of the year it is light. Billy must deliver the newspapers to the houses of people on his route in all kinds of weather. He tries to put each paper on the porch(门廊)where it will be protected from wind and rain or snow. His customers think he does a good job. Sometimes they give him tips(小费).Billy earns about $ 70 per month, and he is saving some of the money to go to college. He spends the rest on records and clothes. Once a month,he has to collect money from his customers. Since many of them work during the day,Billy has to collect the money at night. Sometimes, when Billy is sick, his brother has to deliver the newspapers. Once,Billy's father had to help. Billy has seventy customers now,but he hopes to get more soon. Someday,if he gets more customers,Billy might win a prize for being an outstanding(突出的)newspaper boy. He wants to win a trip to Europe, but he will be happy if he wins a new bicycle.31. Keeping a part-time job tells us that Billy ___D___.[A] has to make a living by himself[B] can not get any support from his family[C] has to pay for his school tuition[D] is independent and self-confident32. He did his work ____A__.[A] perfectly well [B] twice a week[C] only for fun [D] to support his family33. The prize for an outstanding newspaper boy is __D____.[A] a trip to Europe [B] a new bicycle[C] a tip [D] A or BPassage 2Friends or contemporaries(同龄人)are a great influence on the actions, thoughts, and words of young people. This influence, known as peer pressure,is quite common among children. Why are children so easily affected by what their peers do,think,or say? Most of us,children included, feel a strong need to be liked by others. We seek acceptance and friendship. In order to gain them,we act like our friends, and listen to their advice, whether or not it is helpful. Some of us even begin to think like our friends, sometimes at the expense of our own beliefs and values. An example that comes to mind is the young person who gets involved with drugs because his peer group is experimenting with them. Parents may try to exert pressure to keep him away from drugs, but frequently peer pressure is too great. This conflict between being your own person and,at the same time, responding to the pressures of a group remains a problem for young people.36. The passage mainly talks about ___B__.[A] friendship[B] peer pressure[C] conflicts between young people and their parents[D] problems for young people37. In the third sentence of the second paragraph,"them" refers to ___C__.[A] children[B] strong needs to be liked by others[C] acceptance and friendship[D] our friends' advice38. "being your own person” in the last sentence most probably means __A___.[A] acting according to your own beliefs and values[B] trying not to tell any lie[C] keeping yourself away from drugs[D] having enough self-confidence39. The second paragraph focuses on __D___.[A] what peer pressure is[B] how young people start to take drugs[C] what parents should do for their children[D] why young people are easily influenced by their peers40. Who can influence us on the actions, thoughts? ___D__.[A] Teacher[B] Father[C] Mother[D] Friends and contemporariesPassage 3Background music may seem harmless, but it can have a powerful effect on those who hear it. Recorded background music first found its way into factories, shops and restaurants in the US. But it soon spread to other parts of the world. Now it is becoming increasingly difficult to go shopping or eat a meal without listening to music. To begin with,"muzak"(音乐广播网)was intended simply to create a soothing atmosphere. Recently, however,it's become big business - thanks in part to recent research. Dr. Ronald Milliman,an American marketing expert, has shown that music can boost(促进)sales or increase factory production by as much as a third. But,it has to be light music. A fast one has no effect at all on sales. Slow music can increase receipts by 38%. This is probably because shoppers slow down and have more opportunity to spot items they like to buy. Yet,slow music isn't always answer. liman found, for example, that in restaurants slow music meant customers took longer to eat their meals, which reduced overall sales. So restaurant owners might be well advised to play up-tempo music to keep the customers moving - unless of course, the resulting indigestion leads to complaints!41. The reason why background music is so popular is that ___C___.[A] it is harmless everywhere[B] it can boost sales in all places[C] it can help to create a soothing atmosphere[D] it can help to have more meals42. Background music means __D____.[A] light music[B] slow music[C] fast music[D] the music you are listening to while you are doing something43. Restaurant owners complain about background music because ___D___.[A] it results in indigestion [B] it keeps customers moving[C] it increases their sales [D] it decreases their sales44. The word "up-tempo music"(para. 3 the last line but two) probably means __C____.[A] slow music [B] light music[C] fast music [D] classical music45. According to this passage, we learned that ___D___[A] Dr. Milliman made background music.[B] background music spread to the world by Dr. Milliman.[C] Dr. Milliman found fast music meant customers took longer to eat.[D] background music can have a powerful effect on some people.IV.
