真题演练(一)[2017·江苏]Population ChangeWhy is the world’s population growing? The answer is not what you might think. The reason for the explosion is not that people have been reproducing like rabbits, but that people have stopped dropping dead like flies. In 1900,people died at the average age of 30.By 2000 the average age was 65.But while increasing health was a typical feature of the 20th century, declining birth rate could be a defining one of the 21st.Statistics show that the average number of births per woman has fallen from 4.9 in the early 1960s to 2.5 nowadays.Furthermore, around 50% of the world’s population live in regions where the figure is now below the replacement level (i.e.2.1 births per woman) and almost all developed nations are experiencing sub-replacement birth rate. You might think that developing nations would make up the loss(especially since 80% of the world’s people now live in such nations),but you’d be wrong.Declining birth rate is a major problem in many developing regions too, which might cause catastrophic global shortages of work force within a few decades.A great decline in young work force is likely to occur in China, for instance. What does it imply?First,China needs to undergo rapid economic development before a population decline hits the country.Second,if other factors such as technology remain constant, economic growth and material expectations will fall well below recent standards and this could invite trouble.Russia is another country with population problems that could break its economic promise.Since 1992 the number of people dying has been bigger than that of those being born by a massive 50%.Indeed official figures suggest the country has shrunk by 5% since 1993 and people in Russia live a shorter life now than those in 1961.Why is this occurring?Nobody is quite sure, but poor diet and above all long-time alcoholism have much to do with it.If current trends don’t bend,Russia’s population will be about the size of Yemen’s by the year 2050.In the north of India, the population is booming due to high birth rates, but in the south, where most economic development is taking place, birth rate is falling rapidly. In a further twist, birth rate is highest in poorly educated rural areas and lowest in highly educated urban areas. In total,25% of India’s working-age population has no education. In 2030,a sixth of the country’s potential work force could be totally uneducated. One solution is obviously to import foreign workers via immigration. As for the USA,it is almost unique among developed nations in having a population that is expected to grow by 20% from 2010-2030.Moreover,the USA has a track record of successfully accepting immigrants. As a result it’s likely to see a rise in the size of its working-age population and to witness strong economic growth over the longer term.71.答案lower解析根据第一段最后一句“....declining birth rate could be a defining one of the 21st.”

题型四任务型阅读试卷一(苏州市2016~2017学年第一学期高三期中调研试卷)Between 1938 and 1942,researchers in Boston were busy getting down to a study of adolescent boys and their family relationships. Some 60 years later, different researchers followed up with the participants and found that those raised in warmer family environments were more securely attached to their partners in the later years of life.In a study published last week in Psychological Science,co authors Robert Waldinger, a psychiatrist at Harvard Medical School, and Marc Schulz,a psychologist at Bryn Mawr College, combined many decades of data previously gathered on a group of men with data they recently collected on the same men to offer a unique long term thinking on the connection between early childhood environment, how men regulate emotions in middle age and the security of their attachments in close relationships late in life.Security of attachment, a concept that first appeared in the 1960s,is the idea that because we are helpless for large portions of our childhood and old age we need to be good at forming attachments with others and keeping them around to take care of us. “Each person has certain people who are their main attachment figures,”Waldinger says-in other words, the person you would “call in the middle of the night if you were terrified and needed someone to come over.”We start forming attachments at a very young age and continue to do so throughout our lives.Waldinger and Schulz determined that regardless of socio economic standing the men raised inwarmer family environments used more adaptive strategies to manage their negative emotions in midlife, and were also more securely attached to their partners late in life。

模拟演练(四)A(2017·苏北四市摸底考试)Among the natural creatures that can present a threat to people in rural areas of Mexico, one of the most productive is the scorpion(蝎子).These relatives of spiders kill dozens of people each year and injure thousands more. However, scorpions have become a part of the local culture and tradition. In the Durango city main market, scorpions are in evidence at every turn. There are books, key chains and lamps decorated with dead scorpions. There are scorpion images on T-shirts and hats and there are even candies shaped like scorpions. The whole place seems to be filled with the crawling creature. In one corner of the market,Chelo Garcia even sells live scorpions. She says she has experienced two scorpion stings(蛰) in the recent years and that nothing happened. She says that if a person has no symptoms of poisoning with 30 minutes of the stinging,it is likely that nothing bad will result. She says some scorpions have little or no poison and so luck plays a big part.It is hard to explain why people come to MsGarcia’s store to buy live ones, but she does a good business. She often reaches down through the top of the glass cage to catch one of the scorpions to show her customers. She holds them by the tail, where the barbed stinger(刺针) is located,so that she is safefrom attack. In the crowded market, many people pass by Ms Garcia’s store to look at the crawling creatures and to relate their own stories of encounters with the scorpions. One old woman says she nearly died when she was a girl of 18 years old and has been afraid of scorpions ever since. She said her tongue became numb(麻木的) and her throat began to swell shut, common symptoms of the scorpion poison. She says she survived because God protected her.Every year in Mexico about 200,000 people are stung by scorpions. The number of annual deaths was nearly 300,till 2015,but a public health campaign and the widespread availability of anti-poison have cut the number of deaths to less than 100 a year. The state of Durango alone accounts for ten percent of all the scorpion stings in Mexico each year. While the scorpion may be regarded as disgusting and horrible by many people,it has also become a bit of a local mascot(吉祥物)in Durango.People there seem proud of the fact that their city is known as the “scorpion capital”.B(2017·常州期末)Feet of ClayIn 604 BC,the second year of his reign(统治),Babylonian King。

江苏省普通高等学校2018年高三英语招生考试资源练习:题型四任务型阅读试卷五含解析

试卷五(江苏省盐城中学2017届高三下学期开学考试)As adult learners, our very motivation for learning English can sometimes discourage our progress because we are focusing too much on the end result。

But the informal way in which children learn English—through music, games and fun activities-offers an environment in which they can learn and practise without worrying about the importance of it all. In turn, this relaxed attitude gives them confidence in learning English, setting them up for more opportunities in their academic pursuits and career options further down the line. Research has shown the positive impact bilingualism(双语能力) has on a child's cognitive(认知的) development and Catherine Ford, head teacher of Moreton First Prep School, says that children should begin learning as young as age three:“before children become self conscious they can try out their newly acquired languages without fear of embarrassment”。

2018年高考英语江苏专用:专题四 任务型阅读 第二步 真题演练(二) 含答案

真题演练(二) [2016·江苏]An Extension of the Human BrainOther people can help us compensate for our mental and emotional deficiencies(欠缺),much as a wooden leg can compensate for a physical deficiency. To be exact, other people can extend our intelligence and help us understand and adjust our emotions. When another person helps us in such ways,he or she is participating in what I’ve called a “social prosthetic(义肢的) system.” Such systems do not need to operateface-to-face,and it’s clear to me that the Internet is expanding the range of my own social prosthetic systems. It’s already a big bank of many minds.Even in its current state, the Internet has extended my memory and judgment.Regarding memory:Once I look up something on the Internet,I don’t need to keep all the details for future use—I know where to find that information again and can quickly and easily do so.More generally, the Internet functions as if it were my memory. This function of the Internet is particularly striking when I’m writing;I’m no longer comfortable writing if I’m not connected to the Internet. It’s become natural to check facts as I write, taking a minute or two to dip into PubMed,Wikipedia,or other websites.Regarding judgment:The Internet has made me smarter in matters small and large. For example, when I’m writing a textbook,it has become second nature to check a dozen definitions of a key term, which helps me dig into the core and understand its meaning. But more than that,I now regularly compare my views with those of many others. If I have a “new idea”,I now quickly look to see whether somebody else has already thought of it,or something similar—and I then compare what I think with what others have thought. This certainly makes my own views clearer. Moreover,I can find out whether my reactions to an event are reasonable enough by reading aboutthose of others on the Internet. These effects of the Internet have become even more striking since I’ve begun using a smartphone.I now regularly pull out my phone to check a fact, watch a video, read weibo.Such activities fill the spaces that used to be dead time (such as waiting for somebody to arrive for a lunch meeting). But that’s the upside(好处).The downside is that in those dead periods I often would let my thoughts flow and sometimes would have an unexpected insight or idea. Those opportunities are now fewer and farther between.。
