Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival, is a traditional and important celebration in China. It falls on the fifth day of the fifth month of the lunar calendar, which is usually in June according to the Gregorian calendar. The festival is celebrated with various activities, including eating zongzi (glutinous rice wrapped in bamboo leaves), drinking realgar wine, and most importantly, racing dragon boats. The history of dragon boat racing can be traced back to over 2,000 years ago. The festival is held in honor of Qu Yuan, a patriotic poet and minister in ancient China. Qu Yuan was exiled by the king and, in despair, he drowned himself in the Miluo River. The local people admired Qu Yuan and didn't want the fish and water dragons to eat his body, so they raced out in their boats to save him. They beat drums and splashed the water with their paddles to keep the fish and dragons away. This is believed to be the origin of dragon boat racing. The dragon boats used in the races are typically long and narrow, with a dragon head at the front and a dragon tail at the back. The boats are usually decorated with bright colors and dragon scales, making them look fierce and majestic. A team of rowers, usually 20 paddlers, sit side by side in the boat, with a drummer at the front and a steerer at the back. The drummer beats a drum to keep the rowers in sync, while the steerer is responsible for steering the boat. The races are not only about speed and strength, but also about teamwork and coordination. The rowers must paddle in unison, following the rhythm set by the drummer, in order to propel the boat forward efficiently. The steerer must navigate the boat through the water, making quick and precise turns to gain an advantage over the other teams. The atmosphere during the races is electrifying, with the sound of drumbeats, the cheers of the spectators, and the sight of the colorful dragon boats slicing through the water.Dragon boat racing has become a popular sport not only in China but also around the world. Many countries and regions now hold their own dragon boat festivals and races, attracting participants and spectators from all walks of life. The sport has even been included in the roster of the Asian Games and the World Games, further showcasing its global appeal. In conclusion, dragon boat racing is a symbol of Chinese culture and tradition. It embodies the spirit of teamwork, perseverance, and the pursuit of excellence. The festival not only serves as a time for people to remember and honor Qu Yuan, but also as an opportunity for people to come together, celebrate, and enjoy the excitement of the races. It is a tradition that has stood the test of time and continues to bring joy and unity to people all over the world.。

Dragon boat racing is an ancient Chinese tradition that is still popular today, especially during the Duanwu Festival (端午节). Let me tell you all about these awesome boats and the exciting races. What are dragon boats?Dragon boats are long, narrow boats that kind of look like dragons. They are brightly painted with dragon heads at the front and dragon tails at the back. The boats can be different sizes, but the biggest ones fit around 50 paddlers! The paddlers sit in rows and paddle together to make the boat go fast across the water. There is also a drummer at the front who beats a drum to help keep everyone in rhythm. And at the back, there is a person steering with a big oar. It takes a lot of teamwork and coordination for everyone to paddle in sync. Why do they have dragon boat races?Dragon boat racing has been a tradition in China for over 2,000 years! The races first started to honor the memory of Qu Yuan (屈原), a famous poet who lived during the Warring States period. Legend says Qu Yuan drowned himself in the Miluo River after being exiled. People raced out in boats to try and save him, beating drums to scare off evil spirits.Even though they couldn't save Qu Yuan, people began holding dragon boat races every year to remember him. They would throw rice dumplings called zongzi (粽子) into the river to feed the poet's spirit. Zongzi are still an important part of celebrating the Duanwu Festival today.Modern dragon boat racingWhile dragon boat racing started as a way to honor Qu Yuan, it is now a popular international sport. There are dragon boat races all over the world, with teams competing to be the fastest on the water. Some of the biggest races can have thousands of people paddling at the same time - how crazy is that?!The paddlers have to be super fit and coordinated to make the long, narrow boats go as fast as possible. They train reallyhard and some teams are professionals. But there are also lots of amateur teams that race just for fun.My personal experienceLast year, my school had a dragon boat team and I got to try paddling in one of the practice boats. It was so much harder than it looked! We had to paddle in perfect sync or else the boat would zig-zag across the water. The drummer at the front was shouting out commands to help keep us together.Even though I was exhausted after just 20 minutes of paddling, it was an incredible experience. The teamwork, the rhythm of the drumming, the splash of the paddles - I felt like I was part of an ancient tradition. I can't wait until I'm old enough to join the real dragon boat racing team!Isn't dragon boat racing just the coolest thing? This ancient Chinese custom has been passed down for thousands of years. And even today, the bright colors, the fierce dragon designs, the pounding of the drums - it all makes for such an exciting spectacle. It's called Duanwu Jie (端午节) in Chinese. This exciting festival happens on the 5th day of the 5th month of the lunar calendar every year. There are so many fun traditions and delicious foods that make this festival really special. The biggest tradition is dragon boat racing! These boats are really long and skinny, brightly painted to look like dragons. They even have a dragon head at the front! The rowers have to work together and paddle in perfect rhythm to make the boat glide across the water. The team that rows the fastest wins. It's so cool to watch the races and cheer for your favorite team. But the dragon boats aren't just for racing. According to legend, the festival started to honor an ancient Chinese poet and minister named Qu Yuan. He lived during the Warring States period over 2,000 years ago. Qu Yuan was very loyal to his kingdom, but the evil emperor exiled him. Filled with sadness, Qu Yuan walked into the Miluo River and drowned himself. When people heard what happened, they raced out in boats to try and rescue Qu Yuan. They beat drums and splashed the water with their paddles, trying to keep evil spirits and fish awayfrom his body. People even dropped rice dumplings called zongzi into the river as a sacrifice to Qu Yuan's spirit. That's why we eat zongzi on Dragon Boat Festival today! They are pyramid-shaped dumplings made of sticky rice stuffed with different fillings like meat, bean paste, chestnuts, or just plain sweet. The rice is wrapped up in bamboo or reed leaves too. Zongzi are one of my favorite festival foods - they are so yummy and fun to eat!Another fun tradition is to drink realgar wine. It's a special wine infused with a powdery substance called realgar that's supposed to help prevent evil spirits, diseases, and bad luck. The wine looks really cool because the realgar makes it appear cloudy or yellowish. Some people also like to hang aromatic plants like calamus, moxa, and mugwort on their front doors, since the strong smells are thought to drive away evil spirits too.One of the most unique customs is the tradition of making decorative pouches out of scented leaves and flowers, called xiang bao. First you take long leaves like sweet flag or lotus, roll them up, then tie them tightly with colorful thread until they form tiny fragrant pouches. Once finished, you can hang the pouches up as air fresheners or good luck charms. My grandma is a master at making xiang bao - she taught me how last yearand it was really hard! But it smelled amazing when we were done.Of course no Chinese festival is complete without dragon dances too! Elaborate dragon puppets made of silk, bamboo, and paper are paraded through the streets. It takes many skilled dancers working together to animate the undulating dragon bodies and give them a lifelike appearance. The dances are meant to please the dragons and bring luck and prosperity. I always get so excited watching the elaborate dragons spin, leap, and "breathe" smoke or firecrackers. The Dragon Boat Festival is definitely one of the most action-packed and colorful holidays we celebrate all year. From the adrenaline-pumping boat races to the delicious rice dumplings, fragrant traditions, and showstopping dragon dances, there's so much to look forward to. I can't wait until Dragon Boat Festival comes around again! One of my favorite festivals is the Dragon Boat Festival. It's an ancient celebration with rich traditions that take place every year on the 5th day of the 5th month on the Chinese lunar calendar. Let me tell you all about the fun activities and interesting history behind this exciting festival!

The Origin of Chinese Loong Boat Festival龙是中国最大的神物,也是最大的吉祥物。

Chinese Loong is the largest divine creature in China, and it is also the largest mascot in Chinese history. Loong has a very important position in the 5000 years Chinese history which is just as the symbol of the God of Rain and Prosperity. From the beginning of Xia and Shang dynasties (21st~16th century BC), Loong has become a symbol of Chinese auspicious authority.Emperors of different dynasties are called “the Avatar of theLoong", and the whole Chinese unity call themselves “the Descendants of the Loong”. In this respect alone, there is a big difference between China's Loong and the western dragon.中华民族对龙的崇拜历史久远,从最早发现的龙图形,距今已有七八千年。

龙是治水英雄夏禹的化身。

在宋朝年间,下令祭祀河神,就将龙摆上了祭祀位,从此以后,江河湖泊凡有水处,皆归龙神和龙王支配,更有后来的皇帝下诏天下,封龙为王,龙王就成为了河海诸神之尊。

Chinese has a very long history of worship of Loong. The appearance of the first Loong image can be tracked back to seven thousand or eight thousand years ago. Loong is the embodiment of The Great Yu who is flood-control hero in ancient China. In Song Dynasty(10th~13th century AD), The government ordered the ritual of the river god, which Loong was put on the shrine. Henceforth, rivers and lakes are considered to be dominated by Loong.

Loong and the master of the thunder are the two major Rain Gods in China. People not only regard the Loong as the rain god but also take it as the symbol of prosperity and honor. Therefore, people often express their respect for Loong as one of the gods andthe vision of harvest and peace with some sacrificial activities.“loong龙”在中国传统农耕文明中庇护百姓的祥神寓意,而绝非西方“dragon龙”给民众通常展现出来的那种邪恶暴力的负面形象。

In the Chinese traditional agricultural civilization, Loong implies the guardian spirit of the people rather than the negative image of evil and violence that the western "dragon" has. The Loong and the Loong Boats Festival端午节和竞渡的起源与龙有着密切关系,龙舟竞渡应该是史前图腾社会的遗俗。

the Loong Boat Festival and Loong Boat Racing generated from Loong culture. loong boat racing is the relic of prehistoric totem society, which is first celebrated by Wu and Yue totem nationalities in Southern China. And the loong boat racing is the event with both religious rituals and entertainment during the festival.

In the drumbeats, men stroke the Loong shaped canoe to race on the water, please the god and please themselves. Meanwhile in the sacrifice, people who pray for the totem God's favor and blessings, will fight for the first place to sacrifice the competition.

The purpose of totem god worship is to pray for luck and dispel the disaster, Loong boat racing is no exception from that. And the Loong Boat Racing is also for the purpose of peace and harvest.

In all, Loong Boat Festival is not only a speed competition, but also to pray for good weather with harvest and prosperity.

The Loong Boat of Jiang Village originated from the Tang Dynasty and flourished in the Ming and Qing dynasties.

From the beginning of the Tang Dynasty, in Xixi wetland area, the villagers spontaneously organized the dragon boat race to pray for good weather. By the Qing Dynasty, the custom was bestowed by the emperor Qian Long as "The Great Loong Boat Race".

Now the Xixi Loong Boat Festival has become a national intangible cultural heritage. Xixi Loong boat racing is not a speed performance. Instead, there is a unique Loong Boat "stroke pattern" of the race with very local features.1龙舟在水中上下起伏的幅度,宛如一条巨龙在水上前行翻腾。

The Loong boat fluctuated up and down in the water like a huge Loong swim on the water.2

The larger the water spray of the dragon head, the better the skills of the rowers.3

If the movements can be neat and uniform, it could show the professional of the whole team. The Features of the Boats钱塘龙船龙头、龙角较余杭龙船的稍大,龙肩也较宽,雕刻较为精美,色彩多样。

The Procedure of the Jiang Village Loong Boat Worship扎龙船“Zha Loong Chuan” the Loong Boats Decoration端午临近时,将船只装饰成龙舟,西溪一带称为“扎龙船”。
