But its reign is over. In its place, a new generation of services is starting to take hold—services like Twitter and Facebook and countless others vying(竞争)for a piece of the new world. And just as email did more than a decade ago, this shift promises to profoundly rewrite the way we communicate—in ways we can only begin to imagine. We all still use email, of course. But email was better suited to the way we used to use the Internet—logging off and on, checking our messages in bursts. Now, we are always connected, whether we are sitting at a desk or on a mobile phone. The always-on connection, in turn, has created a host of new ways to communicate that are much faster than email, and more fun. Why wait for a response to an email when you get a quicker answer over instant messaging? Thanks to Facebook, some questions can be answered without asking them. You don’t need to ask a friend whether she has left work, if she has updated her public “status” on the site telling the world so. Email, stuck in the era of attachments, seems boring compared to services like Google Wave, currently in test phase, which allows users to share photos by dragging and dropping them from a desktop into a Wave, and to enter comments in near real time. “The whole idea of this email service isn’t really quite as significant anymore when you can have many, many different types of messages and files and when you have this all on the same type of networks.”says Alex Bochannek, curator(馆长)at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, California. Years ago, we were frustrated if it took a few days for a letter to arrive. A couple of years ago, we’d complain about a half-hour delay in getting an email. Today, we gripe about it taking an extra few seconds for a text message to go through. These new services also make communicating more frequent and informal—more like a blog comment or a throwaway aside, rather than a crafted email sent to one person. No need to spend time writing a long email to your half-dozen closest friends about how your vacation went. Now those friends, if they’re interested, can watch it unfold in real time online. Instead of sending a few emails a week to a handful of friends, you can send dozens of messages a day to hundreds of people who know you, or just barely do. Perhaps the biggest change that these email successors bring is more of a public profile for users. In the email world, you are your name followed by a “.com”. That’s it. In the new messaging world, you have a higher profile, packed with data you want to share and possibly some you don’t.Directions: Decide whether the following statements are True or False.61.Being the king of communication in the past, email has lost its dominant position.A.TUREB.FALSE正确答案:A62.People still prefer to waiting for the email to share the information.A.TUREB.FALSE正确答案:B63.People can know what happened to their friends only according to the email and phone call.A.TUREB.FALSE正确答案:B64.Nowadays, you can share lots of information with hundreds of strangers and friends.A.TUREB.FALSE正确答案:A65.The great change of the instant message is to bring more public information.A.TUREB.FALSE正确答案:ASection BSpeeding off in a stolen car, the thief thinks he has got a great catch. But he is in for an unwelcome surprise. The car is fitted with a remote immobiliser(锁止器), and a radio signal from a control centre miles away will ensure that once the thief switches the engine off, he will not be able to start it again. The idea goes like this.A control box fitted to the car contains a mini-cellphone, a micro-processor and memory, and a GPS satellite positioning receiver. If the car is stolen, a coded cellphone signal will tell the control centre to block the vehicle’s engine management system and prevent the engine being restarted. In the UK, a set of technical fixesis already making life harder for car thieves. ‘The pattern of vehicle crime has changed,’ says Martyn Randall, a security expert. He says it would only take him a few minutes to teach a person how to steal a car, using a bare minimum of tools. But only if the car is more than 10 years old. Modern cars are far tougher to steal, as their engine management computer won’t allow them to start unless they receive a unique ID code beamed out by the ignition(点火)key. In the UK, technologies like this have helped achieve a 31 % drop in vehicle-related crime since 1997. But determined criminals are still managing to find other ways to steal cars, often by getting hold of the owner’s keys. And key theft is responsible for 40% of the thefts of vehicles fitted with a tracking system. If the car travels 100 metres without the driver confirming their ID, the system will send a signal to an operations centre that it has been stolen. The hundred metres minimum avoids false alarms due to inaccuracies in the GPS signal. Staff at the centre will then contact the owner to confirm that the car is really missing, and keep police informed of the vehicle’s movements via the car’s GPS unit.Directions: Answer the following questions with the information given in the passage in a maximum of 10 words for each question.66.What’s the function of the remote immobilizer fitted to a car?正确答案:To prevent the car thief from restarting it once stops.67.What makes life harder for car thieves nowadays?正确答案:A set of technical fixes.68.What is essential in making a modem car tougher to steal?正确答案:A coded ignition key.69.Why does the tracking system set a 100-metre minimum before sending an alarm to the operations centre?正确答案:To allow for possible errors in the GPS system.70.What will the operations centre do first after receiving an alarm?正确答案:Contact the car owner.Section CNew technology links the world as never before. Our planet has shrunk. It’s now a “global village”where countries are only seconds away by fax or phone or satellite link. And, of course, our ability to benefit from this high-techcommunications equipment is greatly enhanced by foreign language skills. Deeply involved with this new technology is a breed of modern businesspeople who have a growing respect for the economic value of doing business abroad. In modern markets, success overseas often helps support domestic business efforts. Overseas assignments are becoming increasingly important to advancement within executive ranks. The executive stationed in another country no longer need fear being “out of sight and out of mind”. He can be sure that the overseas effort is central to the company’s plan for success, and that promotions often follow or accompany an assignment abroad. If an employee can succeed in a difficult assignment overseas, superior will have greater confidence in his ability to cope back in the United States where cross-cultural considerations and foreign language issues are becoming more and more prevalent. Thanks to a variety of relatively inexpensive communications devices with business applications, even small businesses in the United States are able to get into international markets. English is still the international language of business. But there is an ever-growing need for people who can speak another language. A second language isn’t generally required to get a job in business, but having language skills gives a candidate the edge when other qualifications appear to be equal.Directions: Complete the following sentences with information given in the passage in a maximum of 10 words for each blank.71.The author’s attitude toward high-tech communications equipment is______.正确答案:positive72.With the increased use of high-tech communications equipment, businesspeople______.正确答案:are attaching more importance to their overseas business73.If one wants to advance within executive ranks, he’d better have the experience of______.正确答案:overseas assignments74.______is an important consideration of international corporations in employing people today.正确答案:Ability to speak the client’s language75.The advantage of employees having foreign language skills is that they can______.正确答案:better control the whole negotiation processSection DIt is said that good lighting can often be helped in promoting safety and security. While bad lighting is not helpful, and may badly compromise the intended goals for which the lighting was designed and installed. Does outdoor nighttime lighting prevent crime? The answer is nobody knows. In some cases, lighting seems to deter crime and it makes people feel more secure, but in reality they may be just as secure without the lighting. In some cases, lighting probably increases crime because it draws attempt to a house or business that would otherwise escape attention. Most crimes, violent and otherwise, take place during the day. After all, criminals need light to do their work, too. A dusk-to-dawn light shining all night in a rural area probably is an inducement for robbery and vandalism. A passerby might not otherwise notice the farmhouse is ever there. An infrared motion-sensor security light which comes on only when someone steps into the beam makes a lot of sense. It is only on when needed, thereby conserving energy. Its sudden illumination serves to frighten away the criminal. These lights are now beginning to replace some of the all-night dust-to-dawn 175 watt mercury vapor lights. This makes good sense from the economical, environmental, and crime prevention points of view. The motion-sensor security lights can cause light pollution and light trespass if too high a wattage spotlight is used, or if they are not aimed down toward the ground. They should also have some shielding. Do street lights, parking lot lights, and security lights prevent crime? Maybe yes, maybe no.【F1】If they are overly bright with much glare, they actually make it easier for a criminal to hide in the deep shadows produced by objects in the harsh glary light and encourage crime rather than discourage it. Well-lit streets with even, uniform lighting, low glare, and utilizing fully-shielded fixtures probably have lower vehicle and pedestrian accident rates. How about bright lights in a parking lot? How many people do you know whose car has been broken into during the day, or while directly underneath a light at night?【F2】One speaker at a recent lighting symposium recounted how his car was robbed at a local mall. It sat near a store entrance and was directly under a bright light!76.No one can say for sure whether nighttime lighting helps prevent crime because____.A.it is not decisive to criminal occurrenceB.it gives people a false sense of securityC.it serves to attract the attention of the robbersD.it only helps the criminals spot a potential location正确答案:A77.A motion-sensor security light is more preferable in all the following ways。
