There is nothing quite like the vast African wilderness. Our jeep broke down suddenly along the too -hot-to-touch sand. With such an engine,it was tough work. The dry heat was fierce and the only break came from using our precious water for brief bucket showers. With no supplies available within the park—it was a sort of no man ’ s land with the occasional cow—it’s necessary to bring all your fuel, food and water with you. We camped in a small open space of the bush. At the height of the dry season, shade was in very little supply,so we angled ourselves near a lonely leafless tree. As the sun was settingf we drove towards the watering hole a few miles away, and were reminded just why we’d chosen to spend weeks experiencing this difficult, unpleasant, and painful exercise on ourselves. Realizing our arrival,a lone lion stopped his drinking. He yawned(打哈欠),then carried on drinking. That night, sleeping on the roof of the jeep,we felt his roar(吼叫)as much as we heard it. All movements and activities stopped, but when bright satellites flashed across the black- ness, the vast African skies offered the only sign that the outside world hadn't come to a standstill. In the morning we saw that the lion had walked on the road overnight, his paw prints pressed into yesterday' s tyre tracks. We set off for another morning inching through the sand; another day of shifting landscapes and raw(原始的),wild beauty; another night lit by fireflies and shooting stars.28. Mary Doe Donecker,an educational expert from an organization, stood in the front of the room, calling out words:“Tell me the first sound you hear in ‘Eunice’?”This was a class on the science of reading. The Bethlehem district has spent about $ 3 million on training, materials and support to help its early elementary teachers and principals learn the science of how reading works and how children should be taught. In the class, teachers spent a lot of time going over the sound structure of the English language.Since the starting point for reading is sound,it’s important for teachers to have a deep understanding of this. But research shows they don’t. Michelle Bosak, who teaches English as a second language in Bethlehem, said that when she was in college, she was taught almost nothing about how kids learn to read. Bosak was one of the first group of teachers in Bethlehem to attend the new, science—based classes. For many teachers, the classes were as much about forgetting old ideas about reading as they were about learning new things.First — grade teacher Candy Maldonado thought she was teaching her students what they needed to know about lette rs and sounds. But that was it. She didn’t think it was important to talk in detail about how words are made up of sounds and how letters represent those sounds.Maldonado had been a teacher for more than a decade. She had no idea how kids learn to re ad. It was “almost like it’s automatic(自动的)” to her.So her first reaction (反应)after learning about the reading science was shock: Whyyears?32. 河南省驻马店市新蔡县第一高级中学2023-2024学年高一下学期6月月考英语试题一、阅读理解When we’re in trouble, we always turn to our parents for help. But would you like them to hear the conversations you have with your friends on the school playground or lunch queue? Social networking sites have become extensions (延伸) of the school hallways, so would you add your parents as “friends” and allow them to view your online activities and conversations with friends? In the past the generation gap included a technology gap, where children were up to date with the latest technology and parents were left behind, content to continue their day-to-day lives as they always had because they had no need to know more about technology. However, more and more parents are beginning to realize just how important social networks are in their lives. This realization has given many parents the motivation (动机) to educate themselves about social networking sites. These days many people are attracted to social networking sites because they can choose who they have around them, there’s also a certain amount of control over privacy (隐私) that we don’t get in real life. Sometimes we feel that privacy is violated (违背) when we must accept a “friend” request from a parent or family member. It’s a difficult choice whether or not to allow a parent to become a part of our online lives. On the one hand we don’t want to “refuse” their request because that might hurt their feelings or make them feel you have something to hide. On the other hand if you do accept, then you could have a sense of being watched and no longer feel free to comment or communicate the way you did before.A recent survey suggested that parents shouldn’t take it personally if their children overlook (忽略) their requests. When a teenager overlooks a parent’s friend request, it doesn’t necessarily mean that he is hiding something, but it could mean that this is one part of his life where he wants to be independent.Perhaps talking with parents and explaining would help soften the blow if you do choosenot to add them to your friend list.1.What can we infer from Paragraph 2?A.Parents feel se cure about their privacy online.B.Parents have realized the importance of social networks.C.Social networks successfully fill the generation gap.D.Social networks offer a chance for parents to communicate.2.What maybe the reason for teenagers to refuse a parent’s friend request?A.Their parents make negative comments on them.B.They hide something from their parents.C.Their parents tend to fall behind in technology.D.They are unwilling to be watched by parents.3.What does this overlook of a parent’s friend request by a teenager potentially indicate?A.The teenager is hiding something from his parents.B.The teenager does not respect his parents’ requests.C.The teenager wants to be independent in certain aspects of his life.D.The teenager is unfamiliar with the use of social media.4.What is the passage mainly about?A.Parents’ friend requests.B.Privacy online.C.The generation gap.D.Social networks.Tea culture is varied in different countries by the way tea is made and drunk, and by the places for tea drinking. With a little more polishing, the scientists’ brainchild could become the way you get into a safe deposit box, your office or past scanners at the airport. It could replace the password for your online banking, your e-mail or your social media accounts. They started their project by measuring the brain waves of 30 subjects. The subjects werefitted with a cap that had 30 electrodes attached to it, and then shown various images and symbols — celebrity faces, words, pictures of food — on a computer screen in 200-millisecond bursts. The brain’s reaction was recorded. The idea is that every time a person needs to use a “password”, he or she goes through the same procedure, and the results are matched to their first-time reaction. If the “brainprint” is cracked — like what happened to the fingerprint records — then the system is merely reset by running another set of images and collecting a different set of brain waves.“Even if that was stolen, you could just cancel it and record one to something else”, says professor Laszlo.Laszlo and her team have shown that their system can be 100 per cent accurate. So one of the most difficult parts of making the system practical already has been overcome. Now, they’re spending much time recording accurate brainprints with as few as three electrodes, which could make recording in the future as easy as wearing a pair of special glasses. They’re also working with cheaper materials and different methods to see if they can bring the cost down.9.What does the underlined word “brainchild” in Paragraph 2 refer to?A.The brain function.B.The biometric system.C.The fingerprint record.D.The online password.10.Why were the images and symbols shown to the subjects?A.To match brainprints with pictures.B.To check the brain’s reaction.C.To create their brainprints.D.To connect brain waves to electrodes. 11.What will happen when a brainprint fails?A.A new one will be set again.B.A spare one will be ready beforehand.C.The users’ security will be threatened.D.The fingerprint record will replace it. 12.What are the researchers doing with the programme now?A.Improving its accuracy.B.Making it user-friendly.C.Recording more brainprints.D.Increasing the number of electrodes. If you’re a teen artist, this is the perfect challenge for you. Have you considered how your decision impacts your relationships? Simply put, hidden costs may be invisible to the naked eye, but they're very visible (可见的) to your wallet. Ignoring these factors can cost you a lot.Consider a scene where a manager cuts costs by asking some workers to leave. While this move reduces salary expenses, how will it impact the morale (士气) and loyalty of the remaining employees? Similarly, imagine somebody spending hours surfing the web, lost in searching for cheaper things. The question is whether the savings equal the spent time. If cost is your only consideration, you'll pay the price. Price Isn't the Only Cost!Furthermore, even if cost is the only factor in your decision—making, all of the “true costs” should be considered. For example, if you're thinking about buying new technology the equipment cost is only part of the price. People will need training, the software may need customization, and you'll probably lose productivity until people get up to speed. Those are real costs too.In addition, even when price is the main consideration, it's important to tell the difference between price and value. For example, when you're investing in a high—quality product from a famous organization, compare maintenance (保养) and repair costs with its competitors, assess the product life span, and hear what existing customers have to say. As the old saying goes, “You get what you pay for.”Always keep in mind that every time you say “yes” to one thing, you're certainly saying “no” to another. So, in decision—making, always consider invisible costs. This ensures you're aiming for the best solution rather than a good one. After all, choices are easy. The tough part is livingwith them.8.What does the underlined phrase “come into play” in paragraph I mean?A.Come into sight.B.Play a part.C.Come into use.D.Play around. 9.What may be the hidden cost of firing workers?A.Reducing salary expenses.B.Cutting costs of the company.C.Doing wonders for the workers' morale.D.Discouraging the remaining workers. 10.How is the passage mainly developed?A.By giving examples.B.By listing figures.C.By using space order.D.By explaining concepts.11.What can we learn from this passage?A.You get what you pay for.B.Price is the main consideration.C.Considering the best solution is easy.D.Be thoughtful when making decisions. As cities balloon with growth, visits to zoos provide an increasingly important opportunity for contact with other species. Though zoos were originally created to help people learn about animals that they had never seen, zoos have a serious role as conservation organizations. Many zoos consider conservation education to be important, and hope to encourage positive attitudes toward animal conservation among their visitors.Traditionally, zoos educate visitors by displaying information. Zoos often attach boring signs to exhibits, describing an animal’s habitat and lifestyle in the wild as well as whether or not the species is endangered. But recently, psychological research has shown that vivid emotional experiences not only attract more attention, they are also better remembered. The scary or funny animal exhibits at the zoo encourage people to pay more attention to information about the animals than they would pay to a written description. The majority of zoo visitors come with family members or on school field trips. Social interactions are thus a key part of the zoo visit. And when people are looking at the animals, there seems to be a tendency to tell what they see to others. In my research at zoos, I found that almost nine out of ten visitors would share their observations of an animal by pointing it out to their companions, or simply by saying “look!”. Social interactions like these are opportunities to create and communicate shared values. Parents who stand in front of an animal exhibit and say “Themommy is looking after her baby.” or even “Look at that!” is giving their children a reason to care about the animal.Zoos can create a culture of conservation. The best exhibits should be the ones that place animals in their natural habitats, where people care for their needs. In this way zoos can help to prevent the disappearance of wild animals from our sight and from our minds.12.What was the original purpose of building the zoo?A.To feed the animals.B.To meet people’s curiosity.C.To bring entertainment to kids.D.To save endangered animals.13.What is the author’s attitude towards the zoo’s traditional way of education?A.Uninterested.B.Positive.C.Negative.D.Unclear. 14.What do people tend to do when appreciating animals?A.They shout to animals.B.They offer their food.C.They take photos of animals.D.They share what they see.15.Which of the following is the best title of the passage?A.The Zoo Attracts People to Visit Animals.B.Communicate with Nature in the Zoo.C.The Zoo Offers Protection to Animals.D.Learn to Care About Animals in the Zoo.Art isn't always an easy and straightforward thing to understand, and it can be hard to appreciate because it has been seen as something that only particularly educated or wealthy people can enjoy. 16 . Anyone can come to appreciate art with a little bit of time and effort.Understand the art and then go a step deeper to understand the artists, their intentions and the historical backgrounds. Artists often create works to comment on major historical events.17 . For example, Pablo Picasso's Guernica (1937) was created in response to the bombings during the Spanish Civil War. It's filled with anti—war symbolism. Picasso said of the artwork, “Painting is not done to decorate apartments. It is an instrument of war against cruelty and darkness.”18 . Art movements grow from popularity of certain ways of creating art. An art school is basically a group of artists, sometimes all in the same region, who all have a similar style or subject matter. Knowing a little bit about these can help you understand why an artist might have made certain choices. For example, painters in the Egyptian school of art had certain rulesthat they had to follow—like the size of any figure they drew was supposed to vary based on the social status of the person they were painting. 19 . Each one symbolized a different aspect of life or death.Check out the life experiences of the artists. Learning a bit about the artists who created a piece can help understand it in a variety of ways. It can help you understand why they made certain artistic decisions. 20 . She had limited mobility after fighting against a serious disease and suffering a bus accident in her early life. Her pain and struggle appears in several of her pieces.A.But our tips will give you a new wayB.Art movements sometimes inspired artistsC.They also couldn't use more than six colorsD.However, this couldn't be further from the truthE.This can give you a window into their unique opinionF.For example, Mexican painter Frida Kahlo had suffered a lotG.Learn about the art movements or schools that influenced the piece二、完形填空It’s the first day of the new term. Social networking dominates our life in so many ways. I am the one who is addicted to it. Sometimes I set deadlines for myself : I will start doing my homework at 8 pm and finish it in two hours. At 7:50 pm, I’m scrolling through my friends’ silly posts and photos. Before I know it, it’s 9:30 pm and I haven’t moved an inch from the sofa. I download song after song, video after video, but I’m not really paying attention. The stimulation is in chasing after the next song or video rather than truly enjoying it. Since I spend so much time socialising online, I keep delaying things that are important in my real life: homework, tasks, my good friends and so on. Especially, I miss connecting with my family members in a meaningful way. So it is with my sister.注意:1. 续写内容应为150词左右;2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

A.What is standard English? Is it spoken in Britain, the US, Canada, Australia, India and New Zealand? Believe it or not, there is no such thing as standard English. Many people believe the English spoken on TV and the radio is standard English. This is because in the early days of radio, those who reported the news were expected to speak excellent English. However, even on TV and the radio you will hear differences in the way people speak. When people use words and expressions different form “standard language”, it is called a dialect. American English has many dialects, especially the Midwestern, southern, African American has many dialects. Even in some parts of the US, two people from neighboring towns speak a little differently. American English has so many dialects because people have come from all over the world.Geography also plays a part in making dialects. Some people who live in the mountains of the eastern US speak with an older kind of English dialect. When Americans moved from one place to another, they took their dialects with them. Ever since middle school, my sister Wang Wei and I have dreamed about taking a great bike trip. Two years ago she bought an expensive mountain bike and then she persuaded me to buy one. Last year, she visited our cousins, Dao Wei and Yu Hang at their college in Kunming. They are Dai and grew up in western Yunnan Province near the Lancang River, the Chinese part of the river that is called the Mekong River in other countries. Wang Wei soon got them interested in cycling too. After graduating from college, we finally got the chance to take a bike trip. I asked my sister, “Where are we going?” It was my sister who first had the idea to cycle along the entire Mekong River from where it begins to where it ends. Now she is planning our schedule for the trip.I am fond of my sister but she has one serious shortcoming. She can be really stubborn. Althoughshe didn’t know the best way of getting to places, she insisted that she organize the trip properly. Now I know that the proper way is always her way. I kept asking her, “When are we leaving and when are we coming back?” I asked her whether she had looked at a map yet. Of course she hadn’t; my sister doesn’t care about details. So I told her that the source of the Mekong is in Qinghai Province. She gave me a determined look -- the kind that said she would not change her mind. When I told her that our journey would begin at an altitude of more than 5,000 meters, she seemed to be excited about it. When I told her the air would be hard to breathe and it would be very cold, she said it would be an interesting experience. I know my sister well. Once she has made up her mind, nothing can change it. Finally, I had to give in.Several months before our trip, Wang Wei and I went to the library. We found a large atlas with good maps that showed details of world geography. From the atlas we could see that the Mekong River begins in a glacier to move quickly. It becomes rapids as it passes through deep valleys, traveling across western Yunnan Province. Sometimes the river becomes a water fall and enters wide valleys. We were both surprised to learn that half of the river is in China. After it leaves China and high altitude, the Mekong becomes wide, brown and warm. As it enters Southeast Asia, its pace slows. It makes wide bends or meanders through low valleys to the plains where rice grows. At last, the river delta enters the South China Sea.6. The text mainly tells us that the author and his sister___________.A. plan and make preparations for their bike tripB. take a bike trip along the Mekong RiverC. do some research on the Mekong RiverD. are fond of cycling and travelling7. What can we learn from the text?A. They would need others' help during their trip.B. They knew well about the Mekong River before.C. They gave up their trip because they would meet with many difficulties on the way.D. Their trip would be very difficult because there would be many difficulties on the way.8. Why did Wang Kun keep asking Wang Wei questions?A. Because he wanted to give her as much help as he could.B. Because he wanted to persuade her to give up the trip.C. Because he knew very well about the Mekong River.D. Because he wanted to organize the trip himself.9. What does Wang Kun mean by saying “the proper way is always her way”?A Wang Wei is reliable, because she always knows the proper way.B. Wang Wei always insists on her way, even though she doesn't know the proper way.C. Wang Kun thinks that his sister is stubborn and can’t do anything properly.D. Wang Kun thinks that his sister can find the best way to get to places.C.You may think that English dictionaries have been used for many, many centuries. The spelling of English has always been a problem but it was more of a problem in the days before a dictionary. Then people could spell words in different ways which you might find interesting. But it made reading English much more difficult. So dictionaries were invented to encourage everybody to spell the same. In fact, an English dictionary like the kind you use today wasn’t made until the time of the late Qing Dynasty. Three men did most of the important early work on dictionaries: Samuel Johnson, Noah Webster, and James Murray. These men spent nearly all of their lives trying to collect words for their dictionaries. For them, it wasn’t only a job; it was a wonderful journey of discovery. The largest dictionary in the world is the Oxford English Dictionary, or OED for short. The idea for this dictionary came from an important meeting in Britain in 1857. Twenty-two years later, Oxford University asked James Murray to be the editor of its new dictionary.Murray had never been to college. At the age of fourteen, he left his village school in Scotland and taught himself while working in a bank. Later he became a great teacher. After Oxford gave him the job, Murray had a place built in the garden behind his house to do his work. Part of it was one metreunderground. In winter it felt like a barn, he had to wear a heavy coat and put his feet in a box to keep warm. Every morning, Murray got out of bed at five o’clock and worked several hours before breakfast. Often he would work by candle light into the evening. Murray hoped to finish the new dictionary in ten years. But after five years, he was still adding words for the letter A! Then others went to work with Murray, including his two daughters. He worked on the dictionary until he was very old. Forty-four years later, in 1928, other editors finished it. It included more than 15,000 words in twelve books. And you thought your English dictionary was big!10. Which of the following is TRUE according to the reading?A. People didn’t know how to spell words in the days before a dictionary.B. Samuel Johnson, Noah Webster, and James Murray did all the work on dictionaries.C. Collecting words for the dictionary is an easy job.D. Oxford University decided to edit its new dictionary in 1877.11. It took Murry _______ years to complete the letter A.A. fiveB. less than fiveC. more than fiveD. ten12. We can infer ______________ from the last paragraph.A. James Murry taught himself while working.B. The Oxford English was finished in ten years.C. When the Oxford English Dictionary was finished, Murray had passed away.D. Murry’s daughters helped him to complete the dictionary.D.If you are looking for the place that has everything, there is only one place to visit, and that’s New York.
