“康桥”今通译剑桥，是英国学术、文化中心，风景胜地，在伦敦北面八十公里左右，靠近康河（剑河），以剑桥大学驰名于世。
一九二○年九月徐志摩因景仰罗素，放弃了他在美国即将获得的哥伦比亚大学的博士学位，前往英国，想成为罗素的弟子，但罗素因在欧战时力倡和平而被康桥的三一学院解聘，离开了康桥。
徐志摩只好当一名没有学籍的选修生，在康桥度过了一年（1921—1922），攻读经济学硕士学位。
本诗作于1928年秋再次访问母校后的归途中。
第一节历来为人传诵：“轻轻的我走了，/正如我轻轻的来；/我轻轻的招手，/作别西天的云彩。
”诗中连用三个“轻轻的”，将离别时依依之情表现得含蓄委婉。
