Make comments on the realistic situation of our education and point out the similarities and differences. This story talks about a famous school, a group of rich students, a great teacher and the dead poets society. A sad one that can move anyone and cause one to think of our life we are leading. The plot is about a number of students who are taught by Williams about life. They aretaught how to enjoy themselves. This ends up causing great controversyamong the heads of the school. The students are terrific and even the dialogue is great. What this film showed me was that we have the responsibility and the joy of being alive in this planet. That we are dust, and we will go back to it, so we have precious little time to make a difference. That we have a moral obligation to "seize the day, and make our lives extraordinary" That the world, basically is ours. That the only limitations are within ourselves, and that we owe it to us to fight, to rebel against conformity, to change what we hate and keep what we love. That living in this world is a beautiful responsibility, and that only cowards dare not to change it for the better. This is the story of students at the respected “Welton academe”, a preparatory school in Vermont. Such schools in Vermont. Such schools were(and often still are ) very conservative institutions that serve as high schools for parents who insist on sending their children to the best university. Welton, like many prep schools, admitted only boys. The movie takes place in 1959. Mr. Keating, a young and exciting English and poetry teacher, who is determined to teach his students to life with absolute passion. Mr. Keating , using poetry as his vehicle teaches his students to challenge the institutions around them. The energetic man asks his student to call him Mr. Keating or ‘O Captain My Captain!’ It’s written by a poet named Walt Whitman about Abraham Lincoln. The private Welton Academy is a lifeless, completely cut off the world school. You will find the freedom of spirits ,the revelation of souls and the complicated story happened between the young studentsThe movie was only a group of rebellious students rebelling against traditional education. Right in this time, a non-traditional person happened to become their teacher. The conclusion was that the non-traditional yielded to the traditional , and the really prevailed against the romantic. The amazing behavior at the end of the movie was not shallow affectation, b ut a great shock of audiences’ hearts. The boys standing on the desks bid the most formal farewell to their bestteacher with the firmest expression in their eyes. The kettledrums ringing, the bagpipes playing, the movie reached its climaxThe second view of the movie left me a clear train of thoughts and a clear tenet. Every class given by Keating was a wonderful performance, greatly inspiring his adolescent students to emancipate themselves from such ideas as the study only and study for a good school. He knew what they needed most was to understand life and broaden their mind andvision so that they could shake off worldly affairs as fame and wealth and enjoy the life, love and poetic purity. His romantic enlightenment had no doubt wielded a profound influence on the boys’ mind and soul. The plot is about a number of students who are taught by Williams about life. They are taught how to enjoy themselves. This ends up causing great controversy among the heads of the school.

Term Paper (1 x 100)Directions: You are required to write a critical and analytical essay of 2,500 to 3,000 words in English on one of the following movies that we have learned this semester, The Graduate, Kramer vs. Kramer, Dead Poets Society, Philadelphia, The Shawshank Redemption, American Beauty, Scent of a Woman and One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest. The essay should AT LEAST include three aspects: background, themes and conflicts.Carpe DiemHas your life been greatly changed by anyone? If so, how he/she affected your life? These are not easy questions to answer. Because none of you know what your life would be if those people hadn‟t appeared. But in the movie Dead Poets Society, the students in Welton Academy prep school were supposed to focus themselves on their school work, and their lives were completely changed by Mr. Keating, their new English teacher. This is my best-loved movie and it enlightens me on my future road. In this article, I‟m going to talk about the movie from four aspects: background, themes, conflicts and scenes.Although the movie was shot in the 1980s, the story went that a bunch of promising boys around seventeen was starting their new semester at the best preparatory school in the U.S. in 1959. During this time, American society was filled with the constant struggle between tradition and rebellion. The philosophical theme was frequently referred in the director Pete Weir‟s other works which were earlier than Dead Poets Society. Actually, similar movies concerning the pursuit of individualism, anti-institutionalization and teenage education can be backdated to the early 1950s.When thinking about America in the 1950s, I come up with three words. The first one is “teenager”. The word Teenager was created in the 1950‟s due to the tremendous population of those in this age category and because teenagers started gaining more independence and freedoms. Before WWII, teens had very little economic freedom, independence, and input into decision making. However, in the 1950‟s, expectations changed for the teenager s. Theeconomy started booming and families experienced a great deal of economic power, freedom and independence, including teenagers. Therefore, Things were starting to change. The teens of the …50‟s became the first teen-aged youths to stand out as a distinct group with interests, fashions, musical tastes and economic power of their own.Another word that occurs to me is “rebellion”. Perhaps, some would say looking at society in general that the first indication or act of teenage rebellion began in the 1950‟s. That‟s t rue. In the 1950‟s, teenagers w ere more inclined and encouraged to attend college, find a skill, and seek a successful career. On one hand, Parents wanted their children to have a bright future and a good college degree was just the first step. That‟s why we can see from the movie that such kind of college preparatory schools, like Welton Academy School, were so popular in the U.S. at that time. On the other hand, however, this newly found independence would often result in conflict between the parents and the children. Teenagers were not willing to live their life exactly as their parents designed. Instead, they wanted to make the choices all by themselves and do things which they were really interested in. Just like Neil, he was desperate to be an actor and pursue acting as his life career. But he didn‟t have the final say in his future because his overbearing father expected him to be a doctor. He failed to persuade his father and decided to kill himself to show his determination. Neil Perry‟s suicide repr esented the teenagers‟ rebellion against parents and authority.Apart from “teenager”, “rebellion”, “rock and roll” is also an important word which can not be ignored. Actually, rock …n‟ roll was another symbol of teenager‟s rebellion. Some even thought that it was the root cause of all this rebellion. Rock …n‟ roll is a kind of music with strong and power beats, sexually suggestive lyrics and has strong roots in the African-American blues and gospel traditions. Back to 1959s, conservatives denounced it as “jungle music” or “Satan‟s music” and thought it extremely unsuitable for the children. However, curiosity is human being‟s nature, and teenage rs began to crave for it. And they had extra money to buy the records. Consequently, teenagers in the 1950s have played a huge part in the rise of rock and roll music. There are also rock …n‟ roll elements mixing in the Dead Poets Society. In the first gathering of the society members, they started to read poems aloud. When it came to Meeks, he did it along with the strong rhythm of the drum beats. It fascinated all the boys and they began to dance with it. It was a really good innovation as he combinedpoems and rock …n‟ roll together harmoniously. As rebellion was one of the most significant features of the …50s, it was also the core theme throughout the movie. Without it, all the other themes can‟t make any sense. Neil, Todd and their fellow classmates were expected to be the future doctor, lawyer, and banker, etc. They had been doing what their parents wanted them to do all the time and never said no. But I can see the growing rebellious flames in their eyes when they were instructed to stick to the four “great” beliefs-tradition, honor, discipline and excellence. Once the seed of rebellion was planted, the fruit was inevitable. What they need was just a fertile soil to let it grow. When Mr. Keating led them out of the classroom in the very first class, another door in their life was opened. He was going to lead them to a wonderland where there were only freedom and beauty. Greatly affected by that ideal world, the kids were more inclined to change the hateful real world. They had their own ideas of making the realistic world a better one, but the challenges they were faced with were too powerful to be overwhelmed. As the result of an energetic but weak rebellion, Neil ended his life because he hoped to seek a brand new one in another world, and Mr. Keating were expelled by the school administration as the scapegoat of Neil‟s death. Although we can not say it was a su ccessful rebellion, but it did have profound effect on those teenagers. When the bland Todd stood on the desk and cried out: “Captain, my captain”, I know everything has changed, as well as everybody. Neil was dead, but his spirits remained.Throughout the se teenagers‟ rebellion, there was one belief backing them up. Because of this belief, they were able to get rid of all the fears coming from family and school. That was Carpe Diem, which means seize the day. Mr. Keating helped them to stretch their minds and exercise their rights to defiant acts of love for life and poetry, refuting society. Do not let others dominate your future and be the master of your life, not slaves, thus you can make your life extraordinary. Life is the most precious thing you can get and everyone has only one chance. Once you screw it up, you can never do it again. Therefore, you should try your best to make every single day count. Those who are not aware of the value of life will never truly understand the essence of Carpe Diem. Mr. Keating cited Thoreau‟s words “Most men live lives of quiet desperation.” in his poetry class. But what he commented on it was more instructive to students. Well, Icould still feel Mr. Keating‟s remark ringing at my ears: “Don‟t be resigned to that. Bre ak out!” He partly agreed with Thoreau, nevertheless, he held an optimistic view and had a constructive plan to release his students from their chained life. Since life is short, and we could only live once, which gives us precious little time to make a difference before we go back to dusts. Sometimes I may ask myself this question, what is the purpose of life? Nowadays, A lot of people are trapped from what they had build up, spending their whole life turning round and round around those meaningless devices. They are seeking an answer. But now with the help of Mr. Keating, I‟ve straightened it out: Medicine, law, business, engineering, these are all noble pursuits, and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for.Recently, as the movie 2012 becomes a hit in box office, the Maya‟s prophesy of Doomsday leads to a heated worldwide discussion about life and human. Assuming the world will come to its end on December 22nd, 2012, what would you do in the last few months of your life? I guess most people will try to live everyday to the fullest. The famous English moralist Jeremy Bentham thinks that maximizing the happiness of most people is the major principle and final purpose of life.1That is to say, we should take a positive attitude and enjoy everyday. Carpe Diem is a good method to help us to achieve that. I have to say, those students were so lucky to have a teacher like Keating, who taught them not only how to appreciate poetry, but also the appropriate attitude towards life.Conflicts appear everywhere in the movie, that‟s also why audience are so fascinated by it. They are eager to know how the conflicts deepen gradually and how they are solved eventually. In the movie Dead Poets Society, Mr. Keating was a hero. He shouted: “Boys, you must strive to find your own voice.” His viewpoints and thoughts on life stayed the same throughout the movie no matter what conflict was occurring. Influenced by him, the students became more independent in their thinking and discovered what they wanted out of life. The change in these students is what caused the main conflict of the movie. However, Keating‟s philosophies about life were not approved by the other teachers in Welton Academy who believed that the students were not emotionally equipped to cope with the kind of freedom that Keating advocated. They questioned Keating‟s teaching methods and made him under 30great pressure. But Mr. Keating did not give up easily. As a result, the conflict deepened as Keating's students began to rebel. The boys start their own dead poet's society and begin living by the motto "Carpe Diem!”. One of the main characters, Neil Perry, discovered his true passion in life. However, his father wanted him to go through medical school and become a doctor, but Neil himself had his heart set on acting. His father lashed out on him for disobeying and Neil reacted drastically by committing suicide. The conflict reached its climax.Behind all these conflicts, behind all these storms, I see that group of people who have ideal thoughts in their heart are faced with the difficulties of real world. That is idealism versus realism. That is a battle, a war, and the casualties could be your hearts and souls,I feel like being a production in the manufacturing line of school, and society is the consumer? We can see there were two totally different worlds in the movie, one was the real world suppressed by rules and traditions, and the other was the ideal world filled with freedom and passion. Mr. Keating was the connection between two worlds. He was a respectable teacher in real world, but more importantly, he was the captain in the fantastic world who helped the kids to take the right attitude towards life. They tore some entire pages off their text books and threw them away, because their teacher regarded the theory contained in theses papers as sheer rubbish. They climbed onto and then stood upon the teacher‟s desk one by one in class, for Mr. Keating had required them to perceive the world from a different angle. All the students‟ passion and courage were aroused by Mr. Keating, and they wanted to break all the rules and fly in the blue sky. However, reality is invariably cruel. A teacher with such noble characters was actually expelled by the school. It was the tragedy of education.Neil‟s suicide was his last struggle against the cold middle-class value when his dreams were overwhelmed by the reality. Neil did not want to be a hero; he just can‟t betray his h eart. The hardest thing in one‟s life is to make choice. Many people have gone through this kind of dilemmas just like Neil. When your dream encounters the cruel reality, what would you do? Will you comply with the reality easily or never give up? This is a question. But I remember captain‟s words: be the master of your life, not slaves. We may lose something when we are trying to adapt to the society, but I hope the critical stuff will remain in our bones. Neil made his choice. His way is respectful, but I‟m not sure whether his noble motives can justify hissuicide. After all, cherishing life is one of most important things we have learned. There are some very depressing scenes, but they are very artful, and teach you of appreciation for those brave members of society that dare stand up for their beliefs, and rights to wrestling around with life. For my part, two scenes impressed me the most. The first one is in Mr. Keating‟s first class. He led his students to stand in front of the wall of trophy cabinets and began to cite Walt Whitman‟s poem “Oh Captain, my captain”, preferring the students to call him “captain” instead of “teacher”. He whispered the Latin phrase “Carpe Diem” by the boys‟ ears, made them believe it was the message the past students wished to convey on to them. At that time, I was totally absorbed in the scene and I felt the urgency in my heart to seize the day and savor every single moment in my life. When the students ran towards the cavern, I was again deeply touched by the several runnin g figures in the mist. I can‟t see the ir faces clearly, but my heart trembled violently with excitement. In the cavern, they let out the angers and suck out the marrows of life. During the day, they were under tight control of school authority and behaved in the way they were expected. But after the night fell, their souls were awakened and they began to act as whole and complete human beings who had dreams and passions. ''Two roads diverged in a yellow wood and I, I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.''2Although you may encounter a lot of difficulties on that road, but don‟t worry, as long as you have faith and belief in heart, you will make huge difference. Like Neil, he learned to fight for his chance to do what he actually dreamed—being an actor, despite his father‟s interference; like Todd, he revealed his potential of creating poems by Keating‟s stimulation, which helped him regain confidence and faith in life. Each time I watch my favorite Dead Poets Society, I feel like having a spiritual Baptism. Living in this world is a beautiful responsibility, and only cowards dare not to change it for the better. Sometimes maybe all you need is just one lesson. From now on, I decide to seek “my” life, not contenting with merely “a” life.References2Taken from The Road Not Taken, by Robert Frost[1] /wiki/Dead_Poets_Society[2] /fifties_history/Teenage_Life_in_the_1950s.htm。

Dead poet societyThe book dead poet society is one of the few books which touches my heart and make me choke for something. I love it so much that when I finished it I had decided to go on it once. There are so many aspects deserving our commenting. Such as “Why do the school, Welton Academy, kill the personalities of children” ,“ Is right that educational ways of the teachers or parents to their children like those in that book” and “The faith of John Keating”……All of them are my beloveds, but the words “seize the day and make your life extraordinary” is my favorite. So I will illusion that in the book in the following. What is …seize the day?‟I have thought it was to do the things around me, you should do, before I read it. Then when I finished it I know I‟m wrong. Seize the day is to devote yourself to the things that you love to do and learn to how to choose our life. When in the classes of the school‟s origin teacher Dr. Hager, in face of the dull course, the students often said “You‟ll get used to old Hager”. But in the class of Keating, students are allowed to express their ideas and have the chance to find what they like and chase it.To be honest, in the class of the teacher, Hager, students have more chance to learn more setting knowledge. By it, students learn to give up to the bad situations and are more able to learn the survival regula tions. However, I think it‟s not what we need in our school dates. What is more important for us is acquiring the chances to divergent(发散)thinking and cultivate our creativities. In the future,we have plenty of time to infect the smell of adult world, so it is unnecessary for us harry to touch it. So I believe the meaning of …seize the day‟ is loving what love and persisting it without regret.Seize the day, is to have the courage to try what you really want to do and find what you like. Then treasure it. Life is not a race, but a journey to be savored each step of the way.

Many of us are losing ourselves because of the reality, frustration, the pressure or the authority. In fact, we are just like a chess, for others have arranged all for you. We spend a lot of time in those things we do not like. However, we are immature. We choose silence or choose to force ourselves to like it. We ourselves never dare to say "NO" loud, or never master our life in our hand.Perhaps, you will defend for yourself, "This is no other way to do "; Perhaps you will say, "Now that everything looks the same, can I be unique ";Perhaps you will say, "This is the reality, and no one can beat it"; perhaps, very likely, you will become one of them and establish the authority of parents to educate your children. Y ou have become a loyal defender of authority. There is an old golden Chinese saying: No one can exist who resists me .However, all in all, cannot it change?《Dead Poets Society》tells me that nothing is impossible. At that time, nothing is more important than yielding. What you have to do is to obey discipline and authority. To Rebel means no good results. In that old church school, in the solemn opening ceremony, taught by an old-fashioned and strict teacher, with the hope of the parents who have paved the road for them, they lose themselves. Tha t "Tradition” "honor" "discipline "" excellence " quells them.“Oh, captain, my captain! Where are you?”Fortunately, they met with Mr Keating. To help more young people to find his own, Mr Keating chose teaching. He taught students to live. Students set up "Dead Poets Society" to release themselves. He taught students not to blindly comply with authority. He asked each one to tear up the wrong page that others take as authority. He encouraged the students to listen to the sound of heart. Then Knox read love poems to a girl, expressed his love bravely. He encouraged the students to see the world with a new vision. He let everyone stand on a chair to watch the world. He helped students overcome psychological barriers. And then Todd finally dared to express himself in front of everyone. Also, finally, It was he who first stood up and told the truth.Oh, captain, my captain. We are so lucky to have you. Because of you, we lead a new life from now on.I was impressed by the scene. Finally, students stood one by one on the desk to speak for Mr. Keating. Though Mr. Keating would not be back again, his impact on students will exist forever.I think that their life will certainly become unusual and significant from now on.I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, I wanted tolive deep and suck out all the marrow of life, and not when I had come to die, discovered that I had not lived. To me,seize all to find out the meaning of life and one day the world will be different because of you.。
