I look forward to an America which commands respect throughout the world not only for its strength but for its civilization as well.
And I look forward to a world which will be safe not only for democracy and diversity but also for personal distinction.”
…
The great artist is thus a solitary figure. He has, as Frost said, “a lover’s quarrel with the world.” In pursuing his perceptions of reality he must often sail against the currents of his time. This is not a popular role.
I see little of more importance to the future of our country and our civilization than full recognition of the place of the artist. If art is to nourish the roots of our culture, society must see the artist free to follow his vision wherever it takes him.
…
In serving his vision of the truth the artist best serves his nation. And the nation which disdains the mission of art invites the fate of Robert Frost’s hired man---“the fate of having nothing to look backward to with pride and nothing to look forward to with hope.”

The moon is bright or dim and she may wax or wane.
There has been nothing perfect since the olden days.
So let us wish that man 此事古难全。 Will live long as he can!
Wine cup in hand, I ask the sky.
I do not know what time of the year 不知天上 宫阙,
It would be tonight in the palace on high.
Riding the wind, there I would fly,
Men have sorrow and joy; they part or meet again; The moon is bright or dim and she may wax or wane.
There has been nothing perfect since the olden days.
The moon goes round the mansions red
Through gauze-draped window soft to shed
Her light upon the sleepless bed.
Why then when people part, is the oft full and bright?
To stay together till death and endfor far, for near, hand, oath, accord:Never alivewill we keep that word.(Ezra Pound)
