Passage 1

Rock and roll came from jazz and blues during the 1950s. One of the first rock and roll songs was Bill Haley’s “Rock around the clock.” One of the first very famous rock and roll singers was Elvis Presley. Others were Buddy Holly and Chuck Berry. Now, almost every country has many rock and roll bands and singers. Sometimes performers call their music by different names, like “rap” or “punk”. They sing and play mixtures of rock and roll and talking or other sounds. “Rap” and “punk” both come from rock and roll, or “rock music”.

Some fans who like rock music think classical music is boring. Many fans play rock music very loudly. They forget about the people who enjoy soft music. Loud music can make these people nervous. Many fans also like to dance to rock and roll.

When rock and roll was new, people had only records to play the music at home. After that, we used cassette tape and records. Now we listen to music on compact discs ( CD碟片). Most modern bands and singers use companies to make videos (视盘) of their songs. With videos, fans can see the performers at the same time they listen to the music. Making a recording and the video that goes with it is very expensive.

Passage 2

Recently, in the hope of earning both money and social experience, I became a door-to-door salesman.

I once heard a saying: “If somebody wants something of yours, you will be treated as wa rmly as spring, but if they don’t, you may be treated as cold as winter. You may consider this an exaggeration, but if you are a salesman, it is definitely correct.”

You would never have found it to be so true if you haven’t been a salesman. You needn’t endure doubtful looks

and unfriendly comments, you needn’t listen to something absolutely wrong and nod to say that it is quite right; you needn’t worry about being refused time after time; you needn’t always maintain patience and a smile; you needn’t re peat the same sentences over and over again; you needn’t talk to somebody you dislike…

I did this work for a month, then I decided to quit. Apart from the reasons above, I found I was paying too much attention to the job and thus sacrificing my study time. The latest test result proved that my grades were getting worse.

Even worse, I hadn’t enough time to join my classmates in college activities. Sometimes I felt lonely and under strong pressure and burden from both my study and my part-time job. No w I think it isn’t worth doing such a thing, for even though I was earning money it came at great cost.

Newspapers and magazines often publish stories about excellent students who do part-time work while also maintaining high scores in class. But according to my experience, part-time work can have very strong negative influences on study.

Most students don’t view the relationship between study and work correctly. In my opinion, if it isn’t a must for financial reasons, students should be cautious about undertaking part-time jobs.

3.If you want to be a successful salesman, you have to ____________ .

A.talk to people you don’t like at all

B.repeat what other people say

C.listen to some true comments

D.learn how to cheat people

4.The italicize d word “cautious” in the last line means _____________ .

A. honest

B. careful

C. patient

D. sure

5.Which of the following is not true?

I hadn't the slightest idea who she was but I obviously had to go.

It had been snowing heavily that day and I didn't know the way. I had been driving for at least an hour when I finally found his place. Passage 6

Equal pay for equal work is a phrase used by the American women who feel that are looked down upon by society. They say it is for women to be paid less than men for the same work.

People who hold the opposite opinion (mainly men)have an answer to this. They say that men have more responsibility than women;a married man is expected to earn money to support his family and to make the important decision, and therefore it is right for men to be paid more. There are some people who hold even stronger opinion than this and are against married women working at all. When wives go out to work, they say,the home and children are given no attention to. If women are encouraged by equal pay to take full time job, they will be unable to do the things. Women are best at making a comfortable home and bringing up children. They will have to give up their present position in society.

This is exactly what they want to give up,the women who disagree say. They want to escape from the limited place which society expects them to fill and to have freedom to choose between a job and home life,or mixture of the two. Women have the right of equal pay and equal opportunities.
