Mrs. M: Good. So change the first part and m ake those corrections and yourpaper will be great.

Tara: OK. Thanks for all your help, Professor M organ. I‘ll e-mail my paper to you later today. M: You know, technology is amazing. In high s choolI used to write my term papers on a typ ewriter.

T: It must have taken a long time to write a p aper on a typewriter.

M: Well, I was pretty fast, but I made some mi stakes. Actually, the typewriters weren‘ t tha t bad. Now, as for the first computers … oh my gosh!

T: What do you mean?

M: The first computers were so unreliable. Th ey used to crash all the time. And they were not as affordable or as fast as they are now. T: Mine‘s pretty fast, but not as fast as some of the newer, more expensive ones

M: I know! And nowadays, almost everyone h as a computer. In those days, nobody had t heir own computer. We used to use the ones at the university.

T: In the computer lab?

M : Yeah, that‘s all we had. I‘ll never forget, o ne spring, during final exams.

Everybody was working on their term papers, and the electricity went out!

T : So? No big deal … laptops have batteries …

M : I went back to the good, old-fashioned w ay.

T : You mean typewriters?

M : Nope. I used something more affordable, portable, reliable, disposable, something that always worked.

1.”Don’t quit your day job! ”is advice frequently given by understandably pessimistic family members and friends to a budding artist who is trying hard to succeed. The conquest of fame is difficult at best, and many end up emotionally if not financially bankrupt. Still, impure motives such as the desire for worshipping fans and praise from peers may spur the artist on. The lure of drowning in fame’s imperial glory is not easily resisted. Takeshi: Man, look at that! In New York there’s always something being built. And everything goes up so quickly…you never know what’s going to be around next week. Roberto: yeah, but on the other hand, sometimes I wonder about overcrowding. Maybe they need to start building down more.

Takeshi: Building down?

Roberto: Yeah, it’s when you build underground instead of above ground.Takeshi: Nah, that’s too much like living in a cave. I love the skyscrapers! They are the most incredible feats of engineering!

Roberto: True. And some of the first ones were built right here in New York City. akeshi: That’s right! You know, I wonder what New York looked like before all these buildings popped up.

Takeshi: Yeah. I’ll bet it’ll be something fantastic!

Roberto: May be….what do you think it’s going to look like?

Takeshi: I don’t know…but you know what? I’m going to remember what it looked like. Roberto: Uh…you are too much. Hey, let’s ask this guy what your “famous” building’s going to be…..

Mrs. Morgan: Well, I was pretty fast, but I made some mistakes. Actually, the typewriters weren’t that bad. Now, as for the first computers… oh my gash!

Tara: What do you mean?

Mrs. Morgan: The first computers were so unreliable. They used to crash all the time. And they were not as affordable or as fast as they are now.

Tara: Mine’s pretty fast, but not as fast as some of the newer, more expensive ones. Mrs. Morgan: I know! And nowadays, almost everyone has a computer. In those days, nobody had their own computer. We used to use the ones at the university.

Tara: Everything?

Mrs. Morgan: Everything. We used to lose information all the time, but that time it was terrible. Everybody lost their papers that afternoon…including me.

2.He was an immensely talented man, determined to a degree unusual even in the ranks of Hollywood stars. His huge fame gave him the freedom----and, more importantly, the money---to be his own master. He already had the urge to explore and extend a talent he discovered in himself as he went along. “It can’t be me. Is that possible? How extraordinary,”is how he greeted the first sight of himself as the Tramp on the screen.

Takeshi: So, what are today’s headlines? Mike: I don’t know. I’m reading the important stuff like my horoscope and the entertainment section. Hey! Look at this! James Hammond is playing at CBGB’s tonight! Takeshi: James Hammond. Isn’t he that famous blues guitarist? The guy with the silver guitar and the long, black hair? Mike: No, that’s Kevin Diamond. James Hammond is the singer. He has short spiky hair, he always wear that really cool white suit…

Takeshi: I know him---he’s great! Let’s go! Mike: Ah, man! It’s sold out!

Mike: The one sitting down? Wearing the pink shirt?

Takeshi: No. The really pretty one with the long hair and glasses. You know her, she lives in our building. She’s a journalist. She writes all the music reviews for The Village Voice.

Mike: Well, what are you waiting for? Go over there and ask her if she can get us some tickets for tonight!

Takeshi: Are you kidding? I can’t do that. I hardly know her!

Takeshi: Somehow, I got a ticket---and a date with…Anna Markovich.

Mike: You are kidding me! That’s great!

Ms. Li: Please have a seat. Thanks very much for coming in. Did you bring your resume? Claudia: Yes. Here you are.

Ms. Li: Great. Thanks. First let me tell you a little bit about the job. We’re looking for someone to sell our new software product internationally, a pleasant manner with customers.

Claudia: I agree…that’s important. I’ve worked in sales for years and have always tried to really listen to my customers to find out what they need. I think I’m really good at that. Ms. Li: That’s great. So tell me a little bit about your experience with software programs.

Claudia: Well, I’ve trained people how to use a similar software product for the past two yeas at my current job, so I really feel I know the product and customer needs. Ms. Li: You’ve been very busy, Ms. Oliveira. Well, thanks very much for coming in. We’ll be in touch.

Claudia: Come on. We’re going to be late for our aerobics class!

Tara: Oh, by the way there was a phone call from some woman called…Yvonne something…Mike: Don’t worry about it. It’s going to be great…especially since you have a “lovely assistant” like me.

Takeshi: Right…there, that should do it. Got your signs?

Mike: Check!

Takeshi: Ready Mr. Howard? And rolling…OK…”Furniture Showroom” commercial---take one.

Mr. Howard: Hello there! My name is John Howard, president of furniture Showroom, and I’m here to tell you why we’re one of the most successful furniture stores around. The keys to our success are excellent quality, great design, and affordable prices. And who are these keys for? Why for you---our customers! And that’s why I’m here today to show you some of our premier pieces. Like this sleek and stylish lounge chair. All our loungers are covered in 100% genuine leather, and built with solid steel-frame construction. Take a look at that---talk about well-made. Or take a look at this Super Sleeper Sofa…why it’s one of the most comfortable sofas you’ll ever lay your head on! It’s true! See for yourself! You know, folks, Furniture Showroom is not one of those flyby-night operations---“here today, gone tomorrow.”Our company was founded in 1982 with only three hard-working employees: my wife, my son, and me. Here at Furniture Showroom, we really pride ourselves in giving you the best product, at the right price! So come on down to Furniture Showroom and take a look at our…

Mike: Well, you know what this calls for, don’t you?

Takeshi: Yeah…an apology.

Mike: No, an encore!

3.As a welfare client I’m expected to bow before the caseworker. Deep down, caseworkers know that they are being made fools of by many of their clients, and they feel they are entitled to have clients bow to them as compensation. I’m not being bitter. Most caseworkers begin as college-educated liberals with high ideals. But after a few years in a system that practically requires people to lie, they become like the one I shall call ”Suzanne”, a detective in shorts.

4.All these developing regions see advanced communications as a way to leap over whole stages of economic development. Widespread access to information technologies, for example, promises to condense the time required to change from labor—intensive assembly work to industries that involve engineering, marketing, and design. Modern communications ”will give countries like China and Vietnam a huge advantage over countries stuck with old technology ”.

College Students… Job Hunting

In recent years, college students find it i ncreasingly difficult to get a job. It soun ds strange since young college students are usually intelligent, well-educated ph enomenon, aspirant and eager to bring th eir talent into full play. Then what underl ies the strange phenomenon?

There are several reasons for this. To be gin with, nowadays college students aim too high. All they want are ―

good‖ jobs which could offer good sala ry, comfortable working conditions, high social status among others. Consequentl y, most college students are unwilling to accept vacant jobs they consider not ―good‖ enough. Another reason is that t here is a big gap between the majors so me students study in school and the dem ands of vacant jobs. So companies think some students are not fit for the jobs. Solution to the problem requires efforts on both the society and the students. The companies should value the students, tal ent and knowledge while the latter shoul d not merely aim at material gains. They should be down-to–earth in building up their career. Furthermore, they should fa ce their weak points so as to improve the mselves and be more competent.

大学英语期末考试写作必背范文

Is It Better to Buy or Rent? The price of housing has kept increasing in recent years, which causes a big headache for people living in cities. A lot of people cannot afford to own a real estate property, so they choose to rent instead of buying an apartment. This group of people does not want to bear burden of mortgage so that they opt for a practical solution. Renting an apartment makes them have a place to stay and thus they can focus on work as well as personal life. Some other people, however, believe that an apartment owned by themselves makes them feel safe and relieved, so they are willing to sacrifice some other aspects of life to borrow money from the bank to buy an apartment. As far as I am concerned, to buy or to rent is all about it will be better to rent first and wait for the good timing when the price is going down to buy. Topic 2: On Job Hopping It seems that nowadays, very few young people are willing to stay in a job position for long, let alone for the whole life. They change jobs constantly. This results from several factors. Firstly, young people like fresh things, and it is easy for them to be fed up with old routine work. So when they stay in a position for a while, the excitement will fade out. They are quite realistic and not willing to waste time in a job they are not interested in. Thirdly, some young people are not satisfied with current salary, believing they deserve better pay. In my opinion, constant job hopping will not benefit young people in their career development. Every job has its own merits and young people can certainly learn something from it as long as they are patient and wise enough. Every job experience is valuable down the career path and young people shall be able to make the most of it. Topic 3: Online Social Network Modern people will be no stranger to online social network. Facebook, Renren and Kaixin001 are probably the most populous networks among Chinese netizen. In these networks, people interact with each other, be it a stranger or a friend, and have a lot of fun in the virtual world. This phenomenon could be a result of the fast development of the Internet and people's great interest of the virtual world. I think it is a very good new platform for people to keep in touch. But it should not be overused. Firstly, some people are addicted to it, which makes them want to get online 24 hours a day. When people spend too much time on one thing, they will naturally have not enough time for study and for work. Secondly, online social network change people's behavior of interacting with others. In virtual world, you just click the mouse and type in words instead of having a face-to-face talk. This will not benefit people's long term friendship, and even harm their interpersonal relationships in real world.
