the History of Marriage and FamilyLast week, I listened to a lecture about “Marriage and Family”. Today I would like to share its interesting content to all of you.Mankind has gone through more than 5 million years since ape-man. However, it was not until the year 1950 that China began to implement the policy of monogamy. What such a long period of time filled with is the evolution of marriage and family composition.The type of marriage can be summed up for five steps. In the first place, “Group Marriage”, in this stage, a woman could have a relationship with anybody she wanted, for instance, her boyfriend, her brother, her son, her father. Marriage was accepted between two different genders, no matter what family roles they were acting. In other words, their only distinction was about male or female, and had nothing to do with what roles they acted in a family. Today we will feel unbelievable for this phenomenon, which has really lasted for approximately 1 million years.Next, time goes by, a significant change appeared in the marriage of primitive. When one person chooses her partner, she will choose a boy who is as old as her. For the first time, the concept of family comes into the history of mankind. Blood relationship turns into the evidence for people to find her family relatives. Nevertheless, families of originalhuman have a greatly distinction with that of today’s. In the matriarchal society, children did not live with his father. That is to say, the concept of family member has not appeared.Soon after that, along of the larger range of human activities, the scope of marriage was extended, too. It was at this time that Exogamy marriage appeared. In ancient times in Hawaii, there was a very popular kind of marriage style, “Punaluya Marriage”, which meant peers could get married from different tribes. This phenomenon illustrates primitives gradually become stronger and more powerful.“Polygamous marriage”, which was the last form of marriage in primitive society. It mean s a man could be a woman’s main husband, similarly, a man could have his main wife too. But, strictly speaking, they are not solely belonged to each other. Because in the other hand, both of them may own many heterosexual lovers at the same time. Polygamous marriage is a symbol of the termination of intermarriage by blood.The root cause of emergence of monogamy is the continuous development of productive forces. Human have grasped to take advantage of natural conditions and tools to produce more things, which gradually produced a social division of labor. Obviously, the increasingly important role of men in production leads the status of women into a inferior position. Therefore, monogamy, which was be constitutedaccomplished by the appearance of patriarchal society, aimed to make sure children was born by the same father to inherit family property. The foundation of monogamy in ancient China can be traced back to the Western Zhou D ynasty. In China’s feudal society, not only did a man have one wife but also owned many concubines. However, h is wife’s standing was much higher than any one concubine. With no doubt, Wives had more rights than concubines too.Then, after the establ ishment of China, it was in 1950, “the marriage law of the People’s Republic of China” that Ch ina began to implement monogamy this policy.。
