With advancements in manufacturing and automation, we are able to produce goods at a faster rate and with greater precision. This has led to increased productivity and economic growth.However, with all these advancements come ethical considerations. As we continue to develop new technologies, we must also consider their impact on society and the environment. We must ensure that these advancements are used for the greater good and do not harm the planet or exploit vulnerable populations.In conclusion, science and technology have had a profound impact on our lives. From medicine to communication, transportation to manufacturing, these advancements have shaped our society in countless ways. However, as we continue to push the boundaries of what is possible, we must also consider the ethical implications of our actions. 科技英语的翻译技巧摘要: 科技英语作为一种重要的英语文体, 与非科技英语文体相比, 具有词义多、被动句多、词性转换多、非谓语动词多、专业性强等特点, 这些特点都是由科技文献的内容所决定的。
因此, 科技英语的翻译也有别于其它英语文体的翻译。
科技英语翻译必须遵循一定的翻译方法和翻译技巧。
本文从词性的转换; 句子成分的转换; 被动句的翻译等三个方面论述了科技英语翻译中的主要翻译技巧。
关键词: 英语; 科技英语; 翻译; 技巧Abstract: English for science and Technology as an important English style, compare with an other style of English, with multiple meaning , passive sentences, conversion of parts of speech, non predicate verb, professional and strong features, these features are decided by the literature of science and technology content. Therefore, the English translation of science and technology is different from other styles of English translation. Scientific English translation must follow the certain translation methods and skills of translation. This article discussed scientific and Technological English translation skills in three aspects: the part of speech conversion; conversion of sentence elements; translation of passive sentences. Key words: English; English for Science and Technology; English translation; skill;1 词性的转换英语属于印欧语系, 汉语属于汉藏语系, 这两种不同语系的语言无论在词汇方面或在语法方面都有很大的不同。
两者语法方面相差较大, 遣词造句及表达思想的方式亦有所差异。
就词性来说, 同一意思在不同语言中可以用不同词性来表达。
英语中有分词、冠词、动词不定式、动名词等, 而汉语没有这类词。
英语中的名词用得比汉语多。
因此, 在英汉翻译的过程中不宜拘泥于原文的词性对号入座, 而应根据汉语的行文习惯适当进行词性转换使译文通顺达意、自然流畅。
这样, 译文才能够在“忠实”于原文的同时, 亦符合汉语的表达习惯。
1. 1 形容词译成名词科技英语往往习惯用表示特征的形容词及其比较级来说明物质的特性, 因此, 翻译时可以在这类形容词词后加“度”“性”等词使之成为名词。
例如: As most metals are malleable and ductile, they can be beaten into plates and draw n into wire.由于大多数金属具有韧性和延展性, 所以它们可以压成薄板和拉成细丝。
Nylon is nearly twice as strong and much less affected by water than natural silk. 尼龙的强度几乎是天然丝的两倍, 且不象天然丝那样易受水的影响1. 2 动词译成名词常规的词性转换还有动词转译成名词, 这是因为英语中有一些动词的概念很难直接用汉语的动词来表达的缘故。
例如: It is well-known that neutrons act differently from protons.大家知道, 中子的作用与质子不同。
1. 3 名词译成形容词英语译成汉语时, 在忠实于原文的前提下, 为使译文通顺、易懂, 可以把名词译成形容词。
例如: In certain cases frictions is an absolute necessity.在一定场合下摩擦是绝对必要的。
1. 4 名词、形容词和介词译成动词英语中有许多含有动作意义的名词和由动词派生的名词, 可根据汉语动词使用的灵活性和广泛性的特点, 把名词、形容词和介词译成汉语动词。
例如: The acquaintance of science means mastering the law of nature.认识科学意味着掌握自然规律。
Rockets have found applications for the exploration of the universe.火箭已经用来探索宇宙( 名词译成动词)It is possible to cut all thread forms and sizes on a lathe.可以在车床上车削各种形状和尺寸的螺纹。
Doctors have said that they are sure they can save his life.医生们说他们肯定能救他的命( 形容词译成动词)In general, positive or negative rake tools can be used on stainless steel.通常, 正前角和负前角的刀具都可以用来加工不锈钢。
By radar people can see things beyond the visibility of them.利用雷达, 人们能看到视线以外的物体. ( 介词译成动词)总之, 科技英语翻译过程中常见的词性转换有名词、介词、形容词和副词转换为动词；代词、形容词以及动词转换为名词；副词转换为形容词和形容词转换为副词。
当然, 科技英语翻译中除了词性转换外, 还有句子成分的转换。
词性转换和句子成分的转换并非截然分开, 而是交织在一起的。
有时词性的转换必然伴随着句子成分的转换, 而句子成分的转换往往会产生词性的转换。
而转换的根源在于英汉两种语言在语法上、遣词造句方式及表达思想方式上的差异。
科技英语翻译中的词性转换问题并不是单一的能够按照某个或某些具体模式来处理的问题。
上述几种词性转换类型只是笔者在语言实践中归纳出的几种而已, 在科技英语翻译实践中, 还会遇到其它种类的词性转换,因此, 最根本的解决办法还是提高运用英汉两种语言遣词造句的能力。
2 句子成分的转换由于英语和汉语的表达方式不尽相同, 翻译时往往需要改变原文的语法结构, 所采用的主要方法是句子成分的转换。
进行科技英语翻译时, 在一定情况下适当改变原文中某些句子成分以达到译文逻辑正确、通顺流畅、重点突出等目的。
2. 1 宾语译成主语在科技英语翻译中, 为了符合汉语的表达方式,有时需要用原文中的宾语、介词宾语来更换原来的主语, 使译文重点突出、行文流畅。
例如: Hydrogen is found in many compounds.在许多化合物中都有氢。
A motor is similar to a generator in construct ion.电动机的结构与发电机类似。
Semi一conductor materials have poorer conductivity than conductors , but better conductivity than insulators.半导体材料的导电率比导体差, 但比绝缘体好。
2. 2 谓语译成宾语通过“把”“将”“使”“得到”“受到”“获得”“有了”等动词, 可使英语的谓语译成汉语的宾语。
例如: T he protective device has been greatly improved.保护装置的性能得到了很大的改善。
The sun affects tremendously both the mind and body of a man.太阳使人的身体和精神都受到极大的影响。
2. 3 定语译成谓语有时, 在充当定语的形容词或分词转译成动词时, 常常发生定语转译成谓语的情况。
这时原句中的主语常被译成定语, 谓语动词多被略去。
例如: Water has a greater heat capacity than sand.水的热容比沙大。
Neutron has a mass slightly larger than that of Proton.中子的质量略大于质子的质量。
2. 4 主语译成定语在句子成分的转换中, 主语转译成定语也是科技英语翻译时常用的方法之一。
例如: A large steam engine may have as much power capacity as 100, 000 horses. 大型蒸汽机的功率可达100, 00 马力。
Computers have hundreds of uses.计算机的用途不胜枚举。
2. 5 状语译成补语为了避免译句使读者感到生硬、别扭, 还可以把状语译成补语。
例如: Nylon is far stronger than rayon.尼龙比人造丝牢固得多。
All microbes are unvisibly small.所有微生物都小得看不见。
从以上讨论可以看出, 句子成分的转译显得变化万千, 异彩纷呈, 难于穷究。
几乎所有的句子成分都可互相转译, 而且句子成分的转换往往是和词类的转换密切相关的. 本文仅涉及到句子成分转换的一些主要内容. 读者可在翻译实践中, 正确理解英汉两种语言的差异, 恰如其分地运用转换技巧, 使译文恰到好处, 收到忠实、通顺的效果, 但没有必要由此画地为牢, 定出句型和格式以供翻译时套用。
3 被动句的翻译在英语中, 语态是动词的一种形式, 用来说明主语和谓语之间的关系. 英语动词的语态有两种: 主动语态( active voice) 和被动语态( passive voice) 。
英语中被动语态用得很多,尤其是在科技英语中使用非常频繁, 至少有1/ 3以上是用被动语态的。
这主要是因为: ( 1) 被动结构比主动结构更少主观色彩, 科技论著重客观事实, 正需要这种特性。
( 2) 被动结构更能突出主要论证, 说明对象, 引人注目。
( 3) 在很多情况下,被动结构比主动结构更简洁。
