You really can't love somebody to death. I've known people to die from no love, but I've never known anyone to be loved to death. We just can't love one another enough. A heart-warming story tells of a woman who finally decided to ask her boss for a raise in salary. All day she felt nervous and apprehensive. Late in the afternoon she summoned the courage to approach her employer. To her delight, the boss agreed to a raise. The woman arrived home that evening to a beautiful table set with their best dishes. Candles were softly glowing. Her husband had come home early and prepared a festive meal. She wondered if someone from the office had tipped him off, or did he just somehow know that she would not get turned down? She found him in the kitchen and told him the good news. They embraced and kissed, then sat down to the wonderful meal. Next to her plate the woman found a beautifully lettered note. It read, "Congratulations, darling! I knew you'd get the raise! These things will tell you how much I love you." Following the supper, her husband went into the kitchen to clean up. She noticed that a second card had fallen from his pocket. Picking it off the floor, she read, "Don't worry about not getting the raise! You deserve it anyway! These things will tell you

1惟独你不可取代 As a teenager,I felt I was always letting people down. I was rebellious1 out-side,but I wanted to be liked inside. Once I left home to hitch-hike2to California with my friend Penelope. The trip wasn‟t easy, and there were many times I didn‟t feel safe. One situation in particular kept me grateful to still be alive. When I returned home,I was different, not so outwardly sure of myself. I was happy to be home. But then I noticed that Penelope, who was staying with us,was wearing my clothes. And my family seemed to like her better than me. I wondered if I would be missed if I weren‟t there. I told my mom,and she explained that though Penelope was a lovely girl,no one could replace me. I pointed out,“She is more patient and is neater than I have ever been.” My mom said these were wonderful qualities, but I was the only person who could fill my role. She made me realize that even with my faults—and there were many-I was a loved member of the family who couldn‟t be replaced. I became a searcher, wanting to find out who I was and what made me unique. My view of myself was changing. I wanted a solid base to start from. I started to resist3pressure to act in ways that I didn‟t like any more, and I was delighted by who I really was. I came to feel much more sure that no one can ever take my place. Each of us holds a unique place in the world. You are special,no matter what others say or what you may think. So forget about being replaced. You can‟t be.

It had been clear from my pink freckled skin and my lack of enthusiasm for using the word "awesome" that I was from elsewhere. Asking me if I was a Brit, the woman then shared her expectation of the British ability to deliver . I muttered quietly, and it has to be said not with great confidence, that it will be good. I wish that I had been beside my American friend watching television on Friday. With virtually the whole nation, I was amazed, amused and filled with awe at British creativity and achievement. My own whingeing about tickets and our failings as a nation were simply superseded by the delight of history, spectacle and a parachuting monarch. I was proud to be British. Yet pride can be a difficult thing.

Some people say that society is the best school, which I think is considerably reasonable. Since 2005 when I walked out of my campus, I have learnt what I could never in school. Now I have known what is bitter and what is sweet, what is respect and what is endeavor(努力,尽力), what is giving and what is getting. In different backgrounds, I am playing different roles. Among different groups, I see different faces. Only then did I realize there would not be a word called "pure" in our society. Intangibly I often touch different eye expressions from many other people, which mirror kind of arrogance. They often shout at those who are in lower status roughly. Every time I see these men, "angry" can hardly convey my feelings. Deep out of my heart, I show a great sympathy on them. They are too piteous because they don't even know what is love and respect. Today no matter you are director of the board, manager, head of the department, or others with more authorities, there is no reason or right at all for you to look down upon anyone around you, because everyone has his own value to our society and their own self-esteem. Now maybe you are the director of the board, but without those with a lower status working painstakingly for you, how can you maintain your position so stably? Now maybe you are of great authority, but without the obedience of the public, how can you promote yourself with your so- called "authority"? In our world there exist some people living to their heart's content. They are primarily those kind and modest. Looking at the clean ground beneath your feet, you should know to own it to the environmental cleaners. Enjoying a decent house, you should know to own it to the constructors. Appreciating the toothsome food on the table, you should own it to the peasants industriously working on the farm. Maybe they inferior to you in terms of social status, but you can never look down upon them, for they are the greatest contributors in our society. Now however much money you possess, it

Some people think if you are happy, you are blind to reality. But when we research it, happiness actually raises every single business and educational outcome for the brain. How did we miss this? Why do we have these societal misconceptions(错误的想法) about happiness? Because we assumed you were average. When we study people, scientists are often interested in what the average is. If we study what is merely average, we will remain merely average. Many people think happiness is genetic. That's only half the story, because the average person does not fight their genes. When we stop studying the average and begin researching positive outliers -- people who are above average for a positive dimension like optimism or intelligence -- a wildly different picture emerges. Our daily decisions and habits have a huge impact upon both our levels of happiness and success. Scientifically, happiness is a choice. It is a choice about where your single processor brain will devote its finite resources as you process the world. If you scan for the negative first, your brain literally has no resources left over to see the things you are grateful for or the meaning embedded in your work. But if you scan the world for the positive, you start to reap an amazing advantage.

His body, when I found it, was lightly covered with snow. It snowed almost every day for the next four months, while I sat on the couch and watched it pile up. One morning, I shuffled downstairs and was startled to see a snowplow(雪犁,扫雪机) clearing my driveway and the bent back of a woman shoveling(铲) my walk. I dropped to my knees, crawled through the living room, and back upstairs so those good Samaritans would not see me. I was mortified(窘迫的) . My first thought was, how would I ever repay them? I didn't have the strength to brush my hair let alone shovel someone's walk. Before Jon's death, I took pride in the fact that I rarely asked for help or favors. I defined myself by my competence and independence. So who was I if I was no longer capable and busy? How could I respect myself if all I did was sit on the couch everyday and watch the snow fall? Learning how to receive the love and support that came my way wasn't easy. Friends cooked for me and I cried because I couldn't even help them set the table. "I'm not usually this lazy," I wailed. Finally, my friend Kathy sat down with me and said, "Mary, cooking for you is not a chore. I love you and I want to do it. It makes me feel good to be able to do something for you." Over and over, I heard similar sentiments(感情,情绪) from

These passions, like great winds, have blown me hither and thither(到处) , in a wayward(任性的,不规则的) course, ove r a deep ocean of anguish, reaching to the very verge of despair. I have sought love, first, because it brings ecstasy(狂喜,入迷) –ecstasy so great that I would often have sacrificed all the rest of life for a few hours of this joy. I have sought it, next, because it relieves loneliness--that terrible loneliness in which one shivering consciousness looks over the rim of the world into the cold unfathomable(深不可测的) lifeless abyss. I have sought it, finally, because in the union of love I have seen, in a mystic miniature, the prefiguring vision of the heaven that saints and poets have imagined. This is what I sought, and though it might seem too good for human life, this is what- at last- I have found. With equal passion I have sought knowledge. I have wished to understand the hearts of men. I have tried to apprehend(理解) the Pythagorean power by which number holds sway above the flu. A little of this, but not much, I have achieved. Love and knowledge, so far as they were possible, led upward toward the heavens. But always pity brought me back to earth. Echoes of cries of pain reverberate(回想,反响) in my heart.

Near the horizon it is always less bright, whilein the region immediately around the sun it is more or less yellow. The reasonof this is that near the horizon we look through a very great thickness of thelower atmosphere, which is full of the larger dust particles reflecting whitelight, and this diluter the pure blue of the higher atmosphere seen beyond,And inthe vicinity of the sun a good deal of the blue light is reflected back intospace by the finer dust, thus giving a yellowish tinge to that which reaches usreflected chiefly from the coarse dust of the lower atmosphere. At sunset andsunrise, however, this last effect is greatly intensified, owing to the greatthickness of the strata of air through which the light reaches us. The enormousamount of this dust is well shown by the fact that then only we can look full atthe sun, even when the whole sky is free from clouds and there is no apparentmist. But the sun’s rays then reach us after having passed, first, throughan enormous thickness of the higher strata of the air,the minute dust of whichreflects most of the higher strata of the air,the minute dust of which reflectsmost of the blue rays away from us,leaving the complementary yellow light topass on,

Next day, however, the former Tory MP and Times columnist Matthew Parris challenged the very idea of an exclusive gay identity, saying "the categorisation of a whole section of males as homosexuals, in inverted commas, or indeed heterosexuals, ditto, was simply a mistake. So sexual orientation is a lot more fluid than we have supposed. Mr Parris who often writes bravely and honestly about his own sexuality could never be accused of homophobia. But if he's right, then the whole notion of clearly identifiable gayness is questionable. If the concept does not really exist, Paul Oestreicher cannot usefully apply it to Jesus. 有关高中英语美文篇二 "I'm spiritual but I'm not religious" is now a commonplace among people in Britain, themajority of whose population live

Some days I would walk four blocks south to see Grandma and Grandpa. At eighty-six, Grandpa was still quite a gardener, so I always watched for his earliest blooms and each new wave of spring flowers. I was especially interested in flowers that year because I was planning to landscape my own yard and I was eager to get Grandpa's advice. I thought I knew pretty much what I wanted -- a yard full of bushes and plants that would bloom from May till November. It was right after the first rush of purple violets in the lawns and the sudden blaze of forsythia that spring that Grandpa had a stroke. It left him without speech and with no movement on his left side. The whole family rallied to Grandpa. We all spent many hours by his side. Some days his eyes were eloquent -- laughing at our reported mishaps, listening alertly, revealing painful awareness of his inability to care for himself. There were days, too, when he slept most of the time, overcome with the weight of his approaching death. As the months passed, I watched the growing earth with Grandpa's eyes. Each time I was with him, I gave him a garden report. He listened, gripping my hand with the sure strength and calm he had always had. But he could not answer my questions.
