2003年职称英语考试理工类A级卷

一、The writer learned from his grandparents that you are either honest or you are not; there is no middle ground. Honesty is a moral standard inside you, and you use it to judge the quality of your behavior. Honesty is in short supply. You must demand it of yourself. A good test of honesty involves three key principles: first, standing firmly for your convictions when confronted with pressure; second, always giving other people the praise they merit ; third, being honest and open about who you are. Self-respect and a clear conscience help make relationships with others stronger.

Americans are time-conscious people. They value time and save it carefully. Time is a real, precious resource to them so every minute must count. Foreigners may think Americans are always in a hurry and under pressure. Smiles, short conversations, and small exchanges with strangers don’t exist because Americans dislike “wasting”too much time. Americans assess others professionally rather than socially, so they start talking business immediately since they are always conscious of time. Americans work hard at saving time by producing a steady flow of labor-saving devices. They may have meetings using equipment like television screens and telephones rather than in person. Solving a problem or doing a job successfully with speed is taken as a sign of skillfulness. The more important the job, the more time and effort Americans will pour into it.美国人在时间意识的人。

For each question or statement there are 4 choices marked A, B, C and D. You should make the correct choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center. Most of us grow up taking certain things for granted. We tend to assume that experts and religious leaders tell us “the truth”. We tend to believe that things advertised on television or in newspapers can’t be bad for us.However, encouragement of critical thinking in students is one of the goals of most colleges and universities. Few professors require students to share the professors’ own beliefs. In general, professors are more concerned that students learn to question and critically examine the arguments of others, including some of their own beliefs or values. This does not mean that professors insist that you change your beliefs, either. I t does mean, however, that professors will usually ask you to support the views you express in class or in your writing. If your premises (前提) are shaky, or if your arguments are not logical, professors personally point out the false reasoning in your arguments. Most professors want you to learn to recognize the premises of your arguments, to examine whether you really accept these premises, and to understand whether or not you draw logical conclusions. Put it this way: Professors don’t tell you what to think; they try to teach you how to think. On the other hand, if you intend to disagree with your professors in class, you should be prepared to offer a strong argument in support of your ideas. Arguing just for the sake of arguing usually does not promote a critical examination of ideas. Many professors interpret it as rudeness.36. In the first paragraph, the writer tries to tell us that people _______.A、easily accept certain things without a second thoughtB、grow up through learning certain things in lifeC、are forming their views during their growthD、have strong beliefs in authorities while getting old37. Nowadays, most colleges and universities encourage students to ____________.A、criticize othersB、share professors’ beliefsC、give their own ideasD、change their own beliefs38. The word “shaky” (Line 1, Para.3) most probably means “___________”.A、creativeB、firmC、falseD、weak39. To help students develop their critical thinking, professors mainly teach them ____________.A、choice of their premisesB、the way to think independentlyC、skills of drawing conclusionsD、different kinds of arguments40. According to the writer, the right way to argue is to _____________.A、argue mainly for the sake of arguingB、prove it with a good conclusionC、support your idea with sound reasoningD、examine others’ ideas criticallyTask 2Directions: This task is the same as Task 1. The 5 questions or unfinished statements are numbered 41 to 45.Human cloning (克隆) technology could be used to reverse heart attacks. Scientists believethat they may be able to treat heart attack victims by cloning their healthy heart cells and injecting them into the areas of the heart that have been damaged, and other problems may be solved if human cloning and its technology are not forbidden. With cloning, infertile couples could have children. Current treatments for infertility, in terms of percentages (百分比),are not very successful. Couples go through physically and emotionally painful procedures for a small chance of having children. Many couples run out of time and money without successfully having children. Human cloning could make it possible for many more infertile couples to have children than ever more.We should be able to clone the bone marrow (骨髓) for children and adults suffering from leukemia(白血病). This is expected to be one of the first benefits to come from cloning technology. We may learn how to switch cells on and off through cloning and thus be able to cure cancer. Cloning technology can be used to test for and perhaps cure gene related diseases. The above is just a few examples of what human cloning technology can do for mankind. This new technology promises unprecedented advancement in medicine if people will release their fears and let the benefits begin.41. Heart attacks can be treated with human cloning technology by ___________.A、removing the damaged part of the heartB、replacing the old heart with a cloned oneC、repairing the heart with cells cloned from healthy onesD、giving the patients injections of various medicines42. The word “infertile” (Line 1, Para.2) most probably means “_________”.A、unable to give birth to a childB、with physical and emotional problemsC、short of time and moneyD、separated from each other for long43. According to the passage, one of the first expected benefits from cloning technology may be in __________.A、the treatment of heart attacksB、the bearing of babiesC、the cure of blood diseasesD、the detection of gene related diseases44. Cancer may be cured with the cloning technology by _________.A、attacking the diseased called with healthy onesB、controlling the growth of the cellsC、detecting disordered genes in the cancer cellsD、activating cancer cells by switching them on45. According to the writer, the main problem with the development of human cloning technology is that _______.A、it may be out of human controlB、it has brought about few benefits so farC、people still know little about itD、people are afraid of such technologyTask 3Directions: The following is an advertisement. The most important of these engineers was Isambard Kingdom Brunel, whose work in shipping, bridge-building, and railway construction, to name just three fields, both challenged and motivated his colleagues. He was the driving force behind a number of the hugely ambitious projects, some of which resulted in works which are still in use today. The son of an engineer, Brunel apprenticed with his father at an early age on the building of the Thames Tunnel. At the age of just twenty, he became engineer in charge of the project. This impressive plan to bore under the Thames twice suffered two major disasters when the river broke through into the tunnel when the second breach(决口)ourredin 1872, Brunel was seriously injured during rescue operation and further work was halted. While recovering from his injuries, Brunel entered a design petition for a new bridge over the Avon Gorge near Clifton. The original judge of the petition was Thomas Telford, a leading civil engineer of his day, who rejected all entries to the petition in favor of his own design. After considerable scandal, a second contest was held and Brunel's design was aepted. For reasons of funding, however, exacerbated(加剧) by social unrest in Bristol, the project was abandoned in 1843 with only the towers pleted. After Brunel’s death, it was decided to begin work on it again, partly so that the bridge could form a fitting memorial to the great engineer. The entire structure was finally pleted in 1864. Today, the well-known Clifton Suspension Bridge is a symbol of Bristol, just as the Opera House is of Sydney. Originally intended only for horse-drawn traffic, thebridge now bears over four million motor vehicles a year.16.【题干】Brunel was an important airplane engineer in Britain during the Industrial Revolution.A.RightB.WrongC.Not mentioned17.【题干】Brunel was involved less in railway construction than in other engineering fields.A.RightB.WrongC.Not mentioned18.【题干】Brunel worked only on shipping, bridge-building and railway construction.A.RightB.WrongC.Not mentioned19.【题干】Brunel work was largely ignored by his colleagues.A.RightB.WrongC.Not mentioned20.【题干】Some projects Brunel contributed to arestill in use today.A.RightB.WrongC.Not mentioned21.【题干】Brunel became an apprentice with his father when he was very young.A.RightB.WrongC.Not mentioned22.【题干】The Thames Tunnel project was more difficult than any previous projects undertaken in Britain.A.RightB.WrongC.Not mentionedCCBBAACGeothermal(地热)Energy1 Since heat naturally moves from hotter regions to cooler ones, the heat from the earth's center flows outwards towards the surface. In this way, it transfers to the next layer of rock. If the temperature is high enough, some of this rock melts and forms magma(岩浆). The magma ascends in its turn towards the earth's surface. It often remains well below the earth's surface, creating vast areas of hot rock. In such regions, there are deep cracks, which allow rainwater to descend underground. Some of the heated rainwater travels back up to the earth's surface where it will appear as a hot spring. However, if this ascending hot water reaches a layer of impermeable(不可渗透的)rock, it remains trapped, forming a geothermal reservoir. Ifgeothermal reservoirs are close enough to the surface, they can be reached by drilling wells. Hot water and steam shoot up the wells naturally, and can be used to produce electricity in geothermal power plants.2.A few geothermal power plants depend on dry-stem reservoirs which produce steam but little or no water. In these cases, the steam is piped up directly to provide the power to spin a turbine generator. The first geothermal power plant, constructed at Lardarello in Italy, was ofthis type, and is still producing electricity today.3.Most currently operating geothermal power plants are either "flash" steam plants or binary(双重的)plants. Flash plants produce mainly hot water ranging in temperature from 300° to 700°Fahrenheit. This water is passed through one or two separators where released from the pressure of the underground reservoir, it "flashes" or boils into steam Again, the force of this steam provides the energy to spin the turbine and produce electricity. The geothermal water and steam are then reinjected directly back down into the earth to maintain the volume and pressure of the reservoir. Gradually they will be reheated and can then be used again.4.A r eservoir with temperatures below 300° Fahrenheit is not hot enough to flash steam but it can still be used to generate electricity in binary fluid. The steam fromthis is used to power the turbines. As in the flash steamplant, the geothermal water is recycled back into the reservoir.。

第一篇Eta CarinaeAs possibly the galaxy’s (银河) most massive star, Eta Carinae is now engaging in some very unusual behaviour. Australian astronomers, being in the Southern Hemisphere (半球), are able to observe it clearly. In the 19th century, Eta Carinae was for a time the third brightest star in the sky. It has now become less bright so that binoculars (双筒望远镜 )are needed to see it. “It seems to be brightening and becoming less bright over a period of many years”, said Dr Bob Duncan from the Australia Telescope National Facility. While it is not unusual for stars to vary in brightness, the period is usually much shorter. “Since 1992 it has become four times brighter, andthen last year it began to drop dramatically,” he said. The problem in observing Eta Carinae is that it has been surrounded by a cloud of gas and dust, making it hard to see the star directly. However, radio wavesand infrared light (红外线)can pass through this cloud, so telescopes that receive these wavelengths can observe what is occurring.Eta Carinae is of particular interest to astronomers because it seems to be in its death throes(剧痛). Being so large it will end up as a supernova (超新星). There has not been a supernova in our galaxy since the invention of the telescope. While a 1987 explosion ina nearby galaxy gave astronomers plenty of valuable data, they are hungry for an even closer look.Eta Carinae has other unique features, and is theonly star known to produce an ultraviolet(紫外线)laser that is brighter than that produced by the Sun. Lasers have been observed in other frequencies from a few stars.31. Eta Carinae is now engaging inA. some very common behaviourB. some very dull behaviourC. some very frightening behaviour.D. some very strange behaviour32. The word “period” in Paragraph 3 me ans the length of timeA. over which star vary in brightnessB. for which Eta carinae’s brightening lasts.C. Eta carinae takes to become a supernova.D. it takes the laser from Eta carinae to travel to the earth.33. Eta Carinae is hard to observe becauseA. it is too far away.B. there is too much dust and gas around it.C. the binoculars are not powerful enough.D. it does not send out infrared light.34. Astronomers are particularly interested in Eta Carinae becauseA. it is in its final stage.B. it is a supernova.C. it exploded in 1987.D. it is brighter than the sun.35. Which of the following statements about Eta Carinae is NOT true?A. It will end up as a supernova.B. It can be seen only through binoculars.C. It is the only star that sends out an ultraviolet laser.D. Its ultraviolet laser is brighter than that of the Sun.。

A Dolphin and an AstronomerOne day in 1963, a dolphin named Elvar and a famous astronomer, Carl Sagan, were playing a little game. The astronomer was visiting an institute which was looking into the way dolphins communicate with each other. Sagan was standing on the edge of one of the tanks where several of these friendly, highly intelli gent creatures were kept. Elvar had just swum up alongside him and had turned o n his back. The dolphin wanted Sagan to scratch his stomach again, as the astronomer ha d done twice before. Elvar looked up at Sagan, waiting. Then, after a minute or so, the dolphin leapt up through the water and made a sound just like the word “more”. The astonishe d astronomer went to the director of the institute andtold him about the incident. ‘Oh, yes. That’s one of the words he knows,’ th e director said, showing no surprise at all.Dolphins have bigger brain in proportion to their body size than humans hav e, and it has been known for a long time that they can make a number of sounds. What is more, these sounds seem to have different functions, such as warning e ach other of danger. Sound travels much faster and much further in water than i t does in air. That is why the parts of the brain that deal with sound are much better developed in dolphin than in humans. But can it be said that dolphins h ave a ‘language’, in the real sense of the word? Scientists don’t agree on t his.A language is not just a collection of sounds, or even words. A language ha s a structure and what we call a grammar. The structure and grammar of a langua ge help to give it meaning. For example, the two questions “Who loves Mary?” and “Who does Mary love?” mean very different things. If y ou stop to think ab out it, you will see that this difference doesn’t come from the words in the q uestion but from the difference in structure. That is why the question “Can do lphins speak?” can’t be answered until we find out if dolphins not only make sounds but also arrange them in a grammatical order which affects their meanin g.16 The astronomer was not interested in the way dolphins communicate with e ach other.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned17 The dolphin leapt up into the air because Sagan was too near the water.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned18 Parts of the dolphin’s brain are particularly well developed to handle different kinds of sound.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned19 Dolphins are the most useful animals to humans.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned20 Dolphins travel faster in water than any other animals.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned21 Some scientists believe that dolphins have a language of their own.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned22 Sounds can be called a language only when they have a structure and a gr ammar.
