Book 6 Unit 3 Reading Advice from GrandadLesson planMaterial:The passage is a letter from Jame s’granddad, who wants to encourage James to quit smoking. The main body of the letter is made up of three parts, grandad’s healthy life, how people get addicted to cigarettes and the harmful effects of smoking. To the end of the letter was attached the advice on stopping smoking.Prior knowledge:Most of the students have already been well informed of the bad effects of smoking and the importance of living a healthy life. As for the advice, it will probably not be echoed by the students since almost all of them are non-smokers. Compared with it, for the good of their own health, the harmful effects on non-smokers, the environment, public safety, etc can be a suitable topic to be discussed deeply based on their prior knowledge and what they are going to learn in this passage.Learning aims:1. Students are able to understand the topic and grandad’s intention of writing the letter.2. Students are able to acquire all the necessary information that granddad lists to helpJames quit smoking, form the logical connections among the information (like between grandad’s healthy life and the ways of getting addicted) and make brief comments as well.3. Students are able to list more harmful effects of smoking on non-smokers, theenvironment, public safety, and so on. While listing, they are able to use the following expressions:do damage to…; It is difficult to…; find it difficult to…; affect the health…;manage to…; etc.4. Based on the effects students have listed, they are able to come up measures to reducethe harmful effects for the good of both the smokers and themselves.Teaching difficulties:1. Help the students form the logical connections among the information mentioned in theletter.2. Give necessary suggestions to help students list more harmful effects and use the targetlanguage to express their own opinions.Teaching process:Lead in: Show the class a packet of cigarettes and ask the following questions:1. Does anyone smoke? Why?2. But there are quite a number of teenagers smoking around us? What do you think ofit?Step1: Get the students to read the title on page 14 and the subtitle on page 15.What is the purpose of the letter?Step2: Get the students to scan paragraph3 for the key information and form the logical connections:1. What does granddad mainly talk about in paragraph 1?2. Why does he tell James how healthy and active he is now?3. What are the three ways of getting addicted to cigarettes and what are they like?4. Do you think the advice attached to the letter helpful? Would James accept it?Step3: Get the students to scan paragraph4 for the harmful effects of smoking: What is the main reason for quitting smoking? (It has many harmful effects)List the harmful effects of smoking:Do damage to…It was difficult to…Affect the health of…Affect the relationship (inference)Can’t enjoy sportQuestions for critical thinking:1. Does granddad deeply talk about how cigarette smoke affect the health ofnon-smokers?2. Apart from these effects, can you think of more on smokers, non-smokers,environmental protection, public safety, etc, using the expressions mentioned above? Step4: Find solutionsSince the World No tobacco Day was created in 1987, there has been a theme for the Day each year, for example:2001 Second-hand smoke kills2002 Tobacco-free sports2005 Health professionals against tobacco2007 Smoke-free inside2009 Tobacco health warnings2015 Ban illegal tobacco products tradeWhat will be the theme for 2016? Design a possible theme of your own, and explain what can be done to reduce the harmful effects and protect ourselves.Homework:Suppose you were attending your sister’s wedding. If someone gave you a cigarette, would you accept it?精美句子1、善思则能“从无字句处读书”。

BDo you look like your name? Scientists say there’s a good chance you do.This comes from a new study published in the Journal ofPersonality and Social Psychology. Researchers from Israel foundthat our given names may carry social stereotypes(成见), which canbe seen in our facial appearance.Lead author Yonat Zwebner of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, along with her team, carried out eight separate studies involving hundreds of participants in Israel and France. The different experiments were set up to answer two main questions: whether people can accurately guess a person’s name based only on a headshot and what is behind this matching effect.During the experiments, researchers asked students to look at photos of people’s faces and guess each person’s name from a list of four choices. The participants correctly guessed the right name 38 percent of the time, which was better than the 25 percent rate of a random one-in-four guess. What’s more, the students were able to best match the faces to the names when the faces they looked at came from within their own culture. French students were better at matching only French names and faces while Israeli students were better at matching only Hebrew names and Israeli faces.Researchers believe it is possible that people change their appearance without being aware of it, to match social norms(规范)carried by their names. One study in particular backed up this idea, showing that a hairstyle, something that can be changed by individuals easily, was enough to guide people in accurately guessingtheir names. The results of the experiments may even make parents think twice when choosing a name for their child.【语篇概述】“人如其名”是中国的一句老话, 而近期科学家的一项研究表明, 名字或许真的能改变人的容貌。
