Class Exercise 5 p172
Put the items into different categories and then discuss them in more detail, in the same way as we saw in the part-time job writing.
Categorization p169
Categorization is the process in which ideas and objects are recognized, differentiated, and understood. People use categorization as a way to make sense of what is around them, especially when they feel overwhelmed with information. Research has demonstrated that people remember things much better if they are categorized and the type of categorization does not really matter.
As you can see, I live within easy commuting distance of your premises and can, therefore, easily attend an interview at a time to suit you. I can be contacted on 034 342305 or JS@.
Dear Sir RE: Technical Sales Opportunities I am currently seeking employment as a [job title] and understand that you employ people with my background, which includes 10 years experience as a [job title] with [old employers name] and so thought you may be interested in my application/me. Please find a copy of my CV/resume enclosed. I would be grateful if you would consider me for any current or future vacancies that might arise.
The writing can be improved by categorizing part-time jobs as follows: • Pay rates • Training and experience requirements • Interest/suitability to the worker Class exercise: List the categories used and the type of work, in the amended paragraph. Are they all main categories or are some sub categories? …. enjoy talking to people …. …. like to find their own customers …. …. [prefer] customers to find them …. …. around people [but not selling] …. …. enjoy providing service to the public …. …. prefer less contact with public …. …. like to keep neat and clean ….
Exercise 2 p170
Come up with three different ways to categorize a collection of books.
Category Order
The category order should match your thesis statement, which should be the basis of all your categorizing efforts.
I look forward to your response.
Yours sincerely

From the age of 7, we begin to automatically do this.

They award a green label to products that meet certain environmental criteria. From Greek kritērion 'means of judging', from kritēs - critic

People: Possible criteria!

If your categories have a single point in common and if it goes hand in hand with your thesis, you can even choose categories that vary hugely. There should not be too many categories in an essay, as it can significantly decrease the value of every category included. It is common practice to keep the most important one as the last category.
