When I was a little boy aged two, my mom agreed to let me take a short ride and that was it! From then on, I drove my parents crazy begging for a horse. When I was four, I had mutism, in which children stop speaking in certain social situations. I went days, weeks, months without a sound at school. At most, I might quietly whisper to a friend. I suffered silently through school until I was ten when a psychologist (心理学家) had an idea. He asked me what I wanted more than anything else in the world. He explained I was going to be given a chance to work for that. And I was permitted to whisper the answer in my mother’s ear, “A horse.”I was to get a pony, but I had to live up to my end of the bargain (讲价). I had a list of weekly tasks I had to finish. I had to answer the phone five timesper week, something I had never done before. I had to say one word to my teacher at school and the list went on. For a child with mutism, saying one word to someone can be like climbing Mount Qomolangma. I did everything that was asked of me and the day came. His name was Sequoia, whom I fell in love with immediately. When I was in Sequoia’s presence, I forgot all about my problems and felt strong and secure.I am a fully participating member of society these days. My horse and I made it through a master’s degree. I may have made it otherwise, but I’m not sure. I feel I owe my life to the horse and I try to give it back to him. He has given me the best gift I could ever imagine, my life.9.What was the situation like when the author was four?A.He didn’t say a word at all.B.He learned how to ride a horse.C.He found his classmates unfriendly.D.He had difficulty in communicating.10. What can we infer about the author from Paragraph 3?A.He completed some tasks easily.B.He pushed himself extremely hard.C.He fell in love with Sequoia gradually.D.He found the psychologist’s idea useless.11. What is the author’s purpose of writing the text?A.To share his unfortunate childhood.B.To give tips on how to cure mutism.C.To show his deep gratefulness to his horse.D.To encourage kids struggling against mutism.DFor most city people, the elevator is an unremarkable machine that inspires none of the enthusiasm or interest that Americans afford trains, jets, and even bicycles. Dr. Christopher Wilk is a member of a small group of elevator experts who consider this a misunderstanding. Without the elevator, they point out, there could be no downtown skyscrapers or tall buildings, and city life as we know it would be impossible. In that sense, they argue, the elevator's role in American history has been no less significant than that of cars. In fact, according to Wilk, the car andthe elevator have been locke d in a “secret war” for over a century, with cars making it possible for people to spread horizontally (水平地), and elevators pushing them toward life in close groups of towering vertical (垂直的) columns. If we tend to ignore the significance of elevators, it might be because riding in them tends to be such a brief, boring, and even awkward experience—one that can involve unexpectedly meeting people with whom we have nothing in common, and an unpleasant awareness of the fact that we’re hanging from a cable in a long passage. In a new book, Lifted, German journalist and cultural studies professor Andreas Bernard directed all his attention to this experience, studying the origins of elevator and its relationship to humankind and finding that riding in an elevator has never been a totally comfortable experience. “After 150 years, we are still not used to it,” Bernard said. “We still have not exactly learned to cope with the mixture of closeness and displeasure.”That mixture, according to Bernard, sets the elevator ride apart from just about every other situation we find ourselves in as we go about our lives.Today, as the world's urban population explodes, and cities become more crowded, taller, and more crowded, America’s total number of elevators—900,000 at last count, according to Elevator World magazine’s “2012 Vertical Transportation Industry”—are a force that’s becoming more important than ever. And for the people who really, really love them, it seems like high time that we looked seriously at just what kind of force they are.12.What does the underlined word “ this ” in Paragraph 1 refer to?A.The general view of elevators.B.The particular interests of experts.C.The desire for a remarkable machine.D.The enthusiasm for transport vehicles.13. The author’s purpose in mentioning cars is_____.A.to contrast their functions with elevators'B.to emphasize the importance of elevatorsC.to reveal their secret war against elevatorsD.to explain people’spreference for elevators14. According to Prof. Bernard, what has made the elevator ride different from otherlife experiences? A.Vertical direction. ckof excitement.C.Little physical space.D.Uncomfortableconditions.15. The author urges readers to consider______.A.the exact number of elevator loversB.the serious future situationof elevatorsC.the role of elevators in city developmentD.the relationship between cars and elevators第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

AEuropeans s hould try to stay indoors if ash from Iceland's volcano starts settling, the World Health Organization warned Friday as small amounts fell in Iceland, Scotland and Norway.WHO spokesman Daniel Epstein said the microscopic(微小的) ash is potentially dangerous for people when it starts to reach the Earth because inhaled(吸入) particles can enter the lungs and cause respiratory problems. And he also said Europeans who go outside might want to consider wearing a mask.Other experts, however, weren't convinced the volcanic ash would have a major effect on peoples' health and said WHO's warnings were "hysterical." They said volcanic ash was much less dangerous than cigarette smoke or pollution. Volcanic ash is made of fine particles of fragmented volcanic rock. It is light gray to black and can be as fine as talcum powder. During a volcanic eruption, the ash can be breathed deep into the lungs and cause irritation even in healthy people. But once it falls from a greater distance — like from the cloud currently hovering above Europe — its health effects are often minimal, experts say."Not all particles are created equal," said Ken Donaldson, a professor of respiratory toxicology at the University of Edinburgh, "In the great scheme of things, volcanic ash is not all that harmful." And he said most Europeans' exposure to volcanic ash would be negligible and that only those in the near districts of the Icelandic volcano would likely be at risk.Dr. Stephen Spiro, a professor of respiratory medicine and deputy chair of the British Lung Foundation, said the further the particles travel, the less dangerous they will be. "The cloud has already passed o ver northern Scotland and we haven't heard of any ill effects there," he said. Spiro said to wear masks or stay indoors to avoid volcanic ash was "over the top" and "a bit hysterical."1. The text is mainly about ______.A. the effect of volcanic ashB. the health risk of volcanic ashC. the disadvantages of volcanic ashD. the opinions on health risk of volcanic ash2. Which one is true according to Paragraph3?______.A. The volcanic ash’s effects on Europeans were little.B. The ash caused irritation even in healthy people.C. Other experts thought WTO’S warnings were useful.D. The volcanic ash was more dangerous than cigarette smoke or pollution.3. The underlined word “hysterical” in Paragraph3 most probably means ______.A. amazingB. practicalC. valuableD. overstated4. What can we learn from the passage?______.A. The volcanic ash wouldn’t be harmful to people.B. All experts thought the volcanic ash did great harm to our health.C. People close to the volcano would likely be at risk according to some experts.D. Europeans should stay indoors because Iceland's volcano starts settling.BToo much tourism can be a problem. If tourism grows too quickly, people must leave other jobs to work in the tourism industry. This means that other parts of the country’s economy can suffer. On the other hand, if there is not enough tourism, people can lose jobs. Businesses can also lose money. It costs a great deal of money to build large hotels, airports, air terminals, first- class roads, and other support facilities(配套设施)needed by tourist attractions. For example, a major international class tourism hotel can cost as much as 50 thousand dollars per room to build. If this room is not used most of the time, the owners of the hotel lose money.Building a hotel is just a beginning. There must be many support facilities as well, including roads toget to the hotel, electricity, sewers to handle waste, and water. All of these support facilities cost money. If they are not used because there are not enough tourists , jobs and money are lost.5.Too much tourism can cause all these problems EXCEPT ________ .A. a bad effect on other industriesB. a change of tourists’ customsC. over - crowdedness of places of interestD. pressure on traffic。
