Mark but this flea, and mark in this,How little that which thou deniest me is;It sucked me first, and now sucks thee,And in this flea our two bloods mingled be;Thou know’st that this cannot be saidA sin, nor shame, nor loss of maidenhead.Yet this enjoys before it woo,And pampered swells with one blood made of two;And this, alas, is more than we would do.

所谓玄学奇喻,也就是“将很明显的两个毫不相关的主题以一种奇妙的、匪夷所思的方式联系在一起,进行比喻”,即“a combination of dissimilar images,or discovery of occult resemblances in things apparently unlike.”(塞缪尔.

The flea

The flea

Her name is Ann.We grew up together. And I’m Charles.I was the third son of my father—the king of this country. Unlike my two elder brothers , they loved riding on the horse and hunting all the day. My favorite thing was reading. I liked reading various kinds of books, especially reading with Ann. Ann was the daughter of my wet nurse. She had been with me since I could remember. She loved reading, too. I always bought lots of books that my mother gave me to her, her smile was the most beautiful article to me. I liked staying with her, which made me feel that time always goes away within a twinkle of eye.And I’m sure Ann had the same thought.I really hoped that time could still and life could always be so calm. However, one day my entourage told me that Ann would marry another person, a person she had never seem before. I rushed to Ann. I can’t wait any second. I called out in my heart: No!I finally stood in front of her, but my heart frozen with her indifference. Ann was seating by her table with her hand holding the gills, seeming to be thinking something when I rushe into the door. And it seemed that there’s a moment of trance in her beautiful eyes when she turned to see me. Was it just an illusion? Because she almost immediately said to me:“ Charles, you certainly have heared this, we can’t be together, you know.” “Why? Why you said these? I can’t believe it!” I blurted at once. But she did not move at all by my reaction. Just then I saw a flea. This flea sucked my blood first, then jumped to Ann and sucked hers. An inspiration suddenly stroke me. I motioned for her to see this flea:“ Look at this, Ann, this flea suckee my blood first, then sucked yours, and our blood have already mingled in this flea. You know this can not be said, it’s the loss of a sin, a shame, and maidenhead. The flea sucked our blood without our consent, it become paunchy after enjoying our blood, oh dear, this is more than we could do. Please don’t deny my love.” However, Ann raised her hand and want to kill the flea, “ Charles, my mother can’t agree with us for you are prince while I’m just a servant.”“ Oh, no! Stop! Don’t kill it! Ann, there are three lives in this flea, yours, mine, and the flea itself. I t’s body is not only the witness of our marriage, but also our marriage bed and marriage temper, though parents are reluctant towards our love, though you want to deny my love, we still met together and hid in it’s body. You may tend to kill this flea but don’t do that, or you will be the murder, and you will kill yourself too, that’s an sacrilege as there are three sins in it’s body.” However, the reality is always cruel, Ann still killed it. “Oh, how cruel you are, you killed the flea without hesitation, it just sucked your blood, your nail has been purpled with the blood of innocence.”“Charles, neither you and I will become weaker because of this flea’s sucking.” Ann said this. My heart broken but immediately I realized, “It’s true, Ann, so your worry is nothing. Just accept my love, it will have no effect on your reputation. You won’t lose the honor, as this flea’s death makes no loss in your life.”Ann smiled.。

Donne was appointed private secretary to Sir Thomas Egerton, Keeper of the Great Seal, in 1598. His secret marriage in 1601 to Egerton's niece, Anne More, resulted in his dismissal from this position and in a brief imprisonment. During the next few years Donne made a meager living as a lawyer.

◆Metaphysical Poetry
• Part Two adopts another aspect of Tesauro’s “Theory of Conceit”. It explores how Donne uses images to express his contradictory feeling.
– Metaphysical Poetry is characterized by fantastically mysticism.
• Metaphysical poetry is a kind of realistic, often ironic and witty, verse combing intellectual ingenuity and psychological insight written partly in reaction to the conventions of Elizabethan love poetry by such seventeenthcentury poets as John Donne, George Herbert, Richard Crashaw , Thomas Traverse , and Andrew Marvell.
• The Metaphysical were out of critical favor for the 18th and 19th centuries (obviously, the Romantic poets found little in this heavily intellectualized poetry). • At the end of the 19th century and in the beginning of the 20th century, interest in this group picked up, and especially important was T.S. Eliot's famous essay "The Metaphysical Poets" (1921).
• Interest peaked this century with the New Critics school around mid-century, and now is tempering off a bit, though Donne, the original "Big Name" is being super ceded now by interest in George Herbert, who's religious seeking and questioning seems to be hitting a critical nerve.
delivering sermons that are regarded as the most brilliant and eloquent of his time.◆Sumary of The Flea
This poem is about the speaker used a flea as a bridge that made him and his mistress combine to become one. The listener "thou" was his lover. He loved her very much and even wants to make love with her, but she didn't.
• Part One explores the representative different viewpoints about conceit as a literary device and the specialties of each theory in the analysis of Donn e ’s conceits. In this part, conceit is more attached to Treasure’s “Theory of Conceit” connected with its origin, and its uniqueness as a literary device.
◆Donne's principal literary accomplishments during this period were Divine Poems (1607) and the prose work Biathanatos (c. 1608, posthumously published 1644), a half-serious extenuation of suicides, in which he argued that suicide is not intrinsically sinful.

Introduction to John Donne
● The leading figure of the
metaphysical school
Donne was born in London to a prominent Roman Catholic family.
At the age of 11 he entered the University of Oxford, where he studied for three years. According to some accounts, he spent the next three years at the University of Cambridge but took no degree at either university. He began the study of law at Lincoln's Inn, London, in 1592, and he seemed destined for a legal or diplomatic career.
◆Conceit
• John Donne, one of the most influential figures among Metaphysical poets, has been famous for his special use of conceit. This thesis endeavors to make a brief study on the characteristics of Donne’s conceits in The Flea.
◆Translation of The Flea
