AClaude Sammut, a professor of computer science and engineering at the University of New South Wales in Australia, said it would soon be possible for robots to defeat the stars of the future. For many years, Mr Sammut has been a member of a project called RoboCup, where robots have been programmed to learn how to play football and compete against others in a football match. As he explains, the robots are having difficulty in learning how to control the ball and move the ball on their own, but he is still full of confidence that one day in the future they will show the same skills as Wayne Rooney, who is one of the best football players in the world.Mr Sammut also said, “In 1968, John McCarthy and Donald Michie made a bet with David Levy, who was then the chess champion in Scotland, that within 10 years a computer program would be able to beat him. It took a little bit longer than 10 years (nearly 30 years) but eve ntually such programs came into being.”“In the same spirit of a grand challenge, RoboCup aims to develop a team of robots that can defeat the world soccer champion team by the year 2050. To achieve this, or come even closer to the ambition, the robots will have to be able to sense and act in completely unstructured environments. This will require major advances in perception (感知), decision-making, learning, and co-operative behaviors. Considering robots are integrated hardware and software systems, great advances will also be needed in sensors (传感器), energy storage, and materials.”

1.The RoboCup is aimed to develop robots that know how to ________.A.paly computer football gamesB.paly football and win in real matchesC.understand the rules of the football gameD.improve the skills of real football players解析:选B细节理解题。

根据第二段“...where robots have been programmed to learn how to play football and compete against others in a football match.”

2.What kind of difficulty are the robots facing in playing football?A.They can't run as fast as real people.B.They can't recognize their partners accurately.C.They can't control the ball well by themselves.D.They can't pass the ball to their partners.

根据第三段“...the robots are having difficulty in learning how to control the ball and move the ball on their own ...”

3.The idea of designing a computer program that could defeat a chess champion came forth ________.A.in 1968B.in 1978C.in the 1990sD.30 years ago解析:选A细节理解题。

根据第四段“In 1968, John McCarthy and Donald Michie made a bet with DavidLevy, who was then the chess champion in Scotland ...”

4.We can conclude from Mr Sammut's words that ________.A.many parts of robots still need improvingB.robots would be smarter than human beings in the near futureC.robots have more ambitions than human beingsD.robots would take control of the world解析:选A推理判断题。

BIn the future, when robots can be used both in homes and in other areas, they could improve the living standards of people. Many people burn their energy on their day-to-day tasks like cooking, cleaning after work, etc. When robots can complete such jobs, people can spend more time with their family and friends. Experts say that many major problems in the modern world are caused by miscommunication. When people have more time, they can talk freely to solve such issues and eventually create a happy society.Robots can be used on certain jobs to avoid accidents caused by careless behavior of some people. When robots are used on such work, it does not risk any human life due to accidents at the workplace. Human resources can be efficiently used by performing tasks which demand human skills like critical thinking and problem solving. Robots can be used on low-end jobs like moving heavy things and heavy weight lifting. While some people talk about how robots can be useful to humans, others voice their concerns about reduction in human value and the creation of a lazy society due to heavy dependency on robots. When robots become cheaper to produce, employers may prefer to use more robots than humans. As the technology constantly improves the abilities of robots, it could weaken the value of humans. Many people may rely on robots heavily. Some may even develop the habit of using robots on tasks that they can easily do. This could create a lazy society. As an aging society, Japan sees it as a must to build robots that take care of elderly people at their homes, because without them, the nation's health care system can't cope. There will simply be too many elderly people to care for as the nation faces a decreasing birth rate, an aging population, and the loosening of family ties. However, many of Japan's elderly people would prefer human helpers rather than robots. Above all, Japan wants, if not “needs”, its dreams of robots in the home to come true because its immigration (移民) policy is anti-immigration.In conclusion, robots can be used on anything that can eventually improve humans' living standards but we can't depend on them too much. Robots can be used to help humans live in harmony and form a happy society.

In the first study of its kind, a team of international researchers looked at the damage caused by one of the pollutants that have the most severe impact on health: PM2.5.Particulate matter, or PM, is a type of air pollutant consisting of small particles of different sizes. PM2.5 has a diameter of fewer than 2.5 micrometers, about 30 times smaller than a human hair. These particles are so smallthat they can go into our respiratory system(呼吸系统), resulting in lung and systemic inflammation(炎症) and stress. The team found that something as simple as a daily vitamin B supplement could potentially reduce the impact of the tiny particles on the human body, although they stressed that the research was in its early stages and the sample size was small. For this study, 10 volunteers were initially exposed to clean air and given a placebo(安慰剂) to check their responses. The group then took another placebo for four weeks before being exposed to heavily polluted air from downtown Toronto, where an estimated 1,000 cars pass every hour. The bad air was delivered to the volunteers through an “oxygentype” face mask. The experiment was then repeated, with each volunteer taking a B vitamin supplement daily made up of 2.5 mg of folic acid, 50 mg of vitamin B6, and 1 mg of vitamin B12. B6 can be found in liver, chicken and nuts, and B12 in fish, meat, eggs, milk and some cereals. The researchers found that four weeks of B vitamin supplements reduced the damage of PM2.5 exposure by 28%-76%. The results highlight how prevention at an individual level could be used to fight the harmful effects of PM2.5.【解题导语】本文是一篇说明文. 1.Why is PM2.5 harmful to our health?A.It pollutes and poisons the air.B.It is too much to be got rid of.C.It carries viruses and diseases.D.It is easily breathed in and damages our body.D 根据第二段中的“These particles are so small...inflammation(炎症)and stress.” 2.What can we infer from Paragraph 3?A.The process of the research was not scientific.B.This kind of research has been done many times. 阅读理解A(2019·郑州第一次质量预测)A day in the life of 18-year-old David Lanster is full of typical teenage stuff: school, baseball practice and homework. And then he starts cooking. “Some nights I'm up until 1:00 a.m. making pies, or even later if we're cooking beef,” said the student at Ransom Everglades High School in Florida, US.For the past year, Lanster and Kelly Moran, his classmate, have been hosting fancy dinner parties at Lanster's parents' home. Their meals have 17 courses and are all made by themselves. Their guests used to give them gifts to thank them until the pair decided to do something nice for charity(慈善事业). “We got some really great Miami Heat tickets, a nice watch, and many kitchen gadgets(小器具),” Lanster said. “But we wanted to make this something positive for people other than us.”Lauster and Moran focus on Common Threads, a charity that aims to teach kids in poor communities to cook and make healthy eating choices. The young cooks ask their guests to give however much they want as payment for their meals. It all goes to Common Threads because Lanster's parents cover their food costs. After their last 12-person event, Lanster and Moran gave $1,600 to the charity. Now, they're taking their show out of the kitchen and on the road. They have started to organize private dinner parties with a similar model: the host pays for the ingredients, and the guests make a donation to a charity of their choice.Without formal training, Lanster said he had been interested in cooking since he helped his mom in the kitchen when he was very young. He learned how to cook by reading cookbooks and watching TV programs. Outside the kitchen, the two are busy preparing their college applications. Neither of them is sure what they will do in the future, but they've promised their parents that they will leave professional cooking alone until they finish school.【语篇解读】本文主要介绍了Lanster和Kelly Moran组织慈善捐赠的事迹。

Unit 2 RobotsⅠ.阅读理解A(2020·河北省高三年级名校联考) In elementary school,Glenn Cameron was very aware of the challenges faced by his friend,Roger, who had lost a hand. Now he has built an artificial helper for him.The robotic hand is called “Dexi”.Each of its fingers can move independently. The strength and speed of the hand's“muscles” can be controlled. He's also created a digital version of this hand, which responds on a computer screen.Through a special headset, the system takes electrical signals from a human brain, sends them to a computer, and then the computer “ tells” the hand what to do.For example,to make the hand close, you “see” a fist in your head.In fact,Cameron's first robotic hand was 3D printed online.Realizing the hand was too limited,he decided to build his own.It was quite a challenge, but his new version was better. It was also cheap, compared to many other robotic hand projects.Cameron says designing and building the hand was hard, but he went on.Then came the one Roger is using.Cameron is working on a hand that can actually be used by a person who's lost a hand at present. He says the new hand will be simpler, because there won't be as much space. To make up for this,he's adding a mini camera and trying to make the hand smarter.Cameron encourages young people who think they might want to do something demanding and similar,“ You just begin working towards it.Take one little step at a time, purposeful and steadfast, sooner or later you're going to get to the place you long for.”

ATraditionally, robots have been hard, made of metal and other rigid material. But a team of scientists at Harvard University in the US has managed to build an entirely soft robot—one that draws inspiration from an octopus(章鱼).Described in science journal Nature, the “Octobot” could pave the way for more effective autonomous robots that could be used in search, rescue and exploration. “The Octobot is a minimal system which may serve as a foundation for a new generation of completely soft, autonomous robots,” the study's authors wrote.Robots built for precise, repetitive movements in a controlled environment don't do so well on rough terrains(地形) or in unpredictable conditions. And they aren't especially safe around humans, because they're made out of hard and heavy parts that could be potentially dangerous to their users. So researchers have been working on building soft robots for decades. They've taken inspiration from nature, looking to animals from jellyfish to cockroaches, which are often made up of more flexible matter. But creating a completely soft robot remains a challenge. Even if engineers build a silicone(硅酮) body, it's still a grand challenge to construct flexible versions of essential parts, such as a source of power.“Although soft robotics is still in its early stage, it holds great promise for several applications, such as searchandrescue operations and exploration,” Barbara Mazzolai and Virgilio Mattoli of the Italian Institute of Technology's Center for MicroBioRobotics, wrote in a comment. “Soft robots might also open up new approaches to improving wellness and quality of life.”
