1. Treasure Starfish 珍贵的海星Once upon a time there was a wise man who used to go to the ocean to do his writing. He had a habit of walking on the beach before he began his work. One day he was walking along the shore. As he looked down the beach, he saw a human figure moving like a dancer. He smiled to himself to think of someone who would dance to the day. So he began to walk faster to catch up.As he got closer, he saw that it was a young man and the young man wasn‟t dancing, but instead he was reaching down to the shore, picking up something and very gently throwing it into the ocean. As he got closer he called out, “Good morning! What are you doing?”The young man paused, looked up and replied, “Throwing starfish in the ocean.”“I guess I should have asked, why are you throwing starfish in the ocean?”“The sun is up, and the tide is going out. And if I don‟t throw them in they‟ll die.”“But, young man, don‟t you realize that there are miles and miles of beach, and starfish all along it? You can‟t possibly make a difference!”The young man listened politely, then bent down, picked another starfish and threw it into the sea, past the breaking waves and said, “It made a difference for that one.”There is something very special in each and every one of us. We have all been gifted with the ability to make a difference. And if we can become aware of that gift, we gain through the strength of our visions the power to shape the future. We must each find our starfish. And if we throw our stars wisely and well, the world will be blessed.2. Busy繁忙Once upon a time a very strong woodcutter asked for a job in a timber merchant, and he got it. The pay was really good and so were the work conditions. For that reason, the woodcutter was determined to do his best. His boss gave him an axe and showed him the area where he was supposed to work. The first day, the woodcutter brought 18 trees.“Congratulations,” the boss said. “Go on that way!”Very motivated by the boss‟s words, the woodcutter tried harder the next day, but he could only bring 15 trees. The third day he tried even harder, but he could only bring 10 trees. Day after day he was bringing less and less trees.“I must be losing my strength”, the woodcutter thought. He went to the boss and apologized, saying that he could not understand what was going on.“When was the last time you sharpened your axe?” the boss asked.“Sharpen? I had no time to sharpen my axe. I have been very busy trying to cut trees.”3. Follow Your Dream 追随梦想There was a young man born in a poor family. As a result, his school career was continually interrupted. Once he was asked to write a paper about what he wanted to be and do when he grew up.That night he wrote a seven-page paper describing his goal of someday owning a horse ranch. He wrote about his dream in great detail and he even drew a diagram of a 200-acre ranch. Then he drew a detailed floor plan for a 4,000-square-foot house that would sit on a 200-acre dream ranch. He put a great deal of his heart into the project and the next day he handed it in to his teacher. Two days later he received his paper back. On the front page was a large red F with a note that read, “See me after class.”The boy with the dream went to see the teacher after class and asked, “Why did I receive an F?”The teacher said, “This is an unrealistic dream for a young boy like you. You have no money. You have no resources from your family. There‟s no way you could ever do it. ” Then the teacher added, “If you will rewrite this paper with a more realistic goal, I will reconsider your grade.”The boy went home and thought about it long and hard. He asked his father what he should do. His father said, “Look, son, you have to make up your own mind on this. However, I think it is a very important decision for you.”Finally, after sitting with it for a week, the boy turned in the same paper, making no changes at all. He stated, “You can keep the F and I‟ll keep my dream.”Recollecting the story, my friend Monty and I are now sitting in his, 4,000-square-foot house in the middle of a 200-acre horse ranch. Two summers ago that same schoolteacher brought 30 kids to camp out on his ranch. When the teacher was leaving, he said, “Look, Monty, I can tell you this now. When I was your teacher, I was something of a dream stealer. During those years I stole a lot of kids‟ dreams. Fortunately you had enough gumption not to give up on yours." Don‟t let anyone steal your dreams. Follow your heart, no matter what.4. Ask, Ask, Ask 敢于要求Markita Andrews, the greatest saleswoman in the world today, has generated more than eighty thousand dollars selling Girl Scout cookies since she was seven years old.At age 13, Markita discovered the secret of selling. It starts with desire—burning, white-hot desire. For Markita and her mother, their dream was to travel the globe. So at age 13 when Markita read in her Girl Scout magazine that the Scout who sold the most cookies would win an all- expenses-paid trip for two around the world, she decided to sell all the Girl Scout cookies she could. But desire alone is not enough. To make her dream come true, Markita knew she needed a plan."Always wear your professional garb," her aunt advised. "Wear your Girl Scout uniform. Always smile, whether the y buy or not, always be nice. And don‟t ask them to buy your cookies; ask them to invest."Markita went off in her uniform each day after school, ready to ask—and keep asking—folks to invest in her dream. "Hi, I have a dream. I‟m earning a trip around the world for me and my mom by merchandising Girl Scout cookies," she‟d say at the door. "Would you like to invest in one dozen or two dozen boxes of cookies?"That year Markita won her trip around the world. Markita is no smarter and no more extroverted than other people with dreams of their own. The difference is Markita had discovered the secret of selling: Ask, Ask, Ask! Many people fail before they even begin because they fail to ask for what they want. The fear of rejection leads many of us to reject ourselves and our dreams long before anyone else ever has the chance—no matter what we‟re selling. And everyone is selling something. "You‟re selling yourself everyday—in school, to your boss, to new people you meet," said Markita at 14, "My mother is a waitress: she sells the daily special. Mayors and presidents trying to get votes are selling… I see selling everywhere I look. Selling is part of the whole world."It takes courage to ask for what you want. Courage is not the absence of fear. It‟s doing what it takes despite one‟s fear. And, as Markita has discovered, the more you ask, the easier it gets.5. The Rose Within 带刺的玫瑰A certain man planted a rose and watered it faithfully and before it blossomed, he examined it.He saw the bud that would soon blossom, but noticed thorns upon the stem and he thought, "How can any beautiful flower come from a plan t burdened with so many sharp thorns?” Saddened by this thought, he neglected to water the rose, and just before it was ready to bloom… it died.So it is with many people. Within every soul there is a rose. The God-like qualities planted in us at birth, grow amid the thorns of our faults. Many of us look at ourselves and see only the thorns, the defects. We despair, thinking that nothing good can possibly come from us. We neglect to water the good within us, and eventually it dies. We never realize our potential. Some people do not see the rose within themselves; someone else must show it to them. One of the greatest gifts a person can possess is to be able to reach past the thorns of another, and find the rose within them. This is the characteristic of love: to look at a person and, knowing his faults, recognize the nobility in his soul, and help him realize that he can overcome his faults. If we show him the "rose" within himself, he will conquer the thorns. Only then will he blossom many times over.6. The Farmer’s Donkey井中之驴One day a farmer‟s donkey fell into an abandoned well. The animal cried piteously for hours as the farmer tried to figure out what to do. Finally, he decided the animal was too old and the well needed to be covered up anyway; so it just wasn‟t worth it for him to try to retrieve the donkey. He invited all his neighbors to come over and help him. They each grabbed a shovel and began to shovel dirt into the well. Realizing what was happening, the donkey at first cried and wailed horribly. Then, a few shovel-fulls later, he quieted down completely. The farmer peered down into the well, and was astounded by what he saw. With every shovel-full of dirt that hit his back, the donkey would shake it off and take a step up on the new layer of dirt.As the farmer‟s neighbors continued to shovel dirt on top of the animal, he would shake it off and take a step up. Pretty soon, the donkey stepped up over the edge of the well and trotted off, to the shock and astonishment of everyone.Life is going to shovel dirt on you, all kinds of dirt. The trick to getting out of the well is to stop wailing, and not let the dirt bury you, but to shake it off and take a step up. Each one of our troubles is a stepping-stone. We can get out of the deepest wells just by not stopping, never giving up! Shake it off and take a step up.7. Up to You 快乐还是痛苦,有你来定Jerry was the kind of guy who was always in a good mood and always had something positive to say.One day I went up to Jerry and asked him, "I don‟t get it! You can‟t be a positive person all of the time. How do you do it?"Jerry replied, "Each morning I wake up and say to myself, …Jerry, you have two choices today. You can choose to be in a good mood or you can choose to be in a bad mood.‟ I choose to be in a good mood. ""Yeah, right, it‟s not that easy," I protested."Yes it is," Jerry said. "Life is all about choices. You choose how you react to situations. You choose how people will affect your mood. You choose to be in a good mood or bad mood. It‟s your choice how you live life."I reflected on what Jerry said. Soon thereafter, I changed my job. We lost touch. Several years later, I heard that Jerry was robbed and was shot. I saw Jerry about six months after the accident. When I asked him how he was, he replied, "I feel really good.”I asked him what had gone through his mind when he was taken to the hospital.Jerry replied, “The first thing came to my mind was that I should have closed the back door. Then I remembered that I had two choices: I could choose to live, or I could choose to die. I chose to live. ”Jerry continued, "The nurses kept telling me I was going to be fine. But when they wheeledme into the emergency room and the expressions on the faces of the doctors and nurses scared me. In their eyes, I read, …He‟s a dead man. …I knew I needed to take action.""What did you do?" I asked."Well, a nurse asked if I was allergic to anything," said Jerry, "…Yes,‟ I replied. The doctors and nurses were waiting for my reply. I took a deep breath a nd yelled, …Bullets!‟ Over their laughter, I told them, …I am choosing to live. Operate on me as if I am alive, not dead."Jerry lived thanks to the skill of his doctors, but also because of his amazing attitude. I learned from him that every day we have the choice to live positively.8. Tiny Steps, Big Changes寻求大改变,从小处做起If you have failed in the past at trying to make big changes in your life, try again now, one tiny step at a time.Every year it‟s the same. As December comes to an end, you think about the new year and all the ways you want to improve your life. But as you start to write down your hopes for the new year, you think about last year. You excitedly wrote down all the changes you were going to make, but by the end of January those ideas got lost in your crowded life. Here‟s a suggestion: Forget the overreaching, hard-to-achieve goals. Just think small. "We have this extreme-makeover culture that thinks you‟ve got to do everything in big steps, even though the evidence is overwhelming that it doesn‟t work," says psychologist R obert Maurer, who recently published One Small Step Can Change Your Life. "What we try to do is to break down to a step so small that people couldn‟t possibly resist or have any excuse not to do it."The technique is called kaizen, a Japanese word for an American business philosophy adapted to change behavior and attitudes. During World War II, American factory managers increased productivity by trying small, continuous improvements rather than sudden radical change. After the war, U.S. occupation forces brought that philosophy to a rebuilding Japan, which made it a cornerstone of the country‟s amazing economic rebound. The Japanese called it kaizen, which means "improvement".Maurer, who teaches at the UCLA and University of Washington medical schools, says he began studying whether the idea could help people who couldn‟t tackle big challenges. "Some of it is psychological, and some of it is just their overwhelmed lifestyles," he says. "They don‟t have the time to go to the gym and do all those other things we know are good for us. So kaizen seemed a logical thing to experiment with."9. You’ll Get Exactly What You Expect 心想才能事成I remember a young lady who went to work for a company immediately after graduating from college. She seemed extremely talented but unbelievably timid. She was assigned to a division-level marketing department where she assisted in the production of advertising. Her supervisor associated her shyness with a lack of technical and conceptual skills. As a result, she was never included in brainstorming or planning sessions. The supervisor thought she was best suited to simple graphics layout and paste-up.Frustrated that her talents were squandered on simple tasks, she applied to the corporate marketing department. The vice-president reviewed her resume and transferred her without interviewing her at length. His concept of the young lady was positive and assigned her to a series of important, key projects. She performed magnificently.A few months later, the original supervisor was in the vice-president‟s office admiring the new corporate ad campaign. The supervisor asked, "What kind of a rain-maker worked this kind of magic?" The VP replied, "This was all completed by that young lady you sent me. That was the best move I ever made!"This is but one example of the dozens of cases I can document where individuals were literally hobbled by low or incorrect expectations. In many instances, the mind set of a co-worker or supervisor can restrict an employee‟s ability to become an excellent pe rformer. This cause-and-effect model applies to all aspects of our lives. The neighbor‟s young son asked if he could mow my yard. I told him I would talk to his dad first. The father said, "I don‟t think he can handle a mower. I never let him near mine. Go ahead if you like." I assured him I would watch his son closely and be certain he could handle the equipment safely. The boy not only knew how to handle the mower, but did such a good job, I asked him to help each week. His dad was amazed. "I never would have guessed," he said. "You should have given him a chance," I suggested.10. Keep Your Fork紧握餐叉There was a woman who had been diagnosed with a terminal illness and was given three months to live. As she began getting her things …in order‟, she asked for her pastor to come to her house to discuss certain aspects of her final wishes. She told him which songs she wanted sung at the service and what dress she wanted to be buried in.Everything was in order and as the pastor was preparing to leave, the woman suddenly remembered one final request, "Please Pastor, just one more thing," she said excitedly. "This is very important to me," the woman continued. "I want to be buried holding a fork in my right hand." The pastor gazed at the woman, at a loss for words."That surprises you, doesn‟t it?" the woman asked. The pastor replied: "Well to be quite honest, I am puzzled by the request".The woman explained, "You see, Pastor, in all my years of attending church socials, I remember that when the dishes were being cleared after the main course, someone would inevitably lean over to me and say, …Keep your fork‟ … it was my favorite part of the meal because I knew that something better was coming. Something wonderful to end the meal!"The pastor listened intently and a smile came upon his face. The woman continued, "So, I just want people to see me there with a fork in my hand and I want them to wonder… …What‟s with the fork‟… then I want you to tell them …Keep your Fork … the best is yet to come.‟"She knew and trusted that the best was yet to come. At the funeral, every one that walked by the woman‟s coffin saw her wearing a beautiful dress with her favorite Bible held in her left hand and a fork held in her right hand.Over and over the pastor heard people ask the question, "Why is she holding a fork?" and his smile began to get larger and brighter each time. During his message, the pastor explained the fork and what it symbolized to her.So the next time you reach for your fork, let it remind you, oh so gently, that the best is yet to come …11.Bend, but Don’t break弯而不折One of my fondest memories as a child is going by the river and sitting idly on the bank. There I would enjoy the peace and quiet, watch the water rush downstream and listen to the chirps of birds and the rustling of leaves in the trees. I would also watch the bamboo trees bend under pressure from the wind and watch them return gracefully to their upright after the wind had died down. When I think about the bamboo tree's ability to bounce back, the word "resilience" comes to mind. When used in reference to a person this word means the ability to readily recover from shock, depression or any other negative situation that stretches the limits of a person's emotions.Have you ever felt like you are about to snap? Have you ever felt like you are at your breaking point? Thankfully, you have survived the experience to live to talk about it.During the experience you probably felt a mix of emotions that threatened your health. You felt emotionally drained, mentally exhausted and you most likely endured unpleasant physical symptoms.Life is a mixture of good times and bad times, happy moments and unhappy moments. The next time you are experiencing one of those bad times or unhappy moments that take you close to your breaking point, bend, but don't break. Try your best not to let the situation get the best of you.A measure of hope will take you through the unpleasant moments. With hope for a better tomorrow or a better situation, things may not be as bad as they seem to be.12. Eagle in a Storm风雨中的雄鹰Did you know that an eagle knows when a storm is approaching long before it breaks? The eagle will fly to some high spot and wait for the winds to come. When the storm hits, itsets its wings so that the wind will pick it up and lift it above the storm. While the storm rages below, the eagle is soaring above it.The eagle does not escape the storm. It simply uses the storm to lift it higher. It rises on the winds that bring the storm. When the storms of life come upon us—and all of us will experience them—we can rise above them by setting our belief that we can make it. The storms do not have to overcome us. We can allow our inner power to lift us above them.We can enable ourselves to ride the winds of the storm that bring sickness, tragedy, failure and disappointment in our lives. We can soar above the storm.Remember, it is not the burdens of life that weigh us down, it is how we handle them. 13. Keep the Trolls Away from your Goals 别让小人挡了你的道There is a type of crab that cannot be caught—it is agile and clever enough to get out of any crab trap. And yet, these crabs are caught by the thousands every day, thanks to a particular human trait they possess. The trap is a wire cage with a hole at the top. Bait is placed in the cage, and the cage is lowered into the water. One crab comes along, enters the cage, and begins munching on the bait. A second crab joins him. A third. Crab Thanksgiving. Eventually, however, all the bait is gone. The crabs could easily climb up the side of the cage and through the hole, but they do not. They stay in the cage. Other crabs come along and join them—long after the bait is gone. And more.Should one of the crabs realize there is no further reason to stay in the trap and attempts to leave, the other crabs will gang up on him and stop him. They will repeatedly pull him off the side of the cage. If he is persistent, the others will tear off his claws to keep him from climbing. If he persists still, they will kill him.The crabs—by force of the majority—stay together in the cage. The cage is hauled up, and it‟s dinnertime on the pier. The chief difference between these crabs and humans is that these crabs live in water and humans on land.Anyone who has a dream—one that might get them out of what they perceive to be a trap—had best beware of the fellow-inhabitants of the trap. The human crabs (we call them trolls) do not usually use physical force—although they are certainly not above it. They generally don‟t need it, however. They have more effective methods at hand, and in mouth—doubt, ridicule, sarcasm, humiliation, and dozen others not listed in our dictionary. The point is to manage to keep the trolls away from your goals.14. Sure You Can相信自己Remember when you were a little child trying to learn to walk?First you had to learn to stand: a process involving constantly falling down, then getting back up. You laughed sometimes and cried at other times. Somehow there was a determination and conviction that you would succeed, no matter what. After much practice you finally figure out how to balance yourself, a necessary requirement. You enjoyed this new feeling of power—you‟d stand everywhere you could—in your crib, by the couch. It was a joyous time——you did it! You were in control of you. Now—the next step—walking. You‟d seen others do it—it didn‟t look that hard—just move your legs while you were standing. Wrong—more complexity than you ever imagined. More frustration than anyone should have to deal with. But you tried, again and again and again until you figured this out.If people caught you walking, they applauded, they laughed, it was, "Oh my God, look at what he‟s/she‟s doing". This encouragement fueled you on; it raised your self-confidence. But how many times did you attempt when no one was w atching, when no one was cheering? You couldn‟t wait for someone to encourage you to take the next steps. You learned how to encourage yourself. If we could only remember this about ourselves in today‟s day.Remember that we can do anything we set our minds to if we are willing to go through the process, just like when we learned to walk. We don‟t need to wait for others to encourage us; we need to encourage ourselves. If you‟ve forgotten how to do this, or feel like your self-esteem needs a boost, take a short journey back through your life—look at your accomplishments, no matter if they were large or small—you met the challenge and figured out a way to succeed. While going back, look for the little child you once were. Thank them for never giving up. As you wave goodbye, remember they will never give up on you. They have believed in you all of your life! Now you need to believe in you too!Remember, today is the best day of your life because yesterday was and tomorrow may only be.15. Never Too Late to Become What You Want to Be 梦想终有成真时The first day of school our professor introduced a little old lady to us.“Why are you in college at such a young age?" I asked later. She jokingly replied, “I‟m here to meet a rich husband, get married, have a couple of children, and then retire and travel.""No seriously," I asked. I was curious what may have motivated her to be taking on this challenge at her age. " I always dreamed of having a college education and now I‟m getting one!" she told me.We became instant friends. Every day for the next three months we would leave classtogether and talk nonstop. I was always listening to this “time machine" as she shared her wisdom and experience with me.At the end of the semester we invited Rose to make a speech to o ur football team. I‟ll never forget what she taught us. As she began to deliver her prepared speech, she dropped her note card on the floor. A little embarrassed she simply said, “I‟m sorry. This whiskey is killing me! I‟ll never get my speech back in order so let me just tell you what I know." As we laughed she cleared her throat and began: “We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing. There are only four secrets to staying young, being happy, and achieving success. You h ave to laugh and find humor every day. You‟ve got to have a dream. When you lose your dreams, you die. We have so many people walking around who are dead and don‟t even know it! There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up. If you are nineteen years old and lie in bed for one full year and don‟t do one productive thing, you will turn twenty years old. Anybody can grow older. That doesn't take any talent or ability. The idea is to grow up by always finding the opportunity in change. Have n o regrets. The elderly usually don‟t have regrets for what we did, but rather for things we did not do. The only people who fear death are those with regrets.”At the year‟s end Rose finished the college degree. One week after graduation Rose died peacefully in her sleep. Over two thousand college students attended her funeral to honor the wonderful woman who taught by example that it‟s never too late to be all you can possibly be.16. Making Sandcastles堆沙堡A little boy is on his knees scooping and packing the sand with plastic shovels into a bright blue bucket. Then he upends the bucket on the surface and lifts it. And, to the delight of the little architect, a castle tower is created. All afternoon he will work, scooping out the moat and packing the walls. Bottle tops will be sentries. Sticks will be bridges. A sandcastle will be built.Big city. Busy streets. Rumbling traffic.A man is in his office. At his desk he puts papers into stacks and assigns tasks. The phone is on his shoulder and he is knocking the keyboard with his fingers. Contracts are signed and much to the delight of the man, a profit is made. All his life he will work, formulating the plans, forecasting the future. Profits will be sentries. Capital gains will be bridges. An empire will be built. Two builders of two castles. They have much in common. They shape little pebbles into grand buildings. They are diligent and determined. And for both the tide will rise and the end will come.Yet that is where the similarities stop. For the boy sees the end while the man ignores it.Watch the boy as the dusk approaches. As the waves near, the wise child jumps to his feet and begins to clap. There is no sorrow. No fear. No regret. He knew this would happen. He is not surprised. And when the great breaker crashes into his castle and his masterpiece is sucked into the sea, he smiles. He smiles, picks up his tools, takes his father‟s hand, and goes home. The grownup, however, is not so wise. As the wave of years collapses on his castle he is terrified. He tries to protect the sandy monument. He blocks the waves from the walls he has made. Salt-water soaked and shivering he snarls at the incoming tide.。

While trying to open the safe, his hand, shaking from nervousness, slipped off the combination. The robbers panicked and shot him. Luckily, Jerry was found relatively quickly and rushed to the local hospital. After 18 hours of surgery and weeks of intensive care, Jerry was released from the hospital with fragments of the bullets still in his body.I bumped into Jerry about six months after the terrifying accident. When I asked him how he was, he replied, “If I were any better, I’d be twins. Want to see my scars?” I declined to see his wounds, but did ask him what had gone through his mind as the robbery took place. “The first thing that went through my mind was that I should have locked the back door,” Jerry replied. “Then, as I lay on the floor, I remembered that I had two choices: I could choose to live, or I could choose to die. I chose to live.” “Weren’t you scared?” I asked.Jerry continued, “The paramedics were great. They kept telling me I was going to be fine. But when they wheeled me into the emergency room and I saw the expressions on the faces of the doctors and nurses, I got really scared. In theireyes, I read, ‘He’s a dead man.’ I knew I needed to take action.” “What did you do?” I asked. “Wel l, there was a big nurse shouting questions at me,” said Jerry. “She asked if I was allergic to anything. ‘Yes’ I replied. The doctors and nurses stopped working as they waited for my reply. I took a deep breath and yelled, ‘Bullets’. Over their laughter I told them, ‘I am choosing to live. Operate on me as if I am alive, not dead.’ ”Jerry lived thanks to the skill of his experienced doctors, but also because of his amazing attitude. I learned from him that every day we have the choice to live fully.1. Attitude is everything 态度决定一切

Attitude is everythingJerry was the kind of guy you love to hate. He was always in a good mood and always had something positive to say. When someone would ask him how he was doing, he would reply, "If I were any better, I would be twins!"He was a unique manager because he had several waiters who had followed him around from restaurant to restaurant. The reason the waiters followed Jerry was because of his attitude. He was a natural motivator. If an employee was having a bad day, Jerry was there telling the employee how to look on the positive side of the situation.Seeing this style really made me curious, so one day I went up to Jerry and asked him, "I don"t get it! You can"t be a positive person all of the time. How do you do it?"Jerry replied, "Each morning I wake up and say to myself, "Jerry, you have two choices today. You can choose to be in a good mood or you can choose to be in a bad mood." I choose to be in a good mood. Each time something bad happens, I can choose to be a victim or I can choose to learn from it. I choose to learn from it. Every time someone comes to me complaining, I can choose to accept their complaining or I can point out the positive side of life. I choose the positive side of life.""Yeah, right, it"s not that easy," I protested."Yes, it is," Jerry said. "Life is all about choices. When you cut away all the junk, every situation is a choice. You choose how you react to situations. You choose how people will affect your mood. You choose to be in a good mood or bad mood. The bottom line: It"s your choice how you live life."I reflected on what Jerry said. Soon thereafter, I left the restaurant industry to start my own business. We lost touch, but I often thought about him when I made a choice about life instead of reacting to it.Several years later, I heard that Jerry did something you are never supposed to do in a restaurant business: he left the back door open one morning and was held up at gunpoint by three armed robbers. While trying to open the safe(保险柜), his hand, shaking from nervousness, slipped off (忘记,遗漏)the combination (开启号码锁的号码组合)。

"I'm really, really excited to be going across the line at last. It doesn't feel like long since 1 crossed it first."Mike set off on his round-the-world trip on November 18, 2008. He has been sailing his yacht (帆船), , single-handedly, though a support team has been sailing next to him along the way.The teen has now achieved the title of Youngest Sailor to Circumnavigate the Globe Solo, according to the Guinness World Records. Mike learned how to sail when he was seven years old from his father, Peter and at age 14, he railed across the Atlantic alone. The teenager's school -- which Mike describes as "highly supportive" of his trip -- has redesigned his coursework to fit in with his trip. It also gave him some coursework to do during "quiet moments", according to Mike's website. There haven't been many of those quiet moments. Repeated autopilot failures forced him to stop for repairs in Portugal, the Canary Islands, South Africa, and twice in Australia, according to his website.Bad weather in the Southern Ocean -- between Australia and Antarctica –forced Mike to battle 50ft waves and 57 mph winds. He said at one point, a "freak (反常的,怪异的)wave" picked up the boat and turned it on its side.'"My feet were on the ceiling at the time," he told CNN. "That was a really hairy moment, and I was certainly thinking, 'Why am I here?' But we took the sails off and the day after I thought, 'This is brilliant!'"Mike describes his father as his biggest hero, always supportive of what he wanted to achieve. Thirteen months ago, in a Florida library he took a book off the shelf with the previous owner's name, Miss Hollis Maynell, and took great interest in the notes in the margin. The soft handwriting reflected a thoughtful soul and insightful mind. With time and effort he located her address. He wrote her a letter introducing himself and inviting her to correspond.During the following days the two grew to know each other through the mail. John requested a photograph, but she refused. She felt that if he really eared, it wouldn't matter what she looked like. Later they scheduled their first meeting--7:00 p.m. at Grand Central Station in New York."You'll recognize me," she wrote, "by the red rose I’ll be wearing on my lapel (翻领)." So at 7:00 he was in the station looking for the girl with the red rose.A young woman in a green suit was coming toward him. Her figure was long and slim and her eyes were blue. Almost uncontrollably he made one step closer to her, and just at this moment he saw Hollis Maynell -- a woman well past 40. The girl was walking quickly away. He felt as though he split in two, so keen was his desire to follow her, and yetso deep was his longing for the woman whose spirit had truly accompanied him and upheld his own.He did not hesitate. He squared his shoulders and said, "I'm John, and you must be Miss Maynell. I am so glad you could meet me; may I take you to dinner?"The woman smiled, "I don't know what this is about, son," she answered, "but the young lady in the green suit begged me to wear this rose on my coat. And she said if you were to ask me to dinner, I should tell you that she is waiting for you in the restaurant across the street. She said it was some kind of test!"61. The writer tries to tell us thatA. it is useful to read often in the libraryB. Miss Maynell was brighter than JohnC. only the true love can stand the testD. you must make friends with an honest manCUntil recently, the "science of the future" was supposed to be electronics and artificial intelligence. Today it seems more and more likely that the next great breakthroughs in technology will be brought through a combination of those two sciences with organic chemistry and genetic engineering. This combination is the science of biotechnology. Organic chemistry enables us to produce marvelous syntheticmaterials. However, it is still difficult to manufacture anything that has the capacity of wool to conserve (保存) heat and also to absorb moisture. Nothing that we have been able to produce so far comes anywhere near the combination of strength, lightness and flexibility that we find in the bodies of ordinary insects.Nevertheless, scientists in the laboratory have already succeeded in "growing" a material that has many of the characteristics of human skin. The next step may well be "biotech hearts and eyes" which can replace diseased organs in human beings. These will not be rejected by the body, as is the case with organs from humans. The application of biotechnology to energy production seems even more promising. In 1996 the famous science fiction writer, Arthur C. Clarke, many of whose previous predictions have come true, said that we may soon be able to develop remarkably cheap and renewable sources of energy. Some of these power sources will be biological. Clarke and others have warned us repeatedly that sooner or later we will have to give up our dependence on non-renewable power sources. Coal, oil and gas are indeed convenient. However, using them also means creating dangerously high levels of pollution. It will be impossible to meet the growing demand for energy without increasing that pollution to catastrophic (灾难性的) levels unless we develop power sources that are both cheaper and cleaner. It is attempting to think that biotechnology or some other "science of the future" can solve our problems. Before we surrender to that temptation we should remember nuclear power. Only a few generations ago it seemed to promise limitless, cheap and safe energy. Today those promises lie buried in a concrete grave in a place called Chernobyl, in the Ukraine. Biotechnology is unlikely, however, to break its promises in quite the same or such a dangerous way.66. According to the passage, the science of the future is likely to be ________.A. biotechnologyB. electronicsC. genetic engineeringD. nuclear technology67. The materials produced with organic chemistry are ________.at present.A. as good as woolB. as good as an insect's bodyC. better than natural materialsD. not as good as natural materials68. According to the passage, it may soon be possible ________.A. to transplant human organsB. to make artificial hearts and eyesC. to produce drugs without side effectsD. to make something as good as human skin69. In 1996, Arthur C. Clarke predicted thatA. the Chernobyl disaster would happen in two yearsB. biological power sources would be put into use soonC. oil, gas and coal could be repeatedly used in the futureD. we will never stop using non-renewable power sources70. What do we learn from the last paragraph?A. Biological power will keep all its promises.B. Biological power is cheaper than nuclear power.C. Biotechnology can solve all our future energy problems.D. Biological power may not be as dangerous as nuclear powerPART FOUR WRITING (45 marks)SECTION A (10 marks)Directions: Read the following passage. Complete the diagram by using the information from the passage. Write NO MORE THAN 3 WORDS for each answer.Who says people need land to grow vegetables? All you need is a roof that is strong enough and flat enough to support a garden. We are going to describe one way to build a rooftop garden that does not even require soil. Four things are needed for a small rooftop garden. One thing is a roof that can support the weight; another is grass cutting. The third thing is a sheet of plastic in which to spread the cut grass. And the last thing is a box about eight centimeters deep and made out of four pieces of wood. Once you are sure the roof is good, cut and collect some grass. Then lay down the plastic where the garden box will go. The four-sided box can be as long and as wide as needed. Place the box on top of the sheet of plastic. Then fill it with the cut grass. Next, add water and walk on the cuttings to press them down. After about three weeks, the rooftop garden is ready for planting. Put the seeds directly into the wet grass cuttings. This garden is a good place to grow peas, tomatoes, beans, onions and lettuce. If the box is deep enough, potatoes and carrots will also grow.It is important to keep the grass wet until the plants begin to grow. When the plants are growing, they will need watering every day, unless there is rain. And they will need some liquid fertilizer. Also, seeds and new plants must be protected from insects and birds.Rooftop gardens are increasingly popular, and not just to grow vegetables. They keep buildings cooler in the sun, so they save energy. They can also extend the useful life of a roof. Rooftop gardens also reduce the runoff of storm water and help clean the air. Plus they add beauty, and give birds and insects in the city a nice place to live. The building of a rooftop vegetable gardenSECTION B (10 marks)Directions: Read the following passage. Answer the questions according to the information given in the passage. The history of bowling can be traced back to the Stone Age. The first evidence of the game was discovered by the Briton Sir Flinders Petrie and his team of archaeologists in Egypt in the 1930s. He found a collection of objects in a small child's grave that appeared to belong to the original form of the game. However, some have argued that the game evolved much later than that. William Pehle, a German historian, claimed that it started in Germany around 300 AD, having its origin as a religious ceremony. In England, bowling began as early as the 1100s. Throughout England, several kinds of bowling existed during the mid 1300s, but the first written mention of the game was made by King Edward III in 1366. He banned playing it among his troops, because it was distracting(使分心) them from training. Later, during the times of King Henry VIII, the game's popularity increased, and it became a symbol of nobility and high social status.Bowling has been popular in America since Colonial days. During the 17th century, English, Dutch and German settlers imported their own version of the game to America. At that time, it consisted of nine pins(保龄球的木瓶), and was regularly played in an area of New York City still known as Bowling Green. The American Bowling Congress was formed on September 9, 1895, and made contributions towards standardizing bowling in the United States and organizing the first official competition. The Women's Bowling League followed in 1917.Over the years, the game has changed a lot. A variety of tactics(策略;招数) have been developed. The invention of automatic pin spotter (保龄球自动服务机) in the 1940s changed both the game and the industry. Currently, the sport is enjoyed by 95 million people in more than ninety countries worldwide.81. But recent research argues that reading may be just as important in ____96____ . When practiced over a lifetime, reading and language acquisition (习得) skills can support healthy brain functioning in big ways. Simply put: ____97____ power increases brain power. To ____98____ why and what each of us can do to get the most out of our words, start by asking the same question the Yale team did: What is it about reading books in particular that increases our brain power while reading newspapers and m agazines doesn’t? For one, the researchers assume, chapter books encourage “deep reading.” Unlike skimming a page of headlines, reading a book forces your brain to think critically and make ____99____ from one chapter to another, and to the outside world. When you make associations, so does your brain, literally building new pathways between regions in all four lobes (脑叶) and both hemispheres. Over time, these neural networks can promote quicker thinking and may provide a greater ____100____ against the worst effects of cognitive decay (认知衰退) .____101____ , reading books, especially fiction, has been shown to increase empathy (共鸣) and emotional intelligence. One 2013 study found that participants who read just the first part or chapter of a story showed a noticeable increase in empathy one week later, while ____102____ readers showed a decrease. These findings may sound ____103____ , but they’re not; developing social tools such as empathy and emotional intelligence can lead to more (and more positive) human interaction, which ____104____ can lower stress levels—both of which are proved to help you live longer and healthier. That’s not to say that magazines, newspapers, and Web articles are without _____105_____ . Reading anything that fills your mind and exposes you to new words, phrases, and facts seems to carry _____106_____ benefits. New research indicates that a large _____107_____ may lead to a more flexible mind by fueling what scientists call cognitive reserve (认知储备). One way to think about this res erve is as your brain’s ability to adapt to _____108_____ . Just as your blood cells willhelp to cover a cut on your knee, cognitive reserve helps your brain cells find new mental pathways around areas damaged by stroke, dementia, and other forms of decay. This could explain why, after death, many seemingly healthy elders turn out to harbor advanced signs of Alzheimer’s disease in their brains despite showing few signs _____109_____ . It’s their cognitive reserve, researchers suspect, that may allow some seniors to _____110_____ hidden brain damage. 96.A.childhood B.adulthood C.education D.occupation 97.A.Memory B.Fluency C.Literature D.Word98.A.understand B.believe C.question D.confess 99.A.explorations B.connections C.equivalents D.judgments 100.A.appeal B.struggle C.defense D.warning 101.A.Consequently B.However C.Besides D.Instead 102.A.news B.regular C.mind D.occasional 103.A.inevitable B.unofficial C.undeniable D.insignificant104.A.in the meantime B.to date C.in turn D.to the full 105.A.advantages B.weaknesses C.threats D.opportunities 106.A.physical B.mental C.economic D.social107.A.proportion B.brain C.vocabulary D.range108.A.decrease B.change C.increase D.damage109.A.as before B.in total C.as usual D.in life110.A.look down on B.make up for C.get used to D.take out of8.(2022春·四川成都·高一树德中学校考期末)I wanted to be a journalist. Jerry was the kind of guy you love to hate. You choose to be in a good moodor bad mood.

The robbers panicked and shot him.Luckily, Jerry was found relatively quickly and rushed to the local trauma (创伤,外伤)center. After 18 hours of surgery and weeks of intensive care, Jerry was released from the hospital with fragments of the bullets still in his body.I saw Jerry about six months after the accident. When I asked him how he was, he replied, "If I were any better, I"d be twins. Wanna see my scars(伤疤)?" I declined to see his wounds, but did ask him what had gone through his mind as the robbery took place."The first thing that went through my mind was that I should have locked the back door," Jerry replied. "Then, as I lay on the floor, I remembered that I had two choices: I could choose to live, or I could choose to die. I chose to live."

I sat down to read under an old tree in the park. I felt my life was hopeless, for my whole world was dark. A young boy ran up to me, out of breath. He stood right before me with his head down and said excitedly, “Look what I found!” In his hand was a flower, and what a poor sight! The flower was dry and dead. I gave him a small smile and then turned my eyes away so that he could take his dry flower and go off to play. However, he sat next to my side and placed the flower to his nose and said in surprise, “It smells sweet and it’s beautiful, too. That’s why I picked it. Here, it’s for you.” The flower before me was dead. But I knew I must accept it, or he might never leave. So I accepted the flower, and replied, “This is just what I need.” Just then, for the first time I noticed thatthe boy could not see—he was blind. Tears (眼泪) came down my face as I thanked him for picking the best one. “You’re welcome.” he smiled, and then ran off to play. I sat there and wondered how he was able to learn about my pain. Through the eyes of a blind child, at last I could see the problem was not with the world; the problem was me. And for all those years I myself had been blind. I decided to see the beauty in life, and enjoy every second of my life. And then I held that dry flower up to my nose and breathed in the smell of a beautiful rose. The dry flower I sat down to read under an old tree in the park. I felt my life was hopeless, for my whole world was dark. A young boy ran up to me, out of breath.
